Been rebuilding my homelab, almost done rebuilding the proxmox server then on to the NAS. Always fun to watch other people's journey homleabbing, it can be frustrating now and again but there's always more to do and learn.
Thanks for watching fam. I’d love to learn more about your homelab setup! And you are very right, homelabbing can be insanely frustrating. But the frustration typically leads to learning more.
@@dleer_defi My setup is pretty simple, opnsense router, truenas server for storage and proxmox for VM's plus some client machines. Adding a separate pihole machine and rebuilding the proxmox server from an older xeon machine to an epyc 7302. Then I'll probably rebuild the NAS but that's in the future.
You are blessed to have such powerful hardware where an Alienware or i5-8500 gets to run Pi-Hole. All that power isn't necessary. I hope you get free electricity.
I started tinkering with such things, but the power bill when it come in made that a short lived tinker. Doubled my power bill, and even with solar still added a several hundred dollars to the bill.
Congratulations for your awesome setup. that server could be fine for IA SERVER, (theo one left to go). you need middle to high gamma power computing to run it but looks like the budget isnt´t a trouble for you
Thank you! After I recorded this video I educated myself on SAS drives quite a bit. I’m looking forward to sharing my array of upgrades for the PowerEdge T420 and how I decided to tackle storage
Thank you for the warm welcome! I had to do a lot of troubleshooting with my modem / ISP to get Plex to work remotely. Now the only issue is that Plex incorrectly labels a few TV show series as movies. Beyond that Plex has been great for my family and I. That being said I am definitely interested in Jellyfin and will start doing some testing on my end. Why do you prefer it?
@@dleer_defi just looks nicer.. ma girl loves the phone app.. and works gr8 on my LG TV app... and.. well that very problem with TV shows & Movies can be sorted by having two different directories at the top (or selecting each series as a "SHOWS folder").. the IDENTIFY in Jelly on each "title" is gr8 if anything isn't auto detected. only thing I don't like is not being able to play m2ts folders or VOB folders, has a nice set of plugins.. I'd suggest "jellyscrub" and "merge versions" as being a must, have a play with it for sure!
But how do you manage the noise? And on the T430,T420 I hope that you removed the cooling shroud only for the video because it is really important for the cooling.
I have a lot to learn about my RAID controller(s) and optimal configs. Luckily I have a few big storage upgrades in the works so now is a great time to build my knowledge base.
Yes, for TrueNAS this RAID controleris not a good choice. Any RAID controler with a battery is not a good choice if you want to use it with TrueNAS because the RAID controler is doing the RAID work, not TrueNAS... That's not a bad one, just not good for any NAS with software RAID.
Cant find a Dell PowerEdge T430 under 500 Euro. So i dont know how you got one for 40? TrueNAS is not recommended to run in a VM it should be run in a bare bone. As standalone.
The T420 was $40, I made a separate video about my budget T420 build. My T430 was $600 before I started upgrades. Why don’t you think TrueNas should run as a vm?
Welcome to the team, we cry together on Thursdays ;)
Looking forward to see how you get on
Thank you sir! 🫡 it’s an honor to be here. I will try to reserve my crying for Thursdays

I have been resisting the urge to do this. So, glad to watch someone else's journey.
D.A.R.E. to say no to buying ridiculous amounts of server hardware 😂 Thank you so much for watching and following along!

Thank you I am definitely blessed when it comes to to tech gadgets.
Love it, keep the video's coming
Thanks for watching and supporting! It means a lot 🫡

FYI, SATA Drives can work on a SAS backplane, but SAS cannot work on SATA.
Thank you! After I recorded this video I educated myself on SAS drives quite a bit.

Nice haul, welcome to LAB LYFE!
.. I kinda like Jellyfin more than plex.. give it a shot, I/share-ees find the interface much nicer
Thank you for the warm welcome!

I don’t mind the server humming! I take naps in my chair next to the servers all the time lol.
And yes the shroud was put back on 😅
I see who beat me in the eBay listing.
I just brought a Z2 mini g2 performance, z240 sff and a Hp g4
Next imma buy a rack server
Were you scoping out the PowerEdge T430?!
And awesome purchase man! Excited to learn more about your build.
@@dleer_defi I was looking at a couple of different options; PowerEdges, Proliants, etc….
I hope you are setting the raid controller to pass through mode and then use zfs with proxmox or unraid

You should really consider a server room and rack-based kit.
ZFS is fine, but for Unraid, you don’t want RAID. Why do you think it’s called Unraid?
Yes, for TrueNAS this RAID controleris not a good choice. Any RAID controler with a battery is not a good choice if you want to use it with TrueNAS because the RAID controler is doing the RAID work, not TrueNAS... That's not a bad one, just not good for any NAS with software RAID.
@@frederichardy8844 I have the same controller, but I haven’t turned on RAID and just pass it through to TN and it managed the zRAID fine.
How is the power consumption ? I been thinking to buy a rack server

S.A.S. Drives do not work with S.A.T.A. backplanes but S.A.T.A. will work with SAS Backplanes.
Thanks for watching!!
those suck up power like cyclone. maybe thats why they were so cheap.
Probably!!! 😭
Your watching a movie while you walk?
Yea I stream movies or tv shows from my plex server while I take a walk sometimes
way too much stuff time to learn to minimize living
Not for the faint of heart… but a fun adventure for those who are technically inclined
