@@zzlove2289 Most places are super cheap. I paid maybe $3 for mine at Ace Hardware. Just make sure they aren't fakes. Google how to test your glasses. Quick test and you're good. Best wishes!
This is AWESOME!!! My daughter and I just made our own cereal box eclipse viewers using your instructions and they turned out great!!! Can't wait to use them in a couple of hours!!!
Super fortunate to be able to make this last minute to view the eclipse for April 2024. What a great way to use resources that are at home. Definitely a lower cost option compared to the glasses !
Thanks. I have glasses but hubby does not. So making a box and we can go back and forth. Plus, it brings back fond memories of my dad making us a viewing box for solar eclipses. So fun!
Wow. I remember this eclipse because I live in KC and it was happening when I worked in a parking garage at the time and I had a chance to see it. This year I'll make a pinhole lens box to see it.
Lakeland, FL.....80% here. I tested this cereal box method and it worked for the sun now at 9:17 am. Crossing my fingers it will work for the eclipse this afternoon.
Thanks, Wes! Didn't find solar glasses before they were sold out everywhere. It took me about 5 min to make the viewer--took me back to elementary science projects.
This is by far, the clearest and easiest video on how to make this pinhole camera. I love how you show every step. Could you do the same for putting something over the camera lens?
Thank You So Much and i found the your Video & Great Instructions! My Daughter & I made Ceral Boxes To Watch Eclipse Here In Michigan! Thank you so much!! Deeply appreciated !
I followed your instructions and put a nail hole but the image was very blurry. I got a pin and made several holes and the images were clear and focused. Thanks for the instructions!
Why does one need to use aluminum foil? Are other materials acceptable for the pinhole? (I just worry about the foil getting crumpled or ripped as it gets transported and handled. Also, is a nail sized hole better than a true pinhole? (I've seen some that use an actual straight pin.) I'm guessing it is easier to aim with a slightly larger hole? (nail vs. pin) Thx
The foil lets you poke a hole neatly while also keeping out all of the surrounding light, and the material is thin so it doesn't skew the light. As long as you can make a hole in the box that isn't all messed up, that's all that you need. The size changes it slightly. I tried both a tiny pin hole, and also a larger hole about the size of a medium nail. The tine hole makes a really small sun dot, but it's slightly more focused. The larger hole will make the sun a little larger, but slightly less focused. I much preferred the nail-sized hole. You can use a potato chip bag (the "metal" type) and that stuff is way more durable than regular aluminum foil. If you're using the sun as your light source, it's just as easy to aim both. If you're trying it with a lightbulb, it's harder to find with the small hole.
The longer the box, the larger the image of the sun, so the best thing would be a pinhole for image sharpness, and a long box for a large image. When I say long box, I mean the distance between the pinhole and the paper viewing screen. People who make how-to videos without first mastering the subject really piss me off.
I made one... bought the largest size cereal box I could find.. But, used a paper punch to get a perfect circle. Any other implement only made jagged or mis-shaped holes... is the paper punch size too big? I tested it.. it works, but is there any "danger" in the larger hole?
Chief Meteorologist LOL. i made one focused the sun great in fact so much i could not see any eclipse My buddy used two paper plates and with on on the ground the the other held up beside his head he could get a good focus and see it easily SO i wasted my time and missed it listening to the educated Chief Meteorologist
Hi Wes enjoyed the video! I've been trying to find a solar cover for my camera and have not been successful. Where did you happen to get yours from and is it ISO 12312-2 complient? Thank you!
FYI. That "little hole you poked" had better be perfectly round with no pieces of foil sticking out in such a way as to block any of the light. The image you see will be exactly the same shape as the shape of the hole. Using standard foil makes that pretty hard to achieve. It will tend to rip rather than allow the nail to drill a round hole in it. Not having heavy foil, I used a very thin piece of wood and drilled a hole about the size of the one his nail made. Even at that, I had to clean up some little slivers of wood. This process does work, so don't be disappointed if you have to work at it a little bit. Good luck with it.
Here for the April 8 ‘24 eclipse in Springfield Missouri! God bless❤️ anyone else??
Just made mine out of a club crackers box 😭
Your video is still working wonders 6 years later. We’re having a solar eclipse tomorrow morning here in Oregon ❤❤❤
Thank you! I will use this for the Total Eclipse for April 2024.
I don't want the risks of using glasses to look directly at the sun.
we both just was looking how to make our own glasses since we dont have money to but them XD
I made mine! Looks awesome I’ll be trying it out in Arizona partial eclipse tomorrow!
Me too

Just keeps giving back - thank you! My son has an eclipse to see today here in Santa Rosa, CA.for April 8, 2024. Cheers!
Thanks! I made 3 because the solar glasses were all sold out where I live and they work like a charm!
Thank you for the easy yet safe way to watch the eclipse information
Thanks. I have glasses but hubby does not. So making a box and we can go back and forth. Plus, it brings back fond memories of my dad making us a viewing box for solar eclipses. So fun!
Thanks for great instructions! Solar glasses are totally out of stock in my area so will try this. And Finley made a cute cameo appearance!
This made so much more sense than when I read about it online. Got mine done. Thanks!
S/O from NorCal!

Ok this is the best video I've seen out of the ones online. Totally fun.
This is the best instrumental video for the eclipse viewer! Thanks!
Thanks for posting this. Made one for my wife and she is having a good time watching the eclipse.
Thank you! Glasses are sold out so a Cheerios box it is. Will be a partial eclipse here. So excited for tomorrow!
Thank You! All these "how to" sites gets confusing. Your instruction was simple, safe, and sure! Good work God bless

A great tool, worked fantastic without having to spend money on Solar Eclipse Glasses. Thank you. I watched it from Titusville, FL.
Thank you for covering this. Unless my work takes the time to let us see it, best we can get is a video.

THANK YOU! I made these for me and my little brother because glasses have been sold out for a week here in Texas
Thank you, this is the safest way to view the eclipse. The plans i downloaded at NASA are exactly like this video.
It's 2023...thanks for reminding me how to make this.....again.
The only reason I'm watching this video is because of my science teacher and this video is interesting!!!
Kaljit kaur the video is interesting to me too
Same
Thank you for this, I couldn't get glasses this year, it's April 8th 2024 right now and today's the eclipse ❤
i’m in oregon just made one, hop it works!!!

Thank you so very much for this great video. You are really helping a lot of us. Have a great trip!
My sister followed these instructions, and it worked great!
Mine didn't.
It works great! Here in Texas we're having a total eclipse today.
I followed your instructions and put a nail hole but the image was very blurry. I got a pin and made several holes and the images were clear and focused. Thanks for the instructions!
Thank you! Going to be making a few of these since I’m in class that day
For the eclipse on Monday, April the 8th 2024, I need to make this as the glasses are sold out everywhere.
So cool! This is way better than spending tons of money on a family pack of solar glasses
Perfectly explained on how to hold and make
8bitgamerkid lol I'm also prepared cuz it's eclipse tomorrow
@@raymonddumaguit15 eclipse in some hours now I have made mine works perfectly
This worked so successfully! Thank you so much!

Secret Profile we can see it for 3 min I think it will be like at 9 am
rainbowpuppy kittycat no matter where you are it will last at least an hour.
Abigail Jackson oh really my teacher said it would only last 3 min where I am at
rainbowpuppy kittycat Well your teacher is wrong.

When you think you're in 2017 but you have to go back to middle school project tactics lmao
We would be great neighbors........My go to cereals too.....

Sarah Wood don't look at the sun no matter the size of the hole in the box
I'm from Toronto Canada and I made my box and I can't wait to use it. I hope it works. ☀️🌑🌎
This was very creative! Thank you.

Sweet! I made one, I'm lucky I don't have school
Alexis Bell same
Alexis, what do you do with the bottom of the box ??
I left it alone, only cut the top the way he showed :)
Alexis Bell same. My school starts in September
Josh Andress you are a savage. I'd do the same thing.
Thanks I'm gonna use it for my school science project.
Yo we all here last minute to see if we can watch it for cheap
DudelikeYEAH100 Yup, I know I am.
Yup. In Toronto. There are no stores that sell the Glasses. U have to order it online or u have to go to the local science center.
DudelikeYEAH100 haha that's why I'm here 😂😳
LOL here I am, same predicament 2024 😂
Nice! I made one, too. We are viewing from the band of totality in Georgia.
Me making this 10min before the solar eclipse
So the purpose of the box is to let you now when the sun is 93% covers which will make it safe to look at in that moment?
Thanks, I'll wait and see if it works down in San Diego, it's overcast right now, so that sucks... Thanks though for the video, loved it!
I've got my eclipse glasses and I'm ready.
Great explanation!! Thanks!!
Great video, thanks Wes!
can you use a smaller box?
where can you find the glasses?
Thanks! Worked great!
I am so exited for the solar eclipse
Lesly Lopez Live it up because the next one is 200 years away.
Great Family project !!
I have ready my project 😍😍thank you so much

Does it matter what side you have the foil? Shiny side or dull side?
The foil is just because it is easy to poke a hole into
I saw two vids that said to put the dull (less reflective) side to the sun. so the shiny side should be inside of the box.
Great tutorial! My pinhole is a little jagged and miss shaped . Will that make a difference ? Thanks again.
psychcw no. I also used a pin. It might just look a little funny. Did u test it on a light?
no aluminum foil. help. what do i use instead
You could try punching a hole into paper

Thank you! You explained so clear!!
it actually works! even when you look at lamps in your house
Just made two patiently waiting here in Supply North Carolina
Would. It happen in san antonio?
I keep, seeing solar eclipse advertisements about bananas help me survive the ocean of bananas
Thank you , I will make one for the next solar eclipse on june 21st. 2020.
just made my cereal box viewer, I've got a front row seat on my mountain
Great video
I'm just gonna take pictures of the different stages with my trusty cereal viewer😂😂😂
Is it ok to make the whole bigger in the aluminum?
My school won't let anyone go outside and will put my school on lock down during the eclipse
FLL aviation central that is to protect you from all the people the eclipse turns into zombies .
FLL aviation central that sucks
Damn our school bought glasses for us and are taking everyone outside to the football stadium
then don't go to school on monday
That sucks. But it's so that in case some idiot looks directly into the sun and goes blind, the school won't be sued.
Can you use regular notebook paper
