Can't believe this song is 20 years old this year and still so relevant
Unfortunately yes, it still is relevant. That's because the people who could do something about it never did. Instead of trying to help these kids, they blamed guns, drugs, video games... anything but the actual issue itself. Because it's useful for politicians when people suffer, cause you can promise things to suffering people in exchange for votes.
That's so crazy it's been that long ago time is seriously flying by!
IT will always be!
Every Day. 😵💫
This song is timeless. Incredible.
I was a senior when Columbine happened. This song was so needed at the time. Spoke some so much truth. And it still holds up now. Sadly
Me too. Right after it happened we had a rumor going around something was going to happen at our school. 3/4 of the students didn't show up that day.
I remember Columbine… some sad shiiiiit
@@Buugzy is that in picture is real suicide peoples?
Ah, that brings me back memories.
How about it
Hello :)
Facts🍻
No bullshit
The opening is just as epic as it was back when I first heard it
Payable on Death! You might be surprised to know they are a Christian metal band. They've been around a long time. They speak facts with killer drums, strong bass line, & Sonny always has unique vocals.
Your everywhere. Lol
@@KazuhasKatana Hey friend! You're right! 🤣 Music has always been my passion & I love seeing people discover it. 💕
I sure didn't know that
@@jennhurl glad to have you around.
@@Ozzy_2014 Thank you! 😊
This song still gives me chills. Another great song from them is Alive!
I can't believe I forgot about this song. This came out in my early 20s. I'm now in my 40s and this song still resonates deeply with me. This is one of those songs that makes me turn my radio up, man. If you liked this one, check out "Alive" by P.O.D.
Is that picture is a real suicide peoples?
Other great hits by POD are Sattelite and Alive.
also "Will you" and "Goodbye for now"
and Beautiful!!!
Yes! Alive video and song are so good and powerful message!
I remember listening to alive in the first day I went back to school after a year out due to clinical depression. Song holds a very powerful memory inside it for me as it was probably the first time I’d ever felt any sense of happiness and normality in months
Hidden song no one really knows about is sleeping awake check it out
POD belongs in that period to the nu metal genre as Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park or Korn.
Yup all nostalgia
Highschool
Indeed
POD and Sevendust, both amazing and underrated bands.
I haven’t heard that song in a really long time. I forgot about this song.
I was in high school when this song came out. I remember when Columbine happened it shook me to my core. It was a defining moment of my youth. This song perfectly encapsulates how it felt at that time.
Me too. I was a clean-cut kid, but had a Marilyn Manson poster on my door. My mom ripped it off cause she thought it would influence me after Columbine.
I was in 9th grade when that happened.
@@stewrobb2329 Same here.
#ErinAllen
*Columbine* was in *99* & sticks out but this song is actually inspired by the *2001* shooting at *Santana* high School in *Cali*
@@dmloy1018 M.Manson Is just not good. Not musically, nor otherwise. My 2 cents.
Thanks for reminding us of this BRILLIANT song! ... timeless.
You got it, Jay. That's what the song is about!
Such a powerful song... Thanks for reacting to this one!!!!
Also, any time the Choir comes in with the chorus of "We are, we are The youth of the nation" it gives me chills.
This song still brings me to tears. We have been crying out for help for decades, and have gone unheard. Now our children are suffering. I grew up being raised by parents who grew up socially conscious in the 70’s and THEY have been crying out for change. When will we all start listening and break the cycles? Our children now have to fight so hard for change, and they are hitting walls of hate and anger. It’s not helping anyone...
Sorry guys, this one just hit me hard. As a mother of four, two of them just hitting the world on their own, it’s hard to see them struggle. Even with all that we have taught them and prepared them for. We had caught and hoped for a better world to send them off into, and it’s disappointing to see what world they have emerged into as they first spread their wings. But....we fight on. It’s all we can do.
YESSSS!! I'm so glad you decided to feature P.O.D.!! This is my second favorite song of theirs. Love this band.
I am one of the people who recommended them - but I said the song "Alive" - this is a great song, too though!! :D
This song still gets to me, 20 years later!
POD Payable On Death. A hard-core Christian band from Cali 🙏
Listen to Enoch Christian metal band from new Zealand
Honestly had no idea they wer a christian band..makes sense but... hozier are the same n both are lyrically quite potent..
Niva knew that though... thanks for the info ma man
Living in San Diego 1999-2005, this was one of the hot local bands that played all the bars. Their song Alive is awesome too. Even more poignant after the school shooting in El Cajon in 2001.
Totally off the subject.. so you were there when they filmed THE REAL WORLD
It was actually in Santee. I was in 3rd grade when the shorting happened. Even though the high school was on the other side of town all the schools were shutdown. Very scary. I remember it so vividly.
I know you're gonna love this song before it starts. Deep meanings and sad😓. They wrote this about a school shooting they heard about nearby just before Columbine happened. If memory serves me correctly those pictures are of the Columbine casualties.
It happened while they were recording this album... they heard sirens goin by and heard about a school shooting and wrote the song in response to it
The shooting took place 2 years after Columbine, student opened fire on Santana High School in March 2001 and P.O.D.'s rehearsal studio was 2 blocks away so they saw emergency vehicles rush past without realizing what was going on. They were touring Colorado around the time Columbine happened and when they saw the Santana shooting on the news, they began writing the track. The pictures are of casualties not just from Columbine, but all school shootings from 1999 to 2001.
The youth of a nation is more about the mental health problems with children. This is the extended story of the late 90's and early 00's trying to survive in a world that told us to shut up and suck it up.
Sadly, most are still messed up and in need of help. We need to look and listen to each other and our children so we don't pass down our mental problems.
That was a global thing at that time, a band in my country around the same time this came out made a song about the " broken children of the our nation". We like to romanticized the 90's but hard drugs were so common that everyone knew at least one addict.
well said
Part of the problem with school shootings over the last two decades is that some kids have no sense or understanding of history.
It’s almost as if whatever problems they’re facing is the absolute worst and can’t see their problems in any context, leading them to act out.
Yes they have problems as does any generation but maybe it’s because I was a history nerd growing up but I feel that any middle/upperclass kid growing up in the 80’s/90’s has had a fairly good life in comparison to generations that came before.
If they’re able to put their issues in context then being rejected by the girl you like or a social group isn’t the end of the world as it may seem.
Nowadays we do such a poor job of preparing kids for the real world when they get a dose of the real world it’s almost a psychological breakdown.
@@LadyNikitaShark There were definitely less opiate addicts in the 90s than the aughts or 2010s.
The "shut up and suck it up" philosophy existed way before the 90's. The 90's was the start of the "ten point" grading scale, participation trophies, "red ink is bad" and "everyone is special" philosophy. I was 15 when Columbine happened. I remember Maury Povich's "Look at me now" episodes.
I remember this during a time of hard drug use, when I was 19. I'm 39 this month, and I remember this song for how many times its relevant still, to this day. We gotta stand up, and stop the hate ourselves. We gotta do this throwing arms around shoulders and walking together, not fighting, not destroying. Not running. We must stand and walk, one and all, for one and all.
The Drum kick is Pure Juggernaut Sound!!
Lyrics are Deadly Poetic!!
This Song is beautiful ❤️.

Southtown too
P.O.D - Alive for sure is up there!
In 2001/2002 this song was everywhere. Still one of my favorite bands. Some older banger Southtown or Rock the party.
There was shooting today in the USA at a High School. Praying for everyone who was there and their families. 🙏🏽
What's up with USA and school shooting??
One of the times that I saw P.O.D. in concert they brought some little kids from the audience on stage to help them sing that part.
It is a powerful song & very easy to listen to. Great reaction!

They had a really good video of them playing to a small room. Maybe acoustic? He might like the contrast.
All great choices!,
Kings of Leon has a lot of good songs!!! Super Soaker!!!!!!!!
This style is called nu metal, hope you react to more P.O.D.! Alive, Satellite, Goodbye For Now, Ridiculous, Strength of My Life...
So underrated til this day.
Song gives me chills still
it has a dark vibe, but the lyrics are so real its scary.
I love watching people react to this music I love so much and listened to growing up
This whole album still slaps hard. What a strong message this sent. Very powerful.
Powerful song, thanks for reacting to it❤
These guys are from my home town. San Diego.
I met the mother of one of the members by chance
and became friends. They were unknown at the time.
Have you done Jeremy by Pearl Jam? It has a similar subject, though it's about one kid.
I know you did Runaway Train, which is closer to the mark.
90s had music that was about something.
"Jeremy" is a great Pearl Jam song. I'm pretty sure Jay reacted to "Black" MTV Unplugged but I don't believe he has hit on "Even Flow" yet either. Two great Pearl Jam songs for sure!
"Jeremy" came to mind when watching this. I remember they used to play the video for "Runaway Train" on MTV a lot and it always made me cry :( I felt so bad for those kids
The first Pearl Jam song that got me was Last Kiss. I was only a kid but that song just hit different for me.
One of those bangers that's so sad, but the beat is so good....
Whew! This song made me think back then. It does the same for me now.
This song is so strong! I knew it a long time ago, but i hear it today, as it was my first time
I got into them in middle school, bc they were “Christian” my mom never questioned the lyrics (she thought they were talking about god, not about real issues). Thank goodness bc I’m now a huge advocate for social justice/gun reform/mental health.
Jesus was NOT a social justice warrior. He requires us to take up the sword. "Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, he eats for life." (Paraphrased) = self responsibility.
Social justice is a hoax! YOU want something in this life, than work for it. No one owes nothing to no one else. You CANNOT MAKE people think, feel and act the same nor punish them when they don't. That's NOT justice for ANYONE, that's REAL Fascism.
btw, come take my guns!! Don't worry, just like through out history, sorry fucks like you will be saved by US and you'll still be the insufferable ingrates you are but, you'll be alive.
@@cup_cuppy_cuppers5817 you good?
I forgot all about this song until a month or so ago and now I can't help but listen to it
Still one of my favorite bands and songs. You should check out their song Alive. P.O.D (payable on death) they are a Christian band.
Powerful song. Gotta love P.O.D.
wow I used to listen to the song and I had no idea what it was about. Back then my English wasn't good enough to understand it. It really hits you when after all those years you realize what a song is really about.
enjoy you watching these music videos glad you enjoy them it is guys like you that will set a good future be safe God bless
I think I was in middle school or elementary, when my uncle complimented me for listening to this song! I didn’t know he also liked it
Love this one 💖
Great reaction man, truly some all time great lyrics in this song.
The song was inspired by the Santana High School shooting on March 5th, 2001. The band was doing rehearsals at a place a few blocks away from the high school and noticed emergency vehicles flying by while on a break. After finding out it was a school shooting, they started writing the song.
Those were school portraits of school shooting victims, by the way, in certain shots of the video.
Quote From Wiki "We were rehearsing and writing Satellite a couple of blocks away from the school. One day on the way to the studio, there were all these helicopters and cars speeding by. We really didn’t know what was going on. When we got to the studio, this guy had the news on, and he was like, ‘This kid just went and started blasting fools.’ So we started jamming, and that rhythm just naturally came out, then Wuv [Bernardo, drummer] put that drumbeat on it, and the song was born."
Another good song from this era is “The Red” by Chevelle.
Another song about similar topics (but completely different genre) that came out in this era was "Stole" by Kelly Rowland.
This sing brings me to tears to this day
****PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE watch Sarah Ikumu sing
"And I am Telling You" on the Britains Got Talent show. This girl was FIFTEEN when she sang it and if that's not a young Aretha Franklin I dont know who is! This young woman was MAGNIFICENT! I remember whooping with delight as she hit that final note the first time I saw it. They doubted her and she SMASHED IT!!!!****

POD'S Satellite was such a successful album....bought it right when it was released back in 2001.....The Nu-Metal era was a special time in my life
So for you Jay, the context behind this song is very powerful. P.O.D. Was recording at a studio in Santee, California and right down the street was Santee High School and that day when they were recording. Someone at Santee High School committed a school shooting. They ran outside to go check what was going on, they knew right there that they were scrapping the entire project and starting over. They came up with Youth Of The Nation in response and out of respect for that day.
"Stole" by Kelly Rowland is a song that always comes to my mind when I listen to this...
You should check out “alive“ from P.O.D.
The official video to "Alive" is awsome. The car crash happening around the band in slow motion is very cool.
I just asked you to do this in another video, but I see you already did lol. I listened to this song in middle school, and still today I’m 29 now 😩 I miss how music used to be and it made sense. I also believe that the pictures in the background are ones who passed away
Last few mins of this clip is actually amazing..like the kids themselves are saying..no!!! No more.. how powerful a message must one send?
I'm a fan from Scotland...this artist is a Italian Scottish.. He's so talented I have so much respect for him and his family...XX
WOW!! BRILLIANT and DEVASTATING at the same time...
The story goes that the band was working on a music video and while taking a break, they heard the sirens and commotion going on not far from them and found out it was a school shooting that had just happened. They immediately went to work on making this song after that to try to use their “platform” to speak out on things that aren’t right that we’re going on then and unfortunately are still going on today.
This was my era I cry 😭 everytime I hear this song
I remember walking home from school in 3rd / 4th grade with my walkman listening to this whole album💯 this was all time favorite for a lot of people. I still have my CD signed by them.
Didn't even have to watch the video before I liked. Fantastic song.
These guys are awesome live!
A slapping song back in the day 🤘🏽🔥
POD is a Christian band (Saw them at HeavenFest..along with Skilett and Red..) AMAZING in Concert. Sonny the lead singer is part of the Whosoevers..along with Brian head from Korn.. POD stands for Payable On Death " The band chose this name to be a direct tie in with the Christian theology that explains that since Jesus died on the Cross, Christians' debts to God have been paid for; in other words all believers, in their acceptance that Jesus was sacrificed for them on God's behalf, have inherited eternal life"
As the father of a 17 year old son who committed suicide 11/17/1999 along with his best friend 6 months later, this song really hit home when it came out. To this day this group and it's music holds a special place in my heart.
They are from San Diego. This song hits home for me. I was in 3rd grade when the high school shooting happened in my hometown. We were in full lockdown when the shooting happened. I was able to see them perform this song about 5 years ago and it was an emotional performance, beautiful performance.
I saw P.O.D. play live in concert in 2019 - it was such an excellent live gig and they played the whole "Satellite" album plus heaps of other tracks \m/
Sadly this song resonates even today
and forever
Such a great song.
Isn't music the most potent gift humans has? Amazing..
It's a beautiful thing when an artist or musician can put their finger on a difficult or ugly societal problem. And it's a shame but for a few, nobody really hears the message and so the problem goes on. This is one of the best songs of that generation; powerful, evocative and accurate.
Powerful song

Jayvee!! OMG I just was listening to this masterpiece I used to listen to ..Emeli Sandé - Hurts... its so underrated and i know for a fact you would love this
The lyrics are dope, but the music in this song is complete genius!!!
This reminds me of my concert days, they were awesome live, I used to live for rock shows, lost count after 100.
this song is hypnotic
I will always get chills with this song. I heard it for the first time at a concert after pipe bombs were found in my high school.
It's been going on for a while. My best friend took his life in 95. I never got over it.
Love how you join in the choir, haha
This song was so hard on me when I was a teenager. I felt so connected to this song because I was really depressed and felt exactly like these kids.
Awesome song
I seen them perform this live in 2003 i think. Fun times
great video bro!
Reminds me of "Kids In America" Kim Wilde, 1981.
i am a chocolate man in my mid 30's. this track is for young ppl to shine
I'm really enjoying your reactions. You're really different because you feel the music and pay attention to instrumentation. I'd really love to watch a rection of Portishead, any song, but specially the live ones at Roseland Ballroom. Keep the good work! Stay safe!
