On March 8th, 2013, Snarky Puppy and a host of special guests convened at the Jefferson Center in Roanoke VA. The project was to record a series of live performances in audio and video that would bring attention and benefit to the ongoing work of the center. The Jefferson Center is a non-profit arts organization that is revitalizing a key neighborhood in Roanoke with the restoration of Jefferson High School and the renovation of the Shaftman Performance Hall. The hall brings world class music to the local community through the Music Lab, providing education and recording space for local children.
The Music Lab at Jefferson Center is working daily to pull from every social and economic class of the Roanoke community and create the next wave of real, human musicians. They host low cost or free after-school programs for any interested young people filled with visits by guest artists, private instrumental instruction, and recording training. Wafting out of the little studios and rehearsal rooms on the third floor of Jefferson Center, you can hear Afro-beat in Swahili, hip-hop in Liberian Kreyol, the blues coming from the guitar of a 13 year-old prodigy, and the undeniable sound of young musicians growing. It's a thing that needs to be supported at all costs across this country, and by purchasing this record, you've done it.
A portion of every sale will go to the Music Lab at Jefferson Center.

Lalah: *splits her voice in two*
Backup singers: are we a joke to you
She does that a lot .. I wasn't impressed with it. It sounds demonic. However, that's what makes her music unique.
This comment😂😂
@@michellec.4994 you had one job. To get the joke.😂😂
I've seen her live performance....I get the jokes....not impressed!!
@@michellec.4994 I understand that it's not your personal cup of tea, but the technical vocal prowess to sing a CHORD is nothing short of astounding. Sure, you don't like it, but "impressive" is a term meaning "evoking admiration through skill" and if you can't admire the skill on display here, I feel sorry for you.
When you make an entire room of accomplished musicians go wild, you have made it.
Lalah's pedigree is insane, not to diminish her incredible talent. If you haven't already, check out her dad's incredible work. And if you have, sorry for suggesting the obvious. :)

Multiphonic overtone?? Let me just harmonize with myself!! Whatchu say nigh! This is why she is my favorite artist. Just brilliant!!!
9 years later and I still get the same chills I had the first time I heard this masterpiece. Classic.
EVERY. TIME.
Facts 💯
Same!!
Me too!!!! And I always have to replay it at least 3 times. ❤❤❤
YES! This is pure brilliance
Let me get this straight. Split her voice to harmonize with HERSELF. Moved with fluid ease from baritone to the top of the soprano scale. It's over. Mediocrity has taken over the music industry and it's an injustice. I'm not hating on anyone's style, I'm just saying make room for everybody. It is a crime that this does not have 100+M views. This is the baddest I've seen.
Jazzy Moni when I tell you I literally had to pause the video so my brain could compute what she had done and what I just heard. I was looking around dumbfounded. I couldn't believe she had just done that, and live nonetheless.
Styl849 Right!! LOL...I actually hit the rewind to see if I really heard what I thought I did. That is one of the dopest things to ever hit RUclips. She is so underrated.
Im sitting in freakin Starbucks grinning like crazy looking and listening to that! OMFG!
Literally gave me chills

Oh my goodness. I said the SAME thing.😂

I absolutely love when the musicians are in awe of what they're hearing while delivering some soul vibrating melodies themselves, praise the Lord for the talents!
I prefer to praise the people themselves
Amen.
AMÉM! Bom gosto é pra todos mas infelizmente, poucos de fato têm.
What's so wrong about her Grammy win is that Something is a centerpiece on her first/second album over 20 years ago. It took Snarky Puppy and their larger audience to get the masses hip to Lalah, when in reality, she's had a cult following among Jazz and R&B lovers since 1989. That Grammy win was long, long overdue.
its real serious when a drummer gets off the set.
Right! Lol
Right bruh I'm just speechless right now .....
Daiquan Fox "off his seat" is what you wanted to write, i guess... ;-)
Kaktus Kastl I'm pretty sure he meant set. Because I guess he wasn't mentioning his seat, but his drum set... Drummers NEVER leave their drum set during a performance...
Yep, he meant set. The drum set.
Her voice woke my musician husband out of his sleep.... I'm wearing headphones.
I come back every couple months for years now. Can’t get enough. The way Michael looks at her because his love of noises
I know they got Grammy for this, but even Grammy seems like underappreciation
Still speechless
Seriously
Think about this man, These guys and gals are professional Jazz musicians that travel the world and vibe with some of the best musicians world fucking wide and yet they were still all jumping out of their seats like a bandmate did something amazing at garage band practice for what this woman had just done. These musicians have probably seen it all and yet still her vocal was fucking mind blowing for them. Truly phenomenal vocalist.
Amen...🎁🎁
well said
Michael Jordan jump shot over Ehlo Family!!
That's just another way GOD shows himself 🎁🎁
+Christian Cooper I completely agree, but if you watch other Snarky Puppy videos one of the great things is their evident enthusiasm. A lot of the time they look like they're on the verge of high-fiving after someone pulls off a particularly cool solo
The joy she brings to the rest of the band is a palpable thing as is the respect they give her. A magical moment…
I live for their reaction to her polyphonic singing!!!!!

That's real talent. My daughter who's really into music heard this and came running into my room. She made me play it back like 5 times so she could catch the notes. She said this was amazing and it was!
This woman has an amazing gift.
Folks don’t forget the incredible singer/songwriter Brenda Russell who originally sang and wrote this song (and Snarky/Lalah put this ill arrangement on it). Brenda Russell also wrote “Get Here” (made popular by Oleta Adams) and “Piano in the Dark”. Much respect!
True! It was a cover that Lalah did on her debut in 1990.

She has been covered and sampled by Baby Face, Oleta Adams, Luther Vandross, Patii Austin, Ruben Studdard, Ramsey Lewis, Janet Jackson,Tupac Shakur, Chance The Rapper, Thaila , Flo Rida, Ariana Grande and Still not a player, Big Pun!!!! People need to know of her Greatness!!!! The music industry is not good at doin their do diligence at letting people know of musical phenomenons like Brenda Russell!!! SHE SO DAGGONE GOOD I STARTED LAUGHING FOR NO REASON!!!!
She must've been made in a lab to do that with her voice..C'MON!
I don’t think most people understand or appreciate what she did. The musicians and the singers absolutely do. It sounded like she split her vocal cords and sung two different notes at the same time. Simply amazing!!!!
THREE notes at the same time.
I know it sounds good to the amateur ear too. I don’t know what they’re talking bout
@@N0B0DY_SP3C14L Yo I actually know a bit about this. It's to do with the relationship between harmonic overtones. The interplay between 2 overtones can create a third 'phantom' overtone which doesn't actually have a fundamental. This technique is used quite a bit in drum and bass music to create movement in bass parts by detuning the oscillators. doing so creates a third tone which is outside of the human frequency range and is thus perceived as silence and gives a bassline movement. What Lalah is doing here is creating a phantom frequency between the 2 notes which she is singing which is FUCKING INSANE. Like jeeeeeeesus I can't stop watching this it's so amazing that I actually got a bit overwhelmed and cried a little

When she harmonized that chord with her self during the scats and the drummer got up almost running away😊 makes me smile uncontrollably, every single time I replay that part. Talented soul indeed.
E não é qualquer baterista em questão;

Welcome to the snarky club. It's really anyone with good taste who hears the band. I hope you've got bitten hard with the bug too! There's so much good material on the internet for this band. I may say I'm most into Quarter Master, but that's only what it is today...
Mongolian multi-toned throat singing. Look it up! I think she was using a similar technique, it sounded like that a little bit.
PatrickDAllen1 If you are referring to 'overtone singing' I believe you are not correct. overtones are usually much higher pitch than the root, and it takes quite some overtones to get to the interval she sings the last. I may be wrong. :) good music nevertheless
Filip Korošec I took a class on Southeast Asian music and we talked about overtone singing in regards to Tuvan Throat Singing. The overtones produced can be all over the spectrum, so it is a similar technique
this band never ceases to amaze... and lalah, well, you dont need anymore compliments than your own band colleagues loosing their shit over your performance. this pretty much sums it up, even for professionals this kind of control in her voice is just jaw-dropping. thank y'all for pushing it to the next level, and subsequently making our days.

I don´t think those are harmonics, more like multi-phonics, what some people call "diads" which are a clean, tuned way to break a note into two
those are for wind instruments, by the way. I'd never heard them in a singer

There are somethings in life that defies description. This is one if them!
Lalah Hathaway has always been in a class by herself. This masterful performance with the band Snarky Puppy is not only a testament to who Lalah is as an artist, but she unveils a rare vocal trait that only a very few have mastered.
Her father, the late Donnie Hathaway, has to be smiling from Heaven everytime he hears his daughter's voice.
This is Magnum Opus at its very best!❤❤❤❤❤
The way everyone plays their part, how they feel the rhythm to play different parts to make this piece come to life like a journey, the movement of everyone, Lalah’s voice as the conductor, the language of the groove. WHOO!!!! This is a constant revisit for me.

But I don't want to look anymore, this was already so much. They capture curiosity and virtuosity in these performances like nothing I've ever seen. I know very little about jazz techniques and stopped playing music more than ten years ago, but this is both accessible and incredible.
Thank you Snarky Puppy. Thanks for sharing your joy in these videos.
WTF JUST HAPPEN? I'm in tears over here! We just witness an angel sing...💗
I been trying today to figure out how to do what she did at 6:24
or so but alas she's a freak of nature. No like frfr. Found out through TERRELL that she was born with some weird vocal cord discrepancy that ended up being a blessing to us all. Ain't that how God always works. Never underestimate the power of your uniqueness. She got me round here preaching.
Preach!
You can learn it ! Look up polyphonic singing. Theres a few tutorials on youtube... I've been trying.... for a long periodically time lol x
There are monks who sing like this in their chants they sing two octaves in one voice. So this can be learned.
what's so special about that voice? i can't really tell. but it sounds "ghostly". i think i may be retarded.
Christian Nicholas she sings two and three notes at once by herself with polyphonic singing. It's a 'trick' even less common and more difficult than mastering whistle tones or overtones.
the energy after the split was phenomenal
Where was I when this magic happened? She really melts my Hearthaway
I have seen this so many times and the moment the vocal harmony starts… my eyes get wet. Every.Single.Time.
This sister is a surgical vocalist!!!!!.......Outstanding!!!
at certain moments I hear so much of her father in Lalah's voice. that voice is magical.

+Jorge Ariza the late Donny Hathaway is her father
+Jorge Ariza i'm 14? Age doesn't matter just listen

+Jorge Ariza Check Donny's "These Songs For You, Live!" Album.
...and also stop dropping your age under videos for no reason. It's kinda annoying and will make you cringe in a few years when you read your own posts. :P
I’ve come back to this video so many times!!!!! 😊😊😊😊😊😊 makes me happy
Her scatting is top tier. Her voice is purely velvety
