  • Quire Cleveland under Artistic Director Ross W. Duffin, singing at Historic St. Peter's Church in downtown Cleveland, April 6, 2014.
Published in The Singing Master's Assistant, this presents a biblical love lyric from the Song of Songs (Solomon 2:1-8,10-11) in a lively and highly varied setting. There is colorful word painting ("skipping," "rise up"), frequent changes of meter, and places where the harmony is incomplete by European standards, giving it a kind of primitive quality. But the feeling is honest and joyful and the music itself is completely infectious.

I was going to buy a hibiscus tree as a birthday present for a friend, and another friend told me, instead of a hibiscus, I should buy a Rose of Sharon tree. It made me remember this song from years ago. You all have made me very happy this morning. Cheers from Texas.

Billings was, besides being a Singing School Master, a tanner in Boston. We some times sing this Shape Note. That qualifies as work. If we do well, it is good.

Very, very nice performance. Makes me jealous. I only wish I had had the opportunity to sing Billings pieces more than once in my 44-year sojourn as a chorister.

Bravo! So gorgeous. I sang this at Symphony Hall Boston in 1976 (the year I graduated HS) as part of the Northeast District Choir. It's amazing how music buries itself in deep. I could still sing along in parts with the basses, although there's a good chance I've heard it again somewhere along the line.

The only place we can make a pig of ourselves at the banquet and enjoy the wine cellar without worrying about not being too polite.

This is lovely! I found it by accident as I was looking for the verse “I am the rise of Sharon, lily of the valley” I am named Sharon and I recently had a tattoo with both those flowers. This was lovely addition to my experience, especially the last line “the rain is over and gone” if that’s what it said 😅 thank you 🙏🏼

I sang under Weston Noble for two years-- an opportunity that changes one for life. This music-- and it's fine performance are perfectly in line with a fundamental mantra Weston taught-- that All Music Must Dance. Congrats to all the members of QuireCleveland for their artisty.

There are Italian Madrigals, English Madrigals, and thanks to this composer, American Madrigals.
Although the English influence is obvious, there is a rustic positivity to this music that is manifestly non-European, and check the composition date:
The Declaration of Independence was two years or so in the past, making Billings, arguably, the first major AMERICAN composer.
Compare his own dates (1746-1800) with those of his European contemporary, W. A. Mozart (1756-1791):
Communications media being what they were in the 18th Century (other than letters, nonexistent) Billings wrote much of his own remarkable music almost completely devoid of any influence by that other, even more remarkable composer.

Yes, I think that Billings and his contemporaries have had a big influence on American music, I think that a number of 20th century American composers were channeling those broad and naive muscular New England textures. The only thing that I'd say is that the European music to compare this with is anthems and motets etc rather than madrigals. This reminds me of Handel more than anything else.

I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys.
As the lily among thorns, so is my love among the daughters.
As the apple tree among the trees of the wood,
so is my beloved among the sons.
I sat down under his shadow with great delight,
and his fruit was sweet to my taste.
He brought me to the banqueting house,
his banner over me was love.
Stay me with flagons, comfort me with apples:
for I am sick of love.
I charge you, O ye daughters of Jerusalem,
by the roes, and by the hinds of the field,
that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, till he please.
The voice of my beloved! behold, he cometh
    leaping upon the mountains,
    skipping upon the hills.
My beloved spake, and said unto me,
Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.
For, lo, the winter is past,
the rain is over and gone.

Thanks, Quire! An excellent uplifting experience; good HD 2 cameras & mics. Please do a whole DVD of selected Billings' works, like His Majestie's Clerkes did on CD. Your sound is crisp, lively, sincere - resonant. I like your rolled r's.
