Yeah, this is definitely where Shadow is at his worst in terms of characterization. I know fans like to blame Ian Flynn for this but he does know how to write Shadow well like in his run on Archie and in the recent Dark Beginnings shorts. That is, when Sega isn’t enforcing their mandates on him.
i really dont like the "i didnt know he cared" too, shadow may be bristly but hes a good guy i dont think he would just be cool with people dying or suffering lol, thats one thing i miss about shadow characterisation even when he was genociding the whole planet on the professors orders he was calm and not aggressive, he pretty chill to amy while he was waiting to die before she convinced him
Yeah. Don't forget that Ian made the 3 episode prologue to Sonic x Shadow Generations, and Ian wrote Shadow there AMAZING. In fact, it's the best writing Shadow got.
It’s really good to revisit this arc with all the Ian Flynn discourse because it shows that he knows how to write good sonic and the only thing holding him back is Sega, as we see with shadow in this versus shadow in dark beginnings.
I finished this arc 3 days ago, it was so depressing---MY GOD. Tangle and Vector went out like heroes, and Shadow and Charmy went out....Like idiots (BUT I'll excuse Charmy since the dude's LITERALLY A TODDLER. But Shadow...Nah. They wrote him SO WRONG in the IDW. The REAL Shadow would've listened to Rouge and ran. It's not Ian's fault that Shadow's like this, because again, remember that Ian wrote the Sonic X Shadow Generations 3 episode Prologue, and YOU KNOW how well Shadow is written in that----That's probably the BEST writing Shadow had. This is the mandates that they were given's fault.) Thank GOD I'm past that. Now I'm on issue #51, an issue past Surge and Kit's debut. Also, LOVE the accent they gave Starline and Rough & Tumble lol. This voice acting is really amazing! I've never watched the IDW on videos, I read the comics online.

The mandates are always gonna be there. Just depends on how the writer makes use of it.
