this song was written after the US sent military aircraft into iran in an attempt to recover hostages, but several of the helicopters crashed in the desert and the hostages weren't recovered for another 270 days.
its sort of a cynical commentary on how we idolize our military power, but it doesn't really solve the problems it attempts to fix, it just exists for its own sake. the "mom and dad" in this song are the leadership claiming they can make everything right, but their methods of doing so are sinister and inhumane: automatic arms, petrochemical arms, military arms. the hand that takes. "if not justice, there's always force."

Realizing how far you've come from that little child and wondering what you would say to them now.
The monotonous laughter in the background that is always so prominent and yet also fades away, and the calm singing juxtaposed with the eerie lyrics and subject. I can’t help but compare it the feeling of something being so personal yet holding their air of fuzziness to it- like knowing something is wrong but mot being able to truly digest that fact.

Basically, Carter ordered the operation to rescue 52 embassy staff held hostage in Iran. Eight copters were sent to the first point, 5 arrived operational. The operation was aborted, and as they were withdrawing one helicopter crashed into a transport craft that killed 8 servicemen
I believe it took another 120 days to get the hostages rescued

I'm not home right now, but if you wanna leave a message, just start talking after the tone!" our house had been burnt down, and she had sadly died from the smoke :(((((

You cannot be 'normal'; you will always be in pieces, put together roughly because, at that time, that was your only way to survive. Yes, you can heal, but somewhere deep in your soul, you know there will always be traces. Even when everybody tells you there is nothing, you still see it.

I just experienced something traumatic and my Mom was with me at that time. We held close, well, I held her so close in fear that she might slip away from me. At some point before that, I hated her because I believed she caused some of my own other issues. But now, I’m just glad that she’s safe. We got home safe. And to those other comments that say it sounds like trauma, I agree, it does. This song calmed me down somehow and helped me process what happened. So yeah, I think it can be eerie but it can also be comforting.

i found this song scary but when i kept listening to it i slowly started to enjoy it, it reminded me a lot of my past. and it felt calming.
listening to this song was such a journey i feel like i’d just been hypnotized
for me it sounds like the realization that every day you wake up at the exact same time go to work/school eat at the same hours might even be the same food every time then go to sleep only to then wake up for the same thing in an endless loop that will continue for ever until one day you wake up to realize that and then you feel how the nostalgia washes over you and you suddenly remember your childhood and you drown in the moment only to suddenly remember that you need to continue this endless circle to survive so you fall into depression knowing nothing will be the same again.
This song reminds me of the time I found out a relative I couldve met went missing during the Vietnam war. And my Meme saw him once and then never again. He was around 18. This song reminds me of my mom before she got back on drugs her voice sounding diffrent and her behavior starts becoming friendly to lead you into a source of feeling safe fo only hurt you and tear you down and cut you with her words.
