Old books smell like vanilla. I learned at uni that the reason why old books have that particular smell is the amount of lignin that paper had back then (the wood used to make paper was less processed and purified than nowadays). Lignin is what makes the paper turn yellow and brittle, and it also smells sweet, which is why it’s used to make that fake vanilla extract for cooking that we can find in the supermarket. There’s your reason for why old books smell so much better. Objectively, they do.
omg yes the smell of old books is perfect and just the fact that a book has lived so many lives before its life with me makes secondhand bookshopping so lovely
the best smelling book i ever found was a 90s second hand copy of perfume: story of a murderer and the original owner sprayed the copy with perfume!!!! such a good idea and the old perfume with the old book smell was so good
Bluets is my favourite book I’ve read in 2022, I’ve read it twice and loved it the same. I’m so happy Dakota loved it too. Literature is beautiful like that sometimes.
I recently read Kafka's Letter to his Father and it had me bawling my eyes out. As someone who also has daddy issues, I feel like Kafka ghostwrited it for me. Also, I think you would love The Iliac Crest by Cristina Maria-Garza and I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman !!
the candlelit set up of your videos lately is so lovely! seeing figures and cars pass outside the window makes it feel like i’m there chatting with you
love waking up to milady posting! just did this yesterday, purchased The Stranger, The Brothers Karamazov, The House of The Dead, and Notes from Underground!! love you lady dakota
dakota pls pls pls do a video dedicated to the secret history and what you think about it, we know you love it but we would love to hear you ramble on about it... about the symbolism, the context, frankly anything related to the cult classic of a novel that is the secret history
the books - Letter To My Father by Franz Kafka (1:00) Vertigo & Ghost by Fiona Benson (2:40) Bluets by Maggie Nelson (4:38) De Profundis by Oscar Wilde (5:56) The Lust to Kill by Deborah Cameron and Elizabeth Frazer (7:20) Acts of Service by Lillian Fishman (8:39) Ovid (9:56) Girl Online: A User Manual by Joanna Walsh (11:13) Dance, Love and Ecstasy by John Kruse (12:40) Leonardo Da Vinci by Frank Zöllner (13:47) Hieronymus Bosch: Garden of Earthly Delights by Hans Belting (14:31) Byzantine to Renaissance: Italian Paintings by Pierre Tisné (15:21)
I have a course at uni where we mainly read Kafka's short stories and once we read just one page of this letter to his father and I think I didn't breathe at all until the page was done because I was so invested lmao
I love finding treasures in secondhand bookshops, flea markets and thrift stores. It's where I've found most of the books I own. I wish I had a local secondhand bookshop. It'd get me out of the house more often lol.
oh my god. dakota you are such a cutie. it makes me incredibly happy seeing you being so happy about those fascinating books. i literally love you so much ahh
im so excited for u to read Letters to my father...it's incredible. It broke my heart how misunderstood he was and how you can clearly feel his anxiety over telling all his frustrations to his dad. I cannot wait to hear your feedback
The pathetic feeling of knowing your only Friend is a parasocial relationship with a stranger on the internet but I digress. Now that I've exposed myself I must say your videos give me comfort and I always look forward to when you post ❤️ much love.
wow, ive seen only a couple of your videos, but hieronymus bosch as your favourite artist seems so fitting! I don't think ive ever seen a person whose general vibe matched their favourite artist that well :0
Lovely video, Lady Dakota! I want to wish you happy holidays and i really hope you know how loved you are. I may not really know you but you’re an inspiration and propably the first person i have ever looked up to so i hope you never lose your loving spirit
I really recommend smelling standard GDR paper that literally 90% of all books were printed on. It has such an incredibly archetypal smell I've always been wondering what the hell they put in there ...
I just discovered your channel a few days ago and I love your videos so much. You seem like a very genuine, heartwarming and unique person ! I can't wait to watch all your videos and read your book
let us know how u feel abt girl online!! i bought it and was so excited to read it after reading the blurb but was so disappointed when i actually read it :/
I would love to recommend you to read the other side by alfred kubin which inspirated franz kafka to write his book casttle and read that right after(if you havent yet:)) I myself plan to do so and even tho i havent yet, you should take a look at it im sure you would love it!♡
this gal is amazing this is your style this is just perfectly vibes with me and makes a perfect atmosphere I love you. 6:08 dopamine. I think the last one does not smell that good because of too much paint that simple. book? you've been writing one... ok you made hook me up I'm yours.
Buying (and reading) books to fill the void - This is an idea of young people who will pass with age - before, a great curiosity attracted us to many things - too much? - no - one cannot unlearn - any more than one can stop thinking or become less intelligent and less curious - one should have had a lower IQ - being other than oneself - thinking that one knows too much is a banal optical illusion that will pass - what you have seen or read as what you have eaten have built your body and mind - one day, you will discover that all this scattered knowledge is connected - and that all the books you have read (no matter how disparate) and all the books you will read from now on seem to become one book (or the pages or chapters of a single book) as written by a single immortal or eternal person
祝你拥有美好的冬日!我也文学爱好者,深沉地爱着文学。很开心能同你分享喜悦❤ I read De Profundis this summer and it’s gorgeous. 王尔德总是能带给人美学上的快乐。像朦胧雪地上的鲜红。 花非花,雾非雾。 夜半来,天明去。 来如春梦几多时? 去似朝云无觅处。 (a Chinese poem by 白居易)

De Profundis is basically Henry Winter and Bunny Corcoran’s relationship, Donna Tartt must have based them on Oscar Wilde and Bosie
