    80% of American weapons were coming from France or was bought with French money. The siege of Yorktown that ended the war in N.America theater was an idea of the French General Comte de Rochambeau. The French navy matched the RN and made British reinforcement impossible. France had the most decisive impact in the success of the American revolutionnary war

      skiteufr Spain contributed greatly to the American Colonies. The facts are irrefutable, no matter the motives or politics. Again France would never have aided the Americans without Spain's backing. Happy Fourth of July to you!

    • @skiteufr
      @skiteufr 9 лет назад +11

      michael cristian France's motives were known. To get revenge for the loss of Canada 15 years before and stripping Britain from its oldest and most profitable colony, the US and reasserting her role of dominant European power. And also some French nobles went there becaue they had sympathies about the enlightments. I agree with you that Spain's achievement was great, but militarily the French spearheaded the operations, and often assisted the Spanish in theirs, most notably in Europe, as the war was worldwide for us, Europeans. I agree that the alliance, through the Bourbon family compact was an important factor to defeat the British, this alliance often proved usefull, but I do not agree saying France would have never aided the Americans without Spain.
      France started to provide ammos and supplies to the Americans from 1776 with Latouche Tréville or guns with de Valliere. At this time, Spain was just starting to have its first negociations with the Americans. France entered formally into war the first, in 1778, as the French were prepared (the biggest job was upgrading the navy) and it was even known they were willing to go to war alone if necessary as Louis XVI received reports of the British planning to strike the Americans harshly and the French west indies. Then France was officially the first ally of the USA, and Spain entered the war a year later in 1779. So yes France would have joined the hostilities no matter what, and was the first ally to join and provided decisive military results.

    • @michaelcristiancrow
      @michaelcristiancrow 9 лет назад +2

      skiteufr That is false. France needed Spain and perhaps vise versa. Spain's help for the American colonists was not late and most importantly under no circumstance negligible, if Spain did not help France and the American colonists, the British would have surely defeated the Independence movement of the thirteen colonies. Spain was asked by the king of France to form an alliance against Great Britain. The French king was very aware that he needed Spain and the Spanish colonies to help them defeat Great Britain. Spain's colonies of Mexico, Cuba, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic all helped tremendously in sending soldiers, sailors, war materials as well as a great deal of monetary help for the cause of the American Revolution.
      Years before Spain declared war on Great Britain in 1779, the great Spanish General Bernardo De Galvez of Spain were providing the American colonists along the entire length of the Mississippi River from the Gulf of Mexico to as far north as Canada with food, medicine, guns/cannons, gunpowder, uniforms and money. Bernardo de Galvez defeated the British all along the Mississippi River at various British forts; pushing the British out of the lower half of the North American continent. The Battle of Pensacola was one of the most hard fought important battles of the American Revolution and it was de Galvez who defeated the British forces at the Battle of Pensacola. Therefore, with these Spanish victories, the British were prevented from attacking the American colonists from using the western and southern fronts of North America as a staging ground to attack the thirteen colonies. So what if France's motives were known? Both Spain & France had their own reasons as nations to fight the British. When France and Spain joined in the war, it was not out of overwhelming support for the interests of the Americans but out of self-interest against Britain. Ok, so both are guilty in their selfish motives. All politics. Doesn't really matter. Either way, the American colonists benifited! Either way, it was all good for the American colonists. If France had joined the war without Spain, France would have lost. They needed each other. Both were unwilling to openly show their support at first. Each Bourbon country pitched in a Million livres to start the ficticious business called the Roderigue Hortalez and Company to show their support for the colonial rebels...in secret! Really brave huh? But again, that's just politics! Gee, France asked for little? Yeah, too bad, it made France broke & in huge debt.

Alas, that was more than 50 years ago, and I have not been back to France. When I was there, there was still a lot of bomb damage fron the war, so I probably would not recognize it today. God, how time flies.

    • @davidspeaks5879
      @davidspeaks5879 8 лет назад +12

      +RaccoonMoustache I know this is a old comment.... But.... Are you kidding? You must be? Sure France gets a bad rep in the US regarding warfare, then again, and I'll admit it - the American school system is less focused on learning about other countries, but more about local (depending on the state), America's textbook version of WW2 and American pioneer culture (at least it was when I was in school). Besides this unfortunate fact, however - France is a typical European American tourist choice and most European American women love France for various fashion and food choices. If anything, I've noticed French leave really nasty comments about Americans and America - so if there is any bashing, it is probably not anything to take personal, but to those French whom are attacking Americans in their mean spirited speech. Though, like I said before - European Americans really do like France and wish it the best, believe me. I'm of an American of Scottish-German descent myself, but I consider the French brothers, like I do of all Europeans wherever they might live, whether they like me for being American or not - is irrelevant to me, as I will like them anyway. :)

    When France recovered Louisiana a few years later, we even sold it to USA with a very low price.
    French help was sincere. French wanted of course to kick some English butts in America, but they were also very enthusiastic about american ideals.

    @spunker99, on the contrary, France has participated and won more wars than Britain. France won a large majority of the Italian wars in the 16th century, but lost in the end. In the time of Louis XIV and Napoleon I, France won numerous coaltions. The French also won most of the conflicts in the middle ages against the English and retaken their lands. And had more success fending off the vikings.
    The 1870 war, and the fall of France in 1940 does not discount 1500 years of military glory.

    The british themseleves considered that their main enemies in the last campagin of the American Independence War had been the french. From Wikipedia (Yorktown siege): "Cornwallis refused to meet formally with Washington, and also refused to come to the ceremony of surrender, claiming illness. Instead, Brigadier General Charles O'Hara presented the sword of surrender to Rochambeau. Rochambeau shook his head and pointed to Washington."

    They paid homage also when they were kings of England,because they were still vassal of the French kings for their possessions in France (Normandy, Anjou...).
    When they refused to pay, kings of France usually took their territories by force, like Philippe Augustus at Bouvines (1214) or Saint Louis at Taillebourg (1242).

    Fortunately there are still people here -like you- who know or learn about our common history ! The saddest part is that I am sure Mitt Romney was well aware of US and french history but he chose to put aside historical truth when it suits his communication. It shows how important is our people historical knowledge as a guarantor of truth -and peace- and how sad politics has become! sorry for the syntax, peace from france!

    It had also attacked Malta , Menorca won (which was the great British naval base in the Mediterranean, Malta before ) , besieging Gibraltar was on the verge of falling . The France encircled the British West Indies , and maneuvered for months 60,000 men in Britain, ready to land in Britain virtually emptied of troops . The French ships were cruising , flags flying , off Southampton , causing panic on the London Stock

    Remember one thing at this Time in history, England only have ennemies, it was not just the French.
    Spain, Netherland, Austria, Prussia were France allies, it was a time when england tried to rule the entire world, and took contrôle of all the atlantic ocean, and locked Mediterranean sea in Gibraltar it's not a joke.
    They deserved a little butt kick to remind them that they were not invincible.

    Comme toujours le choix des images, de la musique, la réalisation et les textes sont parfaits. Bravo et merci.
    Il aurait été amusant d'ajouter qu'O'Hara présenta l'épée de Cornwallis à Rochambeau qui la refusera pour permettre à Washington de l'accepter. Un très beau geste de chevalerie de sa part. Mais la vidéo est déjà très forte sur ce thème là : ).

    Many Americans talk about France and say we are even for WW2. This is ignorance and stubbornness. But many Americans understand history and consider France a great friend. I know that when the time comes we as citizens of our respective nations will fight together and defeat tyranny. Forget what our leaders say or do. We as the people know who our friends are. "Liberty will reign in America!"~John Adams

    @xxAdelineFcexx, The last movie Ridley Scott made was "Robin Hood" and it was just full of propaganda at the end, there was never a French invasion in the late 12th century.

    I didn't say that only english soldiers were embarked (175.000 french above 340.000 allied troops embarked) but:
    80.000 french soldiers called les "sacrifiés" (sacrified) have stopped 7 german division in calais for 4 days allowing the dynamo operation to succeed.
    Sir Winston Churchill said later:
    We left thousands of our French friends behind. It was their sacrifice.... that allowed so many to be taken off the beaches."

    I use google translation for what follows, be kind:
    We helped you against the invading English, for democracy. We built the Statue of Liberty to celebrate our agreement and our friendship. You have helped us against Nazism. You are always welcome in France, on behalf of our friendship, I salute you American people.

    LaFayette is still honored today.My county is named after HIM.Their were many other foreigners that helped the US for freedom that are now forgotten.Like Count Casimir Polaski of Poland. He led the Siege of Savannah, Georgia (the state I live in) and was killed.He died for another man's country.Baron Van Steuben trained the Continental Army's cannon regiments for better accuracy.

    @dammo1993, the last time England attempted to conquer France was during the Hundred Years War, and it soon ended in a bloodbath for the English after a series of French victories at Patay, Formigny, and Castillon. England never conquered France nor any other country in history. France and England both won against each other a relatively equal amount of conflicts and wars.

    About Napoleon in the age that he lived there was no combustion engines, trains, trucks etc so the mobilization of armies were much more slow thus the duration of wars had a tendence to be greater. So beat in 3 weeks Russia and Austria in this conditions is a huge feat :)
