One of my all time favorite bands ever- along with the mighty Watchtower. This self financed 1st album still stands the test of time- no one out there like Psychotic waltz- truly original - and that is a very difficult thing to say
First track on the greatest technical metal album ever(only Spiral Architect's "A Sceptic's Universe can compete for that title.) Keep in mind this was written around 1988 and released in '90. Talk about ahead of its time.
@Descalabro An amazing band- as are Twisted Into Form & Extol. Spiral Architect - I can really hear the PW influence in their sounds- especially the vocalist - looking forward to their new album :)
@blakfloyd well, I would consider adding Watchtower to your list and "Perfect Symmetry" and/or "No Exit" by Fates Warning. But you are right it was ahead of its time. It is still ahead of our time, come to think about it
People debating about what's prog don't seem to realise that progressive music technically just means it doesn't follow standard song structure, hence the term 'progressive'. So yeah, Dream Theater, Tool, and Psychotic Waltz Are all prog (metal). As a side note, Tool is awesome. (the guitarist and bassist aren't amazing, but Danney Carrey and Maynard James Keenan rock at what they do)
@jkvocalist Yeah, I like Twisted into Form too. I also like Extol, but I only know the old Extol. Do you have any news about a Spiral Architect album? I had quit waiting for that already.
@Descalabro I just heard they were actually in the process of recording- on their Facebook page or was it myspace? either way i was stoked as they are incredible. Extol - Synergy is my favorite album - they seemed to get the mix of aggressive and melodic parts just right on that album. Was lucky enough to see Psychotic waltz last month in Germany- have waited many many years and although a short set- (was a festival) they did not disappoint and i look forward to their new album :))
@stupgamer13 symphony x are a difernt type of prog metal,they are super technical and have an epic element in their music nothing like pw.i like both bands a lot but they are not similar.(sorry for my english)
Dream Theatre is pretty decent and all that but i mean this is amazing prog metal. :) But you gotta think of the bands that laid the ground work for bands like this!
THEY TOOK THIS OFF SPOTIFY WHY?!?!?!?!?! Oh to make room for stupid reject artists, I love PW's music its got a Iron Maiden vibe to it its amazing, bring the albums back to Spotify!
Some of what I said about the skill of Tool's members might have been a little bit opinionated on my part haha I like Justin's bass lines but in terms of technicality they don't blow my mind or anything. Not that that matters of course.
queensryche?embarresment- failed plz thts the last thing on earth they are they are by far the best band of all time just ahead of stone fury and kingdom come they are an amazing band and insperational especially their recent album american soldier which is there best since promised land
I'm glad I finally realized you were trolling due to how badly you sodomized the English language in that last comment. I actually thought you were serious in your arguements but I salute you and admit defeat since you got me to believe you were literally defending the 'ryche in the first place.
@HeavyThrasherMPDS Fuck yea man, so damn true... Tool is a disgrace towards real progressive metal bands like this. Dream Theatre is not as bad as tool but they still arent part of the good in progressive
Im giving you thumbs up for complimenting PW but dam sister, out of all bands did we have to throw megadeth in the fire like that? Megadeth are soooooo unfairly underated (have a listen to megadeth demos and see for your self how progressive they actually are. Mustaine puts together these absolutely epic masterpeices (full of musical and timing changes) but then, to keep as many people on board and happy,, he actually edits the hell out of them till they are a typical 3 to 5 minute long semi mainstream metal track (for the albums) and i totally understand his way of thinking and editing.... He does it for the sake of the megadeth brand (for the majority of non musicians dont understand to appreciate progressive music and there is nothing worse than people not liking your brand (especially when its from not understanding the progressive concept musically)! Im just saying!!!!!
this album is so fucking great
one of the best albums in metal music
More people must find Psychotic waltz and listen to their music

The Record Companies failed to sign these guys when they should have. I used to watch them in the clubs in San Diego.

holy shit these dudes are fucking amazing!
i think PSYCHOTIC WALTZ - TOOL - AND DREAM THEATER ARE AWSOME!!!!
@Descalabro

@LostRules88 I have listened to it, and I don't like it, but I respect them as musicians. Simply as that
@jkvocalist Would you consider adding Spiral Architect to that list?

@oiletful1
And they both come to my town :D

Good shit, I just wish that their vocals were so reminiscent of speed metal and (some)thrash.
The devili cried at the 4:19 moment

So....is this a song about cuphead?
no, not even close.

um, no , in that case then every metal song would sound like megadeth,,,
@HeavyThrasherMPDS Fuck yea man, so damn true... Tool is a disgrace towards real progressive metal bands like this. Dream Theatre is not as bad as tool but they still arent part of the good in progressive
wueensryche is way better thn dream theater and so is fates warning
Pretty sure this came first anyhow. Megadeth wishes they had Megatalent like these guys had. Not to say they're not talented AF...but PW....odang.
Im giving you thumbs up for complimenting PW but dam sister, out of all bands did we have to throw megadeth in the fire like that?

Really? Yeah, Adam Jones is overrated, but Justin is a pretty baller bassist
@HeavyThrasherMPDS All i needed to see, the whole "trve" thing has now expanded to prog?... Geez, that's so childish... Shut up and enjoy the music.
