This was one of the first jazz tunes I ever learned- "Honeysuckle Rose" by Fats Waller. I've been literally playing it for over twenty years, but I still try to challenge myself to find new ways to approach it (and occasionally quote TV themes in the middle). Subscribe for more!

@@chopholtz4950 _"Simply being educated in playing an instrument."_ Nothing wrong - technically - with what you write, but you miss out a whole load of other stuff, like interpretation, nuance, influences, style and so much more. So a grade 8 musician could probably play a lot of classical music competently, but would they be good enough to play at the Royal Albert Hall, or Carnegie Hall or any other world-class auditorium? Only a small proportion.
Playing a musical instrument to this sort of level is so much more involved than you describe. It's like trying to compare driving a car well to playing an instrument to international standard - most of us can learn to drive a car very well given the right tuition, skill and attitude. Playing an instrument is something else.

this assumes that he’s trying to play an arrangement exactly as written. In most cases, the stride piano of Harlem is improvised and so sheet music wouldn’t really be all that useful. What you need to remember is the melody and the harmonic structure and you’re set.
Go look at how emmet cohen and Luca filastro handle this piece, and you’ll see what I mean

Because stride isn’t music you can sight read. Memorisation and muscle memory is key for this music

Is there a better way to start your day than with Fats Waller? Love it.
One little bit of technical feedback - for solo piano, especially with something this lively, I feel like it might be worth backing those mics off from the strings by maybe 6 or even 12 inches. The level of percussive 'cut' that would help it come through a busy band mix gets a little overwhelming when it's on its own... (That said, if you guys keep the mics permanently rigged for PMJ, that's fair enough - gotta do what you gotta do!)
