I love story where the navy was sourcing more SMG’s and HK was like “Hey check out this awesome new SMG we made, it’s called the UMP” and the navy replied “That’s really cool, we’ll take more MP5’s please.”
@@BrandonLS93 I know it's a sad sad fact of life my brother please bring back the early 2000s because that's when I was a teenager I'm a man of the old school even in the 90s you didn't have this bullshit going on you know what I'm saying dude
Can we all take a minute to appreciate that in the midst of RUclips’s bullshittery, Brandon still puts magazines in his firearms on film for us? Thank you for teaching us such evils Brandon!
That´s because RUclips did step back....they realized the Opposition from all "Gun Tubers " who change to different Platforms, so they lost Customers, means they lost Money. They got kicked where it hurts the most.....
I unsubbed from everyone that complied with that. We don't have the luxury of entertaining nonsense rules anymore. We've been pushed into such a tiny corner that we can't afford to lose any ground.
For me, it was Counter-Strike. It is funny that he calls the recoil "awkward", in the game, it is so controllable, thanks to the (relatively) slow fire-rate that I could consistently get head-shots!
That's because their original intent wasn't to make the default version 45acp necessarily. The only reason why people think of it as a 45 smg is because they were bidding for us military contracts and were told that the military wanted 45s. It was just supposed to be the new universal lower production cost design, hence the name. It's just that whenever anyone had a choice for 9mm, nearly all the clients they were marketing to just decided to pay the extra to get mp5s. Ian at forgotten weapons has covered all this in a very interesting video. Worth a watch if you haven't already.
@@bullzebub That was literally my thoughts on this gun when Ian covered it. It really should've just been an upgrade package, maybe make it easier to rechamber in .45 or .40.
I remember being so disappointed the first time I shot one. It was such a sexy looking update in photographs. But then I got my hands on it and realized how absolutely massive it is compared to the sleek MP5, and the recoil is absurdly worse thanks to the direct blowback mechanism. It was just such a huge let down and a huge step backwards performance-wise for HK submachine guns.
@paintballplayer700 As far as I know it wasn't intended to be an upgrade nor 45, that's just what US military was asking for at the time, and it was intended as a budget model gun. But when you have US defense budget money you just spend the extra and get the MP5s turns out lol
Never had the chance to play with a UMP-45 myself, but a friend described the recoil as "like a lead slinky". He said it was really weird because it would kick back but then jump forward off your shoulder before your body was done absorbing the recoil. I assume that's from the heavy bolt slamming back forward.
Honestly, as someone who plays csgo quite frequently, I was legitimately surprised at how the real thing is actually function as it does in game. In the game, it bounces around a lot, and is mostly only good for close range sprays and tap fireing. I had always assumed that that was for balancing reasons, but apparently it is quite accurate to the real ump lol. Crazy to see a gun that is actually kind of faithful to the irl counterpart apart from the moderately slower firerate. (To be frank, I have shot other guns from that game, like the glocks, the desert eagle, etc, and with the pistols especially, I noticed that they weren’t feeling as good as how the irl ones did, so I assumed this was the case with the other guns as well, and it was surprising that it wasn’t)
That's all PCCs but especially in .45. I had a Beretta CX4 in 9mm, it's incredibly fun and ergo, but had a huge ass bolt (blowback) that gives it a bizarre recoil impulse. The simple physics is that recoil is mass 2 (squared) x velocity which already makes pistols rounds have way more recoil relative to their power vs smaller fast rounds, but .45ACP is at the extreme end of recoil vs energy. My 9mm CX4 surprised me as it had more recoil versus my AR and in the opposite way. It had more 'push' from the bullet but it's compounded immediately after with a second push as the bolt decels at the rear with another distinct impulse as the bolt slams shut again. It's weird and hard to describe but every shot you feel the rifle trying to yaw laterally while also pushing the muzzle up then down as the bolt slams open and closed. The AR and similar rounds have a fast, sharp impulse with almost no imparted momentum while PCCs are the polar opposite
@@WayStedYou I'm fine with always blaming the navy 😸😸😸 Still, some of the problems are so obvious they should've been raised earlier. Or full auto was never meant to be viable? Maybe in 3 round burst it's very ok? Was anyone paying attention on 3 round bursts?
I love how Brandon’s first instinct of engaging the safety after the demonstration is so engrained into him that you can occasionally catch it in the slow-motion replay Love it when people aren’t subtle about gun safety like that (as in showing the switch to safety, or saying the weapon is safe/ disarmed, like Dan from Slow Mo Guys)
It was a good concept that came at a time where nobody was asking for A lightweight polymer submachine gun. Especially since the P90 and MP7 dominated what's left of that market. Oh and the MP5 stayed, and the AR replaced the rest.
i like how 3 out of those 5 you mentioned is from hk. Not only because i´m german and plan to work there sometime soon but theres always people who cry hk bad and expensive yet theyre everywhere
Speaking as an Australian who almost never gets his hands on things like this - I’ve actually gotten to fire the semiauto UMP carbine in Hawaii and I loved the feel of it, so I won’t hear a bad word said!
It's a plastic m3 Grease Gun don't let the Germans fool you. The MP5 is like beating someone with a fine cane. The UMP is like beating someone with a crowbar.
I got to fire full auto UMP 45s in Iraq years ago, and I loved them too. Nice weapon in my personal opinion although the single stack mag was screwy. Kangaroo '92 in Darwin and the NT also!
The first submachine gun I ever fired was a UMP-40, with the four-position selector (including the 2-round burst). I rented it at gun range outside of Cincinnati, along with other select-fire goodies over the years. Sadly, that same range closed in 2020, and the current gun range that bought out the building does not do machine gun rentals anymore.
I still think the MP5SD is the most beautiful gun that ever existed lmao. Got to shoot one and was surprised at how quiet it was, could hear the bolt more than the shots and how easy it was to control at full auto.
One of the coolest description of the MP5 was im rainbow six 98. Somthing along the lines of "Terrorists around the world fear that bolt click of the mp5."
My department had a couple UMP's when we were sporting mostly MP-5's. I played around with one during a range day and found the recoil to be more of a hard thump because the bolt is pretty much just a direct blowback while the mp-5 is a butter smooth push. You can put the stock of the mp5 against your chin and it wont hurt, the UMP would hurt. The second big thing is how the magazines load. They load like most pistol magazines, meaning you have to push the previous round down and slide in the new round. The mp5 loads like an AR15 mag, push down and it pops in. Shooting the UMP's 25 round mags all day with the strong spring and loading 25 at a time, well my thumb was dogshit by the end of it.
Loved playing the original R6 and Rogue Spear on the cp. Thats where i was first introduced to the UMP. And then my dad would take me to the local class 3 gun shop that had an indoor range that rented machine guns. We’d rent the MP5 in 9mm and 40 cal that was awesome. And then they got a UMP in and i was hooked lol My favorite sub gun will always be the ole MP5K pdw. It’s just sexy. Everyone is into the MP7 for whatever reason, but it’s not appealing to me like the MP5 and UMP are.
reminds me of one of Zach's fire camp stories about him meeting some elite special ops guy who was sitting around in a hoodie slinging a UMP 45 waiting for a heli in a FOB in Iraq. "Holy shit is that a UMP 45? Can I hold it?" "Sure thing man" The guy was alone, had kevlar under his hoodie, and a ton of UMP 45 mags. we're still speculating who this was to this day. Delta and ISA were thrown around quite a bit.
At one point in time I had the sad version of this gun, the USC. The magazines were HK expensive but only held 10 rounds. It was a light grey rather than black for some reason. HK did everything in their power to force you to buy an entire lower as well as other compliance parts even if all you wanted to do was use the double-stack mags (which are absurdly long. You will notice if you ever try to shoot the gun prone.) The sights were basic, the recoil unimpressive, and HK didn't even thread the ridiculous 16" barrel. It was not a good gun or one that was particularly fun to shoot, and yet somehow I still managed to sell it for pretty much exactly what I paid for it. The biggest thing I remember from owning that gun was thinking that Hi-Point could have made the exact same gun for under $400, and the magazines wouldn't have been restricted to 10 rounds.
It's so cool but SO sad! They had to go and water it down so hard it turned light grey. The thumbhole stock is nasty, the fact that you need an allen wrench to field strip it is miserable, but it's still nowhere near as bad as what they did to the sad version of the G36, the SL8.
I did some LEO sales years ago, and the price sheet showed the MSRP for LEO being $849 per UMP-45 making it very cost effective for local depts. Especially for the ones still using 45acp for their duty pistols. I have used the UMP-40 but my favorite SMG for general fun use is always going to be the UZI.
@@WayStedYou Not really. While the 9mm round would make the recoil more manageable, it would still face the same problem that half of the gun’s weight is in the bolt. For police work that is fine however since full auto is going to be used in very close range and anything beyond that will likely use semi. $849 for an HK gun is quite nice.
@@MPdude237 Usually, police don't have full auto weapons. Full auto is more like military use, or if you happen to be a weapon manufacturer, just like Brandon, you have a licence for it.
UMP45 is the chosen one. She wasn't built with a greater purpose in mind, didn't had any experimental super technology used in creating her. No, she was cannon fodder like thousands, maybe million others. She has no connection to the powers in this world, no destiny or nemesis from the start. But, even when starting from the same or worse position as countless others, she worked herself up. She forged her own path in blood and suffering and she has the scars to prove it. She is the outliner, the Anomaly. Our Neo. She is the true Hero of this Story. M4 was *build* to be special. UMP45 just *is*.
I served in Noshahr Canals and Damavand Peak using the UMP-45, iron sights only. Fantastic weapon, very accurate. Never had a jam. 69/420, would operate again.
Hi! French cop here. Just found your channel. Like what you do. We've been using the UMP for nearly 10 years now ( 2015 if i remember, just after the terrorist attack of this year), but in 9mm. Cool gun but remind me of my childhood toys. Good thing is that is light. Cause when i have it, i'm gonna keep it for a quite long time. As a lefthanded shooter i just don't like that h&k didn't think to us and where we put our sling. I have to put my sling on the skeleton stock. I would have loved to see a comparison between mp5 and ump9 and saw if, in 9mm a suppressed ump could replace your mp5🤔 I guess no. the MP5 is way better good looking!
I carried the UMP on plenty of missions, a devastating weapon up close but woe to you if you get engaged in the open. I'll never forget the boys we lost in Shanghai or the Paris metro, but I know they're up in heaven PTFO.
Shanghai... man, I have PTSD from my experience there, was on a classified mission and our elevator stopped on the wrong floor, 10 men shot at us as we waited for the door to close, we were carrying UMPs aswell.
I always loved the ump-45. It makes an excellent concealed carry option in low-vis meetings. Even when we’d drop our body armor to do key leader engagements in AFG, it was nice to know we had a laptop case with enough oomph to get back out if things turned badly. PS- in that type of a situation you want to leave the suppressor at home. The noise of a .45 putting in work inside a building is enough of an indicator to your buddies outside that something has gone wrong.
Brandon, you forgot to mention the bolt has a chamber with metal powder to absorb some of the force of the bolt closing, minimizing bolt "bounce-back" when it slams forward, increasing reliability.
Hey Brandon, would you be interested on doing a video about what it's like to be an FFL and whether it's worth it for smaller hobbyists who might be looking to regain some of the capital spent on the sport?
Should probably add that this is more for an 07 and comes from the perspective of someone who has been enjoying "building" custom firearms for personal enjoyment and has considered expanding it into a side hustle
I can see why the UMP never really took off, although it’s probably mutually exclusive to have a smooth-firing “really fast semi-auto” gun in .45 which also is polymer light. This seems just like HK doing HK when a modernized grease gun would probably be the better call for a .45 subgun in most cases. Having said that, given a choice between this or an MP5, I’d probably go UMP. That’s solely because for whatever reason, I have never shot 9mm handguns well, so an MP5 would be the only thing I’d be feeding 9mm - not the case with .45.
Ah, the UMP-45. I remember reading about it on TVTropes that despite being designed as a cheaper option, it never quite caught on for that niche and the MP5 still outsells it
i bought a UMP when we played airsoft as teens and I really appreciated how good of a replica it was for the rather cheap price since it was from a similar (but probably cheaper and less durable) polymer and still used metal for all the right parts, like the sights, rails, charging handle and muzzle-tip
Another cool thing that's kind of Forgotten, is if you've dwelled into the parts kit world for a while now, there were 10m MP5 kits, that were converted to 45 ACP, RCM I believe we're making the barrels and bolts.
The only time I ever encountered one of these was when I was in 3/75th, and we saw the JMAU personnel with these. Us lower enlisted wanted to know all about them and thought they were badass. I remember the surgeon saying "look, if I need to use this, things have gone seriously wrong."
Hey Ragnar, after I left 2/75 in 2010 and when I was in DC the Pentagon guards were rocking them. I actually have a converted USC UMP clone, I love it. RLTW
Hey Brandon, I wanna say that I really enjoy your content! I've only found you recently, but you've helped me see a new view on the idea of gun safety and gun laws in the US and have really helped me open up to different ideas on how guns should be addressed in the states. Thank you, and I can't wait to see more of your content. You're honestly hilarious and always manage to get a laugh out of me!
I once heard the UMP recoil impulse described as shaking a brick inside a shoebox, but against your shoulder. I’ve never shot one, but that Looks about right.
I like the controls that they have in the UMP. They seem to have taken the best setups out there and combined them, from the MP charging handle, to the great mag release, and the AR style bolt release. Me, like everyone else in the world LOVE the MP5, and I’ve always thought “man, if they just had this in .45 and last round hold open there would just be sunshine coming out the barrel!”
G3 (or better yet: The Swedish AK4D "upgrade block" of the G3) and MP5 is all you need. 7.62 for when you need to teach lessons about what constitutes cover and what does not. 9mm for the urban environment and high mobility assault. The 5.56 tries to give you both but delivers on neither.
I had the pleasure of shooting the MP5 once and I was genuinely taken aback. I don't know if all models have the integrated suppressor or not, but this one did. And it was almost Hollywood movie "silencer" quiet. I had some experience with various suppressors and none of them were what I would call silent. Quieter yes, but it still sounded like gun fire only 90% less than no suppressor. The MP5 suppressor was so good I actually heard the click/clack of the mechanism cycling. It did not have the "pewt pewt" chirp that the Hollywood version made, but the level was low enough we did not need hearing protection. And the accuracy was stellar. The round went exactly where you aimed. Every time. I was only able to fire 20 rounds and couldn't test different ranges, but it was, and still is my most desired firearm. If I could just get $4k together and actually FIND one. The civilian version is semi-auto only of course, and rare.
Integrated silencer models are called MP5SD, the shorter version of MP5 is called MP5K... All three typed came out is many different versions (fixed/telescopic/folding stock, burst/no burst, etc.)
someone should develop an add-on that adds the hollywood _"pewt pewt*_ or star wars laser shooting sounds when shooting with well suppressed pew-pews. pretty sure there's a huge nerdish market for this before the -PLA- chinese -counterfeiters- manufacturers start making copies. 😽👌
@@cwx8 i have a 9mm sbr and it definitely does bounce. But its a very unique bounce that resets after each shot which is why I wanted to see the difference
One of the greatest things about Brandon and this channel is he goes through the whole breakdown and assembly for each gun along with a history lesson and of course fires it
I’ve never had any experience with the UMP45, but I wanted to say how the bolt looks a lot like the bolt on the CZ Scorpion E3 S1. The recoil impulse looks similar to the Scorpion as well, with the Scorpion being slightly less. Great Video!
Yeah, you just summed up 3 ways the recoil impulse is higher than its older brother and also the reason why someone would buy one anyhow. UMP is pretty straightforward and would have been a decent offering if people would just stop comparing it to the mp5.
The UMP45 has straight magazines, the UMP9 has curved ones. They even changed that in PUBG when the gun was changed. It went from being a total beast (UMP9) to being one of the worst guns the game has ever seen (UMP45), then months later a patch was released, finally balancing the weapon, and making it competitive again.
My first MG was a MAC in .45 so compared to that, the UMP is a dream to shoot (control). Also there were a some PD's that opted for these back in the 90's.. not because they carried 45 handguns (everyone was using .40's don't ya know)- but because the 40 cal MP5'S had issues (real or imagined is up for debate).. oh, and the 9mm was still a bastard puny European round then...
I haven't shot the UMP-45 but have shot an MP5-SD and had actually started to get one while I had my SOT. The Price of the gun wasn't a Big factor but I started thinking about how much ammo I'd run through plus I wouldn't want to give it up if I let my SOT go (which I did). I can say that for those out there that haven't shot one, If you get the chance then jump on it! It'll put a Smile on your face that even your Wife/Girlfriend/or Both couldn't Slap Off, LOL! 😁
I shot a few MP5s and a .40 UMP, I prefer the MP5. For all the same reasons you mentioned. Now that P90 in full auto, which I have also shot, is awesome. I want to SBR my semi P90S, after shooting the f/a P90!
I always have found the UMP to be a bit of an odd but also interesting weapon. Even tough it's in many video games, there aren't a lot of militaries that use it. Especially when compared to the MP5 and MP7.
The story I’ve always heard told is that the Military didn’t request this weapon but rather US SWAT since they wanted a good submachine gun but since they don’t have the budget of the US Military they couldn’t afford MP5’s so H&K made the UMP-45 as a cheaper alternative to SWAT and Law Enforcement.
@@BigManLaskey Nah, Ian from forgotten weapons has a video on it straight from the horse's mouth at the HK grey room. The UMP was originally supposed to be a replacement for the much more costly to produce mp5 and can accept barrels and bolts for more calibers. The cost of production difference would have been so great that even at the lower price, their margins would have been better and they could have used the same design for more clients. It was designed to be universal, hence the name. It was pitched to the navy to replace the mp5 but wasn't chosen. Pretty much everyone with the budget to do so just kept choosing mp5s over the UMP and it's primary claim to fame ended up just being that it comes in 45 too, so much so that many people think that it only came in 45
@Mr.Gary J Laskey for awhile there, before the huge number of military surplus mp5s flooded the market, there were quite a few police departments buying the UMP-9.
Because why pay HK prices for Hi-Point technology? The thing that makes the MP5 great is the roller-delay which mitigates recoil. Delayed blowback requires precision and is therefore pricey. Direct blowback is the simplest, cheapest, thing to make. That's why Hi-Points are direct blowback. There's nothing HK can do with their precision manufacturing that makes direct blowback any better. The UMP-45 is one step above the Hi-Point 4595, that step being a double-stack mag. In fact, the Hi-Point has a couple design advantages because by putting the mag in the grip, they make it easier to reload quickly and you get a longer barrel for the overall length.
@@Bacteriophagebs Pretty much, though hk polymer is by far superior to the hipoint stuff. Testimonials aside, they have load and break point numbers in some of their trials documents and they're absolutely stellar for the weight. Given the old usp frames, I'm not surprised. Wish they made a modular poly framed mp5 instead
I finally got through the CF podcast you did, I swear you increased the intelligence of the room. It was an excellent discussion, rather amazing considering the time and alcohol consumption. Thanks for your videos.
I own both. Mp5 variant and a HK USC I did the UMP conversion on. Both are sweet. The MP5 is pretty standard like any 9mm pcc. The UMP is a different beast, it’s also tack driver. Only complaint is magazine pricing. Aftermarket mags are $50 from hkparts, $70 for the same thing if you buy from lwrc, and $100 for OEM mags.
I remember a news story about 10 years ago or more where some guy decided to fire on the guards at one of the entrances to the Pentagon. One of the guards at the Pentagon had a UMP. The firefight did not last long after it engaged.
I got to fire a original UMP-45 a few years back that was suppressed and it was awesome, really quiet as in you heard just the bolt move and the ricochet of the bullet hitting something in the distance. If I could afford one I would definitely would have one in my collection for sure. But I would also love a MP-5 in my collection as much if not more....
I used an MP5 in SWAT and did a test and evaluation on a UMP, which came with a suppressor. I'm a 45 guy (we were carrying USP45 pistols at the time) and have always loved both HK weapons and the almighty. 45ACP. That said, the UMP just wasn't as good as the MP5. HK actually toyed around with a .45 MP5 but it never went anywhere. The MP5 is just so much smoother shooting than the UMP I had to admit we were better off staying with what we had. I miss the days of dropping a letter to a company and getting to play with machine guns for 30 days. It was awesome. In that shipment I also received 2 G36's and a USP Tactical. The suppressor fit both the UMP and the USP. Fun times.
I was always drawn to the UMP in Modern Warfare just because of its design. I never had Xbox live so i would just play campaign over and over again and whenever i saw it i had to use it.
Make sure you keep the extractor/drop safety clean. It will get gummed up and break which can take the fishhook looking drop safet and run it right through the polymer frame
That's some crazy recoil. It would be cool if you can stick a visible laser to the side of it and focus a camera on the target down range when you go full auto (uh, I mean very fast semiauto) just to see how much the rounds spread down range.
Gotta say, I am a .45acp guy. When I was in Central America (back in the 80’s) in an engagement in what was supposed to be a safe AO so sidearms only, 7 rounds 6 one shot stops. My compatriot in the SAS had a Hi Power, 13 rounds 6 down with double taps. His ball over penetrated. Anyway, love the .45 and love to see modern firarms chambered in .45. Since I am not a class III dealer, so no samp;les, and retired, until they delete the NFA and GCA, I have no hope of getting this or my grail gun, select fire Vector. But great to keep abreast of whwt is out there and since I have pretty much no hearing left, my Krink is my bed gun.,
The UMP series has the advantage of being lightweight with the tradeoff of recoil and muzzle climb. I've shot them in both .45 and 9mm. The .45 mags felt bulky and long while being a challenge to fit in existing pouches (had to get new ones). I thought the gate catch on the suppressor for the flange barrel was interesting, but not as quick/efficient as the 3-lug. I prefer the MP-5 (can get in 10mm if wanting a hotter caliber). My current pick would be the CMMG 9mm as it feels like a more modernized MP5.
the tactical team I was on for a correctional institution trained with UMP's in 40S&W ( I know .40 ew, but its what our handguns were chambered in as well, and the state didnt want to foot the bill for something better) and they were fun as hell to qualify with and use, however they definitely dirtied themselves quickly, and we broke more magazines doing drills that id care to admit. They were used 0 times. had an armory with 20 of them, and whenever tactical was called in, it was "hey here's this 870 that's been here since we could still smoke inside the prison, good luck"
@@HalfBreedMix Theres just no need for it anymore. 9mm has surpassed it, so at this point just just carry a 10mm. The OG cartridge that .40 was made from.
Excellent review. I remember seeing this in the 80's at Garcia's Gun Shop in Miami. Didn't appeal to me the caliber or the design. Now I see Benicio wielding it in "Sicario" and you get to see the fine lines of the H&k UMP. Plus .45 Auto is priced decently. Peace
I have heard that German operators do not like the UMP because of the polymer construction of the lower receiver claw. If that breaks, you basically need a whole new lower and that occur easily.
Nice, having one in .40 is exactly what I was thinking about, commented on it. I feel like that’s a good cartridge for this type of firearm. Good mass but also good velocity.
@@DoggoWillink years ago i bought demilled kits with the 8" barrel, bolt, trigger group, etc in 40 and 45. I would show you but I'm a slacker and haven't sent in my form yet so th e 40 still has the long 45 barrel on it for now. Maybe this conversation will motivate me to get it done!
I got to run a couple of mags through a UMP 45 years ago, and yeah, it is a very Jumpy Boi in full auto recoil. Whereas the MP5 smg I got to run about 500 rounds through was just butter. Love the MP5 roller delay locking!
great video but i prefer in 9mn more efficient i don t know why usa is always using 45 acp. Use 10mn if u want powerfull cartrige . 9 mn less recoil more precision and deadly bullet.
The UMP 45 was a dream to shoot. I shot a few if them in Iraq years ago, and they are accurate even in full auto. The single stack mag was a little goofy, though. Try as I might however, the SF guys wouldn't let me sign for and take it
I know you probably won’t see this but thank you. You have gotten me through a lot of hard times in life and I am going through a lot right now and j want you to know you’re the only thing keeping me going. Hey man push the Pin, after you remove it, in one of the holes in the Stock, so you dont loose it. And as a right handed shooter push the Pins back in from left to right into the Gun, so you cant push them accidentially out while carrying the gun. 🤘
If Matrix Reloaded taught me anything, the UMP-45 is capable of creating fist-sized holes in a car, flip cars around but never actually kill anything. For as it is the Lord's caliber, the Lord also said "Thou shalt not kill" and the UMP-45 provides.
Beautiful mustache and love the ump. I prefer burst fire, yes full auto can b useful but u blow through ur ammo pretty quick. Never knew the weapon was mostly plastic and it's no longer Susan. Would love to see them make a metal version of the ump 45
Thank you Brandon for showcasing the UMP. I think of it this way: MP-5 is the Cadillac of smgs, but the UMP is like a Toyota truck, not the best looking but will get through anything #AKGNotificationSquad
When i was in Gendarmerie Nationale (Now i'm learning gunsmithing) i had an UMP9 and it was a cool gun to shoot, it could have been great to do a comparison between the MP5 9mm and the UMP9 :D
The UMP seems pretty similiar to the Scorpion Evo in construction and operation. Maybe my home defense gun has some German space magic in it even if it is made a lil further to the east. I hope I can get a TommyBuilt one day.
get an imported usc-45, and put the semi auto parts into a legal to buy military lower and get one of those stock conversion blocks for it. only two other tiny things need to be changed if you want to have the out of battery safety and only one thing if you are using the shit semi auto parts from usc. the US made magazines are also cheaper. or just use the usc and not worry about folding stock, not like that "thumbhole stock" changes how it is held...
Got to know this gun only through games, and I'm dating myself by saying this, but I first fell in love with it when it was included in a Quake 3 mod called True Combat. It was my favorite submachine gun in that game. Something of its shape and size made me like it.

I love this Gun, he served me very well in the Streets of Rust and Highrise in 2009
Served me well in Counter-Strike 1.5
It served me on Rust and Dome and it still serves faithfully in Customs and Interchange
yeah until that one demon mlg 360 noscoped you with the intervention
For me, it was Counter-Strike. It is funny that he calls the recoil "awkward", in the game, it is so controllable, thanks to the (relatively) slow fire-rate that I could consistently get head-shots!
My favorite part about the UMP is when HK decided to take a heavier recoiling round and remove the best recoil mitigating factor from the design.
@@CtrlAltRetreat Good info, but tangential to my point I think.
yeah. this really deserves a roller delayed system.
@@bullzebub That was literally my thoughts on this gun when Ian covered it. It really should've just been an upgrade package, maybe make it easier to rechamber in .45 or .40.
My thoughts exactly. I suspect manufacturing costs.
Regardless of it's position and performance in history you can't deny it cut's a *really* nice silhouette.
Yeah it could've been beautiful if it wasn't made from plastic.
@paintballplayer700
As far as I know it wasn't intended to be an upgrade nor 45, that's just what US military was asking for at the time, and it was intended as a budget model gun. But when you have US defense budget money you just spend the extra and get the MP5s turns out lol
That "soap we are leaving" took me right back
Never had the chance to play with a UMP-45 myself, but a friend described the recoil as "like a lead slinky".
The thing that surprised me most was the decently fast full auto fire rate. Most video games depict a slow firing UMP.
I think that started with cs
@@BS-bd5uq it actually did
Game balance probably
Dumb game mechanics. Just like having snipers 1 hit in the chest while they have another gun chambered in the same round that does less damage
Direct blowback guns fire rate significantly change depending on the ammunition used.

It was a good concept that came at a time where nobody was asking for A lightweight polymer submachine gun.
Especially since the P90 and MP7 dominated what's left of that market. Oh and the MP5 stayed, and the AR replaced the rest.

Agreed.

I wonder why the ump9 didnt get much more sales if its basically a cheaper version of the mp5

Yeah, all they had to do was make a grease gun with a folding stock, better sights, and picatinny rails. But nope.

Facts I will never get the appeal of 556 😂😂
@OP 100% 😂

@@BigManLaskey
Nah, Ian from forgotten weapons has a video on it straight from the horse's mouth at the HK grey room.

@EvilAsh110 one. It was only available through multiplayer or cheats.
“Right handed and wrong handed” killed me 😂
1:04 Cpt price headass
That's some crazy recoil. It would be cool if you can stick a visible laser to the side of it and focus a camera on the target down range when you go full auto (uh, I mean very fast semiauto) just to see how much the rounds spread down range.
1:37 is a bit short for a video, but I enjoyed it, glad to know the ump-45 is in fact a gun!
But great to keep abreast of whwt is out there and since I have pretty much no hearing left, my Krink is my bed gun.,
The UMP 45 is how i got my first tactical nuke in mw2 on terminal. Good memories.
The State did foot the bill for something better,,,,,,,,,,,,, that being .40
@@HalfBreedMix .40S&W is a garbage caliber thats been made obsolete by modern cartridge manufacturing.
@@BB-is5qv and you think the same advancements aren't applied to .40 ? ?
@@HalfBreedMix Theres just no need for it anymore. 9mm has surpassed it, so at this point just just carry a 10mm. The OG cartridge that .40 was made from.
@@BB-is5qv too bad most companies load it essentially like .40 lol
Excellent review. I remember seeing this in the 80's at Garcia's Gun Shop in Miami. Didn't appeal to me the caliber or the design. Now I see Benicio wielding it in "Sicario" and you get to see the fine lines of the H&k UMP. Plus .45 Auto is priced decently. Peace
3:25 this kinda funny cuz Susan is gone now 😂😂
I have heard that German operators do not like the UMP because of the polymer construction of the lower receiver claw. If that breaks, you basically need a whole new lower and that occur easily.
Love the UMP-45, it’s my patrol “rifle”, along with a SBS, and a trusted 1911, great video!
Would be interesting to compare CMMG Banshee radial-delayed SMG with those two.
right?
I have two HK USC converted to UMP clones, one in .45 and one in .40.
Definitely two of my very favorite guns!
I love the UMPs, I've always thought of it as the SMG that came from the future, it looks so cool, especially when you slap an optic on it.
I got to run a couple of mags through a UMP 45 years ago, and yeah, it is a very Jumpy Boi in full auto recoil. Whereas the MP5 smg I got to run about 500 rounds through was just butter. Love the MP5 roller delay locking!
"We're gonna fuck with it" -Brandon
Ngl thought this was gonna be a very different video
The fact that your videos now include a perfectly timed A.D.D. break makes my brain feel loved
Thanks Brandon. You make me feel ok when I'm not. I mean that in the most heartfelt way I can.
Obviously you need to compare it to the MP-5, but I'd be interested in hearing how it's performance compares to the Kriss Vector in the same caliber.
great video but i prefer in 9mn more efficient i don t know why usa is always using 45 acp.
You and the other guys like donut and Scott. Thank you all for being fun and entertaining content creators
Stay strong, life will suck at times but at every dark night is a bright morning.
@@LORD-xg2ks thank you.
@Chris thank you too
Shut up
All of you comment section mfers better give this guy more likes so Brandon sees it.
'Doing a dump with the ump' had me rolling on the fucking floor
Another wonderful video Brandon!
I wouldn´t bet on it.....;-) It will do it´s Job. Because it´s German, and the Guy´s at HK are Atheists! ;-) They kill everyone equal.
Do you still live in France? If so, are you learning gun smithing for a job or hobby?
@@Heywoodthepeckerwood yes i still live in France, i'm doing my studies at the gunsmithing school of Saint Etienne
10:16 Nice! One less pin to have to F with... Smart.
3:20 umm.... Susan left. like... a week ago
Got to know this gun only through games, and I'm dating myself by saying this, but I first fell in love with it when it was included in a Quake 3 mod called True Combat. It was my favorite submachine gun in that game. Something of its shape and size made me like it.
That's ok, I am guessing I used in Combat Arms way back in the day lol!
