    Thanks so much for all the helpful comments crew! These engines are Yanmar 2GM's rated at 13hp @3400 Rpm. Both fresh water cooled. I wouldn't hesitate to open them up and dig into a rebuild in FL where machine shops and resources are plentiful but in the Caribbean they are not (anyone know a machine shop in the Northern windward islands). The other issue is timing. We have to be in FL by June so we really don't want to spend a month in SXM waiting for parts we might need in a rebuild...

      For sure I would get back to FL and then tackle it. Is it really hard to get those engines out of the boat? If you and Sierra can get it to the shop yourselves, I can't see a rebuild being that much. And diesels like that are made to be rebuilt. A new one is not going to have a significantly longer life than a rebuilt. (life meaning hours until it needs a rebuild)

      Also Ace of Spades down there suggested the head gasket, which makes a lot of sense, not that hard to look at, and easy to fix yourself.

    Bring it back to Stuart fl and ill help u rebuild it in my shop/garage. Ive rebuilt yanmars and lots of engines.

    I'll fly down to Florida if you haven't fixed it yet. Overhaul the engine or both, pay me with a Tula hat and a hull to crash in. My guess is it's a valve, but new piston and rings isn't that much more work. Besides I am intrigued by Jetty and would love to meet her. DON'T BUY A USED ENGINE! You already have a used engine that just needs fixed

    The valves wouldn't do pressure in crankcase! Its probably the rings 90% chances!

    rebuild the motor easiest route . usually some one has a kit that includes almost everything. probably need to hone block possible oversize pistons for better seal,.etc. compression is essential for diesel power.

    Billy when I was a Yanmar dealer my distributor for Yanmar was in Jersey called “ Mack Boring “ they offered factory rebuilds with a good warranty. I’m assuming you have a 2 GM ? Most times Mack Boring had rebuilds in stock, they would need your engine as a core.
    The problem with a new engine is they don’t make a 2 GM any more. A new engine would be different in Hp.
    If you have someone rebuild this engine the problem is finding a good rebuilder ?
    As to the blow by ? There are a few areas within the engine that could cause this.
    Piston rings and or valve stem seals. One area to start would have a compression test.

    If the engines are freshwater cooled I would rebuild them both. They are simple engines and easy to work on. Do the tired one first. It probably has worn piston rings, but be thorough. Do the valves and guides in the head and replace all the bearings in the engine along with the rings. 31 years of service tells me they were good engines, so just fix 'em. If they are raw water cooled the internal water passages may be too corroded to bother with a rebuild. There should be remanufactured long blocks available, too. Good luck!

    Billy, just a thought ? Get the engine running, pull the oil cal off of the valve cover. Check to see if you are getting blow by at the cover? This would mean the valve seals are in tuff shape .
    My guess is the problem is internal, most likely the rings / pistons.
    If he mechanic is good he could pull the head on the engine, check for wear in each cylinder with a micrometer. This would tell you if the engine needs to be bored. You might luck out and not have to bore the engine, have the crank cut down, new bearings and rings, maybe a couple of pistons depending upon condition . Rebuild the head , seals , valve job etc. your done.
    Definitely check into the Mack Boring thing, that would be a way to minimize down time and keep expenses as low as possible.

    Seems like the rings are relaxed and it just has lost compression. Based on the sound of it running I would say it might be getting a little air which would cause the stalling if you get any air from the tank to the transfer pump it's possible to get air in the fuel check the lines from tank to transfer pump. Another quick way to try and make sure it gets good fuel or solid column of fuel is to put a small electric pump by the tank where the primer bulb is and take the primer bulb out to try and make sure it gets solid fuel to the transfer pump. Also the lines can leak air if they are dry rotted not sure of the distance between the tank and the engine. But the hopefully the electric pump would help the stalling atleast you could still use the engine even with low compression just might not have the power you want. Also Sierra could squeeze the primer bulb when it's trying to die and see if the engine recovers that would show that you are losing the prime on the fuel. Sorry for the long comment.

      Without it smoking my money would be on a valve issues and possibly bad rings or scratched cylinder wall to let pressure build in the crankcase . Usally its one or the other.

    Billy... Tight valves can cause low compression, did you get them adjusted? Try a product called Seafoam in the fuel, maybe 2X the re come need amout. It may help free up a stuck ring or two and clean the injectors. I would rebuild the engine if it is not an easy fix, then you know what you have.

    buy the book and rebuild it. It is not really that hard but you do want to be in a place with a machine shop so you can have the valve body decked and cam checked. if need be. It is really not that expensive or hard to do. You should have the factory service manual anyway so buy it and study up. As a sailor rebuilding small diesel engines is a really good thing to know. Go to panama and do it there.

    Billy I think that after watching you Tackle Many Previous Task transmission in particular , you Could Rebuild these Engines. As a Retired Diesel Engine Builder as I have Said Before Your Probably Looking at a Compression Problem in The Cylinders I would Suggest a Good Visual Inspection after Pulling the Head and go from there. Diesel engines are built pretty Stout and you have great advantage with only a few cylinders to deal with cost wise. Imagine cost of a Massive diesel engine overhaul. Again I have complete Faith in your ability to tackle this. Buy a Manual for your Engine , Study It and you'll be FIne. I am in Ft. Myers Florida and could come on a weekend to assist.     Billy. If the compression is down to the point where the engine can be turned over by had and there is only good compression on one of the cylinders it would explain the excessive crankcase pressure. Lack of power due to the low compression would also cause the engine to stall as it has no/little power to keep the flywheel rotating to the next good stroke. The lack of compression can be either excessive wear of the piston rings/bores or valve stem wear. With valve stem wear the inlet valve stem and oil seals on the inlet tend to wear at the same rate as the exhaust. On the induction stroke the inlet valves will allow oil to be sucked into the combustion chamber. On the exhaust stroke the wear allows hot gasses to escape into the crankcase via the valve stems and seals. So typically if your getting blue smoke in the exhaust and burning a bit of oil it is generally the valves and the oil seals that have excessive wear. However, on the compression stroke both inlet and exhaust valves are closed. Or should be.... It is then the piston rings and bores that are worn allowing air past the rings into the crankcase. This is usually accompanied by a black smoke from un-burnt diesel due to poor combustion in the chamber. Low power, Crankcase pressure and the ability to turn the engine over by hand point to worn rings and bores. Parts for these engines are readily available on the mainland and a rebuild of the top end will see you good for at least 5 years. You will need to do the valves and oil seals at the same time. But, at the end of the day its how long your going to keep the boat. If you replace the engines with new you are only likely to see a 30% return on your investment on the sale. Just like any new kit you fit to a boat. Hope this helps. Sail Safe. Ant, Cid & the Pooch crew.

    I have virtually the same engine Yanmar2GM20F (18 hp). Those engines are bullet-proof and very simple. You have lots of offers for help in Florida, Totally - rebuild it when you get home and it will be good for another 30 years. There is a youtube video of a guy who knew nothing about it, and rebuilt the whole thing. You can approach in incrementally with the help of others: rings, valves, piston, head gasket. I like that idea of the tablespoon of oil in the cylinder (determines rings/piston or valve). You don't need a new Beta, that introduces a whole other set of issues rebuild engine mounts, engine alignment, etc. (not to mention the $10k ?) each IF you install it yourself, otherwise much more.

    Hi Guys, I have finally caught up with all your videos and Boy have I had a blast doing it, I'm also a big fan of Beau & Brandy's on YT and think it's wonderful the way ye look out for each other. I found ye through Ruby Rose when ye shared accommodation at the boat show and took there recommendation to take a look at your videos. Glad I did.     Checking the valves is only going to put some of the blow-by into the exhaust manifold or into the intake manifold it shouldn't put it down into the crankcase

      Bill Richardson is correct. Valves problems will not pressurize the bottom end. 99% of the time it’s piston rings but it sounded like it has some rod and or crankshaft issues.

      @@johngarrett6424 I told them 6 or 7 months ago that it sounded like the motor was going to come apart and Billy said it has always sounded like that since they bought the boat. I think it is a 3 cylinder and that is why it is so rough.

    The best way to diagnose is to do a compresson test with and without a bit of oil on the piston. If its the rings, the compression will be much higher due to the temporary seal from the oil between cilinder, rings and piston. Allso do a cilinder leak test by removing the injector and put the piston in top position both valves closet. Apply some airpressure on the injector hole and you can hear where the air goes. intake, exhaust or dipstick hole.

    A rebuild in Florida on those engines is likely around 2k. New pistons, rings, and heads bored/milled. It might be a head gasket pushing air from one cylinder to another. Could be rings or valves...do the oil trick to see if things change...You can also fit an air compressor to the injector port and see if you are getting cylinder to cylinder leakage by turning the engine by hand and seeing if air comes out the next injector port in all positions(valves will be open at many points but closed in at least one position...small chance of leaky valves but it is a good test. If you do it is a head gasket maybe.

    had a similar situation with a detroit diesel (671) where the dipstick and oil kept being pushed out of the tube. We added a second breather to the system to help relieve the crankcase pressure. Pressure was due to blow-by caused by worn rings and while we did have to rebuild the motors in the boat this fix delayed that for a year or two.

    Get both engines rebuilt. They will be like new and get you a better price on the sale of your boat later. It's the best option all around.

    Everyone has an opinion of what to do. I like John's answer! Rebuild it, you will learn a lot about motors and enjoy the experience, knowing that you have become a master mechanic after doing a rebuild. "Don't buy someone else's problems by investing in another old motor. Due to all the boats that have been underwater from damage you might end up with a "Pickled replacement engine".

    Discouraging to have this problem, but 31 years that speak volumes for Yanmar. If the blocks are good, rebuild both.

    rebuild it it seems daunting but its not and when your done you will have a brand new engines. if you do the labor yourself the cost will be very low compared to a new engine get your tools from harbor freight probably best to do this in florida pull the block strip it down send the block to get line honed the crankshaft balanced and turned you may need to sleeve the block but its not that bad. you should look for a rebuild kit with pistons rings and bearings and all gaskets for a reference on cost. call a machine shop to find out the cost of line hone and they will measure the block and check it for cracks . you have an over glorified lawn mower motor they can rebuild the head also plaine the head and the block .. the good news is there is only three pistons you should be able to do both engines in a couple weeks if you buckle down and get it done then no more worries like getting a used one. fresh motor will fetch a much higher price for resale later good luck

    You're getting blow by like that to push that oil stick up most likely it's coming from the rings of the Piston you're getting a little bit of blow into the crankcase. All you can do is try and make sure all your venser opened up and you can vent that are out of the motor so it doesn't pressure up. The Next Step to do a compression test on the cylinders and now you're getting in pretty deep just keep the vents open and run

    I hate mechanical problems especially when you're not at your FOB.
    I did really enjoy the video underwater so I saw a lot of things that I'm familiar with.
    Saw that beautiful wrasse, and think I saw an octopus.
    For me this is like a 19 minute vacation I really appreciate the video.
    I never wish any mechanical issues on people however it makes for an interesting video.
    I know a fair amount about Diesel's however I've never worked on a yanmar.
    Sounds like rings to me but I may be wrong.

      Consider the source. If Billy and Sierra had decided to get new engines, then there would be a perfectly good used one for sale at that guy's shop. As opposed to you or I just looking around for one, which would be a shot in the dark. So yeah, a used engine would be perfect. The finding of a good one is the issue.

    I’ve been thinking, repeating over heating of the engine, bad impeller etc, over the life of the engine can erode the head gasket. I’d pull it off first to have a look before buying a new one. 😎 hope you had a fantastic Christmas and have a Happy New Year.

    Thats a tiny little engine, nothing like a big 4cyl 400kg donk. Can you get by with one engine in the immediate short term? If so, get that engine out and remove pistons to see what gives. If you are very very lucky, you might only need new rings in it. There is lots of material on youtube about doing rings and pistons. You should also do a valve grind, easy to do with simple and cheap tools. Don't be afraid of it.

    Nothing to do with the lift pump. That only supplies the injection pump! Blow by is caused by broken piston ring or head gasket. There are no vac lines on this engine, just a single hose to a breather. A cracked piston or block is unlikely. Very simple to replace piston rings. We sailed our 40' cat around the world with a single 3GM30F + a small outboard on the other hull for marina dockings.

    It sounded like it was knocking to me, if it is you are likely to spin a rod or main bearing if you keep running it. If that happens the block is toast.

    This had to be the most difficult video you have ever made.
    But hands down, this was by a country mile the best video ever on this channel. You analyzed the problem intelligently. You tried to solve the problem starting with the most economical option and working your way up. It was real.
    So while this is going to be a difficult moment for you, it’s also the moment you made something very memorable on RUclips. So maybe this whole ordeal ends up being a good thing in the long run.

    Add turbos if your building it.... 30hp is better then 13😎 anyways at the first mention of blow by I decided a compression tester is a must have to self diag also find a mechanic willing to do a cylinder leak down test so you know what your up against for sure before pulling the head .... pretty simple add compressed air to each cylinder at TDC compression stroke and see where the air comes out. Intake exhaust or crank case

    Rebuild it, its not that hard. Limp the boat back to Florida, pull the motor(that will be the hard part). Find out what motor that is, and what else it's used in. You may be able to cross reference it to an industrial engine. A rebuild kit for most yanmar 3-4 cylinder is about $1000. If you send your head out to the machine shop that will be close to $400. After that you basically have a good running engine you don't have to worry about. Keep documentation/receipts for when you decide to sell.

    You could try putting a couple of squirts of transmission fluid down the cylinder to bring up the compression. Can't hurt

    The fact that it crapped out pretty quickly makes me doubt normal ware. I wonder about a blown head gasket, since the fellow said only 1 cylinder had good compression. It could be cylinder to cylinder leakage. Is there any evidence of coolant in the oil, or oil in the coolant? If the oil seems burnt compared to the other engine, blow-by could be to blame.

    Billy if you had fuel in the oil it would be pretty thin. You would notice a difference in the viscosity of the oil

    Can you rig a small outboard on that sponson. Make it down to FL. Then replace with a reman long block

    Put a 1/2 ounce of oil into the cylinder with no compression. If the compression increases then you have bad rings. If the compression doesn't increase then you have bag valves. (assuming a 4 cycle diesel engine)

      Ours had same thing, low compression on one. No bad rings, no bad valves.....hole rusted through the cylinder wall.

    Well we know it has blow by so yes that's loss of compression. But diesels run off heat of compression, so the hardest time for that engine to run is when its first started cold! Since it's starting up it might not be too bad.(ok,we know it's worn out)AllI can say is continue to look for air leaks and as a band aid pull that engine apart and throw a set of rings in! With all the boats that sank in st Martin you might find a descent used diesel there, good luck!

    Sorry about the engine problems.Compression check will tell you a lot about the status of the cylinders.Rings are probably worn out if these engines have never been rebuilt.Diesel engines are supposed to have a high compression.No compression no run right.Rebuild is the best option unfortunately not so easy in Grenada maybe.On the high side of things.     Whats the running hours on the engine? If it starts without starting fluid then it has good enough compression in one of the cyl. No compression = no start in a compression ignition engine. The last engine out of my boat was a 15k hour Mitsubishi. It didn't wear out, corrosion took its toll. The ocean is a bitch. Beta is a good choice, I have 2 kubota diesels in land equipment and they are great.

    Hi, we enjoy your videos. I have a bunch of videos up showing the rebuild of our diesel in the cockpit on our Gemini catamaran. Rings are not that hard to do. My videos are for a Westerbeke, so not exactly the same but similar in principle.. If it's the rings then the costs are pretty minimal. Mostly gaskets, etc. the big cost is the labor and time... You have the time... If you do it yourself, it's really not that bad. You have the skills. Maybe not all the tools yet, but you can do this. And tools are cheaper than a new engine. Maybe you can find someone who can help you out to get past the tricky parts. My take is wait until you are stateside and have help and are near parts and places where you can get tools. If you are going to end up with a new engine, or used, then give this a try first yourself. Also, a simple bracket on your stern can get you a place for your dingy outboard as a second engine or as a backup should you need that. Our problem was carbon build up and stuck rings. Blow by was dip stick pops up. And if you open the oil fill on top, it would chug smoke out... Normally the oil fill open on top of the valve is not chugging smoke....So check out waltsailing2009 on youtube.. Go to videos tab at the top of my page and they will show up.

    Billy ain't going to hurt it much if the motor runs you can just run it just don't have a lot of power but at least suspend your propeller forward or backwards to help maneuverability run it long as you can

    rebuild every time if the bore is clean then new pistons and rings as for the fuel pump should be able to get and fit a diaphram to that old pump as a spare

    Those engines are very easy to rebuild. Most of the time things are just worn out over time. Send the head off to be done lapping valves by hand is an exercise in mind numbing boredom. By time you buy all the tools necessary to do it right you have paid for it to be done. After 30 years both need to be done.

    I realize you will need rebuild or replacement, but have you tried oil supplements to limp home? I did not see posts to try this, but I did not read them all. LUCAS ENGINE OIL STOP LEAK, BLUE DEVIL OIL STOP LEAK, and BARS LEAK STOP LEAK CONCENTRATE are three of the ones that are compatible with Diesel engines. Not knowing how bad it really is, you may want to research one of these, usually available at auto parts stores. Just an idea for a temporary bandaid

    Billy are you sure the Yanmar is a 2 GM and not a 2 QM ? The GM was rated at 18 Hp ? QM was around 12-13 Hp.
    I have been thinking about your problem ? With the engine running and the oil fill cap out of the valve cover does the oil dip stick still want to raise out of the tube / pan assembly ?

    Great video, sorry about the engine. My vote would be rebuild it. A new engine would cost way too much and a good rebuilt engine should run just as good or better than a new one. With a new engine there is always a question of fitting or working with existing transmissions or cooling systems or exhaust. With a rebuilt engine it;s the same engine so it bolts directly back into the place it came out of.

    IF YOU ARE IN A SITUATION WHERE YOU NEED A THIRD HAND TO HOLD A GASKET THEN JUST GREASE ONE SIDE OF IT AND STICK IT TO ONE OF THE PARTS AND IT WILL STAY UNTIL YOU GET THE PART TOGETHER AND THE BOLTS INSTALLED.

    Hi i just went through a problem fuel in oil, the push rods on one of the cylinders broke .drove me nuts, pull the valve cover give it a check.

    My advice guys like many others, is limp it back to florida and rebuild both engines, renuilt engines will last at least as long as new and it is an easy job out of the boat. Not to mention the learning gained by doing it

    That sounds just like my 155ya yanmmar tractor...run it ...the top end have any sludge...well a ring jobs a easy thing...2 cycinder..no water gettin in no cross over between pistions...rings for sure

    You have mentioned it before.... I think it is the fated time. Convert to electric. Used 5.5kw tesla batteries ($1300).
    Approx. cost per hull- $7000. All-in.
    I guarantee you have talked to Beau and Brandy already.....
    New Yanmars will be similar. All-in.

    as Tod abrahamisson said about Mack boring I went to school there too many year ago and fully certified yanmar diesel mechanic and what he said about Mack boring is true but there is one closer it's in S.C mack boring are yanmar importers for yanmar engine to the usa there you best chance to get a good rebuilded block. or rebuild it yourself you can do it billy Marry Christmas and happy new year

    I would do whats called and in frame overhaul in this case in sugar scoop . replace only failed parts. you could do it yourself Billy. Re ring it Fix any piston issues, new gaskets and call it a day. i wouldn't run it anymore than necessary if you're going to repair it because you could make it worse. price an overhaul kit. going used is a gamble because you won't know the maintenance or history of it. you could end up with a boat anchor no pun intended

    You might could get a gasket kit and take it apart. You might luck out with a blown head gasket and if not you would know exactly what you were dealing with.
