Angelic voice. I loved this - I have never heard of the singer or the song, but I liked it. It's cool that you think of the new years celebrations around the world. Being able to go so high in his registers, reminded me a bit of Dimash. I have to admit I didn't pay attention to the lyrics, I only marveled at this beautiful voice. I relied on your thoughts, and I bet they're as good as any. Thank you! ❤

@@AleksReacts It's a nostalgic song about impermanence... provided we reconsider the translation of Floating light. Is it floating or fleeting ? Fleeting light is perhaps more appropriate than Floating light, as it refers to an ephemeral light that fades quickly rather than a floating light drifting gently through the air.
To better understand, let’s first look at the original lyrics :
"Fleeting light, like a dream, like an illusion
Who is calling softly in the wind ?
      Memories surge, flooding my heart
Those years we once walked together.
Time flies, years pass like a shuttle
Who is whispering gently in the dream ?
      Those smiles, those tears
All turn into dust in the fleeting light".
Now, the lyrics of Shenshen’s version are very different in words but retain the same essence :
"I watch my fingers pluck a butterfly, stirring a farewell
I push open the silent years, turning a page of dreams
You and I merely crossed paths, did we ever make a vow ?
I step into a nostalgia both familiar and strange.
Your eyes are filled with the weight of time
Behind you, stories pile up into chapters
This life is like a dream ; I wish to count the passing years
And write with you the seas and mountains turned to fields
Fleeting light, shadows across colorful clouds and peaks
Your thread weaves through thousands of years
Life is but a fleeting thirty thousand days
In this vast world, we linger, we cling.
You say that moonlight once lit the same ancient walls
The eternal and the momentary, now silent and wordless
I want to ask you if this starry sky has never changed
      Yes, yes
      We gaze at it
The wind whispers by my ear, an ancient song
This is me, this is you, what we have never forgotten
The path taken, the destination, it is you who answer
      Go, move forward
      We will meet again someday".
In this version, Shenshen of course breathes his own melancholy into the song, along with his vulnerability in the face of the prejudices that once stood in the way of his dreams. The fleeting light clearly evokes the ephemeral moments of success or happiness in his tumultuous artistic career.
But, as some comments have rightly pointed out, this song also speaks of the Chinese people, shaped by moments of joy, sorrow and resilience.
More importantly, fleeting light (in other words, impermanence and the transient beauty of life) is a central concept in all Eastern philosophies, particularly in Buddhism. And there you have it : the metaphysical dimension always present in Chinese songs.
Do you now understand why fleeting is probably a more relevant translation than floating ? Because these lyrics evoke the fleeting nature of time (as suggested by thirty thousand days), despite the persistence of memories through the ages. The fleeting lights symbolize the ephemeral moments that shape our lives.
Still within the metaphysical register, the song also explores the invisible bonds between beings across time and space. The eyes filled with time suggest accumulated wisdom and experience.
As for the images of the moon, mountains, and clouds that intrigued you, they symbolize the enduring nature of the world, in contrast with the brevity of human life.
And finally, in its eschatological dimension, the song ends with a promise : "We will meet again someday," which serves as the Buddhist counterpart to impermanence : the continuum, beyond time.

Thank you so much for sharing more about the meaning of the song!
It was definitely the lack of my knowledge of Chinese culture that stopped me from understanding the full context and meaning of the song. Glad to see that in a way Zhou Shen managed to impart the feeling, as he had me wondering if he's singing about something in his own life, about music spanning over time, about love or passing of time/life, etc. So it seems that even without background knowledge he can certainly convey the emotion that makes one wonder and question one's own thoughts.
I keep asking and no one wants to tell me (probably because I got it wrong). Could you please tell me if I managed to pronounce his name and the name of the song close to correctly in the intro?

@@AleksReacts You probably know the Chinese proverb : "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime."
So, here's how to always know how to pronounce a foreign language : go to the basic "Google Translate" page, select "Detect language" in the left column, paste 周深 浮光, the pinyin transcription will appear below, and finally, click on the speaker icon to hear the pronunciation.

It's been a long time since I didn't wrote anything in the comment sections for many reasons, but I felt that you are different than others on RUclips from what you said during this performance. Yes, he is a male. When he was young, his voice didn't change during puberty and he got bullied just like a lot of people out there even now. He was scared to sing or speak in front of people but later on, he found a platform on the Internet in which he could choose not to show his face and still be able to sing. He studied in Ukline in dentistry for 1 year, but because of the language barrier, so he had to change to Classical music training instead and graduated. He can sing a lot of genres and he can sing over 13 languages, not including Chinese dialects. His goal is to combine Classical and pop music together to introduce to those people who don't know or enjoy classical music. He is an extremely humble and funny person. A lot of music can heal people but not many can heal the soul. Zhou Shen's music is one of them that can heal your soul. If you are willing to dig in more of his music, you will be surprised by his talents. Welcome to Zhou Shen's music world and thank you for reacting to this performance.

Thank you so much for such high praise! ❤️
This is the first time that I've ever heard Zhou Shen and though I didn't expect it, he pretty much enchanted me with this performance. Truth be told, he is neither the first nor last person to do that, as there are many extremely talented artists out there, but he is the first one I reacted to who's from China.
Many also mention that he was bullied due to his voice. I've gone through that for totally different reasons and all it did is make me even more determined. If only bullies knew that there are two possible outcomes of their actions, neither is what they wished for. One: we become much stronger and achieve more thanks to them; Two: they destroy a life. They want control and they never get that outcome. I wonder if they ever stop to think... probably not, or else they wouldn't be bullies...
I really like the idea of introducing classical music to people who have not heard much of it or enjoyed it though modernizing it somewhat. In any case, this is the first one, but I plan to hear more, already have a few suggestions to listen to. Hope you'll enjoy them with me.

Thank you so much, Dear Aleks, not only for reacting to this adorable "Floating Light", but above all for loving our little Prince. Of course, as you’ve understood, Eastern languages, which bathe in a poetic haze, are very difficult to translate into our much more precise Western languages. Moreover, the lyrics of Chinese songs are often of great metaphysical depth, leaping across centuries and millennia as if they were mere hours or days.
This video is an edit by the American fan club, but its base is a live concert given by Shenshen last year, if my memory serves me right. I chose it over the original because it includes subtitles and summarizes the artist’s journey.
Having been a frail little boy afflicted with a girl’s voice, living without parents with his sister in a backward little village in the mountains of Hunan, Zhou Shen endured more than his fair share of mockery and bullying during his childhood. He carried this lack of confidence with him onto TV sets, still palpable until 2018 in Super Vocal. Already approached as early as 2013 by The Voice, he was too afraid to accept competing but finally let himself be convinced in 2014, performing the sublime song "Huan Yan" and stunning Wang Feng, Na Ying, and Yang Kun, who thought they were hearing a girl ruclips.net/video/C-x1l6mqTwU/видео.html
Trained in Bel Canto in Ukraine (after an aborted dentistry degree), and therefore in singing in multiple languages, Zhou Shen - also known as Charlie, or more familiarly Shenshen, or even nicknamed "Little Prince" - has, for the past four or five years, been China's No.1 star on RUclips and one of the most beloved singers in China (perhaps soon worldwide, since his 10th-anniversary tour has swept through London, Vegas, New York, Toronto, Melbourne, Sydney, and Kuala Lumpur).
Beyond his unique vocal cords and absolutely mind-blowing control, he is irresistibly endearing thanks to his kindness, gentleness and humor. If Dimash's fans see their idol as a god, Shenshen's fans see him as an angel. The only difference is that our little Prince playfully yet frequently teases his fans, especially during his comedic duets with his best accomplice, A Yun Ga. He even once uttered a phrase that catapulted him to the pinnacle of my esteem : "Fans have walls."
We cannot speak of Zhou Shen without mentioning "Big Fish", written by Yin Yue and composed by Qian Lei in 2016 for the animated film Da Yu Hai Tang (Big Fish & Begonia), whose OST was entrusted to the still-rising Zhou Shen. It was this song, profoundly tender and moving, that first brought him renown. Since then, it has remained his signature piece, becoming one of the defining songs of the younger generation, alongside The Pearl Curtain by Huo Zun and The Wild Child by Su Yun Ying. He has performed it an incalculable number of times, including duets with stars like Tengger. But my favorite duet remains the 2017 version with Guo Qin, a young competitor on "Sing China", whom Shenshen - already respected in the industry but still painfully shy - came to support in front of Liu Huan and Na Ying. It is by far the most moving version, even though others were inevitably more polished technically ruclips.net/video/57LZBdoJG68/видео.html
Today, at the age of 32, Shenshen seems to have completely overcome his shyness and lack of confidence. He also appears to be an absolute workaholic. He is practically everywhere on TV shows. Sometimes, for one or two weeks straight, he literally appears every day with a new song, a new style, a new duet alongside some of China’s biggest stars (except perhaps Xiao Yun, with whom he doesn’t seem to get along). In short, his RUclips videos number in the hundreds, and his masterpieces in the dozens (and I mean a lot of hundreds and a lot of dozens).
Among his most famous performances, let’s mention Time to Say Goodbye, Memory, Dalabengba, Rubio, Monster, China in the Light, What is Human, Paradise Island, Ring the Doorbell, Baby Dasvidania, Four Classicals, Unravel, Decoded… And his most beautiful duets : Years with Huang Qi Shan, Upwards to the Moon and Free Walking Flower with Sa Ding Ding, Ulaanbaatar with Anda Union, Song of Laughter with Gong Lin Na, Light of Sanctuary with JJ Lin, Listen with Tan Wei Wei, Flowers All the Way with Angela Zhang, and of course The Story of a Small Town with Teresa Teng…
We will certainly see him more than once during the current Spring Festival celebrations. He has already gifted us, in this setting, a very beautiful and rather unusual Spanish-language duet with Juan Diego Florez, set in an Andean-style atmosphere ruclips.net/video/UNrQmmLBrKI/видео.html

Thank you as well Mr. Zero for the first introduction to Zhou Shen! Listening to this performance was a true delight!
I believe that I would like to hear his first performance of "Huan Yan", his most popular song "Big Fish", but hopefully just him, as it's hard to react to a derivative without knowing the original and I don't know anything about this man, and finally since the last video you shared is private and I do love the few songs I heard throughout my lifetime of Peruan music (we actually had long-standing Peruan buskers here in Belgrade for almost 20 years and we've all heard them in our city center), how do I find the non-restricted video of his duet with Juan Diego Florez?

Nice reaction, Aleks! I have heard about him, but never listened to him. He has a very beautiful voice for sure, kinda ethereal. Not sure where to place his register though, probably somewhere in the countertenor / soprano realm. Not the voice you'd expect to hear from a man, but he has clearly been developing his natural, born gift to the fullest, and dared to follow his dream. That is a courageous thing to do; not that he had very much to fear I think, taking his ability as a singer into account. Thanks for introducing me to him 🙂 Much love from Norway ♥♥♥♥♥

His voice is unique because it never split as he became a teen it stayed the way it was. For this he suffered a lot of bullying from everyone. It was a live take but whoever compiled the video spliced in snippets of him in other performances from the first to present, even the moments of his tears. @@AleksReacts Well, it's not that I don't like it, he sings beautifully and it's a beautiful song... I've heard Charly before, I've read his story, he's a great artist and I wish him all the best, but he doesn't do anything for me... same as Dimash... When it comes to male singers I am very picky, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Henning May and Cakra Khan, that's about it, add Robert Plant (who is kind of an exception because all of the others have deep and somewhat "gravelly" voices...)... Of course, as I'm very curios I listened to many many more, and enjoyed some really, but the ones I mentioned are the only ones I go back to repeatedly and have listened to for decades (Chakra Khan is the only one who's relatively new to me, discovered him a few years ago on a reaction channel...). Ren is also very fascinating and actually a good singer, but it's not his voice in the first place that gets me... But for me, most male singers are only worth listening to when duetting with a great female vocalist... difficult in this case maybe, would be interesting to see and hear him teamed up with Diana...

Thank you so much, Kiddo! That is exactly what I was interested in! Your honest opinion! ❤️❤️❤️ You see, I do value your input, and it reminded me of our Leonard Cohen conversation from way back. The more I learn about you, I see we have different tastes but overlapping occasionally. At least we both love Henning May, AJ, and Diana. Hope I'll find someone else who'll fit the bill for both of us, and yes, Ray will show up again, and so will AMK. Love to Bavaria and thanks for the wonderful reception today in live chat! ❤️❤️❤️

@ Over the years I've developed the habit of rather not saying anything in case I don't have something really positive to say or give some facts or background. This was the case here, I don't want to offend any fans... but as you asked... btw. speaking of duets:
      - Diana Ankudinova & Brandon Stone "The Day You"
      - Lara Fabian & Johnny Halliday "Requiem pour un fou"
      - Katrina Velarde & Kristina Madrigal "When You Believe" (two ladies in this case)
      ...

@@Hundhammer Strangely enough, I’m like you : I strongly prefer female singers over male singers, with, of course, a few exceptions, but they’re rare. My first exception is boybands over girlbands (yes to Forestella, no to 4th Impact). The second is male sopranos, specifically singers like Zhou Shen, Dimash, Pitta, Marcelito, Gao Tian He, Huo Zun, Li Yu Gang, etc. The third concerns some male singers with a "normal vocal range" such as Liu Huan, A Yun Ga or Fei Yu Qing. But in this case, they are truly rare, and the ones you mentioned definitely aren’t among them, except maybe Tom Waits, whom I listened to two or three times about thirty years ago. Other than that, only female singers truly move me.
In the unlikely event that you'd like to hear Zhou Shen in good female company, most of his duets are with women, like Years with Huang Qi Shan, Upwards to the Moon and Free Walking Flower with Sa Ding Ding, Ulaanbaatar with Anda Union, Song of Laughter with Gong Lin Na, Listen with Tan Wei Wei, Flowers All the Way with Angela Zhang, or The Story of a Small Town with Teresa Teng... even though the latter has been dead for thirty years. But nowadays, even babies and the dead can sing.

Thank you as well for your reply!
Oh, no it doesn't come across as intrusive at all. I understood what you meant, but it really did help me in this instance. Wouldn't be fair to tell you otherwise, as it wouldn't be true. I asked others, but I have to ask you as it seems I'll get an honest reply: did I manage to show my respect correctly when I tried to pronounce his name and the name of the song during the intro?

    • @xchuanShen
      @xchuanShen 7 дней назад +2

@ In my view, your pronunciation isn’t an issue at all-it’s perfectly understandable. Non-native speakers do face challenges with accurate Chinese tones, but rest assured, 99.99% of Chinese people won’t feel offended or annoyed. When you make an effort to pronounce someone’s name or a song title in Chinese, that gesture itself is a sign of respect.

It was meant as a sign of respect. Very glad to hear that I didn't entirely botch it and that it is taken as such. Kind regards and a big thank you for setting me at ease! ❤️❤️❤️
