Brilliant stuff. The song's four chord progression -- B G#m E F# (a tonic, relative minor chord followed by 4th and 5th majors) are repeated for the entire song) is a virtually bullet-proof musical combination. As bad and corny as the lyrics and original film clip were, the writer had a solid bedrock of good chords to build upon and that's why it stands up musically. That orchestral climax at the end though.... WOW!!!
It's definitely a cover, but it's also satire. They took the idea that "Friday is so important that it needs a song," and made it even more intense and extreme than it originally was, turning the song into a slow, serious ballad, with a full orchestra.
