This was interesting. I have Cherokee and Creek ancestry. I live in middle NC. On my maternal side were the Sizemore family dating back to 1648. They intermarried with the Cherokee and Creek tribes. During the Trail of Tears, the Sizemore’s helped to hide the Cherokee people in the NC mountains. They would stack up sticks in high piles to help the natives follow the trail to safety. The Cherokee called them “The Stick People”. This can be googled.

I just found my husbands and daughters lineage into the Cherokee through the McDaniels. Apparently they intermarried early on into the deer clan. My sister in law is also Cherokee…her ancestors married into Scottish lines also. I’m wondering how common this was??

Thank you so much for this information, I have some Cherokee ancestry. I've always admired the Cherokee people who suffered so much, and the stories about how the Eastern Cherokees managed to escape the removal. I'd heard of the Cherokee and his sons being executed so that the others could stay, and of the white man buying land in North Carolina so the Cherokees could seek refuge there. You have cleared up these old stories I had heard.

If my family wasn’t American Indian on the census’s they were counted as Mulatto. Melungeons were much fewer & further inbetween & only resided in very few counties so melungeon ancestry isn’t this oh so common thing white southerners who crave culture claim it to be
