A cool fact is that Franz Halder who has those diary entries each turn is actually the person that the german player is taking control of in this game.
His war diary was interesting; his memoirs, less so. General Von Thoma's accounts were more to the point and honest, since he was being secretly recorded while a prisoner, after his capture at El-Alamein. Up to that date, he'd spent more combat time in a tank turret than anyone in the Heeres(Spain, late '36 to Egypt, late '42).
I haven't played this in like eight years, but it seems like AGN is in trouble. Low fuel and 77% operational seems really bad to me. In this game at some point you hit a wall. As the soviets get tons of reinforcements, a defensive advantage in certain terrains, and when they shift to a defensive posture, and you are no longer in blitz posture it becomes pretty hard, plus there is the mud........
For AGN it is actually possible to take both Riga and Kaunas on turn two. Kaunas can be taken by just 16th Army, if you give it a little help from PzGr3 on turn 1 (just a single attack into the hex SW of Kaunas). After you take Riga everything to the west is cut off and can be mopped ut at your leisure with 18th Army. Swing PzGr4 east on turn 3 and 4, meet up with PzGr3 at Daugavpils and you'll have everything NE of Kaunas bagged too. Depending on how smart you are about pathing and fuel use you might need to use the Luftwaffe to resupply fuel to PzGr4 once or twice.
In the north, it might have been better to push the 18A infantry forward, to hold and screen so you retain more ground. The rest of the junk will die when you take Riga anyways.
At this point in the war the Panzer IIIs might be more the short barreled 50mm L\42 guns with only some early Js and Ls bringing the long 50s L\60. the long barrel 50mm gun was a temporary response to the soviet armor prior to panzer 4s being shifted over to the 75mm L\43 gun from their L\24 gun. it is important to remember that the 3 and 4 were designed as a pair with the 3 being the anti tank tank and the 4 being the infantry support tank.
Well, with AGN losing tanks, the fuel situation will improve! And the INF did sign-up for some nice head-to-head battles; they did NOT sign-up for freezing to death! (Historical spoiler ;-p) Looking forward to see what the computer does near Riga--usually you trade men to keep space, BUT, they have a lot left alive up there to maybe form a reasonable defense. So will they move forward or not? Seems like they just sort of held where they were, which is reasonable.
Even with hindsight, I don't think you're doing badly. Really worried that, if you don't have the PP, you won't be able to confront der Fuhrer whenever he makes a boo-boo. Like his obsession with the Caucasus oil fields.
The funny thing is that was the best decision he made in the war. Should of ignored the push to Moscow first go south. Get the oil. Go north. South in hignsight was the most important direction
been waiting for this all day pretty much
