I have a deaf dog that doesn’t pull. A good retractable lead is very useful for communicating with him during walks because there is always tension on the line. A quick tap on the line lock, and my dog will turn to me looking for a hand sign.
These leads are tools, and like any tool, they have risks when used improperly.

Agreed! Flexileads are great if you're dog is well trained and you're aware of your surroundings and know what you're doing.Problem is too many people don't know how to train their dogs and aren't paying attention to their surroundings. You can even use them to train the come command, sit and down command while walking. And I have a noose connecting my wrist to the handle so it can't come off my wrist.

Agreed. I love this dog trainer, but not all of those leashes are made the same. I got a Kong version and its a lot heavy duty and more like a rope and is perfect for my boy when I like to walk him by the river and let him jump in while I stand on the side while I'm in a on leash park.

What's the advantage of having a retractable lead and a deaf dog? you could very well use a flat collar and regular lead and accomplish the same thing. he's right, they're trash under any circumstance.

      Absolutely true.
The consistent and slight tension on the line is a good stimulous to the dog in which direction to go as well.
I wouldn't use it on a very high energy, aggressive, or flight risk dog but for standard cases or young puppies, no problem from me.

    • @leaelzebub811
      @leaelzebub811 Год назад +7

Walk my big lab/rottie/pit mix on a big sturdy one of those. It enables you to easily train the loose leash. Tension and a little snatch if she goes to far without permission or some way I don't want her to go. Looseness when she's doing what she's supposed to. When I say "okay explore" she can immediately get further away and bounce around, expending more energy and doing nose work. When I shush her she slows down and let's me catch up. When I shush and say "heel" she goes back to walking right by my leg.
It. Was. Not. Easy. To. Train.
She is still only 6 months so it's not perfect yet, but if you do the work, these leashes allow more freedom for you and your dog. This way I can let her wander in the country side but still have the ability to pull her back if I need to. I love it. Lets her play but keeps her safe.

If your dog is trained, it shouldn't be breaking a Flexi... I use large dog Flexi leashes on my 25 lb. terriers... I like letting them roam on leash... One command, and their at heel... Walking them on long, non retractable leads would drag the leads through loads of dog crap from owners that don't pick up after their dogs... When I walk my dogs it's for their enjoyment... to break up the monotony of their day, and for exercise... not a tool to follow me around, totally focused on me, waiting for a bit of praise or a treat reward...

Flexi leashes are great for an off leash trained dog, or an acreage. The misunderstanding I think people have is why these are pretty terrible for urban walking in crowded areas. You can’t reel it in like a normal leash so control is limited. If you have an acre of land and just one dog these are fine.

Unpopular opinion here then I guess. I like the flexibility of the flexi lead. It has a brake and you can pop it at any length. It automatically stays up and out of the wet but allows my dog the freedom of being off leash while keeping the leash Karens happy. The webbing is extremely strong and durable as is the locking mechanism. He can be a dog and do dog things and I can walk with minimal interruption.

Yeah you have to be careful with them. And yes it's going to be super unsafe if your dog isn't trained. But they're really handy when your dog is off leash trained but you're in a city that doesn't allow off leash dogs. If my dog gets tangled I tell him to stay- and he does. If I see another dog I recall him into a heel. When I was a little kid a dog on a flexi lead ran in front of and got tangled up with my stroller. It left a gash across my throat. So yeah, I'd never ever use a flexi lead on a dog liable to bolt or one that isn't leash trained.

Your dog clearly doesn't respect you or your authority then. He respects the tug of the leash, that's it. Probably because he wants to run and you won't let him.
Do you know how they used to train elephants? Like in India and whatnot back in the day?
They get em while they're young, strap chains to one of their feet, and tie them to a huge pole. The baby elephant will almost die trying to escape. After a few rounds of that and once the elephant is an adult, they tie a thin piece of string around their leg and tie the other end to a small steak, like for camping.
This gives the elephant memories of the chain and post, and it has no hope for escaping, so it doesn't. When really, it can terrorize and demolish everything around it if it had the right mindset. A gunfire shot, a fire, a spook, ruins this entire plan and completely backfires once the elephant actually gets loose. Very dangerous to train this way.
Hopefully nothing spooks your dog while he happens to not have a leash on; for his sake and others. Because he only listens to the leash, not you.

I'm so hoping that with the popularity of your dog training page n a couple of other good one's, that dog owners see n understand how important it is to train your dog, especially the owners who have zero control n think it's acceptable for their dog to rush kids, other dogs, people etc all the while screaming from 40ft away that "It's ok he's just being friendly!". 🤦‍♂️
We've had far too many dog fights, (3 dogs pass in two months in small regional town), due to lack of control n training. 😔
Last week a woman yelled at my friend n I cos we lifted my friends two small dogs up to get away from her huge barking n bearing its teeth dog. She got very nasty n rude that we didn't just stand still so her dog could, (potentially), hurt them. She said that we didn't know what we were doing n that lifting the little ones up n out of the way was the cause of her dog's barking n getting more aggressive. Mind blown! 🤯

In my opinion they are fine for most small dogs as long as the dog has decent training. We used one for my chihuahua growing up and one advantage of the flexi lead is you can give them audio/physical commands without much effort. If you slightly hold the lock down but still let the line go, you get a clicking noise that the dog will recognize as a warning to slow down and if they keep pulling you can tighten it all the way and stop. Anything over 15-20 pounds I’d wouldn’t use them.

I have used flexi leashes for years and NEVER had a problem with them. I use the TUG brand and it's very durable. They never get tangled up and it gives my 12 pound Bichon a lot of freedom for him to explore. I know how to handle this leash better than any other type of leash. I also love that it retracts all the way where I can keep my dog very close to me on busy streets. I actually tried using regular leashes and couldn't get used to them.

I use a flexi lead often because alot of area’s require your dog to be on the lead.

Its more like a loophole lead, technically on the lead but gives my dog more enjoyment and freedom. I always carry her main lead to for when near roads etc.

I don't why these are a thing, they've been around forever, the locking part always breaks, and gods forbid if your dog chews through it, I've people almost lose fingers cause the lock breaks and wrap it their hand(don't ask why).
If people want a longer lead they can always buy the training leads and make handles by tying the lead so you have intervals of length, I've done it this way for over twenty years, it may not conventional but it works well.
The other thing you could get is a horse lead, it's what I use with my dogs after I had three clips break and they were weighted for dogs bigger then mine, the leads about 50lbs more then what my dogs weigh, not sure if it's the construction or what.

Try having a husky, we are still training off leash 2 years later we have a heavy 20m lead for fields. Short bungee for controlled walks.
Retractable leads at least strong ones have a place. When I'm on a field I can use an extra long version to quickly let him run. Rather than having the long lead that Is less compact and gets dirty easier.

With the ban on American Bully XL's in the UK I can tell you that an untrained dog is a complete liability on a flexi lead no matter where you are. I walk my boy in the fields with a flexi and when I recall or he reaches the full extent of the lead he come back to me EVERY SINGLE TIME! It is my responsibility to be vigilant of other dogs, foxes etc However, I wouldn't use a flexi to walk to the shops or congested areas. With the exception of the prong and half check collars from Martingale ALL his other collars and leads come from Bully Billow and I use the tactical combat selection.

Hi, a few questions regarding my Boston terrier. Her name is pebbles.
I noticed that when I walk her on her front leading leash, it stops her from pulling , but it makes her walk at an angle which I feel is causing a misalignment in her spine. When I attach her leash to the back of her harness, she no longer walks at An angle but she pulls. I spoke to a dog walker and she said she’s a terrier, and terriers are meant to pull. Her pulling truthfully doesn’t bother me, but I read that that teaches them that they are the boss ,not you.
Also- are collars Nessecary? She’s never worn one before, but I want to get one so she has her tags on her at all times, and I do attach an AirTag to her harness because she has gotten loose before, so I would like to attach that to her collar. I would not walk her with a collar, but would it be cruel to put her in a collar after never having her wear one for so long?

If you are able to leash train your dog, and actually pay attention to your dog while walking a "flexi leash" (really a retractable leash) is a great tool. Sure, the average person using one are completely clueless but they are not 'absolute garbage'. No way I'm going to deal with the hassle of a static leash longer than 6 feet unless I'm actively training a dog, the retractable leash keeps the line out of the dog's feet and neatly stores it when you need the dog close. The quality leashes have no trouble holding back a 200lbs dog if you have a correctly sized leash.

  • @BayronAnimeOverlorD

I wouldn't recommend them either, mostly the ones that the line is like a cord, once my dog caught me off guard and tried to go after a another dog that was far enough, and I tried to stop her, and I couldn't push the lock button so (stupidly) I tried to stop her by grabbing the leash, and not only I couldn't stop her with the leash, but also I almost chop off my whole finger, the cord is so thing and when the dog runs off the cord goes so fast that can cut thru flesh and bone, I was quick enough to let the cord go, so it only cut part of the flesh of my finger (I needed stitches) but it also kinda burn the part of the flesh from the friction, I know it was dumb from me to grab the leash by the cord, but in those moments of quick events you don't have to much time to think, and also it was my first couple of days with this leash I never had one like this before.
So bottom line, this type of leash, especially the one with a thin cord, can cause a lot of damage, this time was my finger, imagine that same scenario but this time the cord actually tangled with something like your hand or your dog or another dog, literally it can kill it or chop off his paw or something.
As a regular user, please don't use it, it may have its specific applications but for and your dog's safety, stick with a traditional leash.
