I don’t see why they’re so hated. I thought Lady Bird was great, and Little Woman was sweet and charming. All in all I’m looking forward to Greta Gerwig’s future career path.
I don't love this band, but I love that they exist. They're a bunch of Zep nerds living their dream, and the fans of the old music that fuels them are embracing them. It's all so delightfully earnest, and I can respect that.

@@AthosJosue apparently to most people something either has to be amazing or it’s trash. This album was extremely impressive and I’m fucking stoked that there’s a modern band that can nail that classic rock sound. Led Zeppelin sound-a-likes or not
I couldn’t believe my ears when I heard the outro of Tears of rain the first time. But it’s mostly the harmonies and the piano for me. So beautiful. It reminds me of 90’s world music, like Enigma. This band has so many nuances and people are stuck with the led Zep comparisons because they have limited musical knowledge and ear basically
Well, I guess I'll go against the grain here and say I really, really enjoy this album. To me, I would place their first album at about a C, decent enough to listen to, but other than about 4 songs, nothing I'd want to save to my library, and many many moments where they sound extremely similar to LZ. However, I think Battle sounds much, much different and in a positive way. Ultimately I feel like the things people hate about it don't bother me as much, and the things they just find "not bad" I find very enjoyable. I would agree with all of the criticism's made here; the mixing leaves a lot to be desired, especially with volume fluctuations, Josh goes all out with his voice a bit too much, and the album's first half is definitely better than its latter half. I particularly am disappointed with the last song, and think it ended relatively sloppily. With that said, I think the changes they've made from Anthem to this album are very notable, and pay huge dividends. The song structure is notably more progressive, and as a big fan of prog rock I really appreciate it. It makes the songs sound dynamic, and keeps you hooked as you wait for one section to give way to the next. They also incorporate this in multiple ways; in the first half of the album, a majority of the tracks more or less end with a big (>2:00) guitar solo ending, and in the second half they switch things up more drastically throughout the entirety of those songs. Most broadly, I just think they have hit a really great sound that is much more unique and gripping. I'd give their first album a C because there are some good riffs and instrumentation, but little that really sticks out and has staying power. Here, the lowest I'd give any track is a B-, because they all do a much better job of forming something greater than "good rock song". Almost all of the songs have parts or riffs stuck in my head I remember distinctly, and they stick with me as songs that went big, tried to achieve something more than just radio-fodder and really succeeded. And since they will always be compared to classic rock, my personal opinion is that this album really does not come off as overly derivative, be it of a specific band or a general sound. It certainly sounds "old", like something straight from the 70s or 80s, but that's a good thing. I enjoy that kind of rock, I enjoy that time period's distinct sound, and so I like this. Their songs are high tempo and rather aggressive, which you could compare to Led Zeppelin, and they can also be pretty bombastic, which you could compare to AC/DC or Van Halen, but I truly think that it hits a sweet spot where they are firmly their own thing. Built By Nations is the only song here that really makes me think "damn this really sounds like [other band'". Otherwise, it just sounds like new, good music that fits very well within my classic rock tastes.
i feel it falls flat on its face in attempting to make this big bombastic sound with each song, it feels very plastic and lifeless. sort of how Dimash performs with this alien vocal register, but lacks any real emotion, which for me is more important than any technical prowess- GVF lack in both of those departments for me.
I honestly wholeheartedly agree with you, I think GVF are definitely improving from peaceful army and they're on the right track, maybe their style didn't mature quiet yet, but it is getting there, and I wouldn't enjoy nothing more than to watch them grow themselves more and more. I honestly enjoyed battle at garden's gates, it had a dystopian theme to it, at least for my ears, and it made me feel like the world is ending and I'm witnessing the birth of the hero who is gonna save us all, idk if that makes sense, but yeah, good album.
Led Zeppelin ripped of many blues artists , Greta Van Fleet ripped of Zeppelin. Don't you guys see Greta are just providing the justice that was promised.

I give this album a strong 7/10. This album shows growth, variance, depth. And their musical chops are Clearly high level. I really think their lyrics need alot of work and Josh voice is great he just needs to find his range and sound even more. I found their closing track the weight of dreams one of their best songs on the album.
I think the weight of dreams might be their best song so far. Beautifully put together, with lyrics that to me are about admitting that they stole their musical style from past legends and they're going with it, to make that sound live on. Also how fortune leads to a life of excess which can ruin you.

The rating of 2/10 doesn't square with the review. He described an album that he appeared to find mediocre, yet gives it a 2 out of 10? I think he likes Greta Van Fleet more than he lets on, but thinks he needs to express strong dissatisfaction with them in order to be considered cool and hip.
That’s how music reviewers like him are. They take something that’s mediocre at best and rip into it, acting like the object of their hate is the worst thing ever created.
@@michaelegan3522 I think they sounded too much like Zeppelin on their EPs and first LP but I don't think the songs themselves were too similar to any particular Zeppelin songs. I wasn't put off by the way they sounded like a hard rock band from the early 70s so much as the fact that they dressed like they were in 1973. That's a turnoff because it makes their band look like a Nixon era rock reenactment. But their songs were generally good and they were pretty good at their respective instruments. They haven't really fulfilled their early promise as the saviors of classic rock in recent years. Their last 2 albums were broadly regarded as "meh" even by their fans and they've been playing increasingly smaller venues. They appear to be sailing swiftly towards irrelevance. This was a circa 2018 thing it seems and not something that was built to last.

I feel like Anthony was pretty hard on this one tbh, I felt like there were a lot more positives mentioned throughout the review to end up as a 2, but I sort of agree with him when he says that the factors that annoyed him only become more prominent as the album continues. When I listened to it was really impressed at the half way point but other than a few small sections felt that the album started to really slog in the 2nd half. Can definitely agree with being better than Peaceful Army though.
It's so weird to me that there are so many people who love to hate them and seem to not really listen to them, just keep repeating the same knock-off jokes. If you dislike them, just move on. For many of us, their music is absolutely incredible.
Same goes for those of you that like them. Just move on, there is no reason getting angry toward those that don't. For many of us, their music is not that good and that is fine. It's all subjective
@@geokalaigeokalai3185 Sure, but I feel like it's different to say "Hey, I think this band is great and they're really doing something special. Stop ripping on them with the same old jokes without even trying to appreciate their new music" than it is to say "I love to mock this this band because because they are popular and don't sound exactly like I'd want them to".
@@kcg285 I grew up listening almost exclusively to punk and hard rock but it's just impossible to get past the "Led Zeppelin, but worse" sound that GVF have really stuck to. I really gave this album a try but it just made me want to listen to LZ1 or Rush. Not saying you can't like the band but calling what they're doing "special" is kind of disengenuous because they're just re-creating a worse version of classics from decades ago.
@@dankmemez7031 I feel like that is a respectable opinion, though. If you don't like them or think their predecessors are better, that's cool. The thing that rubs me the wrong way is not people disliking them or preferring other bands, it's just those who endlessly mock them with the same old jokes album after album. It's not just on RUclips, it also happens in reviews from sources like The Guardian with the infamous "ejaculating hyena" line, and it just always sounds to me like people don't really give them a chance, they just tease them because they know it'll get a laugh or because that's what other people are saying. In any case, I guess there are always critics. It just seems like GVF gets a lot of hate from casual listeners because it's the cool thing to do. Glad to hear you gave the album a shot, though. I have to say, I've started listening to Led Zeppelin and Rush thanks to all these comparisons. Like "if they really sound as much like them as people say, I'll probably like them too". I prefer GVF, but in any case, it's cool they are bringing the generations together.
@@kcg285 Also keep in mind that GVF are super popular at the moment (for the "rock" standards but also music in general) so there is a balance there. Yes, there are a lot of critics giving them negative reviews, but for every critic there are hundreds of people that are really passionate for their music and will defend them. There can be toxicity from both sides of the spectrum and I think most of us can agree that being respectful and understanding is the best way forward.
Har Har Led Zeppelin comparison Har Har This album is fun and filled with great melodies and instrumentation. Josh killed it with the vocals. God forbid artists have classic rock influences. When the biggest issues are some production issues and personal preference then I think you have a decent album whose rating should only be based on opinion. AF is allowed to have this opinion but I still think 2/10 is very harsh for this album. I’d be damn proud of this album if I had anything to do with it. I read a great comment that said “Sounding like LZ is a problem i wish my band had” This music is great.
I listened to the whole review in hopes that I would find more critiques I could identify with but it honestly sounds like you just dislike the band conceptually and that will never change. You’re really really reaching for many of these critiques and id rather not listen to someone try to justify a decision they made before listening to it
Agreed. I got less of a feeling of critique and more of a feeling of trying to shoot down a young band who have truly broadened their horizons. The lead singer needs some tuning, but the range he can hit is amazing for someone of his age and the album itself gives me mid 70s encouragement music vibes. He does border on screeching in some and that's where composition could be much better, but I truly find beyond the hard spots that they have big potential as a band.
I like a lot of music that Fantano rates highly, but I also really like this album too. I didn't care much for the debut, but I'm greatly enjoying this one. I'm one of those music fans that loves heavy metal, punk rock, *and* progressive rock, and I would not want to do without *any* of them, so I don't fully fit in with the punk/indie/alternative crowd, *or* with the classic rock crowd either!
The thing is: The whole album is a mid to slow tempo slog. And the vocals, man, the guy has got an awesome voice, but he uses it without any nuance. When you sing at maximun energy level almost all the time, then the high points just don't feel that high anymore. They become the 'normal' and then deafening at some point. Too bad, because there is actual growth here, I think. As Anthony said, the singer has expanded his palette, and some of the riffs are cool. Still bloated and for me kinda empty inside after all.
I absolutely adore this album and the band, but this is a much better and more defensible take than both the actual video and like 99% of this comments section. All very valid points and criticisms
@@fernisaperson Thanks! Maybe that is because I actually love the first song I ever heard of the band. Higway tune. What an amazing and energetic song! Because they tried to actively downplay their heavy reliance on Led Zeppelin in their music, they tried to play it off like they were hardly even considered which is pretty obviously false to anyone that’s listened the first four Led Zeppelin albums.
If you don’t know what Led Zeppelin sounds like and can’t imagine what a bad Zeppelin tribute band sounds like, you’ve failed the rock literacy test. You evidently have a lot of catching up to do before concerning yourself with the banality of Greta Van Fleet.
I actually liked it a lot. It's just that Fantano wants every musician to experiment I ways that he has never thinked of because that's what he expects.
Please make up your own minds people, I love all the classic bands, but I, unlike most, think this album is absolutely brilliant. I love everything Anthony hates, spark one up and give this epic album a go, in the future this will be regarded a masterpiece, sometimes people just have to jump on the bandwagon, make up your own mind 🌈✌️
Let me break it down for everyone: 1. Greta Van Fleet are stale 2. They need a new producer which should be Brendan O Brien hands down 3. They need someone to write their lyrics. Have you read any of their lyrics? Sounds like a toddler wrote them after getting his new rhyming dictionary 4. They are what I’d say predictable. Lots of flash and talent but don’t know how to write an album properly. They need structure and dynamics badly. 5. The lead singer needs to evolve. To me he’s the weak point of the band. It’s just the same thing over and over again. Their bright spot is their bass player. He’s a total genius and it’d be nice to build around him. 6. In conclusion I’d hire Brendan O Brien as my producer, Gillian Welch as my songwriter, and give leadership to the bassist. They need someone to take control.
@@theflllisherman1984 yes but not as much as you’d think, there was a picture of Robert Plant on the fridge in the studio with a quote of his but I only heard Led Zeppelin’s music get referenced a couple times, they mostly listened to obscure smaller bands that made softer blues rock music, I remember Jake showing me his favorite bands but I can’t remember the names of them
Funny how they ACCIDENTALLY use their sound for their vocals and bass and guitar and drums just with far less finesse and personality. I’m sure they could be a great band in a few years but it’s like they can’t just piece it together
I think they just went #1 in about every billboard rock chart there is with this one. Out doing both their first two albums by a long shot which means they're becoming more popular not less. Food for thought, GVF isn't going anywhere or losing popularity anytime soon. Actually I believe the opposite is much more likely.

Most of these "Led Zepplin Fans" in these comments, couldn't name more than 5 good Led Zepplin songs. They would get stuck on the "Stairway to Heaven". An overplayed meme of itself.
They are not fans. Some of them just know them by name. Probably they saw a Zeppelin shirt in a clothing store and they're likely totally unaware that they disbanded more than 40 years ago... They've just heard that this new band sounds like a band from the past and they repeat it because they think it sounds cool..
Dear Melon, i dont see how the fact that Greta Thunberg isnt playing the ukulele in this band is relevant to the review. Please do better next time :^)
I don't know melon man, I think that 2/10 is way too harsh. Yeah production kinda sucks, but Heat Above, Broken Bells, Age of Machine are kinda bangers
4:55 It is kind of annoying, isn't it? Also, guitarist opinion: His guitar playing is sloppy because his #1 influence was a dude who spent 3/4 of his career pissed on Guinness and nodding off from heroin instead of practicing. He thinks its okay because Jimmy Page made mistakes... Well, you're not Jimmy Page. Improve the formula, and you'll get everyone's attention. If you played like Jimmy Page TRIED to play, you'd stun people.
Second guitarist opinion: when it comes to lead and solo stuff he riffs a lot like Jimmy Page, who just so happened to be a sloppy pentatonic player like every 15 year old listening to an Em backing track in their bedroom. But, I do think his blend of chord and lead riffage is very creative, he rarely lets a chord simply ring out, it always has to have some fancy finger dancing or a quick riff in between, which I like. I think he has good improvisational intuition, if only he'd learn more diverse scales
@@Diax1324 I don't watch him play live a lot, especially because the camera is mostly focused on the singers very tight pants the entire time. But whenever I play their stuff by ear I guess I instinctively do it with good technique.

You're 60, so you naturally like this album.
@@greatpower30 you probably listen to 21 savage lmao
@@Luke101 I don't even know who that is you knob.
i feel it falls flat on its face in attempting to make this big bombastic sound with each song, it feels very plastic and lifeless. sort of how Dimash performs with this alien vocal register, but lacks any real emotion, which for me is more important than any technical prowess- GVF lack in both of those departments for me.

@@dankmemez7031 I feel like that is a respectable opinion, though. If you don't like them or think their predecessors are better, that's cool. It's not just on RUclips, it also happens in reviews from sources like The Guardian with the infamous "ejaculating hyena" line, and it just always sounds to me like people don't really give them a chance, they just tease them because they know it'll get a laugh or because that's what other people are saying. I have to say, I've started listening to Led Zeppelin and Rush thanks to all these comparisons. Like "if they really sound as much like them as people say, I'll probably like them too". Let me break it down for everyone:
1. Greta Van Fleet are stale
2. They need a new producer which should be Brendan O Brien hands down
3. They need someone to write their lyrics. Have you read any of their lyrics? Sounds like a toddler wrote them after getting his new rhyming dictionary
They need someone to take control.

immediately scrolled to the bottom of the description just to laugh at the score. was not disappointed.
Holy shit I wasn't expecting that 2 at the end lol. I know you weren't impressed but you sounded like you were gonna give it a 4.
From a strictly musical point of view I think it deserves a 4. The 2 is for being derivative.
After hearing this album I thought they were legit just trolling us as a Led Zeppelin parody band
This is a weird way to spell "Porter Robinson - Nurture ALBUM REVIEW" Anthony
I know right
yeah that one is "NOT GOOD" not a 2
This
Yall such haters the album was good
So nice of Greta Thunberg to make an album about Gardens 😃
This album basically sounds like Led Zeppelin x Fleet Foxes
@@jessecrockett8127 He also needs to work on technique. That's part of my gripe.
@@Diax1324 I don't watch him play live a lot, especially because the camera is mostly focused on the singers very tight pants the entire time. But whenever I play their stuff by ear I guess I instinctively do it with good technique.
@@jessecrockett8127 third guitarist opinion here: jimmy johns is better than subway
@@brandonmerritt8611 agreed
They're not the worst band i've heard but they're not doing nothing new. Funny how so many people are praising them like "Rock is back!" or "OMG so progressive"......do these people ever listen to anything other than the radio?
There are literally hundreds of kick ass full on rock and metal bands out there right now making better music than this.
Any suggestions
@@Master-vh2wm Search for a band you like on Spotify and then go to the "fans also like" section of the page and boom - there's 10 more bands you might like. Rinse and repeat.
@@spiderjerusalem100 lol couldn't name one. Have a spine and try to back up what bands have better music.
@@Stormcrownn shame, idles, black country new road, black midi, and if you enjoy the kind of classic rock gvf blandly copy I would recommend king gizzard and the lizard wizard along with The Long Faces some great classic rock acts that actually put their own spin on the genre
@@Stormcrownn king gizzard and the lizard wizard, cannibal corpse, behemoth.
I have listened to Greta Van Fleet reviews 10x longer than actually listening to Greta Van Fleet
Yeah, same.
is Asian-looking Fantano in the thumbnail a nod to Michio Kaku, Led Zeppelin's guitar player?
If you don’t love Age of Machine, I don’t care what you think.
This album was pretty damn good and the duvet was alright this has way more hate than it actually needs
Anthony over here flexing his second vaccine but I already got my third
Personally, I thought the chorus of “My Way, Soon” smacked. Sue me.
lmao that's a real shame because the title and artwork for this album gave me the impression that they changed it up a bit this time.
Again, I recall Sam or Jake saying “it’s not a good thing to master music.” It was something along those lines. And this is where I realized...now I understand why.
