  • Join me as I spend the first night solo winter camping in my woodland. I use a modified canvas polish lavvu tent and a woodstove as a hot tent for this winter camping trip. It's early December and the leaves have fallen from almost all of the trees in my woodland. The air is cold, but fresh. I setup the tent, cut some firewood with the axe and get the woodstove going. I cook up some good food and enjoy the evening listening to the owls and wildlife of my woodland. Thank you for watching!

    Tip for the sinuses: Stoke up the stove, close the tent door (with enough ventilation to be safe ofc), and boil a pot of water with some fresh herbs/ aromatics until you can't see the floor any more XD I once took a thermometer into my lavvu and it can get up to about 50 C at the top! Proper woodland sauna!

    I'm thinking that if you don't have a convenient tree to replace the centre pole, you could make up a tripod that would fit on the outside of your tent and use that as the centre pole -- effectively moving the pole to the outside of the tent.

    The Polish poncho tent mod is genius Mike, I did this to my one just a few weeks ago, went out and brought a sewing machine and it's a game changer, so much more space. Really enjoying hot tenting now, I have a similar setup, it is just so much nicer being in a heated tent, cooking in a warm environment.
    As mentioned your setup could have been better:) I think Shaun did an excellent job on the mods.

    • @Funkteon

      Best Polish Lavvu modification in my opinion is the Lavvu centre tarp by Bushcraft Spain - It's the best $170USD you'll ever spend on your Lavvu and it more than doubles the usable space inside the tent - However, with the modifications seen in this video, the modification I've mentioned would no longer work, as it only connects two stock-standard Lavvu halves. It essentially turns your Lavvu into a baker-style tent and the tarp's buttonholes perfectly match up with any of the three Lavvu sizes.

      @soonerfrac4611 2 года назад +1

      I prefer canvas in a winter tent, especially if it’s heated. But if I’m going to carry it on my back I’m not entirely sure if id want to carry any canvas tent/shelter half system anymore. So heavy! So much wasted space in a pack. Car camping or if I have pack animals, sure, all day long.
      Flip side is the purpose built lightweight tipi shelters don’t really hold heat as well as the canvas. And they cost quite a bit more. But they fit into 1/4 the size or less & weigh next to nothing.

    • @Funkteon
      @Funkteon 2 года назад

      @@soonerfrac4611 You're exactly right, those silnylon hot tent tipis lose heat very rapidly, within minutes of the fire going out, the tent is freezing again, whereas you don't need to constantly feed your stove with wood in a canvas tent such as a Lavvu...

    Good Nz morning Mike. Been waiting for this for a while now. Needs the "Beast from the East" again doesn't it. A bit of the white stuff. Yeah when I first saw your setup, I thought to myself that that was a heck of a sag..I would just chuck a piece of wood under the center pole and raise it. But you've already acknowledged it. Just a little idea I've used when at 75 doing car camping in winter.
    We call them "Thermettes" ...(fire in the middle, water jacket on the outer,)..set one up, and throw in a decent size spud,partly split with butter wrapped in tinfoil into the coals. Then go ahead prepare your hot tent, and get your stove going. By the time that's done, you'll find that the water in thermette is boiling, cuppa tea and a hot potato ready to eat as a starter and warmer.

    Very interesting and nice to watch the video dedicated to the night in a canvas tent with a wood-burning stove. I myself had long dreamed of a similar one and only recently acquired a titanium wood-burning furnace, which is manufactured in Yekaterinburg, in the Urals. It differs from yours, but the general principle of work is similar. In Russia, it makes no sense to buy land for Bushkraft. There is the opposite. If you arrange a fire on your own land , it can be detected by drone. And you have to pay a fine of about 100 dollars. If you do it in the forest on state land, you will most likely not find, and they will not look. Only a small part of the forest belongs to individuals. And the territory is huge. In some places you can move for hundreds of kilometers and not to meet human housing. Even 100-150 km from Moscow there is a taiga, similar to Siberian with bears and other animals. It is a pity that because of politics there is a conflict between our authorities and the free world, including the United Kingdom. It is very sad. But ordinary people in Russia are respectful to English, American, Canadian and other bushkrafters and travelers. We have the same hobby. We love to be in nature and spend the night in tents, use a wood stove. Peace and friendship!

    If you have to open the door because you're too hot try using bigger logs .I have to laugh at folks spending so much time splitting wood and then saying 🤣 it's too hot . The more surface you expose the faster and hotter the wood burns . You you can also slow the burn by using the air vent and damper. You will use less wood and save time splitting all that kindling by using bigger logs less exposed surface area to burn. I use to heat a house with wood and the principle is the same big or small.

I believe almost all woodland should be open for people to visit, travel through, enjoy etc.. but if I’d bought it myself I could see me becoming more protective and wanting it all to myself! What are your thoughts?

      The problem is that people are extremely disrespectful. I think many people start out wanting to be welcoming, but then people leave a bunch of garbage and play loud music and you quickly get pretty possessive

    Honey, if you can't sleep well, autoanilize the un confortables body-signs, if is mental fatigue or body fatigue, firstable, to eliminate the uncorfontables things doing it before: go to W. C, no cold on skin, no too much hot on the skin, the hands, the feet, in correct temperature, no mosquitos, drink a little bit water, any dirty sound (noise), if you have nervious in barriga, valeriana, if is the head very moved, Melissa, right? To be sure that before go to the bed, for your hand EVERYTHING IT'S ALL RIGHT. RIGHT? NOW think to another pleasant thing that isn't me, HAHAHAHAHA.. another thing, JAXX ALWAYS HELPS YOU, HUH!!! and with a confortable position DO NOT MOVE!!! now, close your eyes and fix your look in one black point(,black because your eyes are closed!) RIGHT? but please, , DO NOT MOVE, VERY VERY IMPORTANT, IN THE SAME TIME WITH FIX POINT!!! And doing it, You never will know when you fall in your dream. I know that the best is no think about ready to sleep, because sometimes it seems go versus a wall, right? If you can't sleep, because you never are tired at night, (the sun can helps you, a warm shower, can relaxed you)but if it isn't enough, there is a reason for you, find it!! Do you think a lot with me huh??? The tent, the fire, the silence, suddenly a message with a rose...Yes, Who knows!!! , maybe!!! . I know, it's a dream!!!... Hahahahaha...🌹🌾. Mike, I don't see you emit the same. Your body does not emit the same, the same tenderness, etc. I don't say this because the face, or the body Sometimes you have similar reactions... Same carácter, but only one part... HE IS BIGGER...He has much more parts, àmbits, big personality, more extens, I mean, Deeper. Do you understand me??? I don't know you completely, but I think that sometimes I'm not sure, I never know it!!! I'M SORRY IF I STAY IN A MISTAKE. The Key is: I don't feel you the same way. Right? I hope your answer, not like ever.

    As always you have the fire in one side where you have the hole where you get out the tube, the tube very short, enough distance, I mean, same lightness but solid, one peace done, I mean... Right? For to bring between the backpack and your back( different backpack huh), but I was thinking where is the oven??? Like this too, isn't it??? In the same 💼. I was thinking... The pot or pots that you use to the coffee or milk, or soup or whatever, it's would be ⬛ not ⚫ why? Because perhaps you have the possibility to have 2 pots on the fire and be able make more good food. (don't worry😋).

    Just a question I have been wanting to ask for along time. Would you do this if you didn't get endorsements from the many sponsers or "companies" wanting to give you free items to showcase /review. Some of these sponsered /given to you items are VERY costly! No average Joe Potato could even dream of buying these items realistically. Sponsored endorsements and then you also had the big sad story about your day who seems to by some miracle be ALIVE! My dad died 18 years ago. But I didn't post a sob story trying to gain money or sympathy.

    I have a big family & my uncles & cousins & I all hunt wild hogs in the fall & winter months just about every weekend . We would set up are own tents & such on a piece of land one of my uncles owns , now that there up in age a bit it gets harder for them to sleep on the ground so I have a friend who manufactures hunting tents & I approached him about building a 20 foot by 20 foot walking tent with a big vestibule we all can use . Typically what I wanted would have cost me around $7000 USD but he built it for me for $3000 USD I wanted something double walled & with a floor with panels that open so we could put are stoves on open ground . It had to be camouflaged outside with built in LED lights in Section on the inside that ran on 2 D battery’s for each section & loops in the Ceiling for hanging lanterns or such . Now my uncles can bring in there cots & get some Comfortable sleep at night we even lay down 2 Layers of standing mats that you can get from Harbor freight to make the floor soft & warm when you get out of bed . My cousins that are younger still sleep on the floor & now I sleep in style on a nice cot ,Well worth the money & the time I had to wait for it .

    I've done a few similar mods to mine.
    Zips front and back. So it can still be used a 2x ponchos and as a tent. Hanging loop. Zips in the arm holes. Rejigged it all so it not has the same 'wet side' when used as ponch or lavuu.
    Like the skirt idea. Might have to break out the sewing machine for that. Will need extra thought if keeping it able to be a poncho too.

    It's funny how ppl still believe that they can own land. Like if you own a lawnmower then you don't have to pay taxes on it every year, it's your's to do with what you want but if you buy a car, a motor vehicle of any kind, even a block of residential land or country land etc you will always have to pay some sort of fee every year to keep owning that item & as soon as you don't then the government can come along & take it from you legally. This doesn't sound like ownership to me, it sounds more like you are renting the usage of the vehicle or land etc. You can't keep it in your family to pass on through your family because they will also have to pay fees to claim it & in some country's you can't even pass on land to a family member when you die because it must be sold according to the rules of the country you live in so again you don't own it. Obviously these laws do not apply to the rich ppl but only to the poor ppl.

    Great video and a great adventure. You need a permanent log cabin, maybe a bit bigger than the one you use in your other location as a base in the woods. Camping is fine but it can’t be fun in bad weather and thick snow. With a cabin your family could enjoy overnighting in the woods.

You seem to have solved that problem, which allows you to stay out longer and carry your gear longer distances?

    I forgot to say:
    What if you ran a line between two trees, to support the D-ring at the top of the tent? Secured to the trees, higher than the D-ring. Then you could tighten that up to get the tent however tight you want it.
