You're right. Fortunately for him car batteries generally only off-gas when they're charging and then only if they have a leak. With that said... picking a battery up by a terminal is a sure fire way to create a gas leak around the post.

Если "-" , то не будет нормальной массы на половине датчиков и приборов - соответственно тоже ничего нормально работать не будет!!! Следовательно - это максимально не надежно и неработоспособно!!

It wouldn't really matter because that size wire would never start a car engine, anyway.

Да по моему и одним хомутом отлично бы контачило,для верности второй можно было прикрутить.
