I just ordered the Apollo Twin MKII, and I'm looking forward to working with it very much. I just would like to say thank you very much for taking the time out to show some of the ways this unit works. Looking forward to your other tutorial videos.
So glad i got rid of my dbx 286s and focusrite solo (2nd gen) to get the apollo twin mkII coupled with a rode's nt1-a mic, this just took my music quality & mix to another level...thanks bro!
Sold my Scarlett 2i2 for this usb twin. Was a NIGHTMARE to get to work on my laptop and took about 6 hrs of installing and Uninstalling but now it works great. Fkn love this thing now. Sounds amazing
But do you get the same quality? Because if you put the effect after recording your no longer going through the in this case compressor using the unison preamp in the interface, your just adding it on a clean recording “digitally” ... correct me if I’m wrong, I’m also new and I’m trying to understand how it works.
Just bought a Uad Apollo Twin, things a beast! Super, super clean mic pres. My music actully sounds like professionally recorded music. This video really explained a lot about tracking and printing. My question is what happens when you take the plugs-in off after you track through them. Does it change the sound?
Nice! It depends if you recorded with them in monitor or record mode. Monitor you just hear the effects and that's it. But record you print the effects as well. I would use monitor so the artist can use reverb and get a better performance then in the mix I can sculpt the reverb to however I want it
Hey guys just stopping by I had a quick question on this same topic. I just received a Apollo Twin SOLO...I received as a gift! I know I may have trouble with the DSP BUT my question is when I track and print the effects on the track....to save DSP can I remove the effects then record on another track placing those effects one THAT track....then do again and again?
Some people can make a peanut butter sandwich horribly complicated. I like that this video is so basic and straightforward, perfect for the newbie who just wants to get going with their new Apollo and Logic.
Great intro video, thanks!! But I'm confused... if the Aux Channels are for listening, but do not record, what is the purpose of the Aux channels? What is the reason we would set up effects only to listen but not record? Cheers?
I think it’s important to state that the “in the interface” plugin is after the A/D convention. The compressor is digital. It’s on screen and in your computer. It’s not hardware.
I have the ssl 2+, I need monitoring live vocals with effects only, can I do that with the satellite? or I have to have UAD interface for zero latency?
Please someone , how can you do exactly this but on the masterbus ? . Also i dont have the UAD . Is their any other programs like this (like menubus) that work with windows and that it works with the master output before it hits the daw . ?
+Raw Techique Studios important to note that if you have the thunderbolt version you don't need to mute the audio in the Daw. No need to use console at all except for unison. Thunderbolt is fast!
May i ask why you dont put the compressor in the unison insert above where you have put it, sorry but this confuses me. Also when i put an insert onto a Chanel and i go into luna and record and i come back to console the inserts have gone. 🤷🏻
Hey Bro, many thanks. This is most helpful. I have never seen an explanation like this, and let's me know I don't need a front end device-it's built in! Blessings,Bro!
Thank you I did that real verb nice vocal to bear as I'm rapping you the best. Question what's the difference between nice vocal1 an nice vocals2 on the real verb pro?
Hi how do you get source to show monitor? mine shows mix and I cannot hear myself through my headphones when talking through the mic? Great video too. Thanks
is it true there's no latency with the Apollo Twin when you're running an effect via the interface (opposed to running it in your DAW and using software monitoring)?
quick question with doing this if i have auto tune already and not through uad can i still use autotune to monitor or record before placing it in the daw or does it only support the plugins you get from them?
What software are u using to record your screen? And how did you set it up? Am having a problem where my recorded voice stutterers! Can’t seem to figure it out!
So the real question here is what is the advantage to using a compressor before a track is printed into your daw or simply using a plug-in later? Obviously with the plug-in later you can alternate any point at all. So is there any advantage to using the compressor inside the Apollo before the tracks get into your computer?? Thanks!
There are a couple advantages to compression from an outboard compressor or the UAD compresion option. One is you can prevent clipping with outbaord compression but a plugin in the DAW is already stuck with the clipped signal. So an outboard compressor can protect your audio. Another benefit is you get a fatter sound with color (depending on the compressor used) in the recording process. This is based on your taste but I do like compression during recording. It just sounds good. The disadvantages are you are stuck with the compression so if it is too heavy there us no turning back.
How can you record your insert effects, but still want to ONLY HEAR Autotune engaged while recording vocals. (So EQ + compression recorded/printed, but autotune not printed in your take).
Confused the hell out of me.. Your diagram shows the mic plugging into the back of the Apollo. It plugs in the front of mine, am I doing something wrong ?
Great Video! Since the Apollo twin does not have two head phone jacks what solutions would you use to monitor what the artist is signing as well has providing a headphone mix for the artist. That is if you are in a studio that does not have a separate vocal both? Thanks
Richard Grey Richard - I bought a cheap behringer Headphone amp (sorry) and just plug outputs 3/4 into it if I need another heapdhone out. (or 4 headphone outs). Works fine and cost me $20.for the Amp. They are CHEAP. Route the cue mix to 3/4 in the DAW. Done.
Excellent video! This was very helpful! How can I reduce compression with inserts on guitar? I bought an Apollo Twin and have been recording guitar with the XY method with an SM 57 and SE 2200. I use the acoustic guitar inserts, but when I record and play it back, it sounds tinny. What can I do to avoid that over compression?
For XY recording I would use the same mic for the stereo setup. For 2 mics I would just point both at the amp speaker straight on. Try moving them around because directly at the cone and off axis sound different. Then blend to taste. The tinny sound might be phase cancelation
Man by this last week i discovered your channe,l i find myself more and more interested in your tutorials , they just work for me!!! So keep on the good videos , i own myself a satellite quad and was wondering if when i launch let's say a fairchild on a track in pro tools is it still pre computer or is this just a featured embeded in the apollo only??? Thanks for watching and glad you like the videos. The UAD plugins, I think, are all processed on the chip inside of the UAD gear. So they are not processed in the computer. But my video is referring to compression in the recording phase being applied pre computer by bing used inside of the UAD Console.
Thank for your video. I got a problem when I try to record a vocal to Pro Tools listen a mix to sing. The Music track that Sounds in pro tools is printed also in the vocal track I’m recording. I mute the channel but still printing the music track. Do you Have a solution to this? . Thanks!
let me ask you this? if you wanted to, you could print the reverb on that track like you are doing with that compressor and record your vocals into pro tool can you.
I like 24 bit because it has a larger dynamic range. Plus some sources may want a 24 bit version so if you already started there then you are good to go.

Its somewhere on UAD forum. Also the UAD Rec/Mon button only bypasses post AD signals. The unison slot is always recorded in DAW. Doesn't affect the workflow tho - just make sure that the output from Unison pre isn't in the red. The only plugin that compresses before AD as far as I'm aware is the Manley VoxBox
Yes. UNISON is the only time where the plugins "Physically" change the actual Pre Amps. Though the plugs in the other slots are so nice and use the UAD CPU's that it's well worth using. But for altering the input - only UNISON (hiZ/Line/Mic 1-2). Cheers! enjoy your purchase. I am!
Hello In this process, when I use compressor before computer in record mode its possible to have clip (red) signal on mic input ? Because this is happens to me when I have to record somebody whit strong voice even if I turn the mic pre level down its steel clipping. Thanks
I would add reverb in the DAW so you can change it later. But put a reverb on a AUX track then send your vocals via a bus to that AUX track to hear it run through reverb.
Here the trick with uad sound cards, now, try to do a punch, you have to setup a virtual channel for playback, with same aux send setup. oh but wait what if you had music playing back, it would get all the reverb too. no problem just sent up another virtual channel, but wait not its not mixed in the main out, no problem, make a dupilicate reverb on playback track. actually all of this is a problem, a big pain in the a$$. and thats why its not practicle. and why they had to make there own daw. now in luna this gets solved, but if your using any other daw, all i have to say is your going to get good at routing and wasting time.

The new interface doesn't have sends and returns and I didn't want to buy another external preamp so the UAD compressors are the best option for me.
Raw Technique Studios Hi Shaun, your Apollo Twin, it only has 2 in, 2 out?
It has main outs and 2 line outs. Only has 2 inputs though.
Raw Technique what about optical? Can't you add 8 in/out?
rec with 2 mics same time?
You can but if recording in mono and only 1 person I recommend just 1 mic.
I would have kept the outboard compressor. (Unless it was a cheap compressor that didn't sound good) I would rather use outboard gear then plugins.
It was a cheaper compressor (ART Pro VLA 2)
This video is incorrect. Only plugins added in the unison slot on Apollo are pre AD converters.
Where did you read this? I would like to confirm.
Okay I will look around. Thanks for the heads up.
Yes. UNISON is the only time where the plugins "Physically" change the actual Pre Amps. Though the plugs in the other slots are so nice and use the UAD CPU's
that it's well worth using. But for altering the input - only UNISON (hiZ/Line/Mic 1-2). Cheers! enjoy your purchase. I am!
Hello
In this process, when I use compressor before computer in record mode its possible to have clip (red) signal on mic input ? Because this is happens to me when I have to record somebody whit strong voice even if I turn the mic pre level down its steel clipping.
Thanks
Yeah you can clip, try turning down the compressors input so you aren't adding level just compression.
Thank you !
You spelled Apollo incorrectly
Thakns, I will change it
what pro-tools version
I am using pro tools 11
@@RawTechniqueStudios is it compatible with hd pro tools ?
@@MrERLucas as long as you are using UAD hardware then it works
how do I record with reverb
I would add reverb in the DAW so you can change it later. But put a reverb on a AUX track then send your vocals via a bus to that AUX track to hear it run through reverb.
i want to ask you something, would you ever consider using a hardware mic preamp with your apollo twin.
Yeah I would consider it if I recorded more often
Here the trick with uad sound cards, now, try to do a punch, you have to setup a virtual channel for playback, with same aux send setup. oh but wait what if you had music playing back, it would get all the reverb too. no problem just sent up another virtual channel, but wait not its not mixed in the main out, no problem, make a dupilicate reverb on playback track. actually all of this is a problem, a big pain in the a$$. and thats why its not practicle. and why they had to make there own daw. now in luna this gets solved, but if your using any other daw, all i have to say is your going to get good at routing and wasting time.
He said the same thing for half the video ..buddy c’mon already
