7:25 That was Joel Hochberg, who passed away this April aged 87. He did quite a bit for Rare, including bringing over the Famicom from Japan to Rare’s HQ and showing it off for the first time.

He said...knowing full well that we love him and his sleep-deprived ramblings
Editor Dylan is easily one of the best things in these videos lol. I don't know what he's paid, but it's not enough lol.
I beg to differ. He tries way too hard to be funny and falls flat every time.
@@jonbourgoin182I disagree with you
Agreed. He’s a great addition!!
Yeah, Jared is good but Dylan is great!
Ok, Dylan, get back to work and stop trying to get a raise.
I suppose it's poetic justice...3 battletoads released in the same week -biff
I feel like Dylan went insane in this episode.
In THIS episode!??!
I haven’t watched yet and this comment has me hyped
I liked Dylan better when he didn't try too hard to be funny
Now having watched I can confidently confirm the validity of this comment
I mean, this week was full of identical games or games from the same franchise. Dude wanted a bit of variety to talk about even if it lead to crud.
I just wanna chime in to say that hearing the usual Now in the 90s music during the Nintendo Direct the other day really made just think about Nit90s
Its been showing up in lots of RUclips videos as well lol.
Yeah, that threw me off for a second. I got behind on Now In The 90s so I couldn't remember where I had heard it for a while.
When do they play it?
I forget exactly when, but why don't you just watch it? It's only like 40 minutes and it's, you know, a Direct, so it's good.
Shovel Knight’s duel with the Battletoads was best crossover they ever had
Never heard of it
I had no idea there was more than one battletoads, let alone 3
Dylan killed it this week. His sections are legitimately so well written and funny. They've been getting so solid the last couple months but he knocked OUT this week.
Kind of a missed opportunity that Battlemaniacs wasn't 3-player co-op, especially given a certain Square action RPG we're due to see in two months.
So let's see, we had three battletoads games, two games with double dragon in them, two games of Jeopardy, and if you count one of them you have two games based on football. Dylan: this is the groundhog's Day episode of Now the 90s. Quick! Do something to win over the heart of Andie McDowell or you're never going to get out of here.
Battletoads was one of those games you kind of wish had a crossover with the TMNT. It would have been cool.
They sort of did with those frog characters they got in the original animated series
The one stelar aspect that both, Battletoads in Battlemaniacs and Battletoads and Double Dragon, have in common isbthe amazing soundtrack *chef kiss*
I still remember when Death Battle, back when they were known as ScrewAttack, held a sort of contest to see who could be Battletoads in one playthrough legit. No save states, no cheats, no nothing.
And someone did.
And we all felt emasculated from it.
Edit: I think I found who done it, and I think it's thatsnoglitch on RUclips(feel free to correct me on that) and they did it using the PAL version of the game, meaning the game wasn't as responsive as it should be. That's freaking amazing.
Editor Dylan knocking it out of the park as always, absolutely hilarious!
AGREED!!😂😂👍
If Dylan was this crazy when hearing Battletoads for the 50th time imagine all those poor Gamestop employees answering phone calls of people asking if they've had a new game of them.
GameStop didn’t exist in 1993. Maybe you mean KayBee Toys or Toys R Us, or Children’s Palace, Circuit City or K-Mart…and now I’ve made myself feel extra old 😅🤷🏾♂️👴🏾
@@aztn19 there was a prank trend a few years back where people would call gamestop and ask them if they had the new battletoads - exclusively for the trolling
Ugh, I can imagine one of those moms that doesn't know shit asking if they have "that Battletoads game" and the employee having to ask "for which console, ma'am?", only for the mom to answer "I dunno, for the Nintendo". Which doesn't reduce it much when there were games for every Nintendo platform.
@@murdockberk8888 "A few years back" that was like, over a decade ago
@@aztn19 the first Gamestop prototype store actually did open in 1993 with a working custom oversized SNES controller for the Star Fox launch....and the company actually had already been around for a decade at that point, known as 'Babbages'.....around 2000 they changed 99% of the Babbages stores to the Gamestop name
Another week going back in time thanks Jared and Dylan for your work
The Battletoads & Double Dragon intro song has no right to go as hard as it does, especially the SNES version.
Overall, learned some new things and really enjoyed this episode of Now in The Battletoads.
It's a slapbop that hits different no cap
When I was a young kid, we took a vacation trip to California. I was given money by my grandparents to get something to remember the trip by. I remember walking into a game store and it had a wall of games and for some reason, a game I had never seen before stuck out to me. I used my money that day to buy Battletoads and never once regretted it. I recall my dad said not to tell my grandparents exactly what I spent my money on, so they never found out, but I still remember that trip to this day.
Nintendo used the Now in the 90's song (which I believe belongs to something else) in their most recent Direct and my mind almost fried trying to figure out where I heard that tune before lol
It was so surreal.
I'm glad someone else noticed that!
I understand why ProJared would use that one, it has that chill 90s TGIF feel _and_ uses a chiptune soundfont.
I'm so glad you said something, I heard it during the direct but couldn't connect the dots. Granted I'd already forgotten about it, but mystery solved!
Dylan gets funnier by the week
No, he doesn't. He keeps trying way too hard to be funny and is painfully unfunny instead.
@@jonbourgoin182 agree to disagree
@@jonbourgoin182 give it up dude, you're outnumbered
@jonbourgoin182 He's hit and miss with me, but mostly miss as of late.
I feel like we're witnessing an ongoing saga of Dylan's Supervillain origin story, and I'm here for it!
Okay let's just say this is simply just the battle toads episode. But it's crazy that like there's all these commonalities. Going from battletoads to double dragon to Jeopardy to sports trivia.
Damn thats a whole lotta battletoads. I actually still have Battletoads & Double Dragon on SNES and I feel old thinking about going to a non-chain game shop in the mall and buying a used copy as a kid. Its also the only Battletoads game I managed to beat... because the hover bike section isn't 100% bullshit that you need reflexes from the Matrix to clear.
Fun fact: Whole Lotta Battletoads was the original name of the Led Zepplin song. They changed it to Love, which I, personally, feel was the right decision...
Wow, what a strange week. It's just Battletoads and trivia. Also, I had no idea Battletoads was such a big deal, up until the moment it (almost) stopped existing for some reason.
Props to Editor Dylan for his effective use of the Clozer Woods Sub-Gate theme from Mega Man Legends.
Lot of battling going on!!!
I was starting to go crosseyed every time Battletoads was spoken.
Battletoads & Double Dragon on SNES was the very first game my family ever got for our SNES. I just remember never being able to beat Abobo at the end of Stage 1 without a second player to distract him in the corner lol. Wasn't until much later in my life that I realized how busted ramming your head into bosses was when playing single player. Good times.
Matt McMuscles did a massive playthrough of every version of Double Dragon recently. It is a 10 hour odyssey of some good ones, a lot of awful ports (especially of the second game), and the Battletoads Meet Double Dragon. He was tepid on this game coming into it as a Double Dragon fan, but boy was it fun to watch his frustration at how wrong they got the Lee Brothers.
I used to be a big Battletoads fan as a kid, and actually remember excitedly waiting for the premiere of that single episode of the Battletoads cartoon and upon seeing it...questioned what the heck did I just watch? Like...compare that single episode to even one of the TMNT's worst cartoon episodes and the TMNT was still superior.
Battletoads pretty much tanked after the 16-bit era and became a meme... Maybe if they had action figures out around the same time as the games, it would have helped the franchise do better.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had live action movies, comics, action figures, video games...EVERYTHING.
It wasn't until Mighty Morphin Power Rangers came along that the TMNT were finally toppled from their throne.
As bad as the battletoads pilot was, it was still better than the Tumblroads. At least the Dark Queen was STILL THE Dark Queen.
I remember discovering B-toads in arcades and being just AMAZED by all the stuff you could do, all the weird machine morphing for whatever reason, the effects, the intense setpieces and that snake boss.. it was stupidly hard and I couldn't get far, but that was all games at the time, for me. I never understood at the time why Power Rangers had such lackluster games. One fighting game was good, but it was just that. no big arcade experiences that I expected at the time.
Dillon, you sonawabitch.
*Manly sweaty handshake*
I love the way you present your sections. Don't ever change.
I feel that the Battletoads got the closest to stealing the Ninja Turtles' thunder in the early '90s. The 'Toads were perfect for marketing to kids, like TMNT. I mean, it worked on me. But It's a damn shame the Battletoads wouldn't get a new game until the 2020 reboot.
Neighborhood kids who lived down the street whom I didn't really like very much but they had NES games I had never played before were how I played a lot of NES games for the first time. Good memories.
Anyone else notice that the villain for the Battletoads and Double Dragon game's "Now you're in..." advertisement next to the dark queen is "dabbing" lol...
Battletoads & Double Dragon was amazing!!! One of the few games I would play with my brother for so long that our mom had to literally unplug the TV to get us to stop. I easily spent over 300 hours playing that game as a kid
A friend and me rented Battletoads because we were huge Double Dragon 2 fans, we played it every day, and thought it might give the same experience. Boy were we wrong.
Wow. Editor Dylan really suffered during this episode. Give him some kind of raise, please?
Dylan was hilarious in this episode I loved it
I've never heard anyone say "Battletoads" so much in such a short time...
Having played the SNES version Battletoads/Double Dragon was truly the crossover we didn't know we needed 🐸🐉
I’ve never beat a Battletoads game when I was a kid. I’m gonna have to fix that this weekend as I’ve conquered several SNES games I couldn’t beat as a kid. Latest ones I’ve completed were Super Metroid and Super Punch Out.
FWIW, the first Gameboy game is probably the easiest of the bunch. Although "easy" is still a relative term here.
I got Battletoads in Battlemaniacs for my 13th bday. I will be 43 this year and still never finished the turbo tunnel.
The rants in this video was fantastic!
Drinking game: Take a shot every time someone says “Battletoads”
I played so much of the Double Dragon Battletoads game when I was a kid. I loved that game even if it was pretty hard.
I have never played a battletoads game. My older brother's friend had it, but they never let me play.
My favorite Battletoads game is the Double Dragon one, I played the snes version with my brother and it was a TON of fun, and I feel it has one of the most under rated soundtracks of all the snes library, it definitely deserves more attention! it's just so good, man...
I remember playing 2-player Battletoads for the NES with a friend as a kid. It was insanely difficult so we turned on Game Genie for infinite lives but ran into the infamous glitch and that run was over. I beat it later on my own (also with GG I'm sure). It was tough but still super fun!
My favorite RUclips show
I've been watching the show since Jared said it was coming soon. I think editor Dylan's rants in this episode are hilarious. Keep up the great work!
Excellent video guys! I loved Battletoads in Battlemaniacs. The graphics were mind blowing for me at the time. Battletoads and Double Dragon was solid is simply for being easier than normal Battletoads.
Oh man this channel is great! Looking forward to watching each week
"It lasted *one* episode"
That caught me off guard even though I should have seen it coming.
Since you asked, I absolutely remember the first time I played Battletoads. I was 8 and went to Florida with my parents to visit the grandparents and became deathly ill for the entire stay... like, immediately. Could barely move. I had brought the NES with me so they rented Battletoads so I'd have something to do, and that's all I did for about a week.
LOL, Dylan... your segment was pure gold. I love you!
Battletoads & double dragons was my favourite NES game. It's actually one of very few decent NES games that have reached post-USSR countries in 90s, since all the cargtidges we got there were pirated copies from China/Taiwan and these guys used cheapest boards that had lowest possible memory capacity and never had any extra chips or save batteries (so no zeldas / castlevanias / etc). So, I loved the game really much, but just couldn't finish it due to pretty brutal difficulty. The furthest I could reach was level 6 (which was the last one as I recall). Only many years later I managed to beat it. In my adulthood on PSP via emulator with save states.
Dylan, hang in there man. You are the best thing in this show and everyone knows it!
I remember as a kid being in awe that the Silpheed background dialogue drops some cussing. "SHIT! They got the carrier!" among other lines.
🙂 It’s nice to see and hear ya, Jared. It’s been a while for me seeing stuff you’ve been in on YT. I hope you and yours are doing well. David and Dylan, it’s nice to be introduced to your work here. 🙂 I’m new to this channel and enjoying this series, so great job, guys! (& my thanks and appreciation to anyone and everyone else that makes it happen. 😁👍)
Battletoads Double Dragon was one of the coolest and most insane gaming rentals ever. I already knew it would be difficult. Both franchises made incredibly difficult games. And I just happened to be a huge fan of both franchises. A memorable game for sure. Probably my favorite NES game I still don’t own and I have way over 100 NES titles.
Editor Dylan is the best hahaha great show Jared!
Thanks for brightening my Friday!
I never played BTDD on NES but I loved the SNES version of the game and still do and the soundtrack for the snes version still sounds awesome today. I'm surprised you didn't mention the Snes version more Jared.
I got Battletoads Double Dragon for my birthday when I was a kid. Solid game indeed!
Dylan just gradually becoming more and more unhinged made me laugh, ngl
Battletoads in Battlemaniacs is one of my favorite childhood games
The first time I ever played a Battletoads game I was over at my cousin's place while he was sick. I specifically remember listening to the pause theme while he was upchucking in the bathroom.
You guys are ABSOLUTELY killing it. These episodes are a highlight of my week.
I’m stealing a quote. In the 90s all I wanted was to grow up, now that I’m grown up all I want is to go back to the 90s.
Thank you very much for what you are doing!
I picked up Battletoads in Battlemaniacs from Gamestop in the early-ish 2000's (for a bit cheaper price), and took me numerous playing sessions to finish it. Pretty sure I got the bad ending because all I got was "Oh no. The Dark Queen escaped." from Professor T. Bird. So much for all that hard work.
I was hoping you would cover Battletoads soon. I'm glad you did. Also, the SNES game is basically a sequel-remake of the NES original where instead of Pimple being captured, it's Zits. The game is also stupid hard, harder than the NES original. The Arcade game is also wonderful; intense violence, blood, some mild gore, and 3 player co-op. It's still very hard to play, but at least there's no speeder bike stages.
Cool episode as always! Not to mention just in time for my birthday!🎉🥳🎂
Bruh when Jared said the battle toads cartoon lasted for one episode I fell over laughing, they tried to be like the turtles so bad
The Battletoads games still awesome today. 😀👍🎮
Literally laughed out loud at the brain tumor line. Thanks for making this series-- really a fun way to remember. Subscribed.
As a big Battletoads fan, I never knew about Battlemaniacs on SMS. Thanks for the info. 👏🏾👏🏾
I remember playtesting Battlemaniacs before it's release back in junior high. I didn't get passed the second stage, but I loved the stage music!
Dylan idk how you do it, but you put a unique spin on your section every week. You make me laugh every time!
Battletoads is the original Dark Souls of Gaming
Nah. Battletoads is battletoads.
Battle Souls is the Dark Toads of Beatemups.
It's a good thing that that Battletoads cartoon never made it past a single episode.
Oh man how desperately they tried to make battle toads a thing before they just gave up. honestly I can't remember the first time I played one. But my family did have battle toads and double dragon.
I remember watching that Battletoads cartoon as a kid. It was part of a Thanksgiving block of stuff thateven as a kid it was obviously a bunch of specials and pilots that they aired either to try to recoup some costs or see if it could stick or not. Obviously Battletoads was one of the latter 2. Probably the recoup one because they replayed it on some other Thanksgiving day marathons the following years
I feel like without the benefit of the logo and box art, prior knowledge, or any other context, I would look at 'Battletoads' as a particular arrangement of letters and think it said battle to ads.
2:23 gaming in the Clinton years. If you know, you know.
Boy, I can’t wait for November 23rd, when we got a Sonic game, a Sonic game, and a Sonic game!
On this episode: Editor Dylan finally snapped.
“The turtles are named after renaissance painters; we’re named af fucking ACNE!”
Dylan is in the zone. Stay right there my dude!
Battletoads on Gameboy, so many angry memories. Speeder sections get the roar.
I remember playing Battletoads at my house, my older brother went to a video store and rented Battletoads in Battlemaniacs. We played co-op but I got upset that he always hit me on purpose just to make me upset
Do they do an episode mentioning E.V.O yet? I hope they didn't miss it, it';s such unique, innovative, and just all around great game. Seriously, there's no other game like it, at least not for a long time after it was made. An action RPG based around Evolving where you start as a tiny fish and have to fight/eat other creatures to get points to evolve into more complex creatures, from fish to lizards/birds, mammals, and maybe even human!
It's such a hidden gem of a title that deserves to be mentioned more often, that I really hope they don't forget about it.... (Watch with my luck, it'll already been mentioned and I either forget I saw it, or didn't watch that one yet..LOL)
it's all battle toads? Yes it's all battle toads this week in 1993
3am Dylan is UNHINGED AF, and I'm here for it.
I love Battletoads. Great episode!
This episode isn't now in the 90s . It's now here's battletoads
Man, that Battletoads cartoon looked almost as awesome as the Bubsy cartoon!
Poor Dylan... Poor, poor, editor Dylan... (this episode shall go down in infamy, mark my words!).
great episode 👍🏼
Editor's Dylan slow descent into madness was highly entertaining. And disturbing. But mostly entertaining.
I remember waiting for Thanksgiving so I could see that Battletoads cartoon and my local station didn't even play it. Though, looks like I didn't miss too much! I had no idea there were this many BT games. I only played the original NES game.
