The Light - Disturbed While it's in general incredibly well shot, the performance section is just absolutely gorgeous. The performance and story sections have contrasting color schemes, with the story section having this dull coolness that feels unusual for a music video. It's my favorite music video, and in my person opinion one of the best ever shot.
In the music video of 'Outcast' by NF, the jail cell shots were lit so well for the dark dramatic feel they were going for. The overhead key light created such a dark/dramatic feel, which complimented that jail cell set perfectly.
Definitely the entire sequence that plays out in LCD Soundsystem's All My Friends. It's a beautiful choreography of light and practical effects that enhances the mood of the song tremendously.
I like how the light was used in the video: Hello - Adele In some parts the contrast with the light is very marked while in others it is soft. I like how this gives a good idea of the sadness that a person lives. Those sad moments are told really well with the light used. 🙂
That is a beautiful video. So naturalistic yet surreal with the coloring. Good point about the contrast, that's an aspect of the video I've never noticed before!
This was a GREAT episode! As a proud owner of 2 120d mark iii and several of the Bowen mount modifiers, I love how you guys give me options to put them to good use. DRAMATIC MUSIC VIDEO LIGHTING: For me, a great modern video is Joyner Lucas Devils Work (ADHD) This video encompasses a lot of the skills that were mentioned like side lighting and showing the environment. As well I could see this being lit with a 300 D and 120D mark iii on the artist and some smaller lights to give texture to the background. It was clearly lit wide. With the camera on a gimbal. Hopefully, this will be good enough for the SKB CASE. I NEED THAT!
I love the new work of Paul Thomas Anderson in Anima. My favorite sequence is when they are on a kind of cave and there are projections. It's a fascinating lighting setup, it's complex, interesting, and it just draws you into the world of the music.
Such a cool video! All of PTA's music videos are so visually interesting. He puts so much thought into everything from the lighting to the choreography. Great pick!
EVERY shot in Pulp's "This is Hardcore" video which was obviously intentionally over the top dramatic. Brilliant video. But just so I mention something specific - the slow push-in in the beginning when the piano intro kicks in on their keyboardist on the white grand piano.
My favorite has to be in Kendrick Lamar's ELEMENT music video with the broken glass window frame over the boys' eye near the end. To me it communicates the emotion and character of the song perfectly!
@@danielanemedia9068 I did! Gordon Parks' photography is a favorite of mine. My favorite from him is referenced in the video even the boy with the leashed bug on his head! So great
I love the lighting in Sofia Carson's music video Back To beautiful. Especially the opening shot where she is walking on the stage and the lighting is just perfect. Another portion of the video that I like is when the Laser lights come on.
Very informative video ! As a young DP (I’ve just lighted my first music video last week with that two 300mk2;) for the next projects i’m really wondering how I can precisely evaluate the power of the sources? For example in this video how did you determine you need one or 3 300 D’s or why HMI 1.2 kW instead of another 300d ??? Thanks
Synecdoche Montauk - Wherever You Are This music video in it's entirety is a loveletter to cinematography. I like the scene with artificial sun reflecting from flooded floor the most
Glad you're feeling better Vee! Best music video lighting? I can't say I have a fav, but Childish Gambino's Sober has a lot of complexity in it that most people miss (which means they did an amazing job with it).
Sam Smiths Writing on the wall. The use of the back lit subjects just give the video a very cinematic feel. Really great soft light that’s easy on the eyes. A lot of production value added on top of one of the most talented singers in the world.
J.Cole “Middle Child” The scene were COLE is rapping being side lit and the background is completely black. Then a lighting flash (probably from Arri 120 SkyPanel) revealing the background full of bodies.
These videos are really useful even if somewhat "artificial" and basic. It would be nice to know shooting f-stop and ISO to get an idea of how much each light is contributing based on the space.
Two of my favorite videos would have to be side ways by KB with the back lighting in the where you can see the shadows of the people towards the camera pretty dope. The key light I thought could be a little bit softer maybe less shadow. My other one is this is America by Childish Gambino specifically the ending scene where he is running and people are chasing him. The lights above his head make it so dramatic.
Negative fill is an amazing tool to have on set, and technically the easiest lighting element because it's the opposite of lighting! Anything black and none reflective can work as negative fill!
YES! LOVE this question and I HAVE to go with My Chemical Romance “The Ghost of You”....WHERE DO I BEGIN! @1:30 & @1:36 those transitions are so tasty and perfect tie everything together! @2:30 the syncing of the drum snare roll hits to the machine gun shooting is so spot on @2:45 my FAVORITE shot of Gerard Way fully committed to the emotion of the song and environment just screaming by the bar. PERFECTION! ruclips.net/video/uCUpvTMis-Y/видео.html
In Lorn's Acid Rain, seeing how they used the lighting from the front of the car headlights as a backlight, coupled with the diner lights is incredibly well done! The mood side lighting, and smoke added to shape the beams from the headlights makes this shot from a dramatic music video incredible!

The opening shot of PANIC ROOM - by Silent Planet has a PTSD- scared marine running up a trail like he's being chased. It's only on frame for about 4 seconds but it looks super powerful and moody. To top it off I don't even think they used any other lights than natural sunlight. I could be totally wrong though!
The music video that has my favorite dramatic shots is "Samson" by Regina Spektor. I love the cinematography as a whole it looks like it was shot on film or stop motion which I think she uses a lot. The shots of her at the piano are so moody and the shot of her in the mirror just makes me feel like I'm watching an old black and white movie. ruclips.net/video/p62rfWxs6a8/видео.html
Great example! That's a beautiful video and a great use of mixed media formats. This video shows that simple lighting with creative artistic techniques can combine to create something really beautiful!
Would kill to have even a single apeture 120d for my music videos... Realy hard and super expensive to get lighting like this over here.Watching your from Nairobi,Kenya, Africa
recommend a godox sl-60w. 1/6 of the price of the 120d and pretty much the same power... great color accuracy. bowens mount and relatively quiet.. highly recommended.. And if you want to get a 300D but for half the price, get the Nicefoto 3000. 2-3 times the output and half the price..
Most iconic use of light in a music video ever has to go to Michael Jackson's Billie Jean. The lighting up of the sidewalk is just burned into the memories of my childhood.

I love the use of blue gels and creative backlighting used in Florence + The Machine - Never Let Me Go, especially at the 3:31 & 4:06 marks.
You guys should also mention what camera gears and camera settings you used with the lights!! That'll be a complete video in my terms!!! Please...
@@ArshanTravel Thanks for the feedback, we'll keep that in mind!
21 Savage - "A lot" is lit beautifully, Xiaolong Liu did an amazing job.
the setup that is still my favourite it is from Kandrick Lamar music video 'HUMBLE', the opening scene with a spotlight and fog.

Almost every frame in the DANIELS' music video for The Shins' Simple Song is dramatic and beautiful. Definitely one of my favorites!
Those guys are legends, great example!

loved the use of practicals
Great tutorial!!!!! When you do a video like the last one in black and white, do you have a prelight day to figure all of this out?

Cradle of Filth "heartbreak & seance". The whole story part of the video is one big dramatic shot.

@@aputurelighting for sure I can't wait to shoot a music video where I can have budget for lighting.
and that’s what I’ve always wanted an empty light case. The winner has as a reason to buy equipment to fill it up.
Nice!✌️
Most recently would be I think Im ok from MGK! Awesome lighting setup, simple but had a good aesthetic.
Any kind of black backdrop that can absorb all the light? also to use it as flags. Thank you!

Heart - Elevator shot with panther in "Nothing at All" video. I always liked how that was shot.
I think kygo & selena gomez - it ain't me music video is amazing in every shot love the lighting of it especially the tunnel scenes
The shot which i like the most is the jail shot in Enrique's 'Addicted' music video. It is with a nice and dramatic low key lighting.
The opening shot of PANIC ROOM - by Silent Planet has a PTSD- scared marine running up a trail like he's being chased. It's only on frame for about 4 seconds but it looks super powerful and moody. King Krule - Biscuit Town
The shot where the camera pushes into King Krule's room and spins around him as he starts to sing and walk around.

How to shoot action scene lighting
NF -Therapy Session, opening shot is super powerful for the songs theme.
The hotel room scene in Bieber's "what do you mean" is iconic at this point, right?
Oh for sure! The lighting that went into that scene enhances the feeling of the song so well

Um. Michael Jackson - Thriller?
Classic music video, great pick!
Opela sparkles and wine it like cinematography lesson more than music video
Selena Gomez - Wolves has a lot of nice lighting. It's super gross that she is laying on a tile shower floor at a public pool though, yuck!!!
