A short free mini-documentary on SpaceX ahead of their planned Demo 2 astronaut launch.
You are Elon Musk, the 2001 Elon Musk. You hit it big with PayPal during the Dot Com Boom in Silicon Valley and now are left with all this money lying around. Most people in this situation would probably sit back and enjoy the fruits of their labor. But you’re different, you view money as not the endgame, but a tool.
You decided to move to LA. When you visited NASA’s website, there was literally nothing! But you are a smart guy, you come to the conclusion that everything comes down to public support. You gather up a bunch of experts and task them with coming up with some kind of grand spectacle that would reinvigorate people’s spirit to get to Mars again.
Even though all your friends and family tried to talk you out of your space ambitions so you wouldn’t waste all your money, you and a few friends hop on a flight to Moscow. The Russians were the only ones that could possibly fit your budget.
You turn around and say “hey guys, I think we can build this rocket ourselves.” But not everyone can afford these expensive launches. If the Russians won’t do it, if the US won’t do it, then it’s up to you to turn interplanetary travel into a reality - and SpaceX was born. After studying rocket science and the space industry for months, Space Exploration Technologies was formed in an old warehouse in LA
You bring your startup know-how of being lean, moving fast, pivoting fast with limited funds, and apply it to the space industry that’s full of these slow-moving bureaucratic behemoths like Lockheed and Boeing.
SpaceX got its first customer, the Department of Defense for a satellite launch. It took an entire year before SpaceX would launch. Employees were trying not to throw up, the fate of your dream of interplanetary travel was on the line.
You finally proved yourself to the world. Both Tesla and SpaceX were so out of money that you had to borrow from friends to make payroll.
Today, things have gone as great. You’ve single-handedly inspired a new generation of people excited to explore the final frontier. You’ve come full circle back to your childhood days of fantasizing about space travel, except now, it’s a one step closer to becoming a reality. Keep an open mind to what’s possible

With money like Elon has, there's no reason to make safe investments like that. He's so rich that even if Space X failed, he'd be perfectly fine.
ThePsychoRenegade Well he’s probably have been fine but not because he had enough money, just because he’s smart and a hard worker and had enough connections at that point to put something together but Spacex almost did fail and he only planned on putting half of his money into it which would have been fine but that’s not what happened. There was a point after where he had to borrow money to pay his rent. Most people would have stopped long before and cut their losses before risking what they couldn’t afford to risk. He just begs the farm basically, it’s pretty impressive now that it’s successful, that’s really believing in yourself.

Oh, stop glorifying elon musk. He's not some self made man or real life Tony Stark. His family were already millionaires from emerald mines in apartheid South Africa (which basically means slavery) and he just made some smart investments. He didn't even start fucking tesla, he just bought it up early on. Most former Tesla and SpaceX employees say he is a terrible boss and is impossible to deal with. He also fires workers for mentioning unionizing, even when they are off the clock. He is not some super genius, like y'all want people to think. He hasn't done any actual engineering in years, and the only part of anything he has designed was the charging port for the tesla, which is a rather simple design and doesn't require a genius. People like elon musk and jeff bezos watch star trek and think "that looks cool" but they don't want to go through any of the social changes or wealth redistribution that make star trek a good place. They want the star trek aesthetic but they are making cyberpunk.

I got to see the first steps on the moon, and was inspired to learn math and science. My father instructed me in learning electronics, and I joined the U.S.A.F.. Things then went sideways from there. I have been following the progress of Space X for some time now. I found your video to be fresh in informative. Keep up the good work.

If you think about it, colonizing Mars is the dumbest idea ever. First off, it's completely inhabitable. Secondly, vegetation and alternative life (food) is nonexistent. Even if you can get passed all these hurdles which is impossible at this point, it would be a dystopian hellhole. I'll never understand how he pitched this idea, and people said, "you know what, that's a great idea." Elon probably surrounds himself with yes men and sychophants who go along with his stupid ideas. Spacex wouldn't be possible without government subsidies. Neither would Tesla for that matter. At least, you got the "pretty smart" part right. He's no genius. In fact, he has no degree in engineering period. He basically steals idea and hocks them off as his own. He has a total of three patents: a door, a fender, and a plug, but please go on about how he's an innovator.

That 60 minutes interview is fucking hard to watch when he’s asked how he felt to see his heroes basically saying he was stupid to even try to rekindle humanity’s thirst for space exploration. You can see him start to break down in tears as he tries to keep it together and be professional. It’s painful.

It's more Russians being dormant, like NASA was, rather than SpaceX out-engineering them. They could've made their vtvl booster in the 90s, much like NASA, but good luck pushing such projects in a stale government run agency riddled by bureaucracy and plagued by a lack of funds. The same goes for SpaceX too, they benefited greatly from NASAs DC-X who then chose to outsource projects to the private sector.
The whole story about greedy russians arrogantly refusing to bargain for refitted ICBMs like you do on asian grocery bazaars is just a plain bullshit. Muck travelled to RF for purchasing technological cards concerning rocketry etc. And, the short story: he successfully did.

Haters? I firmly believe criticism is needed where its due. Just to remind people of all the things they failed to consider. As the poor choices of the many, can negatively affect the lives of others who did not deserve such pressures. And to remind people like Musk, that he is being watched closely. One also needs to consider priorities, itll probably cost far more to do anything on Mars, than it is fixing the problems on Earth.

Their budget are taxes so we don't need them anymore.

This is a dumb video, SpaceX would have got nowhere without huge NASA help with technical abilities and infrastructure. The american taxpayers have subsidised a private company and got no gain from it.

Excellent work Jake! Please keep it up! Remember that whole work-life balance thing though. Or you'll end up like me, a burnout. With 30 years in engineering, burning the candle at both ends, now I'm in my mid 60's wondering wtf the time went. Working for NASA, General Dynamics, Allied Signal, Intel, HP and a few others, all sucked the dreams right out of my Soul. Life is short.
