      @@reaganpratt2474 Thx for reference to Fall of Civilizations podcast. I believe it's very important to try to understand history as a critical tool in the tool box for processing news and media content. Since nothing is new, less anxiety & depression could be one positive result of greater understanding of current events.That would mean greater community, local, county, state and national participation.
      It also is a means to unify with neighbors and community for the best good of all. Those who lean toward authoritarian government rather than democracy in the U.S.A. will find ways to oppose such changes toward unification even when they would benefit equally if we moved together to solve our economic and social issues.

    Vasari was the PR firm for the Italian version of the Renaissance. He did much for the legends of Michelangelo, Raphael, and Leonardo Da Vinci as a trinity. Da Vinci experimented with everything, he perpetuated some mistakes and improved on others. Taking away from his genius seems to be the trend nowadays, it’s unfortunate. As classically trained artist and product of 2 scientist parents, Da Vinci has inspired countless people. Sure he used experimental painting techniques, though his Last Supper in any condition is a masterwork. The Sistine ceiling is a Herculean marvel, so is the Mona Lisa. We’ve become desensitize by art on shower curtains, bath mats, and watch faces. Even Rembrandt was largely forgotten about for a few hundred years till museums. Painting one Mona Lisa is a lifetime is enough of an accomplishment, it’s not fiddling. What really gets me is how people clamor to see it, meanwhile down the colonnade in the Louvre are 5 other Leonardo’s that are largely ignored.

      Makes me want to go back to Europe. I enjoyed hearing the story of a place in Florence where Leonardo and Michaelangelo supposedly (I feel fairly certain there is SOME evidence that they did.) hung out. Tuscany is largely delightful. Lombardy is worth seeing, also. Venice is in serious trouble and I feel the motorized boats should dock a mile away from town and put passengers on rowboats or gondolas to travel the rest of the way. Did you see how the fish returned to the canals during Covid shut down? Surprise! Fish can't swim in gasoline.

    Your solution to the mystery of the Tempest is the ONLY plausible sounding one of all the solutions I've read through the years. Simple, elegant, your explaination leaves nothing out. At the same time it covers new, unexplored territory (the cranes) deftly scoring point after point. Also, I'm so intrigued at how disparaging your tone can be when discussing Da Vinci. Then, suddenly, a 180 and BOOM! Back to respect. Felt the same way when observing my first Rembrandt face-to-face. Ended up studying it for hours. Easily! Breath taking.

    "Here we see Waldemar...with his foppish hair swept up in a point and a rakish diamond glinting in his ear...as he leads us around by the nose, convincingly answering some of the questions that many of us have about a few masterpieces of Western art. And we follow along so closely don't we?....listening intently to this portly pied piper of the museum, laughing at his jokes, marveling at the art, and nodding along with his conclusions. Leonardo portraits of females are truly mysterious. Most of them arises people's curiosity with the colors he uses, his ladies show elements of a fashionista with curls in their hair like flying with the wind. He also uses many beautiful shots that are different than all the other paintings. He includes close-up images not used by other painters. He concentrates on the ladies beauty features. I love Leonardo, he doesn't build his flying machines and many of his draft inventions, perhaps there were not at the moment in time elements necessary to do so, but they were inventions from his imagination. A futuristic approach to creativity. I do find him fascinating because his almost art that is never done is extremely passionate with elements he is not prepared to build. Often artists don't have the money to do many of their ideas and creative endeavour. In a way Leonardo invents the modern women ahead of time, the same as drafting a flying machine that couldn't be built yet.

    Great cultures generate great Art as seen through the eyes of great creators. Artists never work in a vacuum so we must discover the cultural/political context of the artists' lives. Where did they live & what motivated them to create their product? I ponder these issues every time I visit museums on a superficial level. I applaud Waldemar for the depth of research that he undertakes to enlighten us to the gestalt surrounding the Masters. He provides much food for thought & even argument. Every new thing I learn about L.DaVinci, the more I am convinced he has all the classic signs of having ADD or ADHD. Besides having above average intelligence and skills, he had the ability to hyper-focus and then be distracted and move on to a new project, often without finishing his current work. As I see in my own family, this moving-on trait is in search of something that will calm and intrigue a chaotic and constantly exploring brain.

    Leonardo da Vinci might have been the most learned man in history. A great painting contains knowledge. Besides that a painter would imbue a painting with his philosophy. The Mona Lisa was the pet project of Leonardo. He imbued it with everything he had to give it. The best painting by the greatest mind. And it shows in the Mona Lisa. That is why it is so great. And I think he wanted it to represent him and his life's work.
    I have one painting I put my all in. It stands apart from my other paintings. Maybe some day I'll have another powerful message I wish to relate.

    Thank you so much for sharing your insights, knowledge and curiosity. Your humor and wry observations illuminate Masterpieces we tend to take for granted. I had no idea La Gioconda had such an interesting history. I had only heard of her husband and her last name but never that Napoleon treasured her or that she sort of disappeared for a straight 300 years. Leonardo never turned over the work to her or her husband. Nor did I know about her subsequent "theft." Can you imagine being able to see La Gioconda daily like some billboard poster as you wander towards your morning coffee or demitasse and brioche?!! My such a view!! I learn immense amounts from your videos. I like the way they open my mind and make me think and look at paintings I've always treasured in new and different ways. I've been looking at paintings in museums since I was a wee girl - which was many decades ago and to find new ways of looking at paintings I've seen in person and over and over again in depictions is delightful. Us old dogs love learning new tricks so to speak...we love learning about new ways to look at old things. Bravo!! Gratitude. You ARE fabulous. I wish you would teach. I wish I could afford that class but until then...I'll just keep learning from your wonderful videos.

    I was an art student many years ago, very familiar with these paintings. Appreciate the interesting insights. You have successfully explained why I never liked Manet...I understood what he was doing, basically, though you have added much more detail with your analysis ofdejeuner sur l’herbe. I think you are very convincing on your theories, here. I’m certain you have pegged the Arnolfini Marriage perfectly. The lit/unlit candle clinches it for me. No WAY is that not a symbol. Playing with symbols seems to have been the great artistic obsession for the last couple of millenia, and no surprise it would (almost) crop up with the gainsborough protrait, too. I now feel I understand the Gorgione painting, and I couldn’t claim that before. Thank you. My theory on Da Vinci is that he was an engineer at heart, cursed with a talent/reputation for painting and bored out of his skull with it, constantly trying to get out of that job into something more inventive. His letters advertising his skills to monarchs always stress how inventive he could be with military arrangements, downplay his artistic skill. Art historians wring their hands about how an artist of his skill could have wasted his talents on clever set designs for plays and pageants at one point in his career, and I think miss the obvious enjoyment he would have gotten out of the problem solving.

      Finally a comment which captures what Leonardo was all about... thanks kim adams for this observation. Yes, He may have taken 4 years to paint a small square.. in the same time a whole chapel roof was done by Michelangelo.. Doesnt mean, the tons of research and ground breaking method of painting invented by Leonardo, didnt amount to anything.. His notes are a treasure trove of research and serves as an inspiration to many, even today after 500 years..

    • @kimadams2995
      @kimadams2995 2 года назад

      Jeyappria Dhevi Yes. The man single-handedly invented the scientific diagram. If you look at any textbook using illustrations to show how something works, the entire visual vocabulary employed was invented by him. And beautiful, beautiful drawing at the same time! He contributed different things than Michelangelo, but not less important things. Something else that strikes me in his paintings is their psychological muteness. The main character (Jesus, John the Baptist) frequently looks like he sees on a plane that no one around him is aware of (disciples, viewer, whoever) and can’t speak of it, because no one would understand. I always suspected that Leonardo identifies with that main character, and he, too, surrounded by other people, just finds it impossible to communicate the stuff he sees with them. Genius surrounded by people who aren’t even interested can be very, very lonely. Look at that John the Baptist painting where John simply looks at you, silently, and points upwards to God, (whom he can’t really convey ).
