Joni is 77 now and no longer tours and hardly plays music for performance. She sings a little from time to time but has had health problems as she ages and also devotes a lot more time to her painting. Joni is a fabulous artist and musician, singer-songwriter and I love her work very much.
Joni is a Genius. It will take you a lifetime to discover her absolute beauty. Incredible Artist, Musician, Songwriter and Painter. A Treasure to the World. 🌎 🌍.
My generation adored Joni Mitchell and I'm delighted that you've discovered her, If you've not yet heard it, may I respectfully suggest her musical tribute to the Woodstock music and art festival, entitled, Woodstock.
you said it Harry! She is intoxicated by whoever it is she is singing about! She is not only intoxicated but she knows this is the one she is at once drunk and grounded at the same. time
Yep, she's playing a dulcimer. She is a multi-instrumentalist, has a voice that's a beautiful instrument itself, and is one of the most talented songwriters ever. Please explore more of her work. You won't be disappointed! ❤
You are very insightful, this is about her relationship with Leonard Cohen, and the line about, "I met a woman who had a mouth like yours," is what Leonard's mother told Joni. So you nailed it.
I did think of Leonard their early romance, and her later dismissal of his "boudoir poet" writing. Pretty rough, but no doubt he was always bouncing between bitter and sweet. Still missing Leonard the enigmatic seeker.
Prince was a huge Joni fan. Attending one of her concerts very early. He plays this on a tribute album too. This song has been covered many times. I like Diana Krall’s version. And just announced today, Joni will be receiving a Kennedy Center honor. The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts today announced its 44th lifetime achievement award winners. They are: Motown founder Berry Gordy, opera star Justino Díaz, singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, entertainer Bette Midler and television impresario Lorne Michaels, who created Saturday Night Live.
Diana Krall is great, I have a lot of her CDs and she's married to Elvis Costello. Thanks for posting this information, I'm sure there will be some artists on hand to sing some of her songs. Such an incredible catalog of songs, my favorite female artist.
You're right. I have been listening to this song for decades and I always thought it was about undying devotion. Now I think it is about ambivalence, boredom and resignation.
This is one of my 2 or 3 favorite songs by anyone, any time. I never heard it as a song about an abusive partner, just a challenging one. The writers voice in this is not that of a victim. It's the voice of a woman who knows she has her hands full but is at peace with it.
"Help Me," "Free Man in Paris," and "You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio" are all excellent. "Coyote" is too, but there I recommend detouring into The Last Waltz and diving further into the Band from there. Also: "Raised on Robbery" will kick your ass.
Joni recorded a string of must-own masterwork albums from "Clouds" to "Hejira". This album is held up by many as her best, not quite there for me but still excellent. This song and 'River' get a lot of attention but my favorite track on the album is 'This Flight Tonight'. Nazareth covered it as a single. My favorite album is "For the Roses" which came right after "Blue" with even better singing and fuller arrangements but still confessional songs. Some cut right to my heart, the closing track is a tribute to the deaf Beethoven. She no longer records or tours but there are filmed concerts you can watch. That's what I like about recordings, they can make an artist immortal.
Prince not only loves this song he also covered it on a Joni tribute album. Originally from album Blue still there after 50 years as am all time classic. This is spooky I jus shared he Prince version to a friend who loves this song just a few minutes ago
One of the greatest artists of all time. Just a poet and talented musician with few peers. Like the Beatles Joni is on her own pedestal I have a quite cry with this song every time, for its sheer beauty. Check out Anna Moura’s version who is. Portuguese Fado singer. Beautiful as well
As others are mentioning, the instrument she is playing is an Appalachian dulcimer which is played across the lap. She is accompanied by James Taylor on guitar (whom she once had romanced). As i understand it, she had written this song to/for Leonard Cohen. His line to her: "I am as constant as the Northern Star - - -" was a line from Shakespeare. "Constantly in the darkness" was her very clever retort. The woman she met who had a mouth like his, was his mother (what a poetic way to name her) who knew his lies, his devels, his deeds. She warned Joni: "be prepared to bleed". (Wow, thanks, Mom). Still, love will not be advised. He was in her blood like holy wine. What an incredible poet. Thanks for this. I would love if you could react to RIVER, also on this album.
I agree-- did you know doing California BBC that she a bad cold --even with a bad cold she is sensational! I saw her at Atlantic City 1969 just a couple of weeks before Woodstock.
Love this tune. Excellent choice. Voice of an angel. Lyrics of poet! Her meaning is so often multiple, which gives her songs so much more depth. She is brilliant. (note: American educator Rick Beato does a wonderful review of her song 'Amelia', months later he has dinner with her....yes, she loved his comments)
Hello Harri, Great Video. I have listened to this song many times, and what I take from it is that she is totally infatuated with this man, and she is preared to take him with all of his good and bad points. As she says in the lyrics, he has touched her soul, he comes out in her lines from time to time. As someone who has been with the same wonderful girl for over 50 years, I can relate to this sentiment. I am convinced that my wife and I are two halves of the same spirit that have come back together. Her touch makes me go week, and every time I see her I tingle all over, she is my ' Holly Wine ', and if it came to it, I would not hesitate for a second, I would die for her. I also associate with the lirics of the ' Cat Stevens ' song, ' I can't think of the right words to say', ' I long to feel you, I long to feel my arms around you, feel my arms around you, like the sea around the shaw '. Anyone who may read this comment, and who is lucky enough to find someone they love, be true to that person, and tell them every day that you love them. Three words, I love you, 8 letters, can tranform dispare into warmth and hope instantly, and it costs nothing. Love is the most valuable thing we posess. Listen to as many of Joni's songs as you can, some you will not like so much, but there are very many gems. Cold blue steel, Amellia, Little green, I am on a lonely road, the gallery, the midway, last time I saw Ritchard, Carey, Chelsy Morning, and so many more. Kind regards, Tony Marsh.
Another wonderful singer is Judy Collins who, has a similar sound to Joni. That soprano voice. Judy also covered Joni's Both Sides Now and recorded the Bryds' song Turn, Turn, Turn before them. She has a beautiful voice. Check out her versions or the studio recordings of Someday Soon or Born to the Breed (A song she wrote about her son) just to start.
Personally, I would have put poet before singer. Her words are as vivid, revealing and insightful as any other worthy poetry I've ever read. They stand up in their own right, there's few songwriters who have her degree of mastery of the language to do that. Like Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan or Neil Young they are the best people to sing their own songs, yet they are totally unique in their own singing styles and the world has acclimatised to their idiosyncrasies.
You said in your video that you may not see her live ...check it out she's touring one show in September 2022 also check out her beautiful show last weekend Newport folk festival Brilliant,a world gem she is ...
Yes ....she's on a dulcimer here........Dulcimers are awesome.....to be my next instrument after cello. She's such a classic artist.....voice......poetry.....playing......just stunning.
I love this song so much. The subject is like holy wine, not just fine wine. That adds a unique dimension, one I hadn't heard anywhere except for this song. The album Blue is my #1 most loved Joni Mitchell album. I don't know if I can narrow her songs down to just a top 5. Thanks for choosing it to react to, Harri.
She’s playing a dulcimer…she makes a piece as powerful as a symphony with just that dulcimer and her voice, actually I now hear one acoustic guitar as well….symphonic indeed!
Great reaction Harri... I’m glad you got to hear more of Joni’s vocal abilities. She’s one of a kind. I got to see her live in 1974... incredible exciting performance! If I may,I’d like to recommend Reacting to something by Joni’s close old friend Laura Nyro. She unfortunately died at age 49 from cancer but she was also one of a kind and was a huge inspiration to musicians from Prince to Elton John to Jackson Browne to Alice Cooper. Perhaps the songs that show her range would be the energetic ELI’S COMING or her desperate pleading on BEEN ON A TRAIN about heroin addiction. Laura’s 3 octave voice and songwriting were on another tier entirely, just like Joni’s is.
This young lady is her seventies and has been The legendary singer songwriter for more than fifty years so time to climb out of the rock and discover all her great tunes that you have been missing! Here are some of Joni’s all time phenomenal songs: The Circle Game,Help Me, Raised on Robbery,, Free Man In Paris,River, California,In FranceThey KISS On Main Street, And Harry’s House(Centerpiece)!👍🏻❤️☮️❤️👍🏻🎼🎤🎸🎹
This is from the album BLUE, the third greatest album of all - time, according to Rolling Stone Magazine. I suggest from this album, California, Carrey, RIver, Blue, Last Time I saw Richard; selections from her album Court and Spark. But I love all of her albums, even when her style evolved to a more jazz style. All of her albums are brilliant!
Joni played a dulcimer on this song. So beautiful! Joni often or perhaps even usually writes about herself and many of her paintings are self portraits. I heard her say one time " I write music for my sorrow and I paint for my Joy." Interesting thoughts and what an amazing poet she truly is. Joni no longer sings, she says that she cannot anymore but then again, she never did think that she could sing. Joni only started singing so she could make money to buy cigarettes. Anything by Joni is amazing no matter the genre she chooses.
Joni was playing Appalachian dulcimer, with James Taylor on guitar. According to her biographers, the song was inspired by a relationship with her fellow Canadian singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen, as was her "Rainy Night Taxi."
IT'S HER DULCIMER, SHE WAS VERYYYYY FAMOUS FOR PLAYING THAT, YOU CAN VIEW HER IN 1 OF THOSE GREAT 70-71 BBC CONCERTS, SHE DOES THIS, WOODSTOCK ( WHICH SHE WROTE ) , CALIFORNIA AND ANYWAY HARRI, IT'S A GREAT SHOW AND IT'S ALLLLLL OVER THE NET! :) SHE'S 27 IN THAT SHOW, 78 NOW
She loves him so much she can drink a whole case of him and not be weakened by the intoxication, ie, she can take more and more and not become drunk and weak...., she has an infinite capacity of infinite love...
Joni is the pinnacle of song writing. One of my favorites is her song Amelia, or This Flight Tonight. For current song writing brilliance, you should check out Jason Isbell. Dive into the song If We Were Vampires. His wife sings the harmony. It's a terrific song that will have you reflecting on life. 🙂
Among others, her albums "Blue" and "Court and Spark" Are brilliant. Not a bad song in either. But that's my opinion, Ohers have their favorites. She's just amazing. And if that's not enough, she painted all the album cover artwork. Truly a creative genius
Joni is one of the many Canadian artists who influenced many - some sadly underrated - Guess Who, BTO, RUSH, Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush, Five Man Electrical Band, 54-40, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Triumph, Tea Party, FM, Streetheart, Loverboy, Harlequin, Lee Aaron, Domenic Troiano, and so many more
This is the first reaction to this song that get's it right. Most don't listen to the lyrics and assume she is speaking kind words about the relationship. The entire song starts out "Just before our love got lost". The first part is such a burn to the person she wrote about.
Joni plays the Dulcimer and James Tayler plays the Acoustic Guitar in the background. And the woman "with a mouth like yours" was his mother; she knows him only too well!
I always took that line as she can’t get enough of him. Like a case of him and she could still have more….
Joni is 77 now and no longer tours and hardly plays music for performance. She sings a little from time to time but has had health problems as she ages and also devotes a lot more time to her painting. Joni is a fabulous artist and musician, singer-songwriter and I love her work very much.
I think that line just means - i can never get enough (or too much) of you.
This is my Favorite song of hers! ANYTHING off the album BLUE!!!
She's playing a dulcimer. The wine is so bitter and so sweet.
James Taylor is playing guitar, backing.
@@BuffaloC305 Yes and his guitar comes to the fore as she sings "part of you pours out of me in these lines from time to time."
lol
One of Canada’s greatest artists ever….she belongs to the world but we claim her lol
Joni is a Genius. It will take you a lifetime to discover her absolute beauty. Incredible Artist, Musician, Songwriter and Painter. A Treasure to the World. 🌎 🌍.
yeah?
The title simply means I can’t get enough of you
Hahaha ! I'm still puzzling over that line 40 years later !
My favorite jonni song
My generation adored Joni Mitchell and I'm delighted that you've discovered her, If you've not yet heard it, may I respectfully suggest her musical tribute to the Woodstock music and art festival, entitled, Woodstock.
"River" is another wonderful song from Joni.
"I can drink a case of you and still be on my feet". I can never get enough of you. It is a deep love so perfectly expressed.
I always took it the opposite way. "you are shallow, weak, and a case of you still would leave me on my feet."!
The voice of an Angel
The wine, too, is holy wine. Her voice crecendoes when she speaks of him, and drops and calms when she speaks of remaining on her feet.
great reaction great artist
Joni is amazing
One world - one Joni! 🤩
James Taylor is playing guitar on the song along with her dulcimer.
:-) My husband had me at Hello, but randomly saying I could drink a case of you sealed the deal. A guy who gets Joni... grab him! :-)
Fantaatic stuff😁🖤
haha
It means she could never get enough of him and still want more.
you said it Harry! She is intoxicated by whoever it is she is singing about! She is not only intoxicated but she knows this is the one she is at once drunk and grounded at the same. time

“Big Yellow Taxi,” from 1970 is a must…
Actually, the entire "Ladies of the Canyon" album is fantastic.
In Canada every one buys “cases of beer” as in “pick up a case of beer while you are at the liquor store, eh”.
Or if you’re in Ontario, “pick up a 2-4, eh.”
JONI IS A FABULOUS ARTIST A GENIOUS
A true genius. No doubt.
Ahhhh…my favorite Joni. Such beautiful lyrics. “Part of you pours out of me in these lines from time to time.” What a poet.
Listen to Hejira, from the Album Hejira, you may then understand the depth of Joni Mitchell's geniusl
Prince was a huge Joni fan. Attending one of her concerts very early. He plays this on a tribute album too. This song has been covered many times. I like Diana Krall’s version.

Great Kennedy Honor Nominees!
Any song off this album is gold. I recommend River as your next listen.
This entire album, Blue, was a game-changer for singer-songwriters. I highly recommend every single song, but especially River. Great reaction!
Absolutely. A lot of blue songs then comes 'Carey'.
@@Richard_Ashton Or The Last Time I saw Richard!

Only Joni can rock an Appalachian Dulcimer! !
Another great one here hope you love love you love Joni
She has another great song with the dulcimer - California.
or she means "I can't get enough of you", she can't drink too much.
That’s what I always thought and felt.
I think it’s both, plus the illness angle of a case of something.
The way ones comes up with a line like "constantly in the darkness" is by living it.
It just means you can't get enough of someone. You can't get drunk on their wine, you can take a lot and not be affected
"Help Me," "Free Man in Paris," and "You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio" are all excellent. "Coyote" is too, but there I recommend detouring into The Last Waltz and diving further into the Band from there.

I heard Nazareth's version first - it's a great cover.
she has lots of great songs, I love her. listen to The River
"You said love is touching souls;
surely yours touched mine
'cause part of you pours out of me
in these lines from time to time."
Any song off the album Blue is truly wonderful 💗
Joni has BARS! One of the all time great lyricists. I'm so glad you got the constantly in the darkness part, most don't and I think it's so clever.

Joni is the greatest of the singer/ songwriter genre.
Gave up a daughter for adoption, who's she's since reconnected with. A genius.
The song Little Green from this LP is about that.
Love you, Harri!
I always felt that Joni was an angel who came to earth for a little while❤️

Joni's songs have been covered by a galaxy of singers and groups, from folk singers to heavy rockers. Her words touch everyone who hears them.
She has the voice of an angel, a songbird. And a smart, gifted amazing songwriter.
In Canada "drink a case of ": a case means 24 beer or equivalent. IMHO, that's Joni's reference.
Prince recorded his own take on "A Case of You". It's brilliant! He was a huge fan of Joni.
Another wonderful singer is Judy Collins who, has a similar sound to Joni. That soprano voice. Judy also covered Joni's Both Sides Now and recorded the Bryds' song Turn, Turn, Turn before them. Joni says she's first a painter and second a singer. That gives you an idea how good her art is.

Court and Spark was always my cup……..Twisted
Phenomenal song
She’s playing a dulcimer…she makes a piece as powerful as a symphony with just that dulcimer and her voice, actually I now hear one acoustic guitar as well….symphonic indeed!
"I am constant as the Northern Star" is from Shakespeare's play "Julius Caesar" and "love is touching souls" is derived from a poem by Rilke.

amelia and coyote. i mean really anything joni is amazing honestly.
Joni is playing a dulcimer on this one. This song is about her love affair with Leonard Cohen. Another great song by JM to react to is 'For Free.'
A very thoughtful review Harri.
