The woke diverse casting is incredibly forced too since this is suburban wisconsin in the 90s. There wasn't a single kid in 90s Wisconsin with a friend group that "diverse". It's distracting for anyone who lives in reality. Like 90s suburban Wisconsin was 99% white. You'd be lucky to have an Asian or black kid in your class, let alone multiple in your friend group. It's as ridiculous as having a show about 1800s China and filling it with every race besides Chinese. It just doesn't make sense at all.
For me, I don't care about the race of characters. I relate to the themes of the show, and the characters struggles. Some of my favorite characters ever are different races than I am. However, when its this forced identity politics crap I can't relate to the character because I know they're there to fit a quota. Since I know the demographics of Wisconsin, it becomes insanely distracting to me.
Hollywood wouldn't dare make a show about Southside Chicago and have it mostly white people. Yet they make 90s Wisconsin mostly minority kids? Yeah bullshit. I live in southeastern CT which is 1000x more diverse than Wisconsin. Growing up in the 90s I had 1 black kid in my entire school and 1 half Asian girl. Yet if a show was made about my life today it'd be 60% minority and 50% lbgt. It's ridiculous. Especially with how insular black and Asian groups are. Like sure, blacks are 13% of America, but they're mostly in black areas of cities. It was EXTREMELY rare for a black kid to be in an affluent suburban in the 90s in Wisconsin. Hell in reality the kids parents would be wary of her being friends with a black girl and would be locking their doors and shit. And there's probably like 7 Asians in all of Wisconsin for christs sake. Also the gay kid would not be out, if he was he would probably be kicked out of his house, and would probably be ostracized by friends. None of this is good, but it's what the culture was at the time. And it's like the kid is like a tiny bowen yang. Also No one would be saying shit like "patriarchal society". It's clearly not a 90s show, it's a show about gen z kids in a gen z version of the 90s.
It's just so annoying since even a show called that 90s show isn't accurately depicting the 90s at all. It's a gen z version of the 90s, with gen z attitudes by forcing diversity, anti white male thinking, and lbgt stuff. A 90s kid in Wisconsin coming out as lbgt would most likely be disowned and be called the F word by their friends. A 90s kid bringing home gay, Asian and black friends in suburban wisconsin would be yelled at. Even in a progressive home, the race of the friends would be constantly talked and joked about. And you wouldn't find most of these races outside of the cities. I guarantee there wasn't a single friend group this diverse in all of 90s wisconsin, even in artsy progressive circles within cities. It's distracting and makes 0 sense and is pure catering to woke gen z self hating white kids. Since 90%+ of the fans of that 70s show are white.
The funniest part is that the original series even touched on how wisconsin is so white through the inclusion of fez. He was such a fish out of water since there were only white people in these suburban areas. That's why it was so funny to have him to be a foil to the culture of the upper Midwest. The creators had to make him an international student since there'd be no other reason for him to live there. Yet now a majority of the town is ethnic?
And the writing is just horrible like a Disney show like you said. This was so dissapointing but I knew it would be once I saw the trailer. Oh well atleast we still have the original.

    • @KaiDecadence
      @KaiDecadence Год назад +3

All of what you said is very true. It would be one thing if the show was set in a place like NYC, Chicago, or Los Angeles but it's not, it takes place in a mid-west suburbia. The thing about the 90s is that if it was truly made authentically, it would be a "problematic" show but it's the way things were and it would just get (annoyingly) crucified by the Twitter mob but in a situation like this, they have to not care about Twitter reception in the first place.
Also to add to what you said about how that 70s show touched on the lack of racial diversity, they even did this with Hyde's biological father William Barnett and his half sister. Red & Kitty having to wrestle with how awkward it was for them meeting a black person face to face and somewhat when Angie was hooking up with Kelso. At the time I found those plot points annoying but with reflection, I got why it was written that way lol
And see I'm already thinking of ideas that could've made the show better. Let the main cast be white and a black family moves to Wisconsin and the black kid befriends Eric's daughter. And for the gay character, you're correct that back in those days being openly homosexual in a small mid-western area was almost unheard of. What they could've done is have one of the characters be gay but closeted and trying to work through it (albeit in a more comedic way.
Really I could go on. I know some people might take offense to your criticism but it's a total valid one, one that would've made the show better and made it more faithful to the era it's trying to depict.

“They wouldn’t dare have a south side Chicago should with mostly whites” literally that’s what Shameless is.
“The Gay kid wouldn’t be out” They literally had multiple gay people in the original show: Eric’s friend played by Joseph Gordon Levitt, the gay couple at Red and Kitty’s place, etc. Also you think just because you had one perspective growing up in the 90s that that’s representative. I grew up in Northeast Michigan which is like right next to Wisconsin and it was a melting pot. My friend group with was me (black guy) two Mexican twins, a white girl and an Asian. Not to mention the character of Hyde is mixed with a black father and sister; and please tell me how “a majority of the town is ethnic” even though we’ve only seen a fraction of people from ONE neighborhood 😂 All I hear is a bunch of buzzwords and intolerant talking points with no real substance or thoughts put into them

That 70s Show started off very fresh, fully embracing the 70s aesthetic in the first season in particular, full of references, music, and addressing events of the era,
before becoming more of a contemporary sitcom in later seasons that just happened to have 70s clothes in it.
It just became easier to drop a lot of the effort once the audience was hooked.
One of the problems with this new show, is it’s been almost 20 years since we’ve been in this world,
And we are more than ever in a 90s nostalgia craze,
Yet the very first season barely makes any effort to feel like the 90s.
A few name/needle drops, but there’s nothing in a particular scene to communicate when the show takes place.
Every 90s thing that appears is treated as if it’s the first time our characters are seeing it, as opposed to existing in a world where it’s a thing.
When Eric sees Star Wars in the original series, it makes a cataclysmic impact on him as a person, and influences the show going forward.
When Red and Kitty discover something as monumental as the internet for the first time,
It’s forgotten in the next episode.
The series needs to know the audience understands this is a sequel to That 70s Show,
While also knowing that it can move on from it, and become what it’s name is.
Until then, it’s starting off stale, as opposed to becoming stale, which isn’t a great sign.

One thing that really stood out for me is that in That 70s Show all the characters had very clear and different personalities since the 1st season. Fez was the weird foreign kid that said and did unexpected and confusing things; Donna was the cool girl next door mixed with "one of the boys" vibe and a feminist view; Jackie was the annoying girly girl who was really self-centered and bossy; Kelso was the charming dumb funny guy who was very dramatic with over the top reactions; Hyde was the bad boy who hates everything and loves rock music; and Eric was the dork afraid of the world with poor social skills. Also, from the very beggining it is clear that Hyde, Kelso, Eric and Donna have been friends for ages, Jackie is there because she's dating Kelso and Fez is the new foreign kid that they kinda adopt. The dynamics of the group are clear and you see that from the way they interact, the type of conversations they have, the way that they feel really comfortable around each other, but at first Jackie is sort of outta place and Fez just goes along with everything. And as time goes by the dynamics change because their relationships evolve.
In That 90s Show, all of this is pretty unclear. You know Leia = Eric, Gwen = Hyde mixed with Donna, Jay = Kelso, Ozzie = Fez, the couple (don't even know their names) = Jackie and Kelso in a more subtle way without the fighting and cheating. However, you see 0 personality from most of them. All I know so far is that Leia is a dork, Gwen is kind of a baddie, Ozzie is gay and Jay is imitating Kelso in a awkward way. The couple has -10 development, you just see that the guy is also a imitation of Kelso with no interests or likes beside the relationship and the girl is a more lovable version of Jackie. And the dynamics are also weird, because they barely talk to Leia before they start going to the house and the basement without her even being there. It makes no sense to me. The guy in the couple and Jay seem to be best friends but you don't see them having a conversation ever, Gwen and the girl in the couple seem to kind of dislike each other for no reason and Ozzie is just there and doesn't seem to have a real connection with anyone. Also, the group seems to hangout all together only because the guy in the couple and Gwen are siblings, while at the same time the siblings kinda don't talk to each other.
What I love so much about That 70s Show is that they felt like a real group of friends doing stupid or silly young things, like sneaking out to a concert, going to the movies, smoking weed in the basement, going out to eat, actual normal things that normal teenagers do. That 90s Show doesn't have the same vibe, because they don't feel like an actual group of friends. Also, everything is centered around Leia doing things for the first time, but it's not as exciting or realistic as I think they planned out to be. I'm not saying that it is impossible to happen, but to have Leia go to the mall chasing guys to have her first kiss feels wildly unrealistic to me.

You nailed it. None of the new 90s Show teen characters have a discernible personality. They all feel like the same character because the dialogue is so repetitive, bland, and stale. Also, unfair as it may be, they are all younger than the original 6 actors (except for Mila Kunis) were in 1998, thus collectively less experienced as actors. It was just an amazing stroke of luck that Kunis was just as good as Jackie as all of the older original "teens" Eric, Donna, Hyde, Fez, Kelso were in their roles. It's really astonishing that they all were perfect for their respective roles AND had great chemistry as a group. Then add to that all of the great supporting/adult characters Red, Kitty, Laurie, Bob, Midge that were there from the beginning. It's obvious the original showrunners and casting put a ton of thought and work into casting and writing for the show and new exactly what they wanted each character to be.

I haven't watched the show yet but as a big That 70s Show fan, i was nervous about this show from the moment it's announcement was made. Part of me was excited because they were getting most of the cast back for cameos and I do like 1990s era. But on the other hand I wasn't entirely sure if the new cast would bring that same comedic energy that the original cast had.
The show's been out awhile now and I'm hearing all kinds of things a pretty mixed reception though I have heard somewhat consistently that the show feels like a Nickelodeon and/or Disney Channel show and THAT is something I'm not looking forward to when I do get around to watching. But I mean even watching the show in motion from the clips provided, I can see that Nickelodeon/Disney Channel vibe as well, especially with the black girl talking to the main girl, it totally felt like something you'd see in Hannah Montana...
And as far as the cast goes, from the clips I've seen of the Asian kid, yeah I don't find him funny neither and I don't think it's his fault necessarily but the writing. The show's aesthetic also doesn't make me think 90s neither. I dunno if it's the way they're filming it but as someone who watches a lot of 90s media to this day, the aesthetic quality just isn't there.. And it's not like they can't recreate that quality, like for example the 2016 movie "The Love Witch" has a total 1960s TV/Film aesthetic so it would've been nice if they did that for That 90s Show, you know give the show that "dirty" and less polished visual that we saw back in those times and not so much the super clean and polished visual that sitcoms eventually got in the late 2000s to 2010s. Speaking of which, some have mentioned the dialogue and how it doesn't feel 90s and from the trailer and clips, I see that as well. Going off these first impressions, the characters sound like gen z kids more than 90s teens and I feel like that's the problem. The "new" gang are people who were born in the 2000s and I feel like they were better off using actors who were born in the late 80s, early 90s instead. I know it's because they want the cast to look like teenagers but I think that they definitely could've found actors/actresses who were around in the 90s who can still pass off as late teens much like the cast of that 70s show.
    Anyway good vid!

That 70's Show is one of the few TV series I have actually watched all the way through and I one I grew up with so I am exactly the target audience for this show. To be honest, I thought this 90's show could have been a complete train wreck and it's not as bad as I thought it would be. I wouldn't say it IS bad, but it's just ok.
The main issue I think is that 70's Show had 20 episodes for the first season and this only had 10. Subsequently, it feels like major plot points and character development is happening way too fast. It doesn't feel natural and doesn't have enough time to build it's arcs in a believable way. Does also feel like some old characters "devolved" like Jackie grew so much as a character in the original and obviously can't have Hyde back but the solution to put her back with Kelso and make her like early seasons Jackie didn't work for me. Know they were kinda in a corner with that, but not a fan of their solution. On the topic of Eric wasn't that dorky, I think they kinda made him a little too dorky in this. Like he teaches Star Wars at University? It's kinda funny but ultimately after the chuckle it's kinda dumb.
Could ramble on, but TLDR, the new show isn't bad, but it has problems and I don't think they can be addressed with the time and writing constrictions placed on modern tv. Here's hoping though, because I do like the premise of our generation getting our own "70's show" in a meta way it could work really well.

As someone who grew up watching that 70's show, this new show falls so flat. It feels like Disney channel with curse words. This is just a cheap remake to make a cash grab. The original cast like Red and Kitty are hard carrying the show and frankly, that's not enough for me. I wish networks would stop trying to remake classics, it's not the same. If they would just invent new shows/movies instead of ruining old ones, who knows, maybe those would become classics.

The only time That 90s Show is entertaining is when old cast members make a cameo appearance. I find the new cast to be pretty lifeless and dull. Do you know what was popular in the 90s? Cause the writers sure don't! Video games were huge but the only pop culture reference I've seen was about Donkey Kong. You mean Donkey Kong Country, a game that was released in 1993 for the Super Nintendo? Nope! Just plain old 80s Donkey Kong. How about movie references? Nope! Despite the blockbuster film, Terminator 2 Judgment Day being released in 1991 That 90s Show didn't think to mention it. Meanwhile That 70s Show built a whole episode around Star Wars. Kitty and Red are basically keeping this show on life support at this point.

Biggest mistakes: red and kitty were peripheral characters, as adults always are in the world of teenagers. The success of the original was based on strong lead characters, smart dialogue, and real heart. Also the clothes and hair were actually 70s. But here, clothes and hair aren't 90s, nobody said bro, we said dude. We said bites. Hence in that 70s show the script sometimes had characters say bites, but in the actual 70s nobody said bites 😂 they said groovey. It's all ass backwards and missing Hyde anyway 👎 gnarly try dudes, this is a post Instagram knockoff and lacks charisma.
And this is only from seeing still shots and trailers. Wasted opportunity to get at the hilarious, irreverent 90s comedy (see also married with children, singing before downhill seasons)

I totally agree about with this take on the new show. I ended the season not even remembering the names of most of the new teen characters because they were that forgettable. And none of their humor was funny. The old characters carried whatever little humor there was. Eric, Donna, Fez, Kelso, Jackie, Red, Kitty, Bob, Leo, Fenton pretty much didn't miss a beat. Glad Fez was in several episodes throughout the season because he was arguably the funniest original character along with Kelso.
Yeah, I'm in the minority of wishing Jackie and Fez stayed together. But I know a lot of that had to with Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher being married in reality. Jackie had moved on from both Kelso and Hyde with Fez and it would have been nice to see at least one full season of them as a couple on the new series. I know it would have been just cameo appearances, but that's something.

I agree on some of your points and disagree on others. I think the struggles Leis is going through are stupid. My first impressions were “these kids seems way too similar to That 70’s Show.” I also think it would have been better if Eric and Dons were the main adults in the show and seeing then deal with the “dumbasses” would have been funnier. I think Eric trying to pass off sage Star Wars advice while occasionally threatening to put his foot up someone’s ass would have been funny. Where I see this show suffering the most is it’s 10 episode format and how shows like this really need a good 20 episodes a season to build its characters.

  • @t4ngy
    @t4ngy Год назад

I think if it was a different situation Jackie and Hyde would have been together in the new show, and they would probably be Gwen's parents, as I think she resembles Hyde A LOT. I think it's sad that they put Jackie and Kelso back together and with a son like Jay... I didn't really like his character, he seems pretty dumb, but not like Kelso. I mean, Kelso was really dumb, BUT he was really funny and brave, as in he was capable of doing anything just for the fun of it, without thinking about consequences. Also, Kelso was charming and exaggerated, dramatic even, and shallow in a funny way that matched Jackie. Jay on the other hand is not charming, he seems awkward, like he's trying too hard to imitate Kelso, almost as if he had Kelso as a mentor (not as a father).
Leia and Gwen are clearly meant to be female versions of Eric and Hyde, which I don't hate, but I feel like Leia is so over the top dorky and it doesn't fit the vibe of the show. No one there cares about how dorky she is, no one even acknowledges when she says or does something dorky. With Eric, the gang made fun of him for being a dork OR they actually showed interest in something he also liked. I also think Gwen and Leia have a lot of parallel scenes to Hyde and Eric, like the tap thing and then when Gwen convinces Leia to lie to go to a rave, like Hyde would also convince Eric to lie so they could get the car to go to concerts or something.

The issue with the feminist thing is Donna sounded like a 70s campus feminist. This "90s" feminist is saying stuff that no one said before the rise of the woke-left. No teenage girl in the 90s was talking about the dreaded patriarchy. It's dressed as the 90s but these characters miss the mark. Unlike the original cast, they pulled off the 70s.
