    Van Halen said that this song was in part inspired by AC/DC's "Back In Black". So it has that swagger and leer which was also perfect for Roth.

    Hey Chod... Van Halen has a lot of gems like this scattered through their albums. Most of the hits that got played on radio a lot were the "Van Halen sound" but they did a lot of different types of songs. Dig deep, you're sure to find some other songs you like a lot. Oh yeah, and as a drummer too I can tell you Alex Van Halen is crazy good. He has a great groove and pocket and can also bring the heat when he needs to. I was a senior in high school when Van Halen's first album came out and immediately loved Alex's drumming.

  • @jenniferfoster1692
    @jenniferfoster1692 2 года назад +8

    Van Halen had a huge variety of sounds, they really didn't box themselves into 1 thing. Yes, Jump, Panama, Hot For Teacher are some of the big blockbusters, but they have so many different sounding songs. Listen to Little Guitars, for an acoustic Spanish guitar style intro, for example. He didn't always shred the guitar, he was amazing on melodies, rythms and funky sounds too. Definitely try Little Guitars, it's a huge fan favorite.

    Absolutely Chod! This was the band whose music was played on boom boxes every day on the bus- so cool you picked up on that. It’s the whole reason I know this song.. it’s not even a deep cut to me.. it just was part of Van Halen in general. This album was so huge - you kinda had to know most of the songs.

    Eddie was more musical than any other talent he had. The subtlety & nuance in this track proves it. And the whole band were played just as freaking good. The lyrics. The bass. The drums. This is peak Van Halen.

    I'd also like to suggest you check out Eddie's son, Wolfgang Van Halen...his band is Mammoth WVH. His song "Don't Back Down' is incredible. He joined Van Halen as the bassist at 16 years old, plays all the instruments on his album and has an incredible voice. He's not a Van Halen replica, he has his own style, but it is rock. Watch 'Don't Back Down' first, then if you want a amazing, heartfelt song about his dad and his relationship, (they were best friends), watch 'Distance". If you don't cry then you're dead inside, lol. It's his only song that isn't a rocker, but it's beautiful. The video is filled with old family video starting when he was born and his dad taking care of him, up to the end..it's amazing.

    It's interesting to note, to all the drummers out there, that alex always played the drums to Eddie's guitar groove which is why people always think of Al as playing slightly behind the beat... Ed and al were the rythm section with the bass filling in the gaps.

    That solo was straight up jazz fusion, and as many of times that I’ve heard this song, because I’m watching and listening to it as a reaction, I’m catching myself begin to catch parts and sounds that I’d never paid attention to before.
    Wow he surely was awesome!

    Ed was listening to tons of Allan Holdsworth, an insanely gifted virtuoso jazz fusion guitarist, when they recorded this, and it clearly influenced his solo work on this song. Eddie was inspired by AC/DC on this one, and he described it in recent years as "almost a jazz version of Back In Black", with a similar beat, maybe a tad slower. From a drumming point of view, the most distinct thing about Alex to me is the insanely dry snare sound! Why Alex does that I don't know but it sets him apart from even Neil Peart IMO. Isolate that snare sound and then duplicate it. You will enjoy drumming that much more I think.

    I think you mentioned that you’ve noticed that Van Halen has two sides musically, a softer side and a more aggressive side. That is the difference between Van Halen with David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar. Van Halen prior to 1986 was headed up with Dave. Which is the real Van Halen. Sammy stepped in around 86. While he was a good fit and they put out good music they were never the same. Many called the band Van Haggar post Sammy. David Lee Roth was the legend. And the music with Roth is legendary.
