It's not just a New Zealand delicacy, it's a world wide, 5 star, Michelin delicacy. The thing is.. kina is a top dollar seafood round the globe.. but too us New Zealanders.. it's our norms.
How can you born in a paradise like new zealand or jamaica or haiti or so many other beautiful places. I'm from boring Germany at the edge of the Black Forest and in a cold city. It would love to see the world is turning backwards. Means everybody have a yard, enjoy local herbs and animals and have nothing to do with effin Babylon 💁🏼♂️ The life would be so much better
I didn't know it was called Sea Urchin until I was in high school. It's popular known as Sea Needle in 🇯🇲. I accidentally stepped on one when I was a boy, it wasn't a nice feeling.
Matthew kiaora welcome to aotearoa brother 🙏 land of the long white cloud. Hope youve enjoyed your stay bro 🙏 just subscribed to this channel but im back to ras kitchen YAAAA MAN BLESS UP
Yeah Matty .. great to see you in NZ doing your thing ..i hope you enjoying our country , ive been watching you and Mokko on Ras Kitchen 👌🏽 love your work bro
Matt Pancer most eat them raw out the shell, to cook just get the meat and fry in a pan with some lime and Caribbean seasonings 🙂there' a season for them here cause people over harvest them and they was going extinct 😬can see some harvesting via this RUclips link ruclips.net/video/LGYiC2pDxNw/видео.html
Use a knife go straight down through the eye then slice down itll save the shell spikes and sand getting in the row. Much easier than smashing them open. Or your gonna waste some of the row. Also btw in some regions theyre saltier and sweeter and in others there more sour. Enjoyed the video regardless we go out every summer or the start of new years. For dives.
We have them here in hawai'i, we call them wāna (vah_nah). They're loaded with long spines that aren't as easy to harvest like these, we have to shake them in a special type of basket until the spines are all broken off so that we can handle them by hand after. I really want to go to aotearoa specifically to harvest kina just so I can stop drooling over kina videos on RUclips 😆
I also thought that guy you chat with and show you about the Kina was cool as vibes, the onion bag home made method, grabbing a good old rock as a tool, thats how the Maori people did it for hundreds of years, you also using a rock to open it right on the beach edge is getting that old school New Zealand experience. Sure you could be more sophisticated and get more value from the catch but for the sake of the video and travelers experience I think it was way more wicked and just vibes you know, like thats as simple and raw human experience as you can get really.
Awesome footage bro. I live out whale bay above indicators. I’m privileged to be able to pop down and grab a feed when tangaroa ain’t roaring down there. Glad you enjoyed your catch
🦦 So I got to take a quick trip to New 🇳🇿 Zealand today.... (Spiritually) via this NICE 👍🏾 Video... Thank MP! Just have to wonder about those rocks beneath those rad waves 🌊 those guys are surfing 🏄🏾♂️ on.... 🤦🏾♂️
You can use two spoons, put the spoons back to back and stab them into the Kina’s mouth and push them apart. That’s the cleanest way to open without a tool.
Staggering amount of comments criticizing your traditional, old school way of opening the Kina by using a rock. Its the way Maori people did it for years but no no no you did it WRONG because you did not do it the way people do it these day with spoons. How wrong of you. Should be ashamed honestly. Nah im just annoyed at how many people telling you to do it their way and that the traditional way of doing it is bad and incorrect. Cheers from Canterbury New Zealand, really cool to see you having done content in my home country.
Bro.........you got some massive shots of Aotearoa and that kina looked amazing and now im hungry. However, your outro music was questionable first time watching too. Kia Ora!
It looks great. How have you managed to get into New Zealand at the moment?..I’m a NZ permanent resident currently in the U.K. and I just had my flight to Christchurch cancelled and there’s no availability until after may 2021 at the earliest
Everyone always raids that spot in rags, that’s why they’re so small there. You gotta use the spoons or a knife to open them bro. That’s if you wana eat the tongues whole...
mate your not meant to smash it open its better to stick a knife in the end where theres no hole and twist it opens it clean, also you don't need gloves, if you keep getting them then your hands will get tougher.

Should’ve just grabbed a couple spoons 🥄 strong ones that is back to back push them into the centre then pry apart simple 👍🏾
Most places allow a daily catch bag of 50 Kina, and they can be harvested by recreational divers with aqua lungs or tanks
glad to have you in NZ, especially in Raglan 😍 (Whaingaroa) love & light 💕
THanks Rita! Loved my time in NZ, and I need to get another 1989 Mitsubishi L300 back one day ❤️
This channel is well informative. I'm learning a lot. Keep exploring and live life to the fullest
thanks Mayne! 👊
50 is the limit and yes they were really small. But still look YUMMY
Limit is 50 per diver per day.
Fark that's still heaps
Kina dude seems very likeable and the video is beautiful and entertaining as always ! More please !
Thanks for watching! GOing to post every week on this now, no more sleeping!
Camped at Manu Bay in early 80’s, used to pick Kina and mussels down past the boat ramp, near the waterfall. Free meals! I loved it there in whale bay
Free meals rule! Especially when its gourmet fresh from the sea! big up Donald

Barbados natives been eating these for generations ...love these aka sea urchin or sea eggs eat them raw or cooked

these ones were definitely sweeter, will have to try some other areas 🙌
This is the place I spent my holidays growing up raglan a piece of paradise in New Zealand
Kurt you are a lucky guy!! Total paradise
Use the 2 spoon technique Kare...cleaner easier way to open them and the kina isn't broken up as much. Love the video 🤩
2 spoons into the center of the kina, pull apart.. then use the spoon to scoop the tongues out .. (just a tip)
Just put a knife in the top and twist the knife.

Whaaat! Need to try that one, sounds exotic :0
Was in AU in 1992. Didn't know you could eat these! No worries, mate! Go get a feed!
Next time you open the kina you can wash it in the sea water and all that is left over after washing is the urchin 👍
Miss diving at raglan. Kina, paua, mussels n crays. You can get kina on tank, 50 per person. Just got me some today. Awesome bro.
I miss that place, such a cool town 😎
Yes, the gonads (yellow portion) of the sea urchin are a delicacy.

I have no idea how to dispatch those , but smashing them with the rock , like that...it seems kinda messy.
Yeah theres a tool they use that you jam into it then open it like pliers and it breaks it open cleanly.
You can use two spoons, put the spoons back to back and stab them into the Kina’s mouth and push them apart. That’s the cleanest way to open without a tool.
@@benlaceyhodge8622 Wrong, you use one knife you stab it in the top and then twist the knife

Good question!! 💯
High in iron.
