- We all make mistakes and when I was starting out as CEO of Patreon I made a big one that taught me a lot about myself. Here's a follow-up to my epic fails video that I published a few months back, where I do a deep dive into my most epic fail of all. This was a tough one, but as with every mistake you make, you always learn something about yourself.

I was afraid to upload this. Doing it anyway.
Thanks for this. Have a great day and say hi to Nat from a random internet user.
Really this upload is what scares you? Actively CENSORING the free speech of honest creators? Doesn't seem to bother you at all. Joining in with the Marxist fascist culling the internet of anyone brave enough to speak truth to power, that doesn't bother you?
Your transparency is your greatest virtue.
You don't need me to tell you this. I just want you to know I think you are a very good person. You are honest and transparent. You care about others and your own sensibility. You are empathetic and thoughtful. Anyone who has spent any time following what you do will understand that. Thank you for being you, and thank you for helping creators all over the globe make a fair and genuine living from their work.
@@Usul Really ? Canceling creators for thought crimes is not what I would call honest and transparent.
For a guy who is the ceo of patreon, involved in multiple bands and who knows what else, I truly don’t understand how you’re able to make a such a good video. Fair play to you!
Thank you for sharing this story. But I disagree with the premise of this video. You didn't do anything wrong. Those "journalists" were just psychopaths with an audience and they were publishing misleading information about you for fast easy clickbait cash. There's a reason why Gawker got sued into bankruptcy. I also recognize that you, as the CEO of Patreon, may not be able to state things as plainly as I just did without consequences. 🤷
I absolutely agree 100%
yeah this. especially if you weren't making money from patreon I don't see how your involvement was relevant.
Not disclosing he was CEO of Patreon was a bad move. Not an unethical, terrible move. Just not a good move, because it opened him up to speculation that he was hiding something.
If Jack had disclosed he was CEO of Patreon, the story could have been completely different. Look, we spent $12K on this tour, but we gained x number of patrons who are pledging $x per song we release. Jack could have looked like the business genius we now know him to be.
Or maybe not. Maybe it would have gone completely different. It's good to think about how things could have gone, to inform how we do things going forward.
on point!
@@OliverBatchelor you lose less. That's the whole point of this video Jack put up. Amazing how many people in these comments think they're supporting Jack by completely ignoring the lesson learned that he's trying to pass on.
Check it out Jack. Patreon and Pomplamoose are separate identities. The people who would criticize you for being the CEO of Patreon, and reflect that back on whether Pomplamoose is financially successful are the problem with the internet. When you said that the Pomplamoose fans are what came to your defense. THOSE, those are the only people that actually matter to you. Your fan base is everything. The rest is just noise. Don't let these people get you down. You shouldn't be ashamed of divulging that or not. I found your band because of your music. I don't care what your "full time" job is. I don't care if your net worth is $1.00 or $100,000,000,000.00. I venture to guess that your real fans, they don't care either. Keep up the killer music. I love your stuff.
Respectfully, Someone who loves to ignore the internet masses.

Jack: Jack Conte, CEO of Patreon
Hey Jack. I'm 72 & love your passion for both Patreon & Pomplamoose. I love what you & Natalie create & I truly love that you have given RUclips creators the ability to make a living bringing their content to us. Haters gonna hate, screw 'em. Be true to yourself & be good to people & you will never go wrong.
Yo, I'm 64 & I'm smitten by them too.
I tripped over Pomplamoose about 6 months ago (Bust your kneecaps) and have watched dozens of their videos without knowing that Jack is CEO of Patreon until I saw this. Patreon is something I have come to believe in (and which is long overdue). Jack & Nataly's openness and honesty about both the creative process and the business model is educational and refreshing. After watching this video, I came here to write pretty much EXACTLY what you had already written. But you did it so well, all I can say is "Whatever Jack says goes twice for me". Keep up the good work and may you all prosper with the fruits of your passionate hard labor. I'm a process guy and I love your music and everything that goes into making it.
Thanks so much Jack for your absurd transparency. The "mistake" is one thing (although I think this was really not a super clear mistake on your part while you were at it), but the interpretation of that being a mal-intent is truely horrendous! It's like they were misrepresenting your thoughts and intentions, something to which only you have true acces, still other people hiJacked it (sorry, bad pun).
This story really helps with my way less big kind of a storm on a community post, where I formulated poll answers and though to be a bit funny. It was about opinion on what the line was between plagiarism, so kinda fragile topic, and people saw in the "funny extra's", which took a bit of a fun dig at stereotypes in the genre of jazz, that I tried to control the outcome of the poll to what I hoped it to be. Totally not comparable with the gravity of your story, but I guess some people really are preset to view something from the worst possible outcome, while ignorance (or bad taste in jokes) might suffice.
If more people would apply Hanlon's Razor, this wouldn't happen I guess: 'Never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence or ignorance'.
Absurd transparency. The quirky cousin of radical candor.
Love hearing your journey, the good, the bad and the sometimes ugly side of being an entrepreneur. Keep up the great work Jack. And by the way, from one creator to another, THANK YOU for creating Patreon. It has certainly been a blessing to our family.
I'm thankful that a guy like you exists in this world.
Jack I’m so impressed by this video. Your work ethic is inspiring to so many of us.
Thank you for sharing - authenticity really shines thru in this attention economy
I love you, CEO of Patreon Jack! Lol. And the people who have been here with you and know you do not question your ethics. But I know it's hard, like, the way you communicate on this channel really speaks to me and really helps motivate me in my personal and artistic journey. I find your attitude, ideas and accomplishments very inspiring, and the way you speak, the enthusiasm, it's captivating, to me. To _me,_ because I guess I think in a lot of the same ways you do. We are dreamers, never-give-uppers, artists. Most people are taught, by their parents, people who fear for them and want the best for them, not to take risks, to walk the safe path. We tend to reject that, and that means that there are a lot of people who don't relate to us, and are even adamantly against one of the core fundamentals of our being: to dream big, work extremely hard, and to reframe failures as lessons. We can't please everyone, the internet is everyone (a lot of angry, unfiltered everyone). Not to mention, controversy gets views. But look at what you have accomplished because of who you are. I know you've already learned this lesson, but don't ever let their hate change the parts of you that you love.
Just posted one of those “how much I made on RUclips” videos and showed how after gear purchases it was a net loss. Thankful for Patreon which made me 10x what I made on RUclips as a smaller creator on this platform specifically.
bro ur the ceo of patreon lmao
love you Jack. thanks for existing, you beautiful human being!
ha, that’s the internet in a nutshell. one half will roast you for what you DID say/write and the other half will roast you for what you DIDN’T say/write.
Why didn't you say/write?😡
People who say it can't be done, shouldn't interrupt those who are DOING IT. Keep on rockin.
One of the things I like about you Jack is how freaking OPEN you are about everything you do. The highs, the lows and the fuck ups. It's all out here in the open. Don't stop doing what you do and don't let the bastards grind you down.
Brother, being at the show in Nashville, and then seeing you post that article made me even more grateful for the tour, your music and artistry. Big fan since Always The Season, fan of watching you crank a Memory Man on a track, fan of the hard work you do, and the impact you make. Press on!
Hey Jack just quick comment to know is quick as would like to react and say don't ever doubt yourself or closest round you.. let alone how much power you have as have the weight of everyone who got a chance to live and create and wont dare not stand with you if ever calls for the need.
Anyway it's hard to say anything bout sounding same as what I got flack for as well, whatever still in hell yet just wanna say thank you for finding a way to let us enjoy creators as just for now a watcher :) Hey Jack just quick comment to know is quick as would like to react and say don't ever doubt yourself or closest round you.. let alone how much power you have as have the weight of everyone who got a chance to live and create and wont dare not stand with you if ever calls for the need.

Ironically for me, that blog post about that tour was how I found out about Pomplamoose. It wasn’t until recently that I learned you were the CEO of Patreon. My first reaction when I connected those dots was “this dude is playing 4D chess, he’s got a cool story.” It also made me comfortable with the fact that I make a good living outside of music, but music is my creative art that I want people to identify me with more than my day job. Keep doing you, my man. You’re an inspiration.
FWIW, you are one of the people that gives me hope and inspires me the most. TBH, I don't really know much about your personal life, but the joy and fulfillment you get from music collaboration is bursting out of every video you're part of (all 147 bands you play with lol). Plus, you launched one of the most influential companies in the world around a positive idea. Seemingly, it has changed whole sectors of the art world and the lives of so many people who would otherwise get overlooked, exploited, or discouraged from their passion. The creative community never had so many of its members fed, sheltered, and free from micromanagers. It has implications on all of our lives.
It appears that everything in your life is perfectly aligned with your own values. That's a unbelievable achievement, it's hard just to fight being corrupted, to not compromise any value... That part I've proudly managed, but I'm yet to build a replacement, and I've been labeled by the system a whole bunch of things that communicate, bad apple. That happens to many, but seeing you, knowing that it's possible, is helping and inspiring.
I hope you'll be able to have a show in Omaha soon,
Much love.
I always loved you guys but had NO idea that you guys were the founders/CEO of Patreon, a platform I respect soooo much. Gosh, now I double admire you!! you didn't do anything wrong. Everything is experience, whether good or bad. And you guys have done SO well!! Congrats!! Robert from S.Paulo, Brazil
Man, you're such a huge inspiration for myself in the whole senses of the word. I mean, got a band that's about to be orn (with my bf) and also work in a company, not as CEO haha but your 360 vision in every aspect, creative, strategic, financial... the talent you own and imprint in each thing in the best way, is amazing. Just so you know, I admire you a ton. greetings from Colombia! 💛
Thank you for sharing. I am terrified of making a mistake like this, and I totally would've removed the line about Patreon thinking it would've just felt like an advertisement otherwise. But your sharing this raises my courage up another notch.
Dude you’re like a John Green level deconstructer. You make sense of your life and the world around you in a way that isn’t just compelling but downright therapeutic.
I find the videos you post here to be really helpful in ways that often have nothing to do with the actual subject of the content. Just watching you untangle the nuances of big daunting stuff like this actually helps me untangle stuff going on in my life and career. I doubt I’m alone in that. Please keep talking to your camera :)
Being CEO of Patreon is the feather in your Pomplamoose cap!!! I have followed you for a while now (quite a while actually) and have always admired your 120% effort to everything you do - that's why Pomplamoose is successful and definitely why Patreon is successful!
I am so grateful that you & Natalie have invited me along for the journey, and I would love to meet you guys at some point (puts note on bucket list)
Please, one favour . . . don't stop making awesome Pomplamoosey music !!!!
Pitchfork in 2014: Jack Conte doesn't know how to run a business!
Jack Conte in 2021: Running one of the biggest crowd-funding businesses out there.
Jack! Thanks for sharing. Pomplamoose was the first content that I started actively consuming on RUclips. I remember seeing that blog post and being really interested in the financial breakdown. I also separately remember being super stoked about Patreon, its fundraising, and subsequent success. However, I never was aware of the flak you got.
I appreciate this candid reflection. Thank you both for being a big source of inspiration for me!
Love your whole vibe, Jack. Thanks for your honesty and openness. I've been a big Pomplamoose fan for a couple of years, and only just yesterday learned that you're the CEO of patreon! My respect for you went way up, not down. Knowing your complete story is very inspiring. Keep being YOU! 👍
I stumbled on Pomplamoose for the first time not too long ago. I think everyone has heard of Patreon. Finding out he is the CEO of Patreon was mind-blowing. Super inspiring!
Dude.......so so glad I stumbled on this. Now I’m going down the Pamplamouse vortex on RUclips.......I have never enjoyed watching a keyboardist like you. LOVE your energy and heart.......keep being you. Love and purity of heart wins every time.
When I read the article about the tour, I must admit, I didn't know you were the founder of Patreon. I discovered that much later in the day and I was like 'ah, OK. High 5'. I didn't go back and re-read your article about the tour any differently. I really enjoy your music videos and the way you literally bounce up and down on your keyboard stool. There is a passion that is infectous and this video here about your epic fail has a clickbait title, but it just makes you more human to me. If you were the person those haters said you were, you wouldn't have bothered with this video. Loving all your output and I think Patreon is a great concept and should be lauded as such.
Jack, you are one of my biggest inspirations as an artist, as a creative, and as an entrepreneur. I remember listening to you and Natalie’s episode of Ear Biscuits over and over again because I was so impressed by your efforts as artists. Creative energy just radiates off you and I think that people are moved by that because the desire to create is just so human. And you are constantly trying to make it happen, which not everyone does. Thank you for your transparency. I’m glad we can all learn and grow together
Didnt know till now you are actually the CEO of patreon. What i do know is that you are the most energetic player of scary pockets and pomplamoose. The joy and positive vibe you bring when playing is so inspiring. plz never pull the plug on those two things. They really bring joy to my life. The crazy funky rearrangements amaze me each time. The way everything is put together is so high quality. You are the real artists of this time. Probably impossible to tour in Europe? Grts from Belgium and keep up the good work.
I'm so glad you worked out a workflow so that you can still enjoy making your art. I've been watching your videos since I watched Nataly move in with you, found via My Terrible Friend, over a decade ago. I've always admired your honesty, starting way back in your VideoSongs. Yeah, your intentions in this case backfired, but over time I think your character speaks for itself. So glad you're still creating.
What a great video - inspirational person 10yrs ago and still are today.
WOW! I came here to praise & thank you but a whole buncha people had already said exactly what I was thinking. So here's my new comment: Your fan base is AWESOME -- loyal, passionate, intelligent, & informed. And they have great taste in music!
Hi Jack, Investing your whole self into something you care about is exceedingly vulnerable! It's the fear that keeps me from creating. But watching you is inspiring me to take those first daunting steps! Thank you!
Thank you Jack. I follow Pomplamoose since 2008, I saw the whole process, I can't imagine what you could have felt. I never thought I could relate to you and to this story, but in my last year, I really felt something really similar to whatever happened to you. The only difference is, the energy you put into stuff you love. That's something I could never reach.
Cheers and love from Italy
The way I see it, you are a tremendous human being. I've been watching Scarey Pockets with total delight for the last year or so... Your enthusiasm makes me love and laugh out loud!
Jack you are such an inspiration to me on so many levels! And you are spot on: we need criticism in our lives to help guide us! But also we need the understanding that a lot of it is just word vomit from people who are subconciosly frustrated with their own lives and just taking it out on anything or anyone they can.
this is one of my favorite channels on youtube and it's because Jack always shares his failures and it just makes ME feel better about my journey into entrepreneurship as a musician and creator. I also remember this blogpost and it blew my mind, I cannot believe there was backlash.
Honestly I was surprised to find out you're a CEO. Not mad, just stunned you can juggle all that. Pomplamoose videos have helped me massively through pandemic isolation, watched them every day. Started making beats aber levels, so it's literally playing my favorite songs for hours on end on a loop, and no matter how rough the day, these videos always brought a smile to my face. The passion shows and is somehow preserved in these videos. Thank you for making them.
Sometimes the negative comments can be instructive but mostly they are just envious reactions to someone living life to the fullest. You guys rock!
You've got courage for putting this out there, Jack. Thank you. I'm learning from you.
I watched this video from beginning to end. That is the sign that this was a great video Jack.
Okay I’m playing catch-up here/ I just learned about your band Scary Pockets just within the last few weeks. While there are two clips here it’’s the second clip that stopped me in my tracks. I recognize that red Strat and that shaved head! That’s NYC Strat Master Oz Noy! Dude! You got Oz Noy to be part of what you do! Anyone who’s followed Oz knows the calibre of musicians he can draw. By being able to get someone like him involved, you are, in my mind, pretty much on the same level as Oz: being able to attract the attention of amazing, creative people into what you do. That ranks as being pretty darn successful in my book!
I totally get the “epic fail” point you are trying to make is exactly what creative people need to hear. Doing this is hard. Sometime it ain’t fun. But, as Jimi Hendrix said about playing the guitar: “Sometimes you want to give up the guitar, you'll hate the guitar. But if you stick with it, you're gonna be rewarded.” Same it true with anyone who wants t to do this . You just have to stick with it.
I’m glad you and Nataly have stuck with it!
Thank you for sharing this. I've followed Pomplamoose since before Patreon and Subbable and when this all went down I felt so sad for you since you were just being transparent about indie band operations. Keep on creating and keep on being amazing.
Bro! I love your openness and authenticity! Thanks for all that you do! I've been able to pursue my dreams full time and support my family because of my art through Patreon!
I have been dipping in and out of Pomplamoose for a few years and did not pick up on the Patron thing, my first reaction was how cool is that, I work in tech and from my experience a healthy number of musicians, artists and engineers. making the tech space such a creative environment, also that you are not simply valued or limited to just one thing.
I vividly remember you and Natalie releasing a video about the financials of your tour and thinking it was really cool. I didn't feel the least-bit mislead when I found out you were CEO of Patreon. I wasn't even surprised. In fact, I had heard about Patreon through Pomplamoose having one back in college (like 2010), so when it blew up later on it made sense that such "early adopters" of the platform were actually the creators.
I think it's important to define what exactly it is you and other creators owe your audience and, beyond basic human decency, I believe it's nothing. The transparency and connection you fostered with your fans was already an above and beyond offering, and one that myself and so many others love and appreciate y'all for. For some to claim that you weren't transparent ENOUGH just proves that people are always after a scandal, so ready for a mistake to jump on that they'll manifest one.
As someone who balances lucid dreaming with being a funk king with running a successful company with being married to one of the most badass women out there, I'm skeptical that you get time to read comments, but I'd just like to say thanks for your all your effort to create great art and great platforms for all of us, and all your effort to remain a good and grounded person when you're successful. You and Natalie were big influences on my creativity in pivotal years for me, and if this is your "cringiest fail" then you've done an outstanding job navigating the world. Much love
So I only discovered pomp la moose about 4 months ago and this just popped up today.
Not a clue you were a Patreon CEO. Congrats for the success, in both.
Not a clue why there's negative comments. It's none of their business unless you're breaking the law. Which you're obviously not.
Keep up the awesome work. I've purchased both French Pomp la Moose EPs and look forward to more.
Jack, you have poured yourself into cultivating your music and art and shared the fruits of that with the world, along with the journey of the harvest. You have created a platform and a means through which other artists and creators can earn a living from their art. You have opened yourself up to the multi-faceted and multi-fanged community that is the internet and shared the breadth of your experiences. I hope that when you look in the mirror you like what you see - because the respect and admiration you've earned from so many came from one single place. You. Thanks for doing and being you. You're a very bright spark in an often festering darkness - Keep On Keepin' On sir. :)
I always love seeing the transparency you guys strive for. I felt a little bad a few months back when I called out Nat for posting a ‘free album’ post to Pomplamoose that failed to disclose it required a paid Patreon contribution, and didn’t disclose the connections to Patreon either. It has to be tough to have the two so entwined, when you want both to succeed on their own footing. In Nat’s credit, the post was quickly updated to address these concerns. Personally, I’ve never been much of a fan of music but Pomplamoose honestly changed that. The video story format and having only two people produce made it easy to follow along, understand, and feel empowered by the quirky and fun tunes that anyone could honestly make. It represented a huge amount of transparency, that fundamentally helped me appreciate the art being created. It’s been a bit sad to see a transition away from this, yet I’m glad to see through videos like this that there is still a value from you two for transparency and listening to your audiences.
I follow your work since around 2013 and remember all of this. I recall reading that article when you published it and as an aspiring musician at the time I found it very enlightening! Every time you put out content talking about life as an artist it was really helpful to me in many occasions. It’s insane to me that you went through all this nonsense BS, you were always so honest and transparent on everything you did not to mention how amazing you are as a musician/artist. I can only say thank you for everything you do for us creators around the world.
Jack, I am sorry you had such a rough patch and I am really glad you stuck it out and pressed forward. Pomplamoose and Patreon bring a lot of good into the world. BTW no one who has seen you perform could ever claim you are not a musician. Your energy and talent is amazing.
I went and re-read the tour budget breakdown and it makes total sense. I'm a sound engineer who toured in canada. The only details i found odd was the 20$ per diem, in 2014 the caliber of artist i was working with paid 50$ (cad) BUT I have no idea what your crew's day rates were or if some meal were always suplied each day, so a 20$ per diem probably made sense.
Thank you for sharing this! Such an inspiring video.
That's crazy u had to learn that like this, I care about what people I don't know think too, anyways glad I found the channel and can't wait to catch up on some more stuff
I’ve been watching you and Natalie from the get go. I’ve been through all y’all’s changes. I love everything pomplamoose! Patreon is just an extension of the pomlamoose love in my opinion. Keep on keeping on.
I just love you so much; your pure goodness comes through in every single minute of every single video. The world needs more people like you. Ignore the ignorant haters.
Patreon is in the right hands! Your passion and enthusiasm are contagious and I always love seeing you rocking out TO YOUR OWN BAND while making music with your band. You're like simultaneously your biggest fan and we then live vicariously through you. Keep up the great work!
as a member of duo, i'm super grateful for this post. considering and embracing the negativity and quickly moving on from it. that's the only way to let your mind rest when you finally get hard earned time off.
Thanks so much for putting this together. Loved the insight into your and Nataly's experiences and decision-making processes, and of course a "breakdown of an internet rage-fest" tends to offer a lot of lessons about pile-ons, leaping to conclusions, etc etc. BTW regardless of any other income source you have, detailing the finances of a band tour is still handy for other musos considering doing that.
Watching you grow from the solo musician that I watched as a university freshman in 2008-2009 to the CEO of Patreon has been pretty wacky to say the least. Knowing your creative background and humble beginnings has made your explosive success such an interesting contrast to compare. I never really doubted your good intent, even when you'd blunder. You're an artist at heart who helped solve a problem that was affecting not only other artists, but the very things you were struggling with. Obviously my opinion is just a whisper in the wind and I don't know you personally, but I am proud of you (and proud of any artist really who finds their way in this crazy world).
Hey Jack! Thanks for this! Touched me...Is there an Article somewhere discussing the new Workflow that you used to for Scary Pockets and Pomplamoose, cause I‘m relly trying to figure out how to use my time best, thanks in advance, cheers Casey
Jack - Great video! Here's two more I'd love to watch, plucked straight out of the middle of this story. 1. What's the creative process you unlocked in Scary Pockets that seemingly allows you to "scale" creativity? 2. You mention that you 'get excited, and go all in... and yes, that can lead to flops. But sometimes it works'... I'd love to know, how do you keep the negative thoughts at bay around 'what if this doesn't work' while you just create on your current piece? Or, are you somehow immune from those thoughts?
Anyway, keep these vids coming. They are great.
I love what you and how you do it. You have the imagination to try untested things. Jack, this exactly what the world needs bro. Keep going.
Jack! So much respect for you and your atitude my man!
I always admired you for your keys playing and now for your CEO skills.
The first thing I was told at a business course was to plan your exit strategy from a start up business. This struck me as very counter intuitive, but the reality is that whether or not a business is a success, sooner or later it will carry on without you. No one is indispensable! However, you can carry on making music until they put you in a box. You just have to realise where your priorities lie.
Hi Jack,
I "met you" through the Jamiroquai Beegees video , and thought "Woaw what ?! .... how is this guy so in the real love of the present moment damn ... " investigated a bit a found this video.
Thanks for the love you share.
We might not meet in real life , but the virtual insanity made it.
Take care of yourself and your surroundings.
Alexis
I remember when that went down. Thank you for revisiting that experience and how it made you feel. That's motivating, Jack.
I just love this channel and I am wondering why is it not that popular, cause, Jack, not only you made through all this shit fest, you created so beautiful story out of this, living-breathing and teaching one. You are a creator with a capital C, thank you so much for all inspiration you share not only as a musician, but also as a CEO of Patreon.
P.S.: Funny thing, I am a fan of the Pomplamoose for 11 years, but I accidentally found out that you are the CEO of Patreon just a year ago or so (and this fact made a huge explosion of WOW in my head).
Great video Jack! So glad you didn’t give up sharing your creativity. We benefit from it every day!
"The only person who never makes a mistake is the person who never does anything"
kudos to your journey and thanks for sharing !
cheers.
Great share ...great points...when haters get steam they create more steam....just remember steam eventually evaporates. Your passion to build a model to allow creators to be economically viable will always be known as one of the most brilliant solutions ever. Keep up the great work
Jack, I am a big fan of Pomplamoose. Plus i am a Patreon supporter for an aviation youtuber. never knew the connection.
Keep doing what you are doing.
Patreon is a great platform that helps so many creators.
Scary pockets and Pomplamoose are a couple of my fav youtube channels for music. keep creating and helping others create.
I like you Jack. Thanks for continuing to make content. I think it's valuable. And thanks for making Patreon because it gives me the opportunity to support my favorite creators.
Scary pockets, scary goldings, pomplamoose, patreon, jack conte channel, and life. I think you could do more. Lol. I don't know why there is so much hate and anger in this world. Know this though, you have accomplished more and put out more positive vibes than most people could in ten lifetimes. Stay happy jack.
Dude, you shouldn't lister for the crowd. Your are the most exciting musician i've ever seen. So creative from your 1st youtube video. And patreon is only adds on to your talent. Just ignore those losers. They are just regular dushbag haters.
Patreon is a great idea and I support several artists who I think deserve support. People can be so negative and jealous- ignore the negativity!
I remember that. I was a longtime fan of yours (still am). Saw you on the first proper tour (2011). Met you guys in Philly at World Cafe Live. Gave you Raising Arizona-inspired Pomplamoose buttons that I custom-made. You raved about my Calvin and Hobbes arm tattoo and we bro-bonded over Bill Watterson. Fucking made my night! :) I remember that surge of negative feedback and that truthfully did turn me off from you guys' music for a couple years (I kind of bailed on Pomplamoose when Pomplamoose went on hiatus, as you said). I was like "yeah. Maybe he IS phony." Since Pomplamoose was pretty quiet, I figured you guys might have been done. But, I came back around as I always felt you guys are/were the real deal.
But those articles definitely fucked with my head a bit. I like a lot of Bob Lefsetz' mailings/newsletters but oftentimes he's an annoying blowhard know-it-all (who often doesn't know it all). So yeah, this video was great to see and hear about.
I've been on Patreon since the early days. I had no patrons until a couple years ago... and currently make $22 a month from my 6 awesome patrons. I hope to get a lot more, but I'm really happy that I make a couple hundred bucks a year from these amazing people. It helps me keep doing what I love to do. I'd love about 594 more monthly patrons, thought. Just as I'd love about 8,000 more RUclips subscribers. Hopefully in the future I can reach a milestone or two.
Jack, I so enjoy when you do things like this! You are one of the most relatable CEO's I've ever come across.
Hi Jack, Andrew here in Ottawa Canada. I have followed you and the band for sometime and I always remember your pitch to Casey😀
I have struggled with my perfectionism and passion but I have always stayed true to myself and being honest with myself and those around me.
I heard a quote last year _ Do the right thing, not the easy thing -
You are doing it and your passion, creativity shows.
You learn by making mistakes and as I was advised at the weekend you care. Imagine a world if no one cared
Cheers
Andrew
Thanks for sharing. Your "all in" commitment is inspiring, even after the flak you take and the long time you have been pursuing your creative vision.
Dude, I cried tears of joy watching this video. You rock.
I love this channel, it makes me feel so good, so bad, and so aware all at the same time.
As someone struggling to push forward with my own projects, to put myself out there, to think my work will have any worth (my work, not me... this channel has helped me separate the two), to publish, not finish. This channel helps so much more than so many others that I follow...
It helps to understand the struggles of creativity, as both a creative outlet and as something we hope will support us, in a way very few other channels can. While I follow many channels, few of them really give advice that feels as genuine or insightful as a lot of these videos do.
So thank you for this, for all of these...
And so you know, the only other person I really put alongside your channel for advice on creativity, as both a personal and business pursuit, is Struthless... The guys channel is amazing (no I don't know him and this is not sponsored :D). I really recommend a look.
Anyway, thanks again...
I love your ability to take in a scope of opinions. And honestly, you're really one of the few creators who - when you say being ethical means a lot to you - I believe it. Also envy the workflow success a ton
Thank you for sharing your passion - an impressive range of passion. Congratulations with all of your success. You rock!
I can't believe how 7 years later this story is still super interesting. Crazy stuff.
This is great Jack! I was listening to my folder of Jack Conte songs the other day (which I heard before any Pomplamoose songs) and was just thinking I love your unique style back then. Of course Gulf was the first I heard, but then I bought your album, not sure which one it was at the time. It's awesome that you have Scary Pockets and Pomplamoose as some creative outlets. I'm into almost everything that you are a part of. I do wonder why you haven't done any solo stuff, or much singing on anything since way back when though. I know it takes a ton of time to do things the way you did pouring your heart into them, but the reason most of us like listening to artist's voices is because they have a uniqueness to them. So sing some more brother! Or at least know that some people would be happy to hear it. Also, throw in some 7/8 - 8/8 or 5/4 songs in there for fun.
We love you and Nataly, Pomplamoose and Scary Pockets for the joy your music brings the world. Your sum up at the end of this is very well put.
Watching this video has yielded a smattering of brain bubbles I think of when I have the pleasure of interfacing with Jack Conte:
True North - I admire how you've walked a mind numbing path of zeniths and nadirs, celebrations and tragedies, profits and losses, et al. Yet through it all you've not waivered from your internal True North of never giving up, and always following your passions. That is inspiringly admirable!
Gyroscopic resilience - There's a specific reason any rocket that has ever been launched has a gyroscope to guide its trajectory. Once you light those engines, there are about eleventy-million forces and variables working against the end goal of getting into orbit. Once you get that gizmo spinning, the gyroscope provides a directional stability that is unmatched in its ability to keep things on track. You, Sir, have been blessed with that quality and I would posit is one of your greatest strengths.
Humilis Poster Child - Humilis is Latin for "low or close to the ground." Whether you choose the adjective derived from the Latin root, Humble, or the noun, Humility, you are the embodiment of that trait.
Eternal Thirst - Your unquenchable thirst for growth and pursuit of your passions is awe inspiring!
Full Disclosure - You have embraced the power of transparency and shared the full spectrum of the good, the bad and the ugly in spite of the inevitable critique and criticism that will occur. That takes an incredible amount of bravery and confidence to broadcast that honesty and vulnerability.
As the founding member of the JackConteExtras/Pomplamoose/Scary Pockets Eternal Fan Club, I would like to say thank you and please don't EVER stop doing what you do best...Being Jack Conte.
I'm simping a bit on Japanese Vtubers, and they get the same internet hatewaves with doxxing IRL and losing their jobs just because of the fact they are dating someone. After this, your story isn't that cringy, you at least did something that led to misunderstanding.
But enough my "must say about" moments, you, Jack, are a really incredible person with all your transparency and energy, and Pomplamoose is a band which is my window to the Western music (because of your covers and mashups) and also your clips are quite fancy! Thank you for this.
You be you, because only you can be the best you. 👍🏻
Jack, keep believing! You and Nat are Lovable, believable, and talented....not to mention COMMITTED. Love you both!
Great video. Honestly I didn't pay attention to the Patreon thing and actually thought it was kind of an inside joke I didn't get because maybe you looked like the CEO of Patreon. I took the video about the tour at face value and maybe that's just me being naive. Either way, I appreciate the sharing of the lesson here. It's a reminder to be thoughtful about who you put out there when you talk about yourself and your work.
Jack,
Thanks for your bravery. Always an inspiration.
PS - I’ll proudly write “CEO of Patreon” under your signature on my t-shirt from the First Ever Tour (though it’s a bit faded now).
Great take on self reflection and the resulting growth as a person. Thanks for sharing this story with us Jack, cheers!
You are doing a really good job of motivating me to get over myself and get creating.
