I was just thinking about this today with regard to how each of these philosophies would frame the recent developments in global nuclear postures, the nuclear non-proliferation movement, and the conditions that existed to birth the current executive political cultures of the pivotal powers. Thank you for the post.

in studying philosophical history and the general swings between idealism, cynicism and realism (which is the new thesis), is there any research today that drills into the huge liberal shift in the US? Further, in analyzing the radical liberal shift, is there any correlation between liberalism and existentialism? And existentialism and suicide?

these conversations are awesome. Keep them coming. I like the back and forward nature of it as well as not knowing where the conversation will lead and end. Keen for you and Dan to have a chat about the replication crisis and what that entails if you two were still thinking of it.

All of my favorite people are fictional characters, figments of other peoples imaginations I call them. I feel a bit validated now. I like your channel, thanks for the videos.

Skye who I think is very bright gave a very weak response IMO to the question of suicide in regards to existentialism. Sort of glossed over the ideas of suffering and dread to paint a rosy picture of lifes possibilities which actually don't exist for much of humanity. In other words it's a value issue as to whether one is willing to live as a slave and find meaning in that as opposed to saying give me liberty or give me death. I suspect she has yet to come across the serious dread part of existentialism in her short and possibility privileged life. Not that I hope she ever does have to confront it. I kind of have a crush on her lol.

35:00 it is not true that we can get out of the house on fire any time and if we stay we cannot complain because we found enough reason to stay.
the survival instinct, the fear of pain are not things we can control and they force you to stay in the smoky house

People put themselves in harm's way and subject themselves to pain in all sorts of professions. You absolutely can control the fear of pain.

This is why there is Stoicism, to overcome the fear and the "walls" of instincts.
