I always just use xrdp for Remote Desktop on my pi. You just have to type sudo apt-get install xrdp into the command line and restart your pi to install it. Then you just put the IP address into the Windows Remote Desktop program and login to the pi and you are good to go.
ty. I think this is the tru time tested method. The video method slightly outdated being 2 years old. This however worked in less then 5 minutes explained , In one sentence. ty.
Bad Ass! I've been searching for a way to do EXACTLY what you described and presented in this video! Thank you for taking the time to put this video together and place it out on RUclips!!!!
Update: I got it fixed. I typed in IP address and added ":1" after it and now it works. Original: I get an error message it says no such host exist. I followed all the instructions everything else worked.
When running Tightvnc I'm getting an error message. " Error in TightVNC viewer: The requested name is valid, but no data of the requested type was found." I loved the video and the installs went well, I think!!!
If you cant ping your pi, hook it up to a monitor, connect it to the internet. in the bottom corner where the internet connection icon is on the taskbar, hover your mouse > you will see wlan or eth connection and your pi's IP. That is the IP you will use , instead of typing 'raspberrypi'. That is your pi's phone number basically. Unless you move it off your network / then it might change.
thank you for this tutorial. i am new in raspberry, and im now trying to do what you taught in this tutorial. but i wonder how is the hardware connection looks like.
Hi there!!! Really nice video. I'm having some trouble with the windows on the Raspberry, they don´t have "task bar" or "menu bar" (or however it is called). This includes the minimize and close buttons on the right side. I downloaded TightVNC 2.8.79
I have used TightVncViewer for getting into remote sessions at my last job but never configured it. Great video. Can you make a similar video using Kali Linux or even one with Kali Linux on a virtual box?
I have one question like our raspberry pi connected with the same ethernet network which is connected with my laptop or raspberry pi connected with my laptop through an ethernet cable?
I have tried everything and when I put in the remote host in the viewer it says that the name is valid but there is no data of the requested type was found. Have you got any suggestions.
Also tell me one thing, that currently, I am using raspberrypi3b+ so for the first time it's required to display or screen and after that, we can connect remotely. this total new still I am not interface with screen
I've followed the video as instructed very easy to follow and put together well. I can take pictures and video and control my pi from putty but when i try and connect to the server made in tightvncserver I get a Error: In tightvncserver viewer: no such host is known Has anyone ran into this problem and how did they solve it?? I can't seem to find any correct answers from other sources
hi thanks for the well developed tutorial, i hope you can help me as i have come across a problem where each time after i have written the image to my sd card and then after Ive turned the Rpi on i then attempt a ping check to find the ip and always get the error message "request timed out" i hope the is a clear reason why this is im using windows 7 on my home network with the raspbian jesse lite .
Everything worked explained until I tried to connect to my pi via the viewer. I got everything to work by using the IP address of my pi and the play port number e.g. 192.168.x.x::590* where * is the number shown behind the colon when you start tightvnc on the pi. Hope this helps someone.
So I used to have the ip address to my pi and then I installed an image from someone (full of games) and now I cannot see the address or have it show up anywhere. Even the Show IP just has a bunch of unrelated data. So somehow the image makes it impossible to connect?
I open raspi kali linux and type "ip address". I get eth0: 10.0.0.177 and wlan0: 10.43.0.1 I enter either into PuTTY on Win7 and I get connection refused. Why PuTTY refuse connection?
the ping part did not work for my raspberry pi 2, idk if it is the screen os that the screen is made for or what. i even tried to rename the pi and still doesnt work
nvm got it fixed YAY do this if you are stuck... 1:open putty 2:under Host Name {or IP address} put raspberry.local (or what you named your pi 3: port: 22 4:Connection type: SSH 5: then click [Open] 6: then log in as pi, and password is raspberry if u did not change it. Hope this helps =)
I'm getting the same error and I have tried everything. putty fatal error connection refused and I know my address for the pi im doing all the right steps
I'm having an issue... when I try to conect with the tightvnc viewer, it give me an error message: 'Error in tightvnc viewer. This host is not known'. Can you help me?
I forgot the port number... so in the vncviewer I put the Ip adress followed by two colons. The remote host now is something like: "123.123.123.123::5000"
I don't get it... Why does it happen that when I connect via TightVNC that it doesn't show the same output on my PC as it shows on the direct output from the R-Pi to the monitor? Weird shit... I'm gonna try the xrdp below to see if I get different result.. But fucking weird that it is as if I'm getting a different user logged in on the R-Pi when I connect through TightVNC Fuck this shit... Tried everything it seems. But still only get connected to a fucking stupid virtual desktop instead of the HDMI output one.... ANYONE got a solution to this?
Hi. Thanks for this video :) Putty is working fine for me. I have a problem with accessing Raspberry PI GUI with TightVNC. I did everything same as you but I have a problem with 8:35 please check log below. When I try to log with tighVNC it says:"Error in TightVNC Viewer: No such host is known". When I try to use ip adress it says: "Error in TightVNC Viewer:No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it". Do you have any idea how to fix this ? you should have also shown how to use sftp with filezila to move files easily between your pc and your pi
love you, man
Thank you so much for making this video !!!
TYSM BRO WORKS LIKE A CHARM
IMPORTANT! Make sure SSH is enabled on your PI before doing any of this. Will save you much frustration.

HELP!!! It says "Network Error: Connection Refused"
Thanks... super helpful!!!!
Do you know if you can install tightvnc with Openelec (Kodi) as well?
Hello, I've been trying for days and my vnv viewer only connects with the black screen, how can I solve this please? Thank you, Sandra
Nicely Explained keep up Thanks

Will this work with just retropie installed or do the Pi need raspbian also installed ?

How many user can you have on the free version? Thanks.

Yeah, it normally shows "IP" of local connection.
To access it from different location you need to type in RouterIP:RpiPort
It works ! Thank you very much but....when connecting a camera (picamera) to the pi, I do not see the camera image on my laptop screen. Any help?
I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
From where are you? Your family?
wouldn't the sd card get corrupted if we don't shut down the raspberry pi safely ?
I also tried static IP address from arp -a . No joy if entered into PuTTY.
So I used to have the ip address to my pi and then I installed an image from someone (full of games) and now I cannot see the address or have it show up anywhere. Even the Show IP just has a bunch of unrelated data. So somehow the image makes it impossible to connect?

I ping the IP then put the result into Putty. It says connection refused and I have ssh installed on RPI.

Hope this helps =)
I am always facing the problem of "Connection to (ip) time out". Please help! Thanks.
Awesome... thanks.. :)
I'm getting the same error and I have tried everything. putty fatal error connection refused and I know my address for the pi
im doing all the right steps
Thanks a lot !
It's Grate . : )
"ping raspberrypi" when i am typing this command in cmdprompt it is showing "ping request could not find out"
do you only have retropie installed ?
Does this void the warranty of the raspberry pi 2?
+Zeeshan Ahmed Bro...

PuTTy " Network error: Connection refused" big problem
Make sure you have ssh enabled, check with sudo raspi-config. Also make sure your Pi is on the same wifi.
I don't get it... Why does it happen that when I connect via TightVNC that it doesn't show the same output on my PC as it shows on the direct output from the R-Pi to the monitor? Weird shit... I have resolved this issue by adding :5901 behind ip address --> **.*.*.***:5901 . I have found it in other tutorial and everything is working fine for me now. Hope it will work for you too ;)
Ľuboš Paštéka It worked for me. Thank you very much ;)
