      Canadian visiting South Africa for a while, I went to the iStore and saw the 17 pro Max 512 for 35k ZAR. That is 3k Canadian. You can cop the same phone for 2 grand. A thousand dollars more expensive. Same goes for Samsung. The fact it is so inflated surprises me but then again. Third world country plus tarrifs. And the worst part? Y'all don't do trade ins and y'all don't have contracted plans when buying from Samsung.

    I'm from 2nd world country (Poland). And even though I work in IT (kinda senior role) I bought one iPhone in my life. It was 13 mini at the time when version 15 was on the market. I was considering it for like 6 months. I'm still using it but battery is getting crappier and crappier. At least we are in EU so I can get cheaper iPhones from amazon or normally prices ones from original apple store, but here only newest models which are too expensive.
    I totally feel you.
    But iPhone or flagship Samsung models are also expensive for ordinary US folks. Some people make there $2k/month while the rent and utilities eats most of it. At least they have cheap fuel in US (you have it cheap in Kazakhstan too). Food is also quite cheap in US (been there lately and it was cheaper than here in Poland in most cases).
    World isn't fair, but when we make it in the 2nd or 3rd world countries we should be proud! :D

    I'm from Sweden which is a first world country, but I relate to some things mentioned in the video. We have like 3 Apple Stores total in the entire country (which I think must be quite new because I don't remember there being Apple Stores say 10 years ago), so majority of people buy from third-party retailers. We also get scammed with the prices, where a new iPhone costs 1000-1200$ minimum nowadays. I haven't bought an iPhone new in well over 10 years, one because I switched to Android and two if I ever need a newer iPhone I'll just buy it from the secondhand market. Buying Apple products new is never worth it.

    I’m from the Philippines, and I gotta tell you: there’s a LOT of Android alternatives for iPhone. Many of these brands are from China (i.e. Poco, infinix, Tecno, Realme, Xiaomi, Oppo, Huawei, etc.), and they’re WAY cheaper than iPhones or Samsung phones, even their flagship models. As far as I remember, these brands are selling their products at prices mostly based on their manufacturing cost.

    • @lalunafelis
      @lalunafelis Month ago

      Nah, I don't trust China brands, and the Android ban and subsequent Android OS ripoffs they made for the ban makes me stay away from them even more. Samsung midrangers do the job of being a daily driver, and the only reason I can see for getting flagships is for those with particular needs(which I'm sure they have the money for)

    Nice Vid Bro👍. One thing I wanted to say is that although Poland is luckily not a third world country and located in Europe, the prices of products (apple for example) are similar to those in your country (but still lower) due to all the taxes and expenses. The only big difference is salary which is a lot higher here (again, very lucky to be in Poland). So basically, if retailers in your country wanted to buy from Poland they would still spend a lot.

    • @jakubk.7990
      @jakubk.7990 Month ago +3

      The Polish iPhone prices are actually very similar to ones in Western Europe - iPhones in general are sold for more in the EU simply because in Europe, VAT has to be included in the final price - in the US, sales tax is only added when you do the purchase as it depends on your state.

    You are absolutely correct. I had a similar issue with a MacBook air and I had to do the repairs and replacement myself even though it was brand new and it was a factory defect. there are simply no repair stores to process the warranty in third world countries like Nigeria. Many them have to process the warranty in the country of manufacturing. sometimes they have to reach out to Apple to send the parts to the shop or sometimes they may even advise that you ship the device down there for Apple to do the repair themselves so it's not easy at all.

  • @OshaneC92

    Where I live $1 USD is equivalent to $2.70. The average Flagship smartphone cost around $1099 USD plus taxes. So if I wanted to buy the latest model it would cost me around $4500 because they add around 38%-50% tax on it plus a sellers mark up.
    Mind you the average salary is around $2000 of my money. Luckily I’m in a higher paying job than most so I can afford to buy an iPhone and it doesn’t bother me.
    I change my phone every couple years though. This year I upgraded from the 13 Pro to the 17 Pro. To make it cheaper for me I made my friend that lives in the USA pick it up for me and when he was coming to visit he brought it and that eliminated the taxes.

  • @SXZ-dev
    @SXZ-dev Month ago +1

    An iPhone 17 costs 1200 euros in Portugal also, the MSRP is rarely ever really applied, and US pricing doesn't include taxes because they're state-specific over there and depend on WHERE you buy it so the generic prices Apple puts on their US website are misleading and not what even most US consumers are paying in reality. In Europe we got additional import stuff and VAT and stuff like that which brings it up to around 1239 euros as of this writing which is 1470 US dollars. WAY more than what the Apple USA website would lead you to believe.
    Now, the thing is that here it's maybe 2 months wages and you can buy it on credit and pay it off monthly but yeah just wanted to point out the price isn't that ridiculous in your country, it's not adjusted to local wages but it's more or less what we're paying for it in Europe also.
    In either case tax-wise the Americans are very different and very uniquely privileged with sales taxes ranging from 0% to 10% (VAT here is 23% for comparison) and we can't really compare our purchasing power to theirs even first-world Europeans can't realistically, American purchasing power is just on another level because they don't have VAT tax

  • @LiorGoland
    @LiorGoland Month ago +3

    Nice video bro! You seem to know a lot about mobile phones and digital products and how pricing works. But when it comes to political terms like “the three worlds,” the concept isn’t really standard today and is rarely used internationally anymore.
    In fact, the term “Three Worlds” was proposed in 1952 by the French scholar Alfred Sauvy. At that time, it was used to describe political camps during the Cold War, not levels of economic development. It was about political alignment, not wealth.
    After the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, that classification largely lost its original meaning. Nowadays, when people say “first world country,” they usually mean “developed country,” but that’s not what the term originally meant.
    Also, I found the phrase “send you to Dagestan” really interesting, so I looked it up. Is that a common joke or cultural reference in the former Soviet region?

    German here. You can always get discounts on phones. We even have physical Apple stores. Been there, shit as expected. But with android phones you can get great discounts sometimes. For example: a tech retailer here had the Pixel 9 256GB was on sale for 699€, and 200€ cashback for trading in your phone. I was too hesitant but I'm gonna do it if they do the same deal on the Pixel 10 in Summer. Because after trading in my Galaxy S23 Plus, I'd pay 225€ for a flagship Pixel phone. Here, buying from Apple directly is a scam because you can find it cheaper elsewhere, except if you want AppleCare.

I'm currently using an iphone 11 i've been lucky enough to be able to afford some nice things but spending 3k on a phone is not something i see myself ever doing with that money you can buy new motorcycle or buy a used car. If you can afford it fine but a regualr citizen doing this makes no sense other than following others. Also the repairs are through the roof i repair my own stuff it's cheaper to buy the stuff and do it yourself most of the parts are cheap but get marked up to high hell. I don't knock people for getting it but the prices on these phones make no sense.

    Coming from a developing country in the Caribbean to the US, its night and day the power of the US dollar. I could easily by an iPhone 17 Pro Max with 2 weeks salary, but I buy it installments, zero interest while keeping cash flow free paying it off over time.

    talk about iphones prices? say brazil
    a base iphone 17 model costs 7.100 Reais or 1.360 USDollar
    The minimum Wage here is 1.600 Reais per month, so the average brazilian who wants a base model of the year has to work 4,5 months without spending a single buck to pay for an iphone, that is insane, and actually there is a lot of people who get the brand new iphone pro model of the year and split its value in 21 installments and THAT is insane

    As an Iranian, I find this very relatable. Flack ship phones literally cost about 100 Million Toman and Toman has one less zero compared to the actual official currency which is Rial.
    A base iPhone 17Pro will cost you around 190 Million Toman. That is without registry. Which is something the Islamic regime did a few years ago, so that in order to use your a sim card for more than a month in Iran, you have to pay. And now, for the 17Pro that I mentioned, it’s about 50 Million Toman.

    Just buy a cheap low-mid android phone that can easily last 5 years. Except for some professionals, no one needs an iPhone. My 300$ Realme P3 Ultra is more than enough for my usage.
    In my country India, we have wide variety of brands to choose from like Samsung, Moto, Xiaomi, Redmi, Realme, iQOO, OPPO, Vivo, OnePlus, Infinix, etc. It's weird to see countries like USA have just 2 or 3 brands as choice like Apple & Samsung only(as their ISP carrier is tied to these brands)

    • @eyadcomputer8165
      @eyadcomputer8165 Month ago +16

      300$ Isn't easy to get as someone Live in low income country, if someone get 200$ a month does it make sense he will buy even 100$ phone?
      I hope you get it

    • @gokultn72
      @gokultn72 Month ago +1

      @eyadcomputer8165 Yes. But I'm not that broke & can afford $300 mid range phone (it's actually 331$ or 30K INR). Comparing to 1000$ iPhone, my phone's still cheap & better in 'some' aspects.
      That doesn't mean I insist everyone to buy 300$ phone, just plan it according to your budget & use case.

      @eyadcomputer8165who said that you can easily get those on no cost emi 😂😂 People have really forgot the concept of saving money. A phone is something you buy once in 3-4 years not monthly or annually.
      I both mine redmi 3 years ago for 300 usd and it's working up . Ig 3 years is a lot of time to save money.
      Also the cost of living is a lot less compared to other developed countries so. Don't forget that most of the families don't even have 1k saved in their bank and are just using afterpay and credit card to buy groceries

      @koharaisevo3666 no he earns $140 a month but there is no apple store in Egypt so it comes costing around $3000 which is more than 20 times, but that's also very bad like a "budget PC" that costs around $560 is 4 times a doctor salary and that's not including a living cost which is like $200 based on what google says and it's true so most people live under average

    In Brazil a Samsung S25 Ultra is 35% (just checked) cheaper than an iPhone 17 Pro Max... And I support this because, well, Samsung are cheaper because they are made in Brazil products. As a result of a company investing in Brazil, opening a factory here (and generating local jobs), they get to sell their products cheaper and, as expected, they get more sales here. Samsung phones are more popular than iPhones here. That's the good kind of protectionism.
    Apple also makes iPhone in Brazil, but only some lower end models. And those are quite popular here because they have decent prices. If Apple wants a piece of the high end phone market in Brazil, all they have to do is to open a factory here and started selling made in Brazil high end iPhones. /
    And hell, Americans might have cheap iPhones, but they don't have free healthcare, free medications, free college, free buses, 30 day vacation... But I have. I got 3 degrees and a masters for free. I say it's a good trade.
