The original assault on the Merville Battery was on the night of 5/6 June in an attack by the men of 9 Para, led by Lt Terence Otway. Only partially successful, after the attacking force withdrew the Germans were able to bring two guns back into action. The follow up attack on 7 June also failed and the battery remained under German control until 17 August.
As a young officer in the Royal Engineers I visited the Merville Battery to plan its restoration on 13-15 October 1981 in the company of General Sir Nigel Poett, who commanded the 5th Parachute Brigade and later chaired the Airborne Assault Normandy Trust.

This is late but in case you're still wondering. He said "Dear Peter Young." There was a commando Brigadier called Peter Young so I assume it is he who is being referred to.
