Don't add new hauls to the jar for this year. If you continue this challenge next year, as this year's hauls then. No opinion on question two. I'll watch either one. . .
I'd say keep the new books separate and go with the jar instead of one week one shelf as that seems like it's going to just confuse things as its all out the jar anyway. If you did one week one shelf then i'd at least go by genre that way you could just pick that specific colour out the jar and do it that way. ps Happy Christmas/New Year to you.
I would suggest keeping track of all the books you haul, and at the end of the year, any that you didn't read this year gets added to the jar for next year. I would like to still see the one week, one shelf challenge once in a while. I love the idea of both so long as it doesn't cause you to slump! I'll be trying to work through my own physical tbr this year too. :)
I have a huge backlog of mostly non-fiction books which I probably won't end up reading. As you say, you want to read them but when you pick them up... they don't appeal to start reading them right then. I think your idea about unhauling books is great. I'm going to try doing the same. It will be really nice to have less books. I love them but they do take up quite a lot of space. Some I got just to read a chapter in particular, so those I should be able to unhaul if I just set down and read it. I found and started watching your videos today because I was looking for something new to read in fiction. I chose Severance from your recommended list. I've ordered it and I'm looking forward to something new, a new writer to try. I highly recommend Cassandra Rose Clarke. I've just started "Beholden". I've read "The Mad Scientist's Daughter", "Our Lady of the Ice", and "Star's End". Love them all. I hope you try one of them, if you haven't already.
This is going to be great! It could be interesting to combine this with the one week one shelf challenge by reading the shelf of whatever book you pick from the jar.
You could let the TBR jar pick what shelf you read from in "one week, one shelf". Pick a book out, see what shelf it's on and then follow the same read one chapter and continue or unhaul with books on that shelf for that week (you could either start with the book you picked from the jar or just choose a shelf that way but put the paper back in the jar) I second what sb else has said, adding the new books you haven't read by the end of the year to the jar then. For next year, that's a great idea! I'm also going to tackle my TBR next year, though I am putting myself on a book ban 😅 I'm not sure if i'll do a tbr jar or something else, but I definitely want to gameify it somehow
I guess if your slips are color coordinated, you could do your February challenge easily right? You choose a shelf and then pick colors accordingly... I think it could be worth it :) And I guess if you want to work on books you've owned for a while, you shouldn't really add new books to the jar. Either way I'm just happy to watch :) It is sooo satisfying to watch people read books they own - especially for a long time. Can't wait!
1. If you want to read the books you've forgetten about and those who sat on your selves for to long, I'd say don't add the new books you will haul throughout the year. 2. I'd like to see the "one week one self" for February. Even though both challenges serve the same purpose, it would be nice to see some change. BUT you channel, your rules :) Thank you for your content, it was great to enjoy it throughout the year. Can't wait for your 2022 stats and to see what you have in store for 2023 !
1 all books should go in tbr jar plus the books you hauled. 2 keep feb 1 shelf 1 week for fun. I think I am going to join this challenge sounds like fun
I vote 1. Don't put your new books in the jar 2. No one week one shelf. This is like doing one week one shelf every month. I really like this challenge!
LOVE the idea of the jar and the read one chapter to decide to read vs DNF. I have 500 books in my Kindle App - need a solid way to get through those.- thank you for the idea!!!! I agree with several others, keep the One Week, One Shelf - have your jar pick decide which shelf. The purpose of the jar is to get you to read your books you have had for awhile, correct? If so, wait until the end of the year to add those to the jar. This will also highlight what you have bought and not read to help improve your book buying choices going forward.
I’ve been doing this for the past two years and it’s great! I have reduced the amount of books I buy. The other challenge that I do is to finish series and only can start a new one if I have finished one. I did quite good this year.
I totally love this idea! And I´m also going to join in doing the same with my books. 1. Focus on the backlog 2. yes do One Week One Shelf challenge for February :)
I think combine the 2 challenges. Pull 1 from the jar and that is the shelf you have 1 week/1 shelf from and that's the first pick for that week's challenge. 😊
Ahh I'm doing the same thing with my own physical TBR, I also got a jar from the dollar store that was not a dollar haha! Mine are all one color to keep it a mystery 1. Yes I'd add new books 2. I'd like to see 1 week one shelf
1 - Keep a list of what you haul and those you don't read get added to the jar at the end of the year. 2 - Keep the one week one shelf challenge. It is a fun challenge to watch.
1. I think you could put new books (that you haven't already read from your library) in a separate jar. If you feel like reading a newer book, you can grab from that jar. And at the end of the year, you'll already have them written on slips to dump in the big jar. 2. One week one shelf is always fun. :-)
I say combine the challenges into one. As you have the jar divided into genres by colours you could still choose a shelf at random then pull paper from that jar that matches that shelf (genre). Still doing basically the same thing as one week one shelf and less work for you. Oh and no new books added. The 400 should be enough 😁
1. I wouldn't add the new books to the jar just yet as part of the challenge is to read some of the oldest books on your shelves. 2. I would love to see the one book one shelf in February! Great video and looking forward to it!
I think the jar should just be for backlog books, but I think you can still do the February challenge since it'll likely eliminate some of the books in the jar anyway!
Make that goal as precise as possible - if it's a backlog challenge, don't add your new hauls. I would definitely keep track of them, maybe make a second jar for new books. If it's an unread challenge, then yes, you would need to add your new books. Unread challenges are discouraging for me because my monthly reads and hauls tend to cancel each other out. 😂 Good luck! 🤞
I’ve done the same thing this year. I put all my backlog TBR in a jar and am picking at least 1 per month!! So excited to see how you do with this is 2023!! 🥳
I am sooo on board with this! I would say : 1. Not adding the books and 2. Doing the special 1 week 1 shelve challenge in Feb instead of this one (I love this challenge every time!) but whatever you do, I am sure I'll love it!
Such a cool challenge ! I'd suggest : 1. Add the books from your hauls in the jar, they're also part of your tbr now ! 2. In February, One Week, One Shelf !
I am doing the same thing with reading my own books in 2023. I have way too many books to read. I don’t put the new books in my jar. I have them on a shelf.
How about you combine the challenges for February? So pick a book from the jar and read from the shelf of that book. If the book from the jar is the only one unread left on that shelf pick another one from the jar.
most of my books are ebooks because they're cheaper and I'm basically doing the same challenge with them! I checked my goodreads and I have some unread books there that I own and I added them in 2016... Let the purge begin of unread books begin!!
I love this challenge! I've made a similar one for myself that I started last month. The only difference is that I added a chance category that has "prompts" instead of book titles, so like "A new author" or "More than 500 pages" and when I pull one of those I get to chose a book that matches the prompt. Those go back in the jar afterwards and can thus be picked several times.
Yessss. I’m doing the same. I say focus on the back log and to do one week one shelf challenge. I’m not going on a book buying ban but I am limiting my purchases. I have to read 10 before I can buy any others
You should just unhaul the ones that are "i don't really want to read you" in your mindset, it's so freaking refreshing to just get rid of them and only have books you're super excited about on your shelves 😄 I did a massive unhaul recently and filled up like 10 paper bags, and it was just amazing to get rid of those! I also feel like if the book is either on an online audiobook service or I can get it from the library and I'm kinda "meh" about the book, it's just easier to get rid of it and if I sometime in the future really want to read it (haven't happened yet), I can just get it from the library! And yes, I'm also planning read my physical tbr during 2023! But I don't have the power to write down all of my unread books on paper so I just used Excel and will choose with a random number generator instead 🤩 But it sounds amazing to have one week every month (I probably will do every second month or so) to go with the jar!
I vote backlog only for the TBR jar and yes, definitely do one week one shelf! :) I've been doing an owned TBR challenge every year for several years now. I read equally fiction and non-fiction, so I challenge myself to read 12 of each from my own collection each year. That way I'm still reading my own stuff but have lots of room to read library books, too. I only buy or receive about the same amount each year (24), so it tends to work out well, especially since I rarely read only 24 of my owned books. I look forward to the vlogs!
I think it would be wiser to focus on your backlog, and I like the idea of doing that same challenge the whole month of February. It sounds quite fun to me :P
My TBR is a mix of the (17+) unread books on my shelf & books I will be getting from the library. I have about 8 books that are in the "read or unhaul" category, but a vast majority of my books I read from the library or digitally so not waiting on my shelf. I vote new books stay out of the jar till next year if they are unread, otherwise it is unfair to your existing overdue TBR. Maybe next year I will do this for my digital shelf after I finish my physical one.
It looks so pretty! 😂 I think focusing on backlog only makes more sense. I also think you should just do this challenge in Feb as well because trying something new would be fun! And the jar is so pretty 😍 lol!
I just finished setting up my read it or unhaul it challenge for 2023. I will read/ unhaul books from my TBR that I have since 2016. I have 84 😱. This was the year that I discovered booktube, so there are many books that I’m not interested in anymore. I will pick a few ones every month and by the end of the year I will unhaul everything that I didn’t get to, or I’m not interested in.
I hope all is well. 1. I say do not put your new books in the jar. 2. This is a hard one, maybe do a combo of both, one month do one week one shelf and the next month the jar one. - idk just an idea. Good luck, you got this. Happy readings!
my thoughts: 1. The plastic bag is somehow more enchanting to me than the glass jar LOL! I dunno... I kind of love it. 2. I think it would be better to focus on your backlog for this particular challenge (so not adding new books to it) 3. I think you should just do this challenge instead of doing this one AND the one week, one shelf since they are so similar anyway. 4. This sounds so fun and I can't wait to see what books you pull from the Plastic Bag of Books
Hello! So excited for this challenge! I think for February you can do a mix of both: you can sort one colour per week from another jar and then use the jar to go through them! It's like killing two birds with one stone 👌🏼 I can't wait for the stats! That's definite my fav video! 😍😍
Keep the jar for the old books so you can see progress. Maybe keep all your 2023 books together on a shelf so you can separate them out. Then if you don’t read the 2023 ones by year end they go in the jar. 🧐 Also keep the February shelf challenge it’s fun 🙂
I vote for Read it or unhaul it for the month of February. I wouldn't include recent hauled books, since I think the challenge should focus more on books that you've had for more than a year without reading
I am doing the same! I have to read my TBR before I can buy more.... Let the odds be ever in our favors. FOCUS ON YOUR BACKLOG at least for the 1st half of the year then maybe reevaluate
1. No new books in the jar/bag. Knowing you are reducing the number of books in the jar will make you feel more accomplished and the point of this challenge is to find motivation to read the books you have forgotten or lost interest in. It's easier to find motivation to read new books. 2. Only this one. I think that will also make you more creative with new challenges. That way, if you feel you want to tackle an specific shelf or genre, you'll have to come up with a new challenge 🤭
I'm planning to do this in 2023 as well! I'm handling series by putting the title of the series on the paper slip and putting one copy in there per book in the series. That way when I draw it it's just a "continue this series" rather than keep track of which exact titles are in there.
looking forward to this! I counted myself and with the Christmas gifts I am up to 130 unred books. yikes 😬 I didn't read much at all in the pandemic this year I red 50 books again even with a four month hiatus. I was down to twenty unred books before but the hand me downs and so fourth kept comming 😂
I was reading an article about cozy fantasy and the actually mentioned Beware of Chicken and I thought of you immediately because I have never heard anyone speak of this! I would suggest Thornhedge by T. Kingfisher. It is a novella and a retelling of Sleeping Beauty but from the fairy that imprisoned her. So cozy and sweet.
I vote no to adding hauls to the jar. Your recent videos motivated me to go through some of the oldest/most skipped over books on my shelf last night. Only kept three out of a huge stack 😁
I recently went through all my physical books and wrote them down to do random monthly picks as well but I really like your idea of reading a chapter then decide to continue or not. I am terrible at DNF'ing and causing reading slumps for myself because I don't DNF as much as I should. I did marginally better in 2022 then in the past but I'd really like to get better at allowing myself to just say 'no' and moving on. Reading a chapter or two seems like a great way to both force you pick something up , that you'd otherwise ignore, but also give yourself the freedom to hit a limit and say 'nope' for those ones that just don't work. I may have to do this myself going forward :)
If it were me I would clear one shelf just for all my new purchases. When you do the one week one shelf you can do it off of your new Shelf and then just randomize the numbers based on what's on the Shelf. That way if next year you want to do a different challenge you have all your new stuff separated from your old stuff.
Oooh this is such a fun take on the challenge! Love the higher stakes hahaha. I’m doing something similar and am stoked to find someone whose TBR is even bigger than my 350 LOL
Yes, to one week one shelf, and No to add new books to the jar. Add any unread 2023 haul books to the jar for 2024 if you continue the challenge then! I’m looking forward to another year with you! I picked up a couple books I never would have unless I was watching your channel! Happy New Year🎉
I’m aiming to get to a zero physical tbr this year using a book jar too. I’m doing a book buying ban at the same time as I tried last year and did really well until August/September when I bought a stupid amount of books. I think add new books at the end of the year, the one shelf challenge sounds great.
I'm doing a similar challenge. I have been dealing with some health issues that give me migraines, so physical reading can be totally impossible. Therefore, I collected a list of every physical book I own that has an audiobook and my goal is to read at least half of them this year. I'm only going to keep the physical copy if it's a new favorite that I plan to reread or loan to friends
1. Do I add the books from my hauls to the jar?
2. In February, do I do my classic "One Week, One Shelf" challenge or this one all month?
2. You could choose one week, one genre and only pick from that genre from the glass
1, Don’t add the new books to the jar
2. One week one shelf PLEASE is my favorite 😍
1. No, don't add new books.
2. One week, one shelf challenge 🙂
I could but them in the cabinet instead of the bookshelves!
I agree!
1. Add new books at the end of the year if you haven't read them.
2. Yes to 1 week 1 shelf. I love that challenge.
I second this!
SO EXCITED!!! ❤️🕎💚💚🕎❤️🕎📙📙📚📚💚💚🕎🎄🎄🎁🎁❤️💚📙📙📚📚📙📙💚🕎🎄🎄🎁🎁🎄🕎💚💚🕎📙📙📙📙📙💚❤️🎄🎁🎁🎄🕎📙📚📙🕎❤️🎄
You could let the TBR jar pick what shelf you read from in "one week, one shelf". Pick a book out, see what shelf it's on and then follow the same read one chapter and continue or unhaul with books on that shelf for that week (you could either start with the book you picked from the jar or just choose a shelf that way but put the paper back in the jar)
I second what sb else has said, adding the new books you haven't read by the end of the year to the jar then.
I think it could be worth it :)
And I guess if you want to work on books you've owned for a while, you shouldn't really add new books to the jar.
Either way I'm just happy to watch :)
It is sooo satisfying to watch people read books they own - especially for a long time. Can't wait!
1. If you want to read the books you've forgetten about and those who sat on your selves for to long, I'd say don't add the new books you will haul throughout the year.
2. I'd like to see the "one week one self" for February. Even though both challenges serve the same purpose, it would be nice to see some change.
BUT you channel, your rules :)
Thank you for your content, it was great to enjoy it throughout the year. Can't wait for your 2022 stats and to see what you have in store for 2023 !
Read it or unhaul it!
I love this challenge idea. I still would like to see your 1 week, 1 shelf challenge in February. And focus on the backlog. ^_^
1 all books should go in tbr jar plus the books you hauled. 2 keep feb 1 shelf 1 week for fun. I think I am going to join this challenge sounds like fun
I vote for you not putting new acquisitions in the jar and still do one-week one-shelf in Feb.
One week one shelf challenge is my fav, i always look forward to your vlogs in Feb. Please keep it🥺
So far it's the option that's winning. To be honest, it would be the easiest one. That way I get to pick what I want to read on the shelf lol
@@BookswithEmilyFox Yes and it makes for an amazing vlog, either you end up loving the book or absolutely hating it xD
One week one shelf! And i would keep out the new books.
Absolutely add them to the jar!! How fun.
And definitely still do one week one shelf!
One week, one shelf is a mustt
I vote
1. Don't put your new books in the jar
2. No one week one shelf. This is like doing one week one shelf every month.
I really like this challenge!
So fun! Definitely a challenge. Looking forward to those surprise 5 stars 🤩
LOVE the idea of the jar and the read one chapter to decide to read vs DNF. I have 500 books in my Kindle App - need a solid way to get through those.- thank you for the idea!!!! I’ve been doing this for the past two years and it’s great! I have reduced the amount of books I buy. The other challenge that I do is to finish series and only can start a new one if I have finished one. I did quite good this year.
I totally love this idea! And I´m also going to join in doing the same with my books.
1. Focus on the backlog
2. yes do One Week One Shelf challenge for February :)
I think combine the 2 challenges. Pull 1 from the jar and that is the shelf you have 1 week/1 shelf from and that's the first pick for that week's challenge. 😊
I hope you get some yellows!
Ahh I'm doing the same thing with my own physical TBR, I also got a jar from the dollar store that was not a dollar haha!
Mine are all one color to keep it a mystery
1. Yes I'd add new books
1. I'd say wait until the end of year before adding your new books.
2. new for the whole month!
I say combine the challenges into one. As you have the jar divided into genres by colours you could still choose a shelf at random then pull paper from that jar that matches that shelf (genre). Still doing basically the same thing as one week one shelf and less work for you.

Great video and looking forward to it!
Have a happy & healthy new year, book friend!! 🥺❤🎄
xx
I think the jar should just be for backlog books, but I think you can still do the February challenge since it'll likely eliminate some of the books in the jar anyway!
This sounds like such a fun challenge! Looking forward to watching the journey next year ☺
An idea for February is to draw one out of the jar then read off the shelf that the book was on.
One week, one shelf ❤
In February, do the jar all month. And yes add new ones. It'll be exciting.
I wanna do this challenge with you! It's so needed. Mutual torture! 🤣
1 week 1 shelf and focus on the backlog is my vote
Make that goal as precise as possible - if it's a backlog challenge, don't add your new hauls. I would definitely keep track of them, maybe make a second jar for new books. If it's an unread challenge, then yes, you would need to add your new books. Unread challenges are discouraging for me because my monthly reads and hauls tend to cancel each other out. 😂 Good luck! 🤞
Yes I love this idea!
I definitely need to focus on physical TBR this year also. Great challenge!
I’ve done the same thing this year. I put all my backlog TBR in a jar and am picking at least 1 per month!! So excited to see how you do with this is 2023!! 🥳
Cool challenge!!! i would focus on the backlog.
I am sooo on board with this! I would say : 1. Not adding the books and 2. Doing the special 1 week 1 shelve challenge in Feb instead of this one (I love this challenge every time!) but whatever you do, I am sure I'll love it!
Such a cool challenge !
I'd suggest :
1. Add the books from your hauls in the jar, they're also part of your tbr now !
2. In February, One Week, One Shelf !
I am doing the same thing with reading my own books in 2023. I have way too many books to read. I don’t put the new books in my jar. I have them on a shelf.
Stay with one week shelf!
How about you combine the challenges for February? So pick a book from the jar and read from the shelf of that book. If the book from the jar is the only one unread left on that shelf pick another one from the jar.

I think you should add new books - for fun. And keep February as it was, I love 1 week, 1 shelf! 😘
Excited for this!!
Yessss. I’m doing the same. I say focus on the back log and to do one week one shelf challenge. I’m not going on a book buying ban but I am limiting my purchases. I have to read 10 before I can buy any others

Happy New Year. Enjoy all your reading!
This sounds like so much fun! I still want to put a vote in for one week, one shelf for February. Happy New Year!
For February you could switch to a "One Week, one Genre" and only pick books from a certain colour for that week.
I already know that this is going to be painful 😅
Why? Reading shouldn't be painful 😞
For february, I suggest ‘one week : one shelf’, but picking the shelf based on one ‘read it or unhaul it’ from your jar ☺️
I love when you do one week one shelf so I vote for that!
I think you should do February one week one genre. And then you pick the color from the jar
Please still do the one week one shelf. It’s always amazing when you pick something and are surprised by it
I think it would be wiser to focus on your backlog, and I like the idea of doing that same challenge the whole month of February. It sounds quite fun to me :P
My TBR is a mix of the (17+) unread books on my shelf & books I will be getting from the library. I have about 8 books that are in the "read or unhaul" category, but a vast majority of my books I read from the library or digitally so not waiting on my shelf.

Happy readings!
my thoughts:
1. The plastic bag is somehow more enchanting to me than the glass jar LOL! I dunno... I kind of love it.
2. I think it would be better to focus on your backlog for this particular challenge (so not adding new books to it)
I would add them to the jar once they're a year old in your collection, that's what I do anyway. I think one week one shelf for February.
I am doing the same! I have to read my TBR before I can buy more.... Let the odds be ever in our favors. FOCUS ON YOUR BACKLOG at least for the 1st half of the year then maybe reevaluate
focusing on the backlog makes the most sense to me
I love a good read it or unhaul it challenge
I vote you focus on your backlog and then add them next year.
I also vote 1 week 1 shelf.
Please do one week one shelf, I really love it! :D
I'm planning to do this in 2023 as well! I'm handling series by putting the title of the series on the paper slip and putting one copy in there per book in the series. That way when I draw it it's just a "continue this series" rather than keep track of which exact titles are in there.
looking forward to this! I counted myself and with the Christmas gifts I am up to 130 unred books. yikes 😬
I didn't read much at all in the pandemic this year I red 50 books again even with a four month hiatus. I was down to twenty unred books before but the hand me downs and so fourth kept comming 😂
I'm doing something similar to get rid of my enormous tbr hahaha glad to have some support through your challenge, Emily! ❤️
So proud of you Emily and love unhauls 🎄📙🕎🕎🎄❤️📙🎁🎁📚📚📚📙🎄🎄❤️❤️❤️💚💚❤️📙🕎🕎🎄❤️💚❤️❤️📙🕎🕎❤️❤️🎄📙🕎📙📚📚📚📚🎄❤️💚💚
I vote read it or unhaul it for the whole month of February. Just concentrate on the back list.
If it were me I would clear one shelf just for all my new purchases. When you do the one week one shelf you can do it off of your new Shelf and then just randomize the numbers based on what's on the Shelf. That way if next year you want to do a different challenge you have all your new stuff separated from your old stuff.
Awesome idea!
I'm also going to read a lot of my owned books. But almost all I have already read, so it's a rereading challenge for me
Oooh this is such a fun take on the challenge! Love the higher stakes hahaha. I’m doing something similar and am stoked to find someone whose TBR is even bigger than my 350 LOL
Hope you had a great Merry Christmas Emily 💚💚❤️❤️🎄💚🕎📚📚🎁📖📖🎁❤️❤️💚🎄🎄🎄🕎🕎❤️🕎📙📙🎄💚🕎❤️🕎🎄📙🎁🎁📖📖📖📚📚❤️🕎💚🎄📙📙📙🎄💚❤️❤️❤️💚🎄📙
Yes, to one week one shelf, and No to add new books to the jar. Add any unread 2023 haul books to the jar for 2024 if you continue the challenge then! I’m looking forward to another year with you! I picked up a couple books I never would have unless I was watching your channel! Happy New Year🎉
Just the TBR !! New books should be for another challenge 💖🔥😃
Backlog! Good idea!
I am working on reading my physical TBR as well so I would do the new way just for a month or two and see how it goes
Do 1 week, 1 shelf
And just keep the old books in this challenge imo.
I also have about 400 unread books…I should probably do this challenge!
I’m aiming to get to a zero physical tbr this year using a book jar too. I’m doing a book buying ban at the same time as I tried last year and did really well until August/September when I bought a stupid amount of books.
I think add new books at the end of the year, the one shelf challenge sounds great.
I would include the books you all to make sure your entire collection gets love!
This is a GENIUS idea!! I really need to do this - my physical TBR is a bit ridiculous at this point 😅
What a great idea!! I think I'll do the same!
One week one shelf please 😊
