    Here’s an idea I came up with for making an annex room for my side awning. All these types of side awnings are similar (probably made from the same parts in the same warehouse in China). They all have a "channel" on the flat-bar side. The only difference will be the size. I personally have the Yakima slim shady that's 6.5 x 6.5 feet. Arb makes 3 sizes ranging from 8 x 8 feet to 4 x 6.8 feet but even the cheapo ones have side channels. DID YOU KNOW: annex rooms go from $200 to $300? Here's how you can give yourself some extra weather protection and privacy for $20.
    Here's the link to the tarps:
    ABCCANOPY Instant Canopy SunWall
    amzn.to/3bp2W2w
    Don't forget to buy some 3/8" rope, and as suggested in the comments below, buy some magnets too!
    I hope you find this useful.

    **Thank you to Michael for letting us know that the price has gone up for these "sun walls". As of right now, depending on color, the price is $18 to $25.**
    One thing I didn’t mention is that you should stake down your side awning during high winds. The two ropes dangling inside this annex room should be on the outside and anchored down to the earth. Sorry I wasn’t able to show you how that’s done. This video was shot during the Covid-19 pandemic and it’s recommended that we self isolate at home.

    Genius. I will be doing this and using some tarp clips on the bottom to pull it out and peg it down! Just saved me so much money 😃

    Clever solution Jon! That was a great find and makes far more sense than the (completely) DIY approach to this I was kicking around.

      softroadingthewest I wasn’t so crazy about this side awning, but with the addition of these side walls, I’m loving it! They connect so quickly and the whole setup doesn’t take up any extra storage space besides a little grocery bag I’d carry the tarp walls in.

    hi Jon My name is Will and I have been watching your channel from the very start and I wanted to share some info with you i am driving a 2017 Ridgeline with 85000 miles on the clock and I just remembered why I got the Ridgeline and not the Pilot when Honda designed the Ridgeline they customized about 50% of the original Pilot design to make it stronger for the new truck build that means the wheel bearings the whole suspension is much more solid in the truck then in all other honda suvs it makes the truck better suited for off roading you can view a comparison with the Pilot on the jason honda pro website thought you might find this interesting keep op the good work and stay safe Will

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  4 года назад

      wilfried gronau thanks for the support! Yes, I watched all those video’s before I made my purchase of the Honda Passport. It’s true, the suspension parts are more robust in the Ridgeline. I wondered what parts the Passport had (Ridgeline or Pilot?), until this day I’m not totally sure, but I believe it’s from the Pilot, I just have different rear strut towers to give me 0.8 inches more ground clearance over the Pilot. Suspension setup and steering ratio is a tad bit different too.

      Erin Russell that’s right! I’ve had some of my best showers in this annex room. I just prop a water spigot jug on top of one of the seats and cup my hands to catch the water and clean myself. I also use a expandable water bucket to catch the water and stand on a foam mat to keep my feet nice and clean.

  • @PatrickRich
    @PatrickRich 4 года назад +1

    Thats good thinking. Just remember to use those as anchors if possible. you've increased the wind loading but not the resistance to the wind. You could simply put rocks on them, or get some stakes.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  4 года назад

      Patrick Rich thanks! I reinforced the tarps with inner velcro straps for the vertical poles. I also place my gear to hold the tarp down. Someone mentioned magnets to secure the tarp onto my vehicle, that’s a good idea too!

    • @PatrickRich
      @PatrickRich 4 года назад +1

      @@JonDZ_Adventuring neodymium are crazy strong, I use some for window nets. They break easy though so watch out for that. I've had my awning blow down even staked. These side panels are a great chance to turn a liability into an asset by giving you more stake down points

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  4 года назад

      @@PatrickRich they break easy? Actually... that's why I have this awning. My awning was given to me, because it wasn't staked down and blew over my friends vehicle, breaking in the process. He gave it to me, knowing that I love to tinker and fix things. These awnings or only held together with these little rivets, so I wasn't surprised that the awning fell apart. I drilled out the rivets and installed 3/8" nut and bolt. I use 6 inch lag bolts to stake down the awning.

      Sorry for the late reply. I had someone sew in the 3/8” rope, but it’s not necessary. You can simply fold and overlap the sidewall over the rope and then feed it through into the awning channel. Hope that helps.

    Please advise. Just use it yesterday. Due to heavy rain, the awning stored lots water. And it makes side pole support, bent. We hardly can push it back to its place. Here in Indonesia, heavy rain are unpredicted, any advise how to prevent it from bend? And how can i fix side pole support that has bent? (Not the vertical pole support).

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  2 года назад

      You might be able to purchase those side poles separate. You can simply unbolt the damaged pole and install the replacement. To make this this doesn’t happen again, get an extending pole to put the middle of the awning upwards, so that it’s like a roof hut 🛖, that way water won’t collect. Good luck! Let me know how it goes. I now have a new 180 degree awning that’s built much tougher. It will collect water, but the arms of made of honey comb aluminum and it would be really difficult to bend.

      Peter Tran I purchased two 10x10 foot. The slim shady is 6.5x6.5 feet. You’ll need to cover 19.5 feet of wall, so the two 10x10’s will be a good option. I’d prolly opt for a dark color btw. The beige let’s a lot of light in, and I don’t have complete privacy when the sun is out.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring

      Jerry Lee it definitely helps. I’ve been using magnets to better secure the walls to my vehicle. An area that’s not covered is under the vehicle, so that would be an area for mosquitos to get to you. My recommendation would be to use these sidewalls on an actual 10x10 easy up. This will ensure you have an enclosed safe space. They also make tents specifically to block bugs and mosquitos
