In my world, dunnage refers to the wooden planks that are packed around the freight (on a ship or truck) to shore them up for travel, or to keep them from shifting while underway. Dunnage is generally considered the wood that heats a longshoreman's house in the winter...
I'm really enjoying these "behind the scenes" looks at the distillery. When I visited Maker's Mark in December 2016 I noticed that their new warehouse is partially underground. It reminds me of the wine caves in the Napa Valley.
I went and did the tour at Jack Daniel's in Lynchburg TN. Really cool place. 89 barrelhouses(with more being built) each holding 1 million gallons, spread out thru 2000 acres in the Tn mountains.
I live vicariously through this channel. I wish I could be living your dream. One thing I have always wanted to try with aging whiskey is the smooth jazz approach, essentially play your barrels some smooth jazz 24/7 in the hopes that the vibrations from the music will help to let the spirit breathe in the barrel. For you though I think a running loop of your youtube soundtrack would be more appropriate especially that opener ooh we bop and zippity hop, lots and lots of that one. I hope one day I can make the pilgrimage to the house that Daniel built (and Rex mooched), till then if you're ever in San Diego give me a hollar and I'll buy you a round or two.
Giggled at "I'm just not worried about running out of storage" because today's newsletter had details about how they are trying to figure out more storage!
Wonder if you had barrels in the warehouse resting on metal tubes connected to a belt or chain that rotated them occasionally, or continuously if you don't mind the electrical cost lol, how would that impact the whiskey aging.
You‘re scaling up quickly, good luck! I have a question: If you didn‘t have an awesome and dedicated fanbase and already existing foot traffic with the school, how would you have sold your whiskey? From what I understand from your previous videos, distributors aren‘t super interested in super small-batch stuff, right?
Think you guys could appropriate a cave and stick a few barrels in there? A constant 56F temperature in the dinginess of a cave could really change how the whiskey ages, especially if it only spends part of its time there. Don't know the Texas cave system too well, but it could be a fun experiment for someone like yourself or Balcones. Granted, Kentucky and Missouri have some of the most expansive cave systems. Maybe a couple distilleries from those places could have a little fun with the caves there?
I've always been very interested into what would happen if people aged in the More marshy regions of Minnesota in the middle of the state cuz we have crazy fluctuations in temperature and humidity year round.
100% accurate about how climate works in Canada. West is warmer than east. But we have weird pockets too like cape Breton nova Scotia being warmer than the rest of the East coast.
in scaffolding we call "Dunnage" 2 pieces of wood which is used to rest pallets of steel tubing and other gear on ! just saying... in case someone actually cared!
Man, you guys seem like you have all the fun; at work no less. The most fun I get to have at work it playing paper football during conference calls. I think I need a new line of work.
Have you used the home barrel aging? I want to try White Dog, but am not sure where to store it. It’s cold here, should I move it to the attic, where it’s cold now , but hot in the spring and summer.
Building sub Grade in Texas has problems with your soil type. While earth sheltering is a great idea, the way the soil in Texas reacts to moisture will be a engineering challenge.
Hey Rex and Daniel, You mentioned at 09:36 that you have coins for sale. Checked the store just now, and see that they're still out. They sell out quick, or do I just need to keep my eyes peeled in the next couple days? Or should we wait for a 2nd Edition Coin?
Would it be suitable to store and age in barrels in my basement, its a 130 year old unfinished stone basement, slightly musty, incredibly steady in temperature but the humidity cycles up and down with the seasons.
It's sooo weird cause I had a good buddy growing up who looked exactly like Rex hand his little brothers name was Cody Nelson so when you said Cody Nelson it made me do a second take but that definitely wasn't him cause he wasn't from Canada.
Hi Tribe, so much is said about climate in the aging process, so why aren't warehouses just climate controlled (heat and A/C to make the temp whatever you want whenever you want)? Is it because of cost, or maybe because that wouldn't be considered the "natural" way? Drop some knowledge on me! :)
Living in Texas I will say what we always say when people talk about digging into the earth. Good luck with that. Lol, no that is a great idea for the dunnage. Just hope the rock isn't solid in your area.
Yeah, I live 8n Austin, we are on the Edwards escarpment. Solid limestone once you hit 6-18 inches below the surface. One of the most expensive places to build an in-ground pool and nobody has a basement here.
Oh my Frackin' god! You took the employee's Gym away for aging whisky? Think of the people's health, man... I hope you're planning on replacing the Gym. Please tell me you're replacing the Gym... No? No? *That* will go down on your Permanent Record! Cheers!
In very curious about the legality of selling the 1792 from the fallen warehouse. As I understand it, since whiskey is considered a food item, you have to have constant accountability for it, and who knows what happened when it fell, so idk if they're gonna be allowed to sell the whiskey.
@@TheWYman31 I meant during the process, the FDA cant audit someones warehouse in a different country as far as I'm aware, so all they see is a bottle and a name they have to approve.
That picture at the end of Rex almost dying should be shown at the beginning of each dry week.
@Moonshiner Jay Prob late, but dry week means no alcohol week.
instablaster.

Erik Wait finally another Erik that spells their name correctly
Anyone else enjoy seeing Rex in at least some sort of distress? For some reason, it makes the shananagins much sweeter...
I love how you guys have a whiskey review slash vlog/ shenanigans in one channel

"Can we taste it sitting down?"
I feel you, bro.
"So we are out in the environment now. I'm being aged appropriately." - Rex 3:40

Great Outro BTW !!
Lovin it...
Daniel suddenly feels the need for a giant Storm Cellar... yah know, in case of tornado and such... o_O

There's a German whiskey that was aged aboard a sail ship for a couple years. I wonder how that turned out.
I love the fact that we will get to see their rise to GLORY👑💰💰

Would you recommend a warehouse be insulated? There will be extreme cold where I’m going to be finishing bourbon.

Awesome guy's! Great whiskey run too funny! ⚔Cheers! ⚔🥃
Looking forward to seeing that black funk from the angel's share on the outside of the new rickhouse.😎
Oh man!!! Daniel got my hopes up when he said they had coins....my dreams were then crushed and murdered when the website still said SOLD OUT!!!! 😭😭😭😭
Interesting guys - thanks🙂
"Huff Huff, Puff Puff, Wheeze Wheeze, I'm coming, I'm coming" Hmmmmm Rex you need to keep that information in the bedroom.
Jared is a legend, met him last week!

I'm for converting all gyms into whiskey warehouses!
I enjoy these WB videos the most of all. How about aging a barrel on a vibrating bed. Of course you would need a truckload of quarters.
Or a lot of old cellphones
I need to come and visit!
Have you used the home barrel aging? I want to try White Dog, but am not sure where to store it. It’s cold here, should I move it to the attic, where it’s cold now , but hot in the spring and summer.

love this episode _, how about fallen barrel + fire whiskey edition..
what about barrel elevators toward the door with a trolley to center the barrels for the forklift that should maximize your space for starage
You’d have to lump East Texas in with Louisiana since we have such a higher humidity than the rest of the state.
Chasing that dang barrel all day long is hard work. So maybe building a new gym for conditioning would make sense during those strenuous shoots.
Seems like Rex is earning a little bit of the Rex Month 😂
Men who love whiskey have big hearts! Or maybe just enlarged....
Dunnage is used in trucking and means something completely different!
Hey guys, any update from Jared Vankosis sending barrels to different regions around the world to age? Cheers
Hey Rex and Daniel,
You mentioned at 09:36 that you have coins for sale. Checked the store just now, and see that they're still out.
They sell out quick, or do I just need to keep my eyes peeled in the next couple days? Or should we wait for a 2nd Edition Coin?
Age it near Exit 13 on the New Jersey Turnpike.
lol..Rex......15:15....Body by WhiskEy.
Rolling whiskey!
Would it be suitable to store and age in barrels in my basement, its a 130 year old unfinished stone basement, slightly musty, incredibly steady in temperature but the humidity cycles up and down with the seasons.
At least the fish died happy
Add sonic vibrations to whiskey storage
Is there anything that currently prevents to ability to use a dunnage other than money constraints? Basically meaning like law issues.
"Ricks and Racks, with Rich and Rex"
Canoe, Warehouse? Hello?! Nick Offerman is probably hiding in there somewhere, waiting to Mooch It All!
That's a wooden canoe right? Since the shape of the barrels also matters, why don't you fix it up into one - would love to see that.
Can you age a whiskey really fast by cooling with AC and then warming with a furnace over and over again every day?
It's sooo weird cause I had a good buddy growing up who looked exactly like Rex hand his little brothers name was Cody Nelson so when you said Cody Nelson it made me do a second take but that definitely wasn't him cause he wasn't from Canada.
I understand the plan now. Daniel makes Rex run with the camera and will thus get him to sweat back out all the whisk(e)y he's mooched.
Can It get too cold to age whiskey? if so at what temperature?
"This is for the win!" :)
Did you tow the barrels beyond the environment? because the front fell off?
Could it be, first?
This channel is on a roll...a barrel roll.
Good one dad..... 😂😂😂
Todays episode was falling down funny.;-)
As soon as I heard about the collapse I said I fully expect to hear a whiskey coming from 1792 called "Salvage". Yeah.
Is that Information sign from a Borders Bookstore? I swear I have seen that before.
Sounds like you really need an old missile silo
What’s the name of the first song used in this video? I tried all the links in the description and had no luck finding it.

Keep the hanging canoe in the warehouse.... that image would make an awesome logo, just saying.
High West is a Utah whiskey...you’ll have a mountain region for American whiskeys.
The challenge coins... are they really plated??? C’mon! I think a solid titanium coin would be bad ass!

Western north carolina, East Tn.. at 4700ft above sea level.. emmmm...
7th? Not too shabby...
Whiskey River don't run dry...
Rex, if you're going to keep running around like that, I suggest a good C25K program....or maybe make Daniel do the running.
1792- Fallen Spirit.
It’s shaken....
Not stired.

I feel stupid for not knowing this, but Im so confused. Is your distillery named the Crowded Barrel, or Tang and Feather?
What is the difference between those two names?
Crowded barrel is the distillery, fang & feather is the tasting room
Oh my Frackin' god! You took the employee's Gym away for aging whisky? Think of the people's health, man...
I hope you're planning on replacing the Gym. Please tell me you're replacing the Gym... No? No? *That* will go down on your Permanent Record!

Looks like Rex should have hit that gym a bit more while he had the chance ^_^

Crown Royal sold the Red XR from the fire of the Waterloo distillery! I think it should be fine! (hopefully)
Also of course, it's "the exact same whiskey", that was in those particular barrels during the incident.
@@TheWYman31 but that's in Canada, idk if american laws will allow it
They have to abide by American laws if they sell in America? Hence the whole crown bourbon mash
@@TheWYman31 I meant during the process, the FDA cant audit someones warehouse in a different country as far as I'm aware, so all they see is a bottle and a name they have to approve.
What donation amount is required to get a name on the wall?
Cause it’s a rick...house!
What’s the song at the end?
DJ quads: Millionaire
Whiskey Dunnageon?
The hobbit wants a dunnage?
And Daniel wishes he had makers 46s dunnage
Note to self never go bowling with Daniel.
DebWeek!!!
She deserves her own week for being a badass
Damn Rex maybe on the dry weeks you should hit the gym... lol
I really want a coin and they sell out quick
Have you checked your barrel location for the convergence of Ley-lines ?! Yes it could be a thing.
But then Kentucky is bigger in square miles than all of Scotland, so we obviously have a much wider variety of climate.
Ain't that funny my nick name is Dunny. Hahaha.
