Above the entrance to the Greek temple of Apollo at Delphi was written the words Γνῶθι σαυτόν - Know Thyself. Funny that the height of religious experience, to the Greeks at least, was self reflection. After all how can I know others or in a greater since the world around me, if I don't know myself? So, I agree in that it brings a better understanding of myself, I should be critical of myself. Also, when I know myself the insults of others become pointless and ineffective: If their insults are false all the easier to reject that input. It true, so what? I already know this of myself lol all the more reason to work on myself lol. As the old Jewish saying goes, "If I am not for myself, who will be for me?" In anycase. I Love your content. Was waiting all morning for you to post. You are a Quality person, Wynn. A very rare thing to find in today's world! Look forward to your next post!
@@Wynn_yt Thank You! Learning is Growing :). You really are Gold, Wynn! Not a lot of people in your generation seem to want to learn more. Most seem stuck on materialism and perception of others lol. If you are interested I'd like to recommend a good book to start with, "Hero with a thousand faces" by Joseph Campbell. It's a great read, I was about your age when I first read it. But yeah, I really Love your content and Topics. You really are a Quality person, Wynn. Don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise! :)
We must be careful, though, with self-criticism because we can be too hard on ourselves if we have low self-esteem. Then we become our own worst enemy. Likewise, we might think too highly of ourselves and not see our own flaws, so we automatically reject other's opinions. I think there is great value in listening to the opinions of others while discerning if their criticism was constructive or destructive. Also, we must take into consideration if the criticism came from a person whom we respect or from a jerk who has nothing good to say about anything.
@@Billythedude2 again, Know Thyself. There is indeed a difference between criticism, In it's pure meaning (the analysis and judgement of merits and faults) and self destruction or sabotage. One should have an even view of one self that is truthful. Bruce Lee talks about truly looking at oneself. I should like the think that I know my own struggles, my failures, as well as my achievements and goals, (Revealed through introspection and outward influences). This wouldn't require me to be too hard on myself, but it does require me being honest with myself, which is no small feat. And you are right, we can look to those we trust, and sometimes even our enemies to further teach us and show us our own blind spots and help us on the path. But as Wynn notes, it shouldn't be the foundation of the change I seek to implement, or the foundation of my own self reflection, that must come from within. If my foundation of self reflection isn't set, then we are already limited in what we can learn from others anyway. We simply won't listen. As even Jesus says, "The Kingdom of Gd is within you". Meaning all the tools that are necessary to complete this marathon we call life is already within us (self reflection, conscious and subconscious review, and the enigmatic Collective Unconscious), accompanied by that old Delphic oracle (books, teachers, experience, and the occasional enemy). The Aristotelian principal of the middle path becomes important in this regard.
It is true that we often have difficulty accepting criticism from others. However, if we try to do an introspection, we can see that some critics from others can be fair and ultimately beneficial for ourselves because they allow us to correct our mistakes and our attitudes, do you agree with that?
Yes 100% its true that being critiqued in a community where they would want you to succeed is ultimately beneficial for the person so that they can know whats working and whats not working for them, whilst being criticized by others that would want to look down on that person is overall not healthy for that person. great comment ❤
