  • Marshall Valvestate VS265 guitar amp in for repair. The single 12AX7 in this was very microphonic. It also had a broken pot. We fix it and do a lengthy demo with this amp. This does not sound bad despite it being a good few years old. You can buy for reasonable too.

That was some delightful playing at the end! Never underestimate a solid state amp until you try it out.

Very nice video Martyn. Pretty sure this stereo model was used and endorsed by the great Geoff Whitehorn for a while.

Great stuff Martyn.. I always thought the Valvestate series produced some very respectable and usable amps. Great demo ..

You should do a video of your guitars. That would be interesting.

Note F2, a Wilkoman fuse on the pcb next to the 12AX7 (small round black thing, looks like a rectifier); if that blew, you'd have to pull the entire board to change it! Probably for either the heater supply or for the tube's high voltage.....

nice Martyn. What I do if sealed push switches are dirty, is to drill a 1mm hole as far towards the back as possible. Go very slowly, and as you get through the plastic, stop drilling. then its easy to spray in switch cleaner.

I've done pretty much the same thing; if the plastic housing is soft I put the thin, tiny drill bit into a handheld "pin vise" or mandrel and spin it by hand, to minimize the chance of breaking through too fast with a power drill or Dremel tool and damaging the switch contacts. If pots are mounted onto and underneath a PCB and you can't reach them with a can of contact cleaner, you can drill a small hole through the PCB inbetween the solder pads and traces that the pots are soldered to, and squirter cleaner in through the holes. Again, utmost care is needed, and finishing the hole by hand is advisable even if you start it with a motorized drill or rotary tool. Try to orient the unit so that any chips of PCB material will fall sideways when the drill bit penetrates through the board so that the chips don't fall inside the pot.
