I grew up on River Road and have cycled down the bike lanes there more times that I can count. While I love seeing protections for cyclists, this seems to be very pedestrian oriented, at the expense of vehicle flow and damage to vehicles caused by the new curbs that have been added directly on the edge of the lane of traffic. These new aprons are only going to cause more people pulling from the side streets, to pull all the way out into the fast lane, which I can only imagine will cause additional accidents. I was hoping while seeing the construction progress that they had some wild new design that would make more sense once it was completed, but driving that direction today, it’s looks just as terrible today as it did when they first started pouring curbs in the lane of traffic.
New protections are great but this is a terrible design and massive waste of taxpayer money. Most cars and trucks can not make this turn without mounting the skirt. Traditional driving rules have always been to turn into the corresponding lane (inside lane to inside lane and outside lane to outside lane). This will be a massive mess until there are dedicated turn lights for the left hand turn lanes (Husaker and Irving) since most vehicles will have to mount the skirts or pull into the middle lanes. As it stands now all left hand turn lane traffic from Beltline that travel down Hunsaker will be merging into the same lane as most right hand turn lane traffic from Irving. This intersection design will cause more accidents.

Guarantee, people are just gonna drive over those aprons, or whatever those little colorful low curbs are. Waste of city money.
