The original assault on the Merville Battery was on the night of 5/6 June in an attack by the men of 9 Para, led by Lt Terence Otway. Only partially successful, after the attacking force withdrew the Germans were able to bring two guns back into action. The follow up attack on 7 June also failed and the battery remained under German control until 17 August. As a young officer in the Royal Engineers I visited the Merville Battery to plan its restoration on 13-15 October 1981 in the company of General Sir Nigel Poett, who commanded the 5th Parachute Brigade and later chaired the Airborne Assault Normandy Trust.
