No one is talking about the message in this song. It's about a boys toxic masculinity, and how the boy thinks pushing around girls is a way for him to prove he's a "man." The girl has it hard as the boy is trying to push her to a lower level of self worth, using her as 'his toy' as it states in the song. But, the boy also has it hard as he is taught being a man is masculinity, and feels as if he can't be genuine with his emotions, so he bottles them up and let's them 'circle the drain'; also stated the song. The demo of this song focuses more on the girls pov but this version focuses on the boys' and girls' issues with each other and outside of their relationship. (Not meaning they're romantically involved with one another, but that they have an enemy type relationship.)
Yeah, that’s what stunned me about this song. It was a girl standing up against abuse, for one, and it was also emphasizing how toxic (fragile) masculinity hurts everyone.
If I may add to these excellent points The male, with his toxic masculinity, believes that he is a man. He belittles his girlfriend because he believes it esteems him, hides the sensitive, sour, fragile image under the "manly" costume he puts on. As if abusing her adds to what constitutes as making him a man, when it doesn't. It only portrays him as an abusive and fake person who can't face the realities of expressing who he could and would've been. The use of lemons, I believe, is a metaphor in this song to represent "opportunities". The lemons that were given to the boy are used to make himself appear more grown-up and masculine. The "squirt em into our eyes" is an example of how the boy allows his toxic masculinity to overflow, taint, and disrupt others. The girl is tired of being used as his puppet, as she should be. She finds it absurd that she isn't in the relationship for romantic purposes, but to help the boy and only the boy. As if being useful to him is her only self-worth; she wants to get revenge on him, desperately, demonstrate the pain he inflicted on her back at him. But she doesn't want to encourage his abusive behavior, seeing as it could only make him think that such abuse is acceptable if both partners do it. Although the boy may remain unaware, it doesn't justify his use of abuse and toxic masculinity towards her. (At least how I see it, I'm not a psychologist)
Ngl, this song shows the relationship between my mom and I perfectly. She portrays Cavetown’s part PERFECTLY, only wanting my attention to hurt me and snapping when I don’t give her what she wants. I portray Brye’s part pretty well, not wanting to back down and standing strong on my decision to ignore my mom.
Nice! I like this version better tbh, I was just listening to cavetown before bed. I was going to listen to Wilbur soot but I think cavetown was a good idea 😌
someone said to listen to this song because they liked it and they think i would like it..... i love it! i am happy they told me to listen to it i love it btw!
dedicating this song to every egotistical chads who I’ve met for the past years who kept denying their feelings because of their lack of power and jealousy when it comes to me
I relate to this song. There was this guy who was my friend. Him and I clearly liked each other. It was all perfect. Except for one thing. He is straight. Or was. I’m a trans guy. There is absolutely no way he never liked me. Or maybe he liked my attention. Either way, I spent the whole summer with him basically. It was all just perfect. Then school started and we were in a class with a lot of his friends. He started being really rude to me but when I drifted away he’d always try to get my attention back. It was an endless cycle and I’m still trapped in it. He’s nice, but then he’s mean to impress his friends, and when I react, he’s worse. I’m basically making lemonade out of the lemons he throws at me, but it stings.
I think both parties in this song are not great. As someone with BPD, the boy really portrays at the very least my experience with it. He can't help how he feels, and isn't entirely in control of his own emotions or reactions. And the girl is trying to use that as a way to call him sexist, which if you actually listen to his parts, he very much isn't being sexist. His issue is with her, not because she's a girl, but because she did something that upset him and he obviously tried to push those felings down but failed to. It might really be about the whole "girl power" thing, and the boy is probably supposed to be totally in the wrong with no redeeming qualities, but I mean. It feels obvious to me he's letting his mental illnesses control him, and she's knowingly using that to "win" the argument in spite of pretending to be the bigger person. This is not about the singers themselves, just the characters within the song.
