BJJ would really humble you real quick. I remember when I first started I thought my powerlifting background would make me good. it did... for a bit until It longer did. I got humbled real quick by a much smaller skinnier teenager. so for those who is starting out on BJJ, leave your ego out the door. because no matter how good you think you are, there is still someone out there who is better than you and would certainly put you in your place.
Been following BJJ at a Gracie Jiu Jitsu CTC. Been there for about 2 1/2 years and I love it! I also actively practice boxing and wrestled for 4 years. Great video!
Comp classes are great but i dont think they are necessary. It all depends on natural talent and what you do outside of the gym. Are studying new enties and techniques? Supplementary cardio? I personally hated a gyms whos culture it is to make you do some sort of training regiment before they "allow" you to compete. Unless the gym is paying my fees, ill compete as ai see fit. If you dont want me to rep the gym, thats fine but you wont tell me what i can or cant do with my own money.
Most modern people are starved for touch and comradery. If it didn't provide a super high risk for permanent joint destruction I would get into it. I'm 43 and my knees already hurt, not willing to acclerate that for fun. Rokas had his leg destroyed in a white belt open mat session by an ego maniac busting out a scissor takedown. I'm gonna start looking for a muay thai or kickboxing class instead. Sadly low on snuggles, but safer.
Imo beginners don't have to be "humble" or anything. It's the job of the coaches and the experienced people to tell the new guys when they're going too hard or doing something dangerous. I also like it to go against super motivated beginners before they've been calmed down by the coaches to see how I'd do against an aggressive untrained person.
Don't wear a sweatshirt after class and the go shower and then put that same sweat shirt on to do some outside yard work later that day or the next. The heebeegeebies will still be active and able to spread to your nice clean skin. Ringworm and Staph can be a Pita to stamp out at a gym or even in your home if you don't treat it early and with extreme prejudice.
