I remember back in the late 90s when you were teaching me this ghost pattern using the Jeff Porcaro interpretation of the Bernard Purdy shuffle. I was just beginning drums and it seemed way over my head. Now, I use it all the time in my playing without even thinking about it. It takes a lot of practice but eventually the lightbulb turns on! All the things you taught me back then, counting, rudiments, shuffles, basic jazz and swing patterns, etc... have all taken me to new levels in my playing over the years. I've had several tutors but you were the best, mostly because of your passion. I stumbled across these videos today and couldn't believe it. They are absolutely fantastic, each and everyone of them! Thank you very much for all the "freebie" teaching on your channel. Be groovy man!
Obviously there was no RUclips in the 90s.😂 He was my professional tutor. I took in-person lessons. In the lesson environment, he is a lot more serious and focused, and not as “spazzed”. Damned good drummer!
You’re the most down to earth teacher I’ve ever seen. Love how you break stuff down and talk on a real level ya “little guys” can understand. Oh, I like almonds too.
Thanks for these videos. You've taken much of the frustration out of learning the drums and made it fun again. I was maddeningly frustrated for about 6 months and got no joy out of it. I forgot why I finally picked up the sticks in the first place. The joy is back. Thx.
im a guitarist who plays drums and this is fucking insanely hard for me!!! i know how the beat goes but cant play it yet. give me a week or 2 maybe. best beat ever!! finally tuned machine.
I got so far, with your other videos for this song, but, without sheet music, this is by far the best break down of this rhythm, without having to read music.
I really really needed this! thank you for the instructions, its hard to find drummers that really care about being correct in what John really did. you are the shit!
I've watched a lot of your videos and loved them all. After a few weeks of intermittent practice, I've finally got this rhythm down, at speed, thanks in large part to being able to watch you break it down piece by piece. The best part though, and what keeps me engaged, are the whacky digressions and spontaneous musings. Love it! Other people's videos are so boring and dry in comparison. Your videos are both instructive, technically insightful, *and* entertaining! Thanks!!
What an accessible fella....One of us humans. We just want to learn how to play this. You make it seem so do-able. Genuine interest and excitement. Show us, Teach!
"Where's my other stickkk? 👀... And there's 6 sitting there on top of bass drum lol. However thanks, you broke it down nicely. I bet you play that tune in your head 24/7
At the beginning of the video I was thinking "man this guy is an idiot" but I gotta tell ya, I watched the whole thing and I actually learned something. Thank you!
Hey Terry its John Hancock here. I got kicked off you tube for some of my political comments so im in disguise as Builder John. 😜 anyway i just want to thank you for what you do on your channel. I have learned a lot from your teaching. And to be honest, hanging out with you on your live feeds are about as enjoyable as it can get. So keep up the good work. I assure you, you are a blessing to your followers.👊🏻
You're right, on Purdies shuffle you can barely hear the dotted triplet on the hat's, the main note stand's out but the dot not so much. Bonham's dot's are nearly as prominent as the main note. Yeah you're right! 100%. Purdie also adds a very slight snare choke in-between the his hi hat handwork too. That's a solid groove nicely played. 💙🎼
I must say that you are essentially still playing heal up. It's not the 80s heavy metal heal up, but a seasoned player heal up, where when the beater strikes the bass drum, your heal drops from being relaxed.....
hey terry very good instructions into detail which is good, ive been a bonham fan since I was 15 im now 34, playing the drums on and off, but your videos I pick upnso quick no other teacher shows these grooves beats as good as you, I no it sez tamara but im dan from oz and wish we could meet so u could teach me more... once I get fool in the rain down pat I will post a video, the love for drumming for me is still there and will be burning strong inside till the day I die..I cant get enough the more I learn and skilks I gain I just cant get enough im addicted so strong its not funny, one bloke once said drumming was boring to him I said he needs give up drumming and he didnt like me saying that, well boring sez it all, I also notice you have a premier kit my dads old premier kit is the same as ringos old kit but the swirl goes the other way, its a 1965 root beer swirl birch wood shells even has the bell clip that goes on bass hoop and original bongos im restoration at the moment but I will post a pic soon
Hey Bonzo. Listened to all your videos on this song and others. You are a good teacher. I have this down finally thanks to you but i am still struggling with the bridge. Can you post a short video breaking it down?
love your videos. they are great. I am no where near being able to do the purdie shuffle or fool shuffle or rosanna shuffle but still great to watch. Your heel up and heel down are.... exactly the same :D Keep drumming :) You are a drumming god :) How heavy is your wallet?!!!
Stop spitting those almonds all over the set, Terry! Hahaha!! I could listen to you play (and be your funny self) all day. Thanks for another great vid!
I'm getting close to getting this beat down. However, I'm stuck at that first Grace note i'm not hitting it in the right spot, (that's what she said )😂, just like you in this video, where u struggle with that spot in the beat so it really must be part of the reason why it's such a great Beat, the placement of this note and how it affects the snare hit on the 3. This is probably the 12th time I've watch this video and it is help me tremendously I never thought I'd actually get this beat but now I'm actually very very close I wish I could send you my progress but it is very cool to be able to play this because it is so fucking bad ass. Ty TK
No no...He's a SUPER SERIOUS drummer! That's just his personality. He's so funny. I've been watching his vids since he started posting them. Killer drummer. Great sense of humor. I can watch his videos all day. I wish I had access to these vids when I could actually play!
I also realized watching this video for the 12th time that I was counting wrong I was counting the triplet as a half time count and the hi hat opening was happening on the "+" of "1 + ah". So in this moment I've made progress realizing where I'm making my mistake so I can't wait to get behind my kit and start counting it the right way and see where I'm at.
Hey terry I'm looking for a new ride cymbal I was thinking of getting a paiste 2002 ride. I've only been drumming for almost 2 years. Do you think this the best for me to get?
Id say anybody learning this type of roove should just sit there with a metronome shuffling the hi hat and adding snare ghost notes and the main accent. Once you get that memorised it kinda flows in your arms without a thought and you can mess around with the bass drum pattern
For the love of god! Please, PLEASE break down the ride bell pattern! Why the hell does nobody explain the fucking ride pattern? That's the part that throws a Spaniel in the works!
I've watched this tutorial no less than 4 times all the way through, and every time I think the same 2 things: #1) If you want to know how to play like John Bonham , you go to Terry @ Bonzoleum. #2) "Almond slurry"?.... That's really gross, man; But don't go changin' just to please me, don't change the color of your snare.... Thank you Chicago, good night!
You really need to raise your snare up. It's a very bad way to play ergonomically and you can actually cause injury to your hands /wrists. And your drums are way too muffled. No tone at all. Watch video of Bohnam. Look at his drum placement.
I just love this guy, so down to earth and funny. Great personality

Wait so he taught you in real life? Or through these videos
Obviously there was no RUclips in the 90s.😂 He was my professional tutor. I took in-person lessons. In the lesson environment, he is a lot more serious and focused, and not as “spazzed”. Damned good drummer!
I guess it's kinda off topic but do anyone know of a good place to watch new movies online ?
@Forrest Brennan I watch on flixportal. Just search on google for it :)
@Stephen Gideon Definitely, have been using Flixportal for years myself :)
+bonzoleum I love the ADD nature of your videos. Not to mention you're a good teacher with some chops
Great and humble teacher.
If you listen, you will learn.
We need so much more of this style instruction.
Thank you, Whitney!
You’re the most down to earth teacher I’ve ever seen. Love how you break stuff down and talk on a real level ya “little guys” can understand.
Oh, I like almonds too.
Your instructional video here is near perfection I can’t praise enough 🎉
Thanks for these videos. You've taken much of the frustration out of learning the drums and made it fun again. I was maddeningly frustrated for about 6 months and got no joy out of it. I forgot why I finally picked up the sticks in the first place. The joy is back. Thx.
im a guitarist who plays drums and this is fucking insanely hard for me!!! i know how the beat goes but cant play it yet. give me a week or 2 maybe. best beat ever!! finally tuned machine.
Wow, this is the most helpful fool in the rain drum lesson I've ever found! I got the basic beat down within a couple minutes! Thank you so much.
I got so far, with your other videos for this song, but, without sheet music, this is by far the best break down of this rhythm, without having to read music.
Thank you!
Totally awesome!!!! Have to break it down.
I really really needed this! thank you for the instructions, its hard to find drummers that really care about being correct in what John really did. you are the shit!

Just getting back into drumming after a 16 year hiatus. I appreciate your vids. Very helpful. Snack breaks and all. Haha. Keep'em coming!
My God, you have that beat down so perfectly. I can't play it yet, but I plan to.
Dude you are hilarious a long with a great drum lesson!! Keep it rolling bro.
I had such a hard time with this. Thanks for breaking it down.
I've watched 6 other tutorials of this so far and you do a great job breaking it down 👍🏼 also great camera angle
Funniest quote from this lesson. “I’ll try to make this concise.” Love the Vids Terry. Keep Rockin!
Loved this video Terry sorry I didn’t see it long ago, thoroughly entertaining mate, cheers!!
Your teaching style is so great!
I would definitely have you teach me the drums over anybody else. Your breakdown really gives key detail on playing BONZO..👍
Thanks terry for the kick ass lesson you solved my week long struggle of trying to learn this beat
Awesome breakdown!
What an accessible fella....One of us humans.
We just want to learn how to play this.
You make it seem so do-able.
Genuine interest and excitement.
Show us, Teach!
Thank you very much sincerely, Whitney.
Terry I love ya man! When you took the phone call and hit pause, I LMAO! you zany guy you.
He needs something like a chiuahua dog to vacuum the food after him. Look at all the crap on the floor.
Another GREAT video teaching and entertaining.
best bonzos drumming teacher on YT
It's amusing watching you suppress the ghosts lol
I love this guy he reminds me of my dad
You are the coolest guy to teach us stuff! Thank you. This is really hard! This beat evades me! To play yet…. 😊
Thanks LittlePS!
"Where's my other stickkk? 👀... And there's 6 sitting there on top of bass drum lol. However thanks, you broke it down nicely. I bet you play that tune in your head 24/7
man this literally helped me so much !
At the beginning of the video I was thinking "man this guy is an idiot" but I gotta tell ya, I watched the whole thing and I actually learned something. Thank you!

Took me 6 times watching this but damnit I finally got it Thank You Terry! Your the Man 👍

Yeah you're right! 100%.
Purdie also adds a very slight snare choke in-between the his hi hat handwork too.
That's a solid groove nicely played. 💙🎼
Good funny teacher, you know how to make playing drums easy
Finally! Someone who simplified this for me. Thank you
Thank you!!
Thankyou!!
Thanks Terry, smoother than almond slurry.
Very nice Terry!
Really good lesson!!!
Thanks! explained it perfectly...
Thanks Donny!!
Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!
Excellent video.
That's IT.
the space, ghost notes and dynamics.
Jason Bonham didn't even play it this perfectly live
That's bc Jason Bonham isn't half the drummer his dad was..he doesn't have his groove
I must say that you are essentially still playing heal up. It's not the 80s heavy metal heal up, but a seasoned player heal up, where when the beater strikes the bass drum, your heal drops from being relaxed.....

Thanks, Don!

finish your snack first next time.....or make a vid of snacking skills!
BWA HA HA!!!!!!!! This fucking guy cracks me up!!!!
Stop spitting those almonds all over the set, Terry!
Hahaha!!
I could listen to you play (and be your funny self) all day. Thanks for another great vid!
i want to learn to drum sooooo bad...all i can do is dream...and wach videos...i love BONZOLEUM!!..

Some of the videos show a ghost note on every "and", though yours is more selective. is there a "correct" way to play this?
It's really just the 2 ghost I play here.
Class is in session 🤔👍
Joseph Grasso Been watching Terry's drum videos for years. He's the real deal...BONZO! Enjoy!
Who is this guy? He sounds like he knows how to play, but he's far from serious.
No no...He's a SUPER SERIOUS drummer!
That's just his personality.
He's so funny.
I've been watching his vids since he started posting them. Killer drummer.
Great sense of humor.
I can watch his videos all day.
I wish I had access to these vids when I could actually play!
that's interesting

So in this moment I've made progress realizing where I'm making my mistake so I can't wait to get behind my kit and start counting it the right way and see where I'm at.
Of course I could be wrong😂🤣
can you a drum lesson on bring it on home by led zep
Hey Terry! Can you do a Bonham style tuning video?
Hey terry I'm looking for a new ride cymbal I was thinking of getting a paiste 2002 ride. I've only been drumming for almost 2 years. Do you think this the best for me to get?
That's what bonham used, I have a 22" 2002,actually all my cymbals are 2002s. What did you wind up getting?
Did you set your wallet on the snare? never thought of that, mine always goes in the stick holder mounted on my hi hat stand
I see you buy your shirts at Target too! 😂
Yes-I don't care too much for what's written on them, but they're so comfortable. And they're like 12 bucks.
any legit information on how The Man actually played it? Heel up or down?
How many drum sets do you have?
How thin is that snare
Id say anybody learning this type of roove should just sit there with a metronome shuffling the hi hat and adding snare ghost notes and the main accent. Once you get that memorised it kinda flows in your arms without a thought and you can mess around with the bass drum pattern
Where waiting for the Coke connection!
Terry just one question, I'm wondering why ( if you are a bonham finished fans) that you still didn't show any Ludwig speedking yet... ?
Awesome. Still trying. Terry awesome name mate
Yes-Thank you Terrence!!
Terence
Great band name...Almond Slurry.
AH YES!!!!! Thank you Rhinsac!
I dont even play drums..
Purdie Shuffle....Babylon Sister.....shake it!!!
God
Rool in the Fain
So, I filed my wallet with expired (maxed out) credit cards and worthless receipts. Still can't get that tone...WTF?...LOL
❤️🥁❤️🏁🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🦅
Thank God Terri you gave up drinking, I could just imagine....
Are you the headless drummer now?
Just realized how low to the ground you sit. I thought I sat low.
ruclips.net/video/G8cSe7RvqSM/видео.html Here it is.
have you ever heard the wanton song??? hint hint
I got that snare at a yard sale for 25$
GREAT DRUM!
Dam man, stop eating while teaching Bonzo!!! Lol, great video though
almond nuggets!! lol
2:22...why does he just look at his phone and say "Jesus"??
Jesus was calling but didn't wanna answer.
You are fucking sweet.
The shuffle part isnt even that hard, getting the ride cymbal bell even was a nightmare
For the love of god! Please, PLEASE break down the ride bell pattern! Why the hell does nobody explain the fucking ride pattern? That's the part that throws a Spaniel in the works!
is this dood from outer space... lol...
Don't talk with your mouth full or don't eat before filming!
Dude, what’s with your wallet on your snare?
A great muffler !
@@bonzoleum 🤣
You really need to raise your snare up. It's a very bad way to play ergonomically and you can actually cause injury to your hands /wrists. And your drums are way too muffled. No tone at all. Watch video of Bohnam. Look at his drum placement.
Love the tutorial, but I think this guy failed economics🤣
