I think one of the most important things this lesson highlights to me is that two way communication between the instructor and rider is critical. Rather than assuming Ash was intentionally giving the reins in the canter transition, Alicia asked her what she was feeling which gave Ash the chance to express what she was feeling in her own words and changed Alicia’s approach. Instructors often ask ‘can you feel that?’ and riders say yes because they think they have to. Asking WHAT they are feeling is a teaching and learning opportunity 🙌
Thank you so much for sharing your takeaways from this video! x
I love this video. It highlights that it’s not always your horse being ‘naughty’ when they break canter. We have to look at what we are doing as riders to see how much we affect the horse. A slight change of weight aid is massive to a horse. Looking where you are going is very important as it positions your weight, shoulders and head so the horse can balance. Out heads weigh a lot and the horse can feel the weight! What an amazing lesson. X
Love love LOVE these Ashy lessons!! Thank you Ash! For being so brave to have your ride filmed, it's so incredibly helpful and we learn soooo much from them! And thank you Your Riding Success team for making these videos happen! 💖🇨🇦
So glad you enjoyed the video so much! Thanks for watching x
Thankyou ash for this. I don’t think people realise how hard this could be to put yourself out there and be vulnerable. You did a great job ash ❤️
So glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching x
I am loving this series. So many insights I think I have to watch them all over and over. Thanks to the riders for putting themselves in the spotlight
Glad you enjoy it!
“No message,” adjusted all my aids after watching this video and my Ottb rode straight and through the whole lesson. Alicia is a “Superstar!”
Thanks so much Melissa!
It’s amazing to see how little “simple” things make such a difference like look through the wal where you are going that’s also very important with jumping but something you easily forget. Thank you a good reminder!
Absolutely!!
Well done Ash! I would imagine that my legs would confuse the heck out of him! Love watching these REAL videos and seeing REAL struggles. So helpful!
So glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching x
I love love love seeing some lesson with Ash! So nice to see a rider with a less experience ride a GP horse and having all of the explanations by you Alicia. I learned so much stuff looking at this video. How to correct something that isn't working well and then finally being able to execute it! LOVE IT!!! 😍😍👌🏻
Love that you learned so much from this video!! Thank you so much for sharing and we are loving the support!! xx
I learned that looking thru to where we’re going helps rider to maintain balance (and not give unintentional aids). So much fun to watch the progress.
I LOVE Wessel’s version of naughty (tiny tongue 👅 flash). What a good boy.
YAY! So glad you enjoyed the video x
I love the way you communicated the positioning and aids to Ash, and Wessel is such an awesome horse!
YAY! Thanks for watching, so glad you enjoyed it x
Wow wow wow! What a video! Thank you so much Ash for letting us watch you! The smile I got on my face when you got the canter on both reins was massive! Thank you Alicia, your positive attitude is infectious! Really learnt how sitting up can make such a big change and how keeping not just your hands but also your legs even can make such a difference! Also that Wessel is full of tricks and is amazing! 😁
LOVE it!! So many takeaways - thank you so much for sharing!
First.
Wessel is such a good egg, isn’t he…..❤️
I’m so glad Ash got to ride him. I haven’t been back “on” the horses yet, just doing groundwork on my body, and fluffing up the lesson horses to make them pretty 😊
I have been practicing a stance, bent knees and TUCK THAT BUM !!
Then I hold that position for a few, release and repeat. Hope this helps my core and balance.
When I do get to have a lesson, I can’t wait to use the “train tracks” and I have also learned from you, by just watching……
supple circles, are so important and it helps make some improvements easier. I’m going to use it to practice getting an extended trot…
Due to so many injuries my body is not very balanced, and I have Kyphosis in my back so I’m always rounded forward with the bum way out behind me.
That’s gonna change !!
Thank You SO much for helping me “feel” more confident . Wish I had been taught supple circles long ago. Would have made many transitions simpler.
Love you guys !!!!
❤️🐴from Florida !!
P.S. what is one of Wessel’s favorite treats ?
Thank you so much for sharing!! SOOO glad you are loving the videos and applying the tips!!! Wessel is a fan of the usual apple and sugar! We try not to give him too many treats since he is older and need to be extra careful with his weight! x
Love seeing your lessons with others, please keep them coming! Incredibly helpful as its more about correction and improvement which is quite relatable. As a re rider after 20 year break (!) I love your detailed breakdowns and real time adjustments addressing seat challenges (seat says upwards / trot when it should say forward' ) is a great reminder of where to bring awareness again when reactivating muscle memory. Your off horse weight shift demonstration was also excellent. I'll be trying all of this tomorrow on my wonderful lesson horse - a retired FEI level boy who no doubt has not been quite sure what I was asking. Thank you!
Thank you Carolina! Let me know how you go!
Keeping the reins even, let go not to support crookedness, look ahead - precious intakes today, Alicia, thank you, and Ash as well.
And sit tall and rise faster!
Kisses from Portugal😘
LOVE it! Thank you so much for sharing what you learned from this video x
Great lesson .. keeping the contact even through the corner ! Love the holding your buttons on you shirt . Really good analogy
Perfect! So glad you learned so much from this video x
I love seeing Ash’s lessons - it’s so amazing how just focusing on your lines improves things. I know that I can get stuck focusing on what’s not working and forget my lines too, so this is such a good reminder for me!!
You can do it! Let me know how you go!
I think it helps to see Ash, it helps us know we all have things to improve on, and that we definitely can improve like she does.😍😍😍
Ash is doing such a fantastic job. I really love seeing what an every day rider looks like on a grand prix horse, it's so educational. Love seeing her riding and her confidence in herself growing as the ride goes on!
My biggest takeaway is it's possible for riders like us to ride Grand Prix horses!
#Harlow !!
LOVE it!! So many takeaways - thank you so much for sharing!
When riding on well trained horses, they can be super powerful feeling. I love the comment on here to remember to be fearless! As I kid, I had a pony who would run off at the canter. She had real balance problems and I had no instructor so it takes a lot, at times, to ride through that fear and go for it. Plus the muscle memory of what your body should be doing takes loads of practice to develop. It's a process for sure. I love that folks can ride Wessel to find and gain confidence and then muscle memory.
So glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching x
I agree, Ash very is brave showing us her riding journey. Looking where you want to go is basic but everything falls into place when you do.
100% agree!!!
So simple but your right the connection between reins and horse is so important! I’ve been consciously working on this with my young horse and what a difference in the consistency! Thankyou!!
WOW!! Super amazing!! Glad the technique worked for you!! x
I really, really enjoy these real time lessons!! They are amazing and demonstrate more of what the reality of riding is actually like and the hours and hours of practice that go into making riding look effortless. I personally would like to know how to take a green/uneducated horse and get them to do the fancy trots. Thank you for all your time and energy Alicia you are amazing and very fun to watch you coach.
Thank you so much for your kind words! Love that you are enjoying the real time lessons!!
I just subscribed and already watched three videos! I have learnt how to put your horse on the bit and so much more. Thank you I feel so much more confident in my riding from you ❤️
Awesome! Thank you!
OMG 😮 in the chat with the live zoom Ash talks about leg yielding on the circle and then asking for canter.....guess what BOOM straight into canter on first ask ..AMAZING....THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU...the highlight of my day 😁🙏🐎🐴
WOW!! Super amazing!! Glad the technique worked for you!! x
I love your tip about looking up!!! To keep your reins even not to throw them away when asking for canter these are all my problem areas!!!! HUGE HELP THANK YOU Alicia!!!!
So glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching x
What a super lesson. Detail, clear and concise. Gréât lesson helping al’ of us. This is what really happens in a lesson.
So glad you enjoyed the lesson so much x
Well back to basics here we come. Look up and straight lines. Something I always forget especially since I ride by myself so much.
Love your takeaway!! Thanks for sharing!
1) I really need to get a notebook to jot down notes
2) biggest thing I learned: LOOK UP. I am that person that when something goes wrong, I look down and that completely affects my posture in the saddle
Great riding Ashley!
So glad you enjoyed the video Vicki!
Great to hear about how our seat could be blocking the canter and not only looking up, but looking further than where your going helps. Lovely!
So good to hear!!
Amazing Wessel!! Real time lessons are very very helpful for me and I'm able to understand almost everything. Thank's Alicia
YAY! Thanks for watching, so glad you enjoyed it x
These are just awesome to watch ! Thanks to the ladies who let us watch. It's amazing how quick Alicia fixes the small mistakes but all the riders are awesome riders. Wish all lessons were like this !
Our pleasure! Thanks so much for your kind words!
Ashly well done! A Grand Prix horse is probably much harder to ride with so many buttons. As usually great instruction - thank you!
You're welcome x
Well done. The best thing i learned from this video was that you have to sit straight forward and be aware of how to put your weight. And also Cavling great contact with your horse. I hope I’m going to win:)
Thank you so much!! Sounds great!
I love! the joint video with you guys from Harlow and popcorn! You all are so nice! 😊😄✨🤩
Glad you enjoyed the video xx
Bravo to Ash! Bravo to Wessel…and of course Bravo to Alicia❣️ I tried the “looking through the wall” and also looking up and where we are going! It works❣️ it was an awesome feeling! I was having trouble keeping the canter going…My Mare would fall out of canter into a trot that I can’t sit and I would be out of balance. I just couldn’t stay with her and ask for the canter again…I would have to regroup and slow her down and try again. But now, I look forward and she keeps going in canter! Thanks to Alicia for the proper teaching and to Ash for demonstrating this fabulous result. Cheers and well Wishes to Wessel, the Wonder Horse ❤️
Wow! Thank you so much Lynne for sharing! :) Love this!
Amazing job Ash and Alicia!! Fun to watch your breakthroughs. We learn from you. Thank you.
So glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching x
I must must must ride Wessel! Look up, the changes, beautiful. Where I live, when someone has a schoolmaster, they won’t let anyone else ride them, which is stingy because I am quite capable. So I pay oodles of money to ride lesson horses that , I KNOW I am making better. What a conundrum. I will never stop riding
Thank you for sharing!! I am so sorry to hear about the situation where you live. I hope it changes in the near future and you can ride them as much as you like.
This video made a huge difference in how I rode all of my horses today! My biggest take away was thinking of the rein and bit as one solid big rein. Huge difference in each of the horses I rode today and all of them are very different. Thank you!
YAY!! Thanks for sharing!! AMAZING job!!
so exiting , i love how you communicate with your guest and you so nice ;so helpful thank you sooooooooooo much
Thank you! 🥰🥰🥰
Love that analogy with balancing the rein and canter transition. My horse wants to go into a fast canter and falls apart. I know it's a balance issue but haven't really considered that I am supporting her too much and trying to hold her back and not just letting her find her balance on her own.
Love to help!! xx
Would love to document what I’ve learned but there’s just so much. Soooo in love with Alicia and her training style… could never thank her enough x
Aww thank you so much!! :) Alicia is so grateful and we are loving the support!
Using leg yield to bring your horse back to trot soon as they canter, cant wait to try that one! My horse gets very distracted outdoors so correcting with opposite rein really helps thank you Alicia! 😘
Woohoo! How exciting!! Tell us how you go trying this out x
I watched this video the other day and then got to ride shortly after so it was fresh in my mind and I was able to add some of these changes you did with Ash! I have seen your video about proper pelvis position before but always forgot to try and check my own pelvis. Lately I have been doing what Ash was doing when things don't go right I pitch forward. I kept telling myself to sit back BUT forgetting that's the symptom not the problem, MY PELVIS! I have tried other suggestions in the past "sit on your pockets", "go behind the motion a little", "pull lower abs up". This stand up and tuck works so much better for me instantly and then I am just there and able to stay there! I should have tried this months ago when you did the other video! Thank you Ash for participating in these videos so helpful!
So glad you enjoyed the video!! So glad the pelvis tips helped! x
Great episode! And Ash, great riding! Your trot position has improved so much! That’s very motivating! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for tuning in! Love the support for Ash! x
These videos help me so much and have gained so much confidence in my canter because of these videos!
Perfect! So glad you are learning so much from these video x
@@YourRidingSuccess keep up the great work xx
Thing I learned is keep both legs on to get to the canter.
Harlow and popcorn
woooohoooo!!!
Yes ash! Hopefully see you doing that trot in no time!
Stay tuned! x
I had no idea my shoulders tipping forward was because of my hips!!! Now i know what to work on, thankyou xx
Perfect! So glad you learned so much from this video x
So good to see the explanation when it all falls apart because you try and try and then just revert to pressure 🤦♀️ I am guilty of this. It is so good to see it happening because it gives so much insight. It is still hard to stop 🤣
Thanks so much for tuning in! glad you found the video relevant for your riding x
The best thing for me was just do it!, when Alicia says just break through for 1/2 second, trust your instructor and the horse, don't overcomplicate things! It seems like then you can move forward
Love this! :)
I cannot believe i never knew my shoulders were a symptom of my hips. Now i can really try with the 80/20% to try and help with tipping forward. Such a brilliant help thankyou xx
Perfect! So glad you learned so much from this video x
'Look thru' advice was a nice way to get her to lift the sternum. You could also see the rider confidence grow. Sap that I am, can't help but feel such joy at her success!
YAY! So glad you enjoyed the video x
I love your horses . it is very hard to treat a horse and we'll done ashy .I love watching your videos and Harlow's I am so into both off your videos
Wow!! Thanks for checking out the videos!! We hope you find something so helpful for you x
Really enjoyed the info you provided on the leg yield into canter during the question with your DMA member, thank you! I’m riding a younger pony at the moment and he is still learning his canter (and I’m ‘relearning’ riding after a long time off). I have tried it, and also going back into trot right after we get the canter and it really does help! We are both understanding each other and the transition is smoother :) #harlow 😉😉😉
LOVE it! So glad the technique worked well for you!! We can't wait to hear more about your progress!!
Great job, Ashley! I know it is important to look up but this really showed me, thru Ash's experience and words. Also a good lesson for me to "pop" with my legs versus dig and nag. And think about getting the canter in one step in the corner..
Perfect! So glad you learned so much from this video x
Great to See the different between looking down and up
Great video as always!
YAY! So glad you enjoyed the video x
the training scale keep at it and do not give up. in a few weeks from Alicia wrote it to me and I only on the training scale and working with the amazing epic booms I have gained more confidence despite physical defects by myself and on a non dressage trained or ridden regularly very thick irish cob are we come a long way and even though we have our bad days we also have amazing days now
Thank you so much for sharing!! So glad you are gaining confidence!! x
One thing I learned (there were many): "Shoulders are a symptom of your hips"; and "take the pressure off" to "reset"
LOVE it! Thank you so much for sharing what you learned from this video x
Hi guys, Thanku so much. The email made it so much clearer. I did do less of an angle. Let him find the canter more by himself when I brought him back to the trot I went straight into rising trot. I had been taught to sit during all transitions. Not focused on that he found true canter nearly every time. Thanks heaps again! Vick from Oz.
You are most welcome Vicki!!
I learned the Wessel is an amazing and sweet boy that can take care of his rider. As far as looking up, I get better forward motion when I posture as if Im riding up to a four foot jump. My sternum comes up and improves my balance :)
Wow! Thanks Laure! So glad to hear!
Thanks Jesse guldenpfennig for recommending this site. Really useful. 😊
YAY!! So glad you are enjoying the videos so much x
My biggest take away from this was how important the basic are🤩🐴
Perfect! So glad you learned so much from this video x
Harlow and popcorn 🍿 🐎
Love it!!
Good job Ash!
Taking notes, balance position through the pelvis will fix my shoulders 👍🏼
LOVE it! Thank you so much for sharing what you learned from this video x
Leg yield off the wall, canter, leg yield back to trot, forward up the wall, no message. 🙌🏻
LOVE it!! So many takeaways - thank you so much for sharing!
My pony needs serious work on straightness and canter aid. Love your videos Alicia, I wouldn’t be without x
YAY!! So glad you are enjoying the videos so much x
Great job Ash! I needed this video to help remind myself of the basics when I get stuck. Thank you!
YAY! Thanks for watching, so glad you enjoyed it x
Thanks Ash for being brave enough to show us that mere mortals can also get these things right with perseverance ! i also tend to hang on one rein a bit so must remember the train tracks and to be even with both hands!
YAY! So glad you enjoyed the video x
I learned the two way communication between the rider and the teacher is capshis and you are so cool
Super!! Love that you're learning so much from this video x
This video has really reiterated how important the contact is! I drop the rein all the time as well, I think I assume “if I let it go I’m giving him the space to go” but that’s not really the case. So that was really interesting to see.
Also, I very much learnt that he’s probably not as easy to ride as you make it look 😂
Super!! Love that you're learning so much from this video x
Soo everytime I watch your videos of you teaching someone else riding your horses I have paid attention to you saying "Think tall" when making a transition from canter to trot. I have never thought more of this because I just thought that is how your horses are trained and I thought it wouldn't work on mine - so this has never been a takeaway from me. Now I just need to highlight this as a big takeaway. I thought of this one day when training and decided to try it. And WOOOW. It did in fact work on my horses, and it worked really well with so little effort - because basically, I'm just thinking tall and then getting my transition. Thank you so much! This will be the standard practice in transitions from now on.
Love this! Thanks so much! :)
I struggle with the trot to canter on every single horse at the riding school. After watching the video twice, I get what Ash says about beeing thrown out of balance because that´s how I feel. Instead of cantering the horse goes on a faster trot and I lose all my bearings, so on my next ride I´ll keep in mind: balance and even reins, balance and even reins , balance and even reins.
Super!! Love that you're learning so much from this video! We can't wait to hear how it goes for you when you try this technique on your next ride x
It’s so true that when something goes wrong we focus on that and forget the simple basics make the difference. Keep your train tracks!
Love it!!
Thanks for another wonderful video
Perfect! So glad you learned so much from this video! Thanks for watching!!
Great job ashy …. Definitely gives u a big insite into where buttons are on well trained horses. Also I think ur help on the sitting right with ur pelvis definitely is helpful to me I do struggle with sitting quietly on the horse
So glad you enjoyed the video Gemma! x
Great Ashy .l love this lesson because I see every Fail onme but much worst and and now I have some clue to try to solve. thanks a lot
You got this!
I never thought about my shoulders reflecting the angle of my pelvis. I really wish I'd had someone tell me how to adjust it because my whole life when I was being told to "open my hip," I was just bending at the waist. Still working on tucking my butt under haha I also tend to let my outside elbow move forward around a corner so it was helpful to see it in an exaggerated way so I can understand why it's not correct. I love seeing people who aren't professionals getting these lessons and learning in real time!
Perfect! So glad you are learning so much from this video x
Man I never realized how much looking up made a difference! And that your seat in trot is to go back and forward and in canter is to go forward. Love these videos so much!!
Perfect! So glad you learned so much from this video x
Whenever I would try to get my canter my horse would not canter and I started to do everything in my power to get him to canter and I would end up leaning forward and gripping with my knees until he would go and this taught me how important the basics are and to trust the process
Thanks for sharing, Kiara! Love that this technique is working well for you x
Handsome Wessel! 😍 Well done Ash! Thanks for remembering me to look up!
YAY! So glad you enjoyed the video x
Oh, Alicia, this was so helpful. I think Ash should have the 500 pounds for allowing us to watch her and learn so much. My horse does not keep cantering and I realize when something goes wrong I do just what Ash does, lose my pelvis, tip forward and give the reins. Also I stop looking where I am going and lose the train tracks. Just concentrating on these made an immediate improvement this morning and I am so pumped. Yeh!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you so much for sharing!!! We love hearing this! You made my day!!
That was so great to watch Ash, love the 1 tempis, Wessel you good boy and looking uppwas a big 💥 moment for me too💥💥💓💓💓💓
YAY! So glad you enjoyed the video x
Great takeaways! I’ll work on not squeezing, but just a kick. Make sure I’m keeping her shoulders straight, and also not throw away the reins when I canter.
Thank you Marcia! x
Really lovely lesson to watch!
Thank you x
I learned by your great comment .. in counter canter Do Not leave your outside leg back a all the time or you’ll have trouble in the changes . Brilliant ! No one has ever told me that .. thank you so much
Thank you so much for sharing your takeaways from this video! x
👏🏼 another awesome video, thanks Ash and Alicia! I definitely clamp up if things don’t go my way transitioning into canter so it was really good to hear these reminders!!
YAY! Thanks for watching, so glad you enjoyed it x
Omg!tysmm i learn lots from your videos
Happy to help!
That subscriber is so lucky
Thank you x
Me and my ex racehorse recently stepped up to BD and have learned so much from your videos! They are always so informative and inspiring.
#harlow 🤞
woooohoooo!! Happy to help xx
I loved everything you said and I think this all will help me in my canter transitions and all my riding.
YAY! So glad you enjoyed the video x
I think the best message is if you get stuck, go back to the basics, sometimes when I ride I will get flustered, then you can't accomplish anything , just go back to the basics, then you will progress with your horse, and accomplish so much more!
100%!!
Wowee… watching this episode was as if you and Wessel were training me live!!!
This is the “exact” challenge I’ve had with my canter transitions. I’m so excited to get to the barn and take this approach step by step.
Thank you ☺️
That is awesome!
❤aww 🥰 well done 👏 you! I hope your dream 😢comes true 😂🎉
Thank you so much!!
I love your method of teaching and how easy to understand it is. The thing I don’t think I’d of known if it hadn’t been for your videos was the banana as well about how you’re better off using open jumping boots than anything else, even on the flat, to allow tendon support but also ventilation #harlow
Thanks for watching and sharing your takeaways! x
Sorry I’m a bit late catching up on videos again. So much learnt from this ‘lesson’ (it’s like a virtual lesson for me)! I have a tendency to open my hands to turn (from my childhood riding days after such a long break) I loved the explanation about keeping the hands together on the neck because otherwise the horse is almost wobbly in that open space from your hands. Another great thing I took away is to sit back and almost scoop the seat when asking for canter. I still sometimes lean forward a bit and I think (from what you say) it’s the wrong motion and doesn’t give the correct aid from the seat. I watched this video twice so I could try to take in all the information 😂 my riding instructor constantly tells me to look where I’m going (and turn my body) and it’s crazy how much difference it makes 👌🏻 these are the best types of videos I learn from because I’m seeing a normal rider like me make mistakes and learn from mistakes! Her persistence was great to see 👌🏻 x
Woohoo! LOVE that the techniques work well for you and we can't wait to hear more about your progress!! x
“Look up!” is always good to remember! Best advice, really can change your riding, but so easy to forget and just stare at the horse😅
So easy to forget! Thanks for tuning in! x
Instead of looking down and digging into sides, look *through* where you want to go and pop then release pressure from legs. Thanks Ash, Alicia and Wessel!
And loved #Harlow with George - pure joy
Love it!!
Excellent video. I love this real time lesson which was absolutely full of the most important riding points. All points referred to were so helpful and ones I can immediately put into my ridden work. In fact I can’t wait to do this tomorrow. The piece of paper with the main coaching points will be in my pocket enabling me to access them if required. Ashy you are an inspiration to us all…..and I can’t wait for the next real time lesson which I hope will be very very soon. A huge Thankyou
So glad you enjoyed the video Linda!
I just love watching you teach. This is so beneficial. I love & I'm going to try it, of looking "through" where you are going. And Wessel doing all those tempies😇.
You are so welcome!
believe how much of a difference keeping the reins level and equal ( not sure if that makes sense) makes to the stability, straightness of the horse. That pressure cock up is exactly what happens when we try to hard to either please others or make it work right away for ourselves. Love the way you say just ride like your on a trail ride and allow yourself to relax.
The part about not letting the reins go because it confuses them and you lose the ball effect was so simple but a definite, why the heck hadn't I thought of that before moment. I tell uou something it makes perfect sense why you get so excited and enthusiastic about educating people. Love it love it love it.💛💚
There was a noticeable difference in Ashley's seat, she looked taller but yet relaxed. Looking forward made a biv difference. The exercise you gave to look through the wall or letters was so effective.
Perfect! So glad you learned so much from this video! Thanks for watching!!
That fiddly bit about the rein placement and what it does! What a subtle and wonderful bit of learning there. So much good stuff in this one. Thanks to Ash for letting us watch! It is super helpful to watch a "normal" rider session on a horse like this!
So glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching x
