So sick of people doing muffler deletes and calling it an "exhaust" system. Your engine needs that back pressure, especially N/A engines, turbocharged engines are a lot less dependent. Matter of fact, coming out of the exhaust side of the turbo, you should use as big of a pipe as you can without being ridiculous. Some people just dump it straight out of the hood which sounds like garbage.

I actually like how it has the standard halogen headlights. It looks kind of cool with the warmer lights. I’m sure it saves a bit of weight with no xenon ballasts, igniters, wiring, etc.
I still lose my heart to the warm-lightcolor halogen headlights. That warm feeling between heart and steel is never wrong! My E90 LCI with Xenon headlights on, has the H8 halogen light source
It doesn't really save any noticeable amount of weight. It's a box ticking exercise above anything else to reach a papered figure they set out and makes no difference to actual performance numbers.

That crisp white powerful beam 💯 The halogen is kind of more inferior but that kind of gives it a different feeling vibe when driving at night. Like calmer and more relaxed. It’s hard to explain what I mean. And you can still see pretty decently, especially if you upgrade to a high performance halogen bulb it’s pretty legit ngl

Also the worst sounding M/// car imo, the csl sounds a bit better but the normal e46 m3 sounded like a broken ricer car, too metaly, too raspy and you cant get rid of it.
It is a manual gearbox. You only have to remove the computer and put the manual stick on it. Look up for that episode on Wheelers Dealers where they convert an regular M3 from SMG to manual.
To be honest, the SMG gearbox from what I've heard just adds to the brutality of the car, and bearing in mind if you do what this car wants you to do (absolutely cane it everywhere)its crude headbanging shifts do seem to make sense. Its not meant to be driven around town in 5th, a little like the Lamborghini ISR gearbox of similar design.
SMG stands for "Sequentielles Manuelles Getriebe", which means it's a sequential manual transmission or an automated manual transmission. Together with the first generation of Ferrari sequential transmissions with paddle shift on the steering wheel, this was the beginning of automated sport transmissions and double clutch transmissions in the automotive world for production sports cars. Therefore the CSL should stay the way it is, but not modified by too many idiots in the USA, who really think that changing the transmission and destroying its originality would make it a "better" sports car. The M3 CSL transmission is still a manual transmission, but shifting gears was automated with a motor. All these fucking annoying complaints "buhuuuu, it's so so sad it's not a manual" are so fucking boring !!! Fucking dumb internet! The truth is: all these shitty complaints about the M3 CSL transmission and gearbox are totally irrelevant, because the E46 M3 CSL is still a fantastic machine, which has become a legend, no matter how "fast or not fast" or imperfect the SMG really is. It's a known fact, that the SMG isn't that bad, considering the era this sport automatic transmission was introduced. With this car, BMW just tried to bringing some motorsport feeling with a paddle shifting experience for the hardcore M3 fans. Even for todays standards and compared to very fast and perfectly shifting transmissions like a PDK, the CSL transmission still shifts very decent. CSl E46 M3 has the best straight sex engine ever produced, the engine is the S54 that is a 3.2L engine, produces 355hp originally and 273 ft lb of torque, and sounds like a rasping banshee when pushed to the red line, thanks to the reprofiled camshaft, also because of the carbon air intake, performance headers and the bigger exhaust valves. The E46-generation M3 was already a great car, but with the CSL, the engineers at BMW Motorsport created a modern classic. It might be one of the greatest M3s there's ever been.

Interesting point- you spoke briefly about engine weights; the S65 engine in the E92 M3 is about the same weight- if not lighter than the straight six S54, corollary of it having an aluminium block, as opposed to a cast iron block of the six.

The smg gear box is really great. With manual it is nomore csl , please just respect the car. People who change are not fan . You just need to learn how to drive with smg . That gearbox make the car so special .Ad i can tell you , u can be nimble and fast with the smg

That was awesome. I just sold my E46 M3 6MT so it was pretty special to see this video. The CSL was such a monumental car. It would be so cool if it was more easily possible to replace the awful Getrag 420 / SMG with a modern DCT. I think that would change the personality of the car for the better.

I have seen a episode on "Wheeler Dealers" when they changed an M3 from SMG to manual, and they said that actually the gearbox stays in place becouse in fact it is a manual , only activated electronically. They did it very simple like a afternoon job with a beer on the side with friends. Ha ha ha.
This was my favorite m3 ever. I made an intake box for my volvo 960 straight six so it can sound like this haha believe it or not I sort of achieve a similar intake sound. The volvo don't go like this though lol also I have had the volvo as a daily wagon driver for decades now. I don't know if this bmw engine would daily last I would only drive on nice days.

I remember from the launch of the e92 m3 v8 the engine is actually lighter then the previous straight 6 m3 engine… so interesting it doesn’t feel that way. The csl is obviously a lot lighter overall! What a sound 😍
It has been measured with a fully dressed engine with ancillaries the s65 is actually heavier, just bare short block the s65 is slightly lighter. So in reality the s65 is actually heavier with everything on.

I just sold my E46 M3 6MT and replaced it with an F87 M2C DCT. The M2C doesn't sound nearly as good, but it's way more fun to drive than the M3.
