Monty Python knew exactly what they were doing, but they had a very valid point that it wasn't directly ridiculing Christianity - no Biblical figures were harmed in the production of the film. It was a satire, as you say, of people desperate to follow something for no reason. Palin & Cleese's debate with Malcolm Muggeridge and the Bishop of Southwark on Friday Night, Saturday Morning is definitely worth watching, particularly as it shows that Muggeridge and Bishop Mervyn Stockwood were taking offence to a film they hadn't actually watched, being outraged for the sake of being outraged. Christianity did not have a monopoly on crucifixion and Brian was never portrayed as Jesus - in fact it was made clear the character was definitively "not the Messiah!" and spent the whole film trying in vain to tell people he wasn't.
I think it's weird to say Life of Brian is not an attack on Christianity. Yes, but I'm not sure which you would drop. And so many others from Life of Brian, like what have the Roman's done for us? Or he's not the messier, he's a very naughty boy. Or even the miracle of the Juniper bushes.
@@stephenlee5929 I'd go with 'Jehovah!' (the stoning one) or 'Loretta' (I want to have babies) or 'Biggus Dickus' (the giggling soldiers) or... there's just so much in that movie.
Some websites that give you basic phrases in other languages now often include the translation to another language of the phrase "My hovercraft is full of eels" in homage to this sketch!
I once worked at a university, where we had a staff cafe. One day I was having lunch and - I don't remember how - one of the professors and I started quoting back and forth 'The Four Yorkshiremen' in our best attempts at Yorkshire accents (I'm Aussie, he's a Kiwi 😅) with additions from other staff members. It somehow morphed into reciting the Black Knight sketch. I ended up loaning him my Monty Python DVD box set so he could introduce it to his kids.
You have to remember that these men were all educated at Oxford or Cambridge universities. There's a book "Everything I Ever Needed to Know About _____* I Learned from Monty Python: *History, Art, Poetry, Communism, Philosophy, the Media, Birth, Death, ... Mythology, Fish Slapping, and Many More!".
Tyler you have no idea. You really need to watch the movie "the life of Brian". It's much more than a sketch, and when you wondered if people got offended... I spat my tea out lol. The church of England were outraged and there's an old tv debate with the python team and a cpl of bishops. Basically because the storyline of the movie parallels the life of Jesus. It's one of my favourite movies.
They have done 5 films including Holy Grail (1975), Life of Brian (1979), and The Meaning of Life (1983). Also they have about 15 films (many very good) which many individually have starred in and directed. Other notable sketches worth watching include Fish Slapping dance, Whicker Island, Upper Class twit of the year, Cheese Shop, bicycle repair man, the 4 Yorkshire men.....
And yes, Always Look on the Bright Side of Life was quite a big hit in a number of countries. The Lumberjack Song was also very popular and I remember all my school mates singing it at our all-male Catholic school, much to the chagrin of the non-ley teachers.
"My dog has no nose." "How does he smell?" Awful!!" I hope you get a chance to watch some of these gems in their entirety, without narration... best do it on an empty bladder. 😂
"The life of Brian" were banned in Norway. In Sweden, they of course used the tag line "So funny that they banned it in Norway" when they promoted the film.
I'm Canadian but I grew up on Monty Python and lots of British humor and surprisingly lots of British meals I know this because I watch both your channels and I find it amazing. And yes, it's time for you to watch more Monty Python. The music is generally written by Eric idle who was a friend of George Harrison and the movie Life of Brian wouldn't have not been made without George's help. They have more movies but do a reaction on Monty Python and the Holy Grail and the Life of Brian. A full episode of Monty Python's Flying Circus will change your life. Also more red green. Both are full of Timeless humor.👍👍🍻🇨🇦
Monty Python and the Holy Grail and The Life of Brian are both full length films rather than sketches. I would also recommend the film Jaberwocky (which will probably shock your quaint American sensibilities). All very much worth watching. Actually in MP and the Holy Grail I would recommend 'Build me a Shrubery' and the 'French Knights' above the Black Knight. You really need to watch the Dead Parrot all the way through and have a look at the Cheese Shop. For some more great British comedy have a look at the sketch 'Four Candles' by the two Ronnies. Enjoy!
The name is in full - "Monty Pythons Flying Circus". The sketch preceding the Lumberjack sketch is called the 'Spam' sketch by aficionados, and it is reportedly where the term 'spam' as in excess emails came from, as the early computer pioneers were Monty Python fans - you should watch it. The two sketches 'Spam' and 'Lumberjack' are really merged surreally into one. Yes, the Dead Parrot is number 1 of Mont Python's sketches, but you really need to see the whole sketch and where it leads to, as Monty Python often linked sketches together, another of their brilliant innovations. In many people's minds though the best ever British comedy sketch is the Two Ronnies in the '4 Candle' sketch, you need to see the whole thing though.
The Life of Brian is fabulous, easily up there with Blazing Saddles, Airplane and The Naked Gun as one of the best film comedies of all time. There is so much going on, from joining one of the many groups trying to get free from Roman rule, the transexual declaration, to the Stoning scene, painting protest slogans on the amphitheatre walls, the Roman Governors speech impediment, the crucifixion and the Bright Side of Life itself. Absolute classic. Ask any Brit over a certain age if Brian is the Messiah and you are guaranteed to get "He's not the Messiah, he's a naughty boy".
I'm from Canada and when I was in grade 9 back in the early 2000s during my geography class, my teacher didn't have a lesson planned or something for the class so she put on Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It was my first ever experience with Monty Python and it was hilarious! Lol
I love British comedy because, (as you said) the actors are so committed to the bit. It's always straight faced. When you think about comedy the best acts that stand the test of time are the ones that act completely serious, despite the absurd things happening around them. Examples include Monty Python of course, Leslie Nielsen in the Naked Gun series and Airplane!, Abbot and Costello, The Three Stooges, anything by Mel Brooks, etc. Playing through an absolutely absurd idea, completely straight, Is somehow a lot funnier than an actor or character being goofy. For example, I love them both, But Jim Carrey gets beat by Leslie Nielsen every time. Jim Carrey leans into the ridiculous and it's hilarious but... Leslie Nielsen Ignores the silliness and stupidity and performs as a normal person, even though the situation is completely ridiculous which makes it so much more funny to watch. I hope that made even a little bit of sense.
Great to see you enjoy a few clips from Monty Python Tyler. The Python crew were, and the surviving ones still are, absolute legends. Would love to see you react to The Two Ronnies four candles sketch.
The funniest part of the lot was the fact that someone had gone to the effort of explaining them all for their American audience. Watch all the Python movies, watch all the skits on you-tube and you'll realise that they are all the funniest joke in the world. Trying to rank one Monty Python sketch or scene above another is an exercise in futility IMO, they're pretty much all bloody awesome.
Try finding a clip where Michael Palin and John Cleese are on a panel with two clerics, discussing "Life of Brian". The clerics were totally up in arms, one even going so far as to call the movie "blasphemous". Cleese and Palin had a very hard time not visibly rolling their eyes. (Btw, my favorite scene is where Brian, as a member of a Jewish resistance group, is writing graffiti in Latin on a wall in Jerusalem -- "Romans, Go Home". He's caught by a Roman soldier and is quaking in his sandals, but all the soldier does is berate him for getting the grammar wrong ... and makes him write the sentence correctly 100 times. Absolutely classic!) Oh, and do yourself a favor and watch the whole movie (if you can laugh a little at religion). You won't regret it, promise! :-)
The fact they missed so many that could deservedly be top ten. The witch (holy grail) Biggus dickuss (life of brian) Stoning scene (life of Brian) Four Yorkshiremen (hollywood bowl) Fish slapping (flying circus)
The "Fish Slapping Dance" is about 30 seconds long and my favourite after the Argument sketch. I purchased the complete scripts of the "Holy Grail" film. All the members contributed several sketches to be included in the film. One that wasn't chosen was thus... King Arthur and his knights from Camelot were gathered on a windswept moor and King Arthur in a 3 minute speech told his knights that they had this quest from God to find the "Holy Grail". He then sent his Knights out to all directions of the globe on this quest. After about 10 yards, one of his knights shouts, " Found it"! So they all go home again. - Brilliant.
Hi Tyler, loving the vids. Am enjoying your reactions to British culture. I'm an Englishman living in Ireland. You need to watch the movies Life of Brian & Holy Grail, 2 classics. Also the meaning of life is good. Its amazing that these are fifty years old.
Upper class twit is my favourite of theirs but soooo many of their sketches are gold. I also love Rowan Atkins Black Adder especially the 2nd season with Queen Elizabeth and a little bit of fry and Laurie especially the bar scene where Laurie complaining about his ex wife and fry as bartender keeps offering him different dishes.
hello Tyler, I've watched many of your reactions, I think it's great that you appreciate our (English) humour. I think you would really have some great laughs doing some deep dives into some full episodes/series of lots of our old tv and films. Keep reacting dude...
The film Life of Brian caused great controversy at the time it was released, from people who hadn't seen it. It is now regarded as the funniest film ever made. My friend can quote every line from it.
You might like watching Monty Python at the Hollywood Bowl? It was a live show and clearly appealed to the american audience. They performed some of their favourite sketches.
I know we all have our favorites, especially when there's 100 jokes to choose from, but i wan't to see at least these: -Bicycle repairman -Cheese shop sketch -Fairy Tale
Legendary stuff. While it's all subjective, my personal favourite wasn't on the list. The Philosophers football final, Germany v Greece is I think pure genius on all sorts of levels. And no arguments....
PYTHON is pronounced PY THUN ,as in GUN, not PY THON as in GONE. Listen to how the narrator says it. " He's NOT the Messiah...he's a very naughty boy". Classic Life of Brian quote. Connie Booth was John Cleese's wife. They went on to star in another classic British comedy, FAWLTY TOWERS where he does his silly walk in an episode called THE GERMANS. " You're mother was a hamster, and your father smelled of elderberries" . Classic HOLY GRAIL quote. When something dies, I still say, " this is an ex....". You have to watch the sketches in their entirety to get the joke. Only parts of them were shown here.
The parrot sketch probably works so well in the UK because of the long history of verbal comedy, which, combined with lot of sly innuendo, was already to be heard in Shakespeare's comedies, although, admittedly, these sometimes need a glossary to interpret the contemporary references and slang words. This anarchic comedy seems to be the obverse side of the "keep calm and carry on side" of the British temperament. The British and Irish, with their huge vocabulary, do on the whole take a delight in elaborate banter, punning and flights of verbal fancy. The whole premise of the parrot sketch is John Cleese's finding more and more words to describe its moribund condition, in the face of Michael Palin's decision to ignore it. In addition, the Python's use any number of exaggerated and distorted British dialects which turns the silliness up a few more notches.😂
Yup. I think that's really the root of British comedy; depth and complexity. American humor, at least modern American humor, revels in and relies on shallowness and simplicity. People are obsessed with the mentality of "it's not that deep". They don't want to put effort into understanding _anything,_ least of all their recreation and entertainment. By contrast, British humor dives in and just sees how deep they can dive. It's a competition to see how many people they can lose on the way. It's all about applying their understanding of linguistics and wordplay in such a way that it filters the people who get the joke from those who don't. And Monty Python are certainly a bunch of cunning linguists.
The parrot sketch is comedy genius. An incredibly simple premise... how many euphemisms for death can we crowbar into a three minute scene? Result: Three minutes of non-stop laughter.
Tyler, growing up in the 70's in Canada, we watched Monty Python 's Flying Circus every Saturday afternoon on the CBC. My children grew up in the late 90's early 2000's and they too are very well versed in Monty Python. So happy that you have discovered them. Merry Christmas to you and your family from Montreal!
There is a tradition in British comedy of making parody songs one of my favourites was “the chicken song” by spitting image which parodies summer holiday songs which have actions. Or “no more Christmas singles” which was a xmas song about banning xmas pop songs.
One thing I have never seen mentioned is that when these were first broadcast, they would often have false endings. The closing credits and music would start to play, people would go to switch off or change channels, but it would start up again. and sometimes it would not and a sign would come up saying , "Bugger off" ! I did read that they also wanted to do an entire episode where the volume of the sound would be slowly turned down during the episode so that the viewers would have to keep turning up the volume. Near the end of the show, full volume would be restored! The BBC nixed this idea , fearing millions of complaints of blown TV speakers. This was in one of their books!
The first thing to know about Python is how to say "python". The second thing is to watch it in full and appreciate it, not to keep stopping it and cutting bits off.
Yes.. Americans always say "pyTHON" instead of PYthon. It's annoying and links to...but then I already told my daughter last night that "if I could go back in Time, I'd visit Merriam Webster before he made his big mistake and slap his face" !! 😏 because _he_ wanted to change English to American, and ever since he rewrote the dictionary, Americans🇺🇸 _mispronounce_ and _misspell_ English🏴 and it is soooooo fducking irritating, 😢 that I'm spurred on to commit the (apparent) sin of "commentary aggro"!! 😮😊😅😂🏴😳🇬🇧🙂❤️🖖
@user-kq5ke5yb6k dude, look at the time it was written - Islam wasn't really in the public consciousness then, certainly not like it is now. Kind of like blaming MP for not doing sketches about Gen Z.
We had a great latin teacher in high school who made us watch "Life of Brian" because there's a scene where the roman soldiers correct some graffiti written in latin with incorrect grammar. We watched the whole movie of cause for that perhaps 1 minute long scene... 🤣
The full monty python set of films and series is hilarious. I grew up with this stuff and life of Brian is probably the most famous film but equally all were way ahead of there time as in the UK at the time there wasn't a boundary that these guys would not push.
An interesting fact about the Black Knight sketch, when the knight is down to only one leg, they actually hired a one legged man to play him (a local man apparently) so he really does have one leg. Apparently this was done b/c Cleese, who plays the Knight in the rest of the scene (when two legged and no legged) just couldn't balance well on one leg.
Terry Pratchett had always look on the bright side of life played at his funeral and I won't lie, it was very moving. Such an important and wonderful take on death.
The Cast of Monty Python were all HIGHLY EDUCATED Individuals which made their humour Far Better than anything American or anywhere else. The True Genius of Comedy is achieved thru this Premise
Look up the "Not the Nine O'clock News" sketch "The General Synod's Life of Christ"... "Whenever two or three are gathered together then they shall perform the Parrot Sketch".
They do one about the Black Plague and yell out “bring out your dead” to collect bodies on passing cart. Anytime my brothers family get sick I say “bring out your dead” because it’s a house of plague and we both laugh. English humour is very different to American because the Brit’s can laugh at themselves. Often I find American humour very forced or slapstick which I don’t find funny. I’m from New Zealand and we have a lot of British tv and films here. Another favourite is the sketch where a rather large man goes to restaurant and pretty much eats everything on the menu and had to keep vomiting to be able to eat more. The waiter (John Cleese) talks him into an after dinner mint biscuit and he explodes. We often reference this when someone is feeling full.
"He's not the messiah, he's a very naughty boy" - Brian's mum.
You can only appreciate the sketches by watching them fully with no interruptions whatsoever.

Ah, Ireland. You were a bit silly back then. :)
I love" the life of Brian"
'Every sperm is sacred' is an excellent tune and beautifully choreographed. It is actually one of the best-performed dance routines I've seen.
How the Frenchman from the Holy Grail wasn't on this list is beyond me 😂
Yes, but I'm not sure which you would drop.
And so many others from Life of Brian, like what have the Roman's done for us?
Or he's not the messier, he's a very naughty boy.
Or even the miracle of the Juniper bushes.
@@stephenlee5929 Messiah FFS. With you on the juniper bushes.
I fart in your general direction
@@stephenlee5929 I'd go with 'Jehovah!' (the stoning one) or 'Loretta' (I want to have babies) or 'Biggus Dickus' (the giggling soldiers) or... there's just so much in that movie.
Two words Tyler, …”Mister Creosote”…best Python Sketch by far!
"He's not the messiah. He's a very naughty boy"
Some websites that give you basic phrases in other languages now often include the translation to another language of the phrase "My hovercraft is full of eels" in homage to this sketch!
Duolingo uses it for several languages.
@@NauiByeolEge Omniglot, too.
"Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life" actually went to number 3 on the british singles chart in 1991.
Look at Only fools and horses, particularly Del falling through the bar. No matter how many times I watch it, I still laugh
"Monty Python and the Holy Grail" and "Life of Brian" were full length feature films made by the Python team.
Monty Python are the Beatles of comedy!! SO brilliant! They will live forever!
And the comedy programme 'Not the nine o'clock news' did a wonderful spoof about all the hoohah.
You really need to watch the full sketches, ESPECIALLY the Dead Parrot -- so many immortal lines!
Venezuelan Beaver Cheese 🤣
Don't forget he Bruces.
Yes both Cleese and Palin were in A Fish Called Wanda
And yes, Always Look on the Bright Side of Life was quite a big hit in a number of countries. The Lumberjack Song was also very popular and I remember all my school mates singing it at our all-male Catholic school, much to the chagrin of the non-ley teachers.
Three out of the last four funerals in my family have played "Always Look On The Bright Side of Life" at some point
They are Legendary. Even after 50 years, i still laugh my pants out... as i am right now 😂😂😂😂
"My dog has no nose."
"How does he smell?"
Awful!!"
I hope you get a chance to watch some of these gems in their entirety, without narration... best do it on an empty bladder. 😂
"Life's a piece of shit
When you look at it
Life's a laugh
and death's a joke, it's true 🎵
"LIFES A PILE 'O SHIT
...WHEN YA LOOK AT IT" 😂
"The life of Brian" were banned in Norway. In Sweden, they of course used the tag line "So funny that they banned it in Norway" when they promoted the film.
no doubt to further the prejudices among swedes that norwegians are less intelligent than swedes.
A true Pythonite! Have you had a chance to see Spamalot? Also brilliant!
From Life of Brian: [Demagogue screaming to the crowd] "We're all individuals!" [Someone] "I'm not."
That always cracks me up. Simply brilliant.
Enjoy!
Don't forget the Rabbit of Cairbannoch scene 🤣
There are 3 Monty Python movies, they all need to be seen!
Biggus Dickus is number 1 for me
The irony of an American saying "I missed the boat on this one", when referring to British culture.... ever heard of the Mayflower? :P
No they haven't
I live near Harwich and mention it to many American youtubers at thanksgiving, and they have no idea what I'm on about 😂
@@101steel4l sank ít !
All cons...........
I'm from Canada and when I was in grade 9 back in the early 2000s during my geography class, my teacher didn't have a lesson planned or something for the class so she put on Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It was my first ever experience with Monty Python and it was hilarious! Lol
That is very much NOT a film for kids lmao!
You have to see the Not The Nine O'clock News debate on the Life of Brain
"Sit on my face and tell me that you love me" was a popular Python song too.
The fact they missed so many that could deservedly be top ten.
The witch (holy grail)
Biggus dickuss (life of brian)
Stoning scene (life of Brian)
Four Yorkshiremen (hollywood bowl)
Fish slapping (flying circus)
On a visit to North Korea, Michael Palin showed it to schoolchildren who fell about.Timeless silliness.
Now review "The Rutles". A decades long parody of the Beatles.
Hi Tyler, loving the vids. Am enjoying your reactions to British culture. I'm an Englishman living in Ireland. You need to watch the movies Life of Brian & Holy Grail, 2 classics. Also the meaning of life is good. Its amazing that these are fifty years old.
You should enjoy is reaction to Canada & Japan channels
I want to be a woman (Stan wants to become Loretta) sketch is so relevant.
Can I say your anericiannes shines through.
"What have the Romans ever done for us? " is probably my favourite
The film Life of Brian caused great controversy at the time it was released, from people who hadn't seen it. It is now regarded as the funniest film ever made. My friend can quote every line from it.
Somehow the controversy was in itself very Pythonesque, late night religious shows with Bishops and Malcom Muggeridge condemning it.
You might like watching Monty Python at the Hollywood Bowl? It was a live show and clearly appealed to the american audience. They performed some of their favourite sketches.
I know we all have our favorites, especially when there's 100 jokes to choose from, but i wan't to see at least these:
-Bicycle repairman
-Cheese shop sketch
-Fairy Tale
Bicycle repairman! Brilliant premise and so often overlooked!
Legendary stuff.
While it's all subjective, my personal favourite wasn't on the list. The Philosophers football final, Germany v Greece is I think pure genius on all sorts of levels.
And no arguments....
"Always look on the bright side of life" is one of the most requested songs to be played at funerals here in the UK.
Hearing Americans say PY THON like GONE makes me want to super aggressively tear pages out of a dictionary 😑
Don't mention the war!
Life of Brian is the funniest film ever 🤣 😂
I think the French Knights hurling insults etc at Arthur should have been included. Cracks me up every time
British comedy is often based on words. It can fall flat but, well done, it’s hilarious. US comedy is closer to slapstick & Aussies love them both.
The parrot sketch probably works so well in the UK because of the long history of verbal comedy, which, combined with lot of sly innuendo, was already to be heard in Shakespeare's comedies, although, admittedly, these sometimes need a glossary to interpret the contemporary references and slang words. This anarchic comedy seems to be the
obverse side of the "keep calm and carry on side" of the British temperament. The British and Irish, with their huge vocabulary, do on the whole take a delight in
elaborate banter, punning and flights of verbal fancy. The whole premise of the parrot sketch is John Cleese's finding more and more words to describe its moribund condition, in the face of
Michael Palin's decision to ignore it.
Now you need to see the Goons ~ 15 years before the Pythons, very strange also !!😅
'What did the Romans ever do for us' should have made the list
My favourite is the slapping with a fish dance!
The full “Funniest Joke” sketch is beyond belief.
Life of Brian wasn't specifically poking fun at Christianity. It was poking fun at anyone who can't think for themselves
So yes it wouldn't be popular amongst the very Christian parts of the US. 🤔
We're all individuals...
@@jiggely_spearsI'm not.
I don't recall any sketches including people or images of a the Muslim prophet. Very brave, MP was -- not.
That the "Stoning" from Life of Brian isn't even on the list, is a disgrace.
The one that makes me laugh out loud uncontrollably is probably their shortest sketch ever; the Fish Slapping Dance
As an Australian, one of my very favourite Python sketches is the Bruce sketch, particularly when it culminates in the Philosophers Song
Mind you, Monty Python are in a class of their own.
The full monty python set of films and series is hilarious. I grew up with this stuff and life of Brian is probably the most famous film but equally all were way ahead of there time as in the UK at the time there wasn't a boundary that these guys would not push.
I love the fact you get it . Many Americans don't .
"It is an ex-parrot."
"It has ceased to be."
Mr Creosote!(The exploding man) Love your sense of humour, also.🇬🇧
For strange UK comedy you need to check out The goodies, Trev and Simon, Harry Hill, Tommy Cooper. All works of genius.
"T'is but a scratch!" 😅
😊😅😂Await Tyler's opinion on the Roman called 'Biggus Dickus' 😊😅😂
I know this is not a movie react channel (yet...). But if you did reactions to Monty Pythons' movies, we'd have a great time together 😁
You REALLY should watch this film “Life of Brian”.
If you enjoy this snippet you’ll definitely like the movie it’s hilarious.
