      I went to Las Vegas and got to try In-n-Out and it was sooooooo good. So far none in Florida. I even bought another one before getting on the plane to go home. I went there to see Stevie Wonder and got to see Hoover Dam so as far as I'm concerned I got to experience some of the greatest wonders of the world including In-N-Out! Here’s the scoop on Gyros (Greek speaker here):
    Eva is the closest; though she shifts a bit. :-) If you aren’t a Greek speaker or trying to sound just like one, “Y” is good enough.
    If you want the arcane details, read on:
    Γύρος gets transliterated as “Gyros.” But transliterations are usually misleading. The letter Γ (gamma) in modern Greek has two different sounds. Before a, o and u sounds, it’s a soft (guttural) G sound. Before the e and i sounds (eh/ee), it becomes a Y, but it’s like…a Y that’s trying to be G but doesn’t quite make it, or a G where the back of the tongue doesn’t quite contact the palate completely.
    The people pronouncing it “khiros” were probably Spanish speakers doing what they do with a G in that position. But “khiros” in Greek can mean two things, depending on how you spell it: χήρος - widower, or χοίρος - pig. :-)

    • @chemistryofquestionablequa6252
      @chemistryofquestionablequa6252 2 года назад

      Lol, probably best not to pronounce it the Spanish way then.

    • @jaycee330
      @jaycee330 3 месяца назад

      It would similar to "ll" in Spanish, if you were to say "LLiros", A voiced palatal fricative. The Spanish word "sayo" has the sound. And, "gyros" is singular and plural in Greek, for you non-speakers. For Italians, "figlio" has the sound.

    i'm watching this a year later and having lived in southern california all my life, it's nice to see someone present the area in a pleasant light... even though we suffer May Gray and June Gloom. thankfully, i'm far enough east to see the clouds you live under and hope i don't run out of sunscreen at the same time. what kills me about this clip is at the end where Eva says the In-N-Out burger tastes just like McDonalds which i find utterly and completely hilarious. i was stationed in Sicily back in the 80's when Mickey D's opened their first restaurant in Rome and the Italians WERE NOT HAPPY about it. to protest, the local restaurants set up tables out front and served free pasta to keep people from patronizing McDonalds. i've been a vegetarian for 35 years now but i still remember In-N-Out burgers were WAY better than any dry cooked from frozen meat patty McDonalds ever produced. the fact Eva can compare the two is a testament of the food culture lost in Italy.
    then again, the food i ate in Sicily was bland at first... it wasn't until i stopped eating the food in the chow hall and focused solely on local eateries that i could appreciate the subtle but complex flavors. never once did i see a "deep dish" pizza while there. all pizzas were 10"s, thin crust and fit on the plate. peas, hot dog slices and eggs weren't my toppings of choice but that's for another video. CIAO! lol

    I am surprised you did not take Eva to Philippes across from Union Station. Their meats and stews are killer, sandwiches are stellar and house made mustard is out of this world. Coffee is now 15 cents. I used to ride Surfliner from Santa Barbara to LA just for lunch there.

    Me, being Italian-American born and raised in California, would have marched Eva straight to a McD’s and made her try them together to show how wild it is that she thinks In n’ Out is the same (but also, you didn’t get it animal style?! No wonder she didn’t care for it!)

    • @MrChristian

      I was thinking something similar. Both sandwiches need to be seen side by side and then eaten. It will then become obvious to her or anyone. With that said, the first time I had one, I wasn’t necessarily blown away. It was love at second try. Same with Chick-fil-A

      @@MrChristian Oh, interesting. It was definitely love at first bite for me. Their fries are not great but when they’re animal style I love them. I appreciate the buying guide. Btw In-N-Out is definitely the king of the fast food burgers but it is in the same league as McDonald’s, Burger King, and Carl’s Jr. so I can see why Ava is confusing it with McDonald’s. I feel that comparing it with Shake shack or five guys is just not fair because they are in completely different leagues.

      You might be right because Eva has a relatively unbiased opinion but I'd need it explained to me. Unlike McDonalds, a default In-N-Out burger has lettuce, tomatoes, not-dehydrated onion, their own (not quite exactly 1000 island) sauce, and doesn't have extra sweetener pumped into every ingredient, even the meat. Not a McDiabetes burger to me at all.

    Great video Eva and Harper!
    Video request here, must do :):
    an "Italian tries popular fast food burgers"
    why not a blind taste of bunch of burgers: In and Out, McD, Wendy's , Five Guys, etc. Maybe you both should do it and score them. McD has an absolutely recognizable taste that nobody would be able to miss. Personally I would say 7/10. In and out 8/10.
    Then see if Eva can tell the difference between In and Out's and the rest...come on, there is no way anyone could compare the two. I am not saying In and Out is the best, still it is like comparing a Toyota Corolla (McD) to a BMW. Yes (In and out) is not a Ferrari, but it is not a cheap Toyota (McD).

And, no pickle, because it's pure salt, and extra onions and ketchup, and then they are delicious.

    nagaimo is a japanese mountain yam. it's known for its mucilaginous quality. the yam itself is often eaten raw (chopped into matchsticks and tossed with a dash of soy sauce and vinegar) or grated and served on rice with soy and green onions. It is also grated into okonomiyaki batter to prevent the pancake from developing a doughy texture. the flavor is somewhat reminiscent of jicama but the texture is lighter and snappy like an asian pear.

In addition, Los Angeles is literally translated as the "City of Angeles" because the fog would roll in from the coast and blanket the city. The angels would be hovering over the city. So if you don't want fog, visit late summer or in the winter.
