    🎤 Laurie Anderson - O Superman Lyrics:
    [Intro]
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha…
    [Verse]
    O Superman
    O Judge
    O Mom and Dad
    Mom and Dad
Ah, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
    O Superman
    O Judge
    O Mom and Dad
    Mom and Dad
Ah, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Hi, I'm not home right now
But if you want to leave a message
Just start talking at the sound of the tone
    Ah, ah
    Ah, ah, ah, ah
Hello? This is your mother, are you there?
    Are you coming home?
    Ah, ah, ah
    Hello? Is anybody home?
Well, you don't know me, but I know you
And I've got a message to give to you
    Here come the planes
So you better get ready, ready to go
You can come as you are, but pay as you go, pay as you go
    Ah, ah ah ah ah
And I said: okay, who is this really? And the voice said:
This is the hand, the hand that takes
This is the hand, the hand that takes
This is the hand, the hand that takes
    Here come the planes
They're American planes, made in America
    Smoking or non-smoking?
    Ah, ah
    Ah, ah ah ah
And the voice said: Neither snow nor rain nor gloom of night
Shall stay these couriers from the swift completion
    Of their appointed rounds
    [Bridge]
'Cause when love is gone, there's always justice
And when justice is gone, there's always force
And when force is gone, there's always Mom. Hi Mom!
    Ah, ah
    Ah, ah ah ah
So hold me, Mom, in your long arms
So hold me, Mom, in your long arms
In your automatic arms, your electronic arms
    In your arms
So hold me, Mom, in your long arms
Your petrochemical arms, your military arms
    In your electronic arms

Like they’ve created a second line of control through our parents generations social conditioning foremost, what parents en masse offer their children up to die for wars not needing to be fought in many cases, .. and secondly alludes to the broken being sent home wrecks to the mothers… and thirdly alludes to the all seeing eye of the gvt, it’s menacing and terrifyingly methodical, firm, inescapable, synthetic machine mother 😢 I love this piece of art so damn much ❤

this song was written after the US sent military aircraft into iran in an attempt to recover hostages, but several of the helicopters crashed in the desert and the hostages weren't recovered for another 270 days.
its sort of a cynical commentary on how we idolize our military power, but it doesn't really solve the problems it attempts to fix, it just exists for its own sake. the "mom and dad" in this song are the leadership claiming they can make everything right, but their methods of doing so are sinister and inhumane: automatic arms, petrochemical arms, military arms. the hand that takes. "if not justice, there's always force."
notice also how the singing voice joins the background "ha ha ha ha" at some points, not in a joyful way, but in an almost weary way; holding a superficial cheer that seems as if it is laughing **at** the claims the voice on the phone is making.

1:50 That line. God that line. It's so much. It's seeing pictures of your ancestors, it's holding an antique, it's learning about someone history that you can relate to. It's walking through a doorway in your childhood home and seeing the little mark where mom measured your height. Looking down at where you were. So tiny, sweet, curious and scared. Realizing how far you've come from that little child and wondering what you would say to them now.

The monotonous laughter in the background that is always so prominent and yet also fades away, and the calm singing juxtaposed with the eerie lyrics and subject. I always took the “there’s always mom” line as smth sinister, and felt that my complicated feelings for my mother had been validated. Like when a parent claims theyre doing everything for your own good, but you know its hurting you more than helping. “I’m gonna use love to keep you here with me under my care and control, and if I can’t use love I’ll use justice (try to reason), and if I can’t do that I’ll use force, and even if I can’t do that I’ll still always be here and be a part of you because I’m your Mother”. Thats also the feeling i get from the call, like an overbearing mother who won’t stand to leave her child alone and the child has had enough of it. You’re never gonna outgrow mom (shes not gonna let you leave).

I took the "there's always mom" thing as the military being seen as all-powerful and all-protecting (how kids see mum) and also that it's a cliche that scared/dying adults (such as soldiers on a battlefield) when they have nothing they can do to change their fate, will sometimes irrationally call for their mother.

This song feels like trauma. When you realize that you are broken, that one event still etched in your mind, a ghost that you cannot escape. You cannot be 'normal'; you will always be in pieces, put together roughly because, at that time, that was your only way to survive. Yes, you can heal, but somewhere deep in your soul, you know there will always be traces. Even when everybody tells you there is nothing, you still see it.
    Yes, this feels like trauma.

Before Kanye and T-Pain, there was Laurie Anderson. The song was released in 1981 as part of her album "Big Science." Anderson was experimenting with different forms of art, blending spoken word performance with electronic music. "O Superman" became one of her most well-known and influential works.
The song was partly inspired by Anderson's interest in technology, communication, and the political climate of the time, particularly during the Cold War era. The lyrics touch on themes of power, authority, and the influence of media and technology on society. Anderson's use of the vocoder, a device that distorts and manipulates the human voice, adds to the otherworldly and haunting quality of the song.
Overall, "O Superman" can be seen as a reflection of the anxieties and uncertainties of the modern world, as well as a commentary on the ways in which technology shapes our lives and perceptions.

    • @Gemma_UK
      @Gemma_UK 4 месяца назад

Also, the song lyrics are open to interpretation, and listeners may find parallels or connections to various political and social events of the time.
Some have interpreted the song's themes of power, authority, and communication as commentary on broader political issues, including the geopolitical tensions surrounding the Iranian Hostage Crisis. However, Anderson herself has not explicitly stated that the song is about the Iranian hostages.

I just experienced something traumatic and my Mom was with me at that time. We held close, well, I held her so close in fear that she might slip away from me. At some point before that, I hated her because I believed she caused some of my own other issues. But now, I’m just glad that she’s safe. We got home safe. And to those other comments that say it sounds like trauma, I agree, it does. This song calmed me down somehow and helped me process what happened. So yeah, I think it can be eerie but it can also be comforting.

This song made me cry over the loss of my house. I wanted to join my family in the woodwork of the floors. A smell I loved and knew all too well but can never get back even if I float through dozens of shelters. My home was my family. My family made it home.

this song sounds so uncomfortable yet comforting at the same time, it makes me feel like I’m dying but at the same time like I’ve never been more alive, It sounds like death and life, the beginning and the end, almost like I’m reliving my life like this is what would play as my life flashes before my eyes, like I know going to die but that comforts me in a strange way.

listening to this enough, it starts to feel like a close friend. this song feels like it cares. more than most have. this song loves me. the soul in it is speaking to me. and although the world it is in is strange, and when it brings me in I recognize nothing, deep down it's something i've always known. it's a part of me. the soul is mine. and I am not yet free, but when I am I will enter its embrace. and it will love me.

This song creeps me out...but in a good, nostalgic way? Like the whole, 'hi! Its your mother' distoreted type voice....it makes me feel way too weird, yet somehow its comforting??? Also with the ha ha ha in the background...

My mom just texted me randomly while I was reading these lyrics and I am terrified. I feel like someone knows something I don’t. I feel like something is happening. I don’t know what but I feel scared. I don’t know what I’m scared of. I don’t know what’s happening. I feel haunted. I feel like something I can’t even explain.

This song is so weird...I first heard it from IDKSterling's shorts and was curious.
Holy smokes, I will remember this song forever. Reading the comments as well makes the lyrics feel a lot more impactful.

this song makes me feel disturbed in a comforting way. i can stop listening but i know i’ll feel much better if i did. it scares the crap out of me and makes me paranoid but i know if i turn it off the lack of noise will make the fear worse, so i play it on repeat to save me from the scary darkness of my own thoughts. my favorite and least favorite song
