The greatness of Monk is in the immense tension he creates in the middle of every composition. He plays like an climber hanging from the cliff. And the risk he takes to create such tension is one of the main characteristics of jazz improvisation.

I smile at every "bum" note that Thelonius hits, exactly as he knew I would. His humour too is his genius.

If you play a wrong note once, it's a mistake, if you play a wrong note twice, it's jazz :)

This is a Duke Ellington tune...Juan Tizol was the co-writer. And yes, this was featured on the Thelonious Monk plays Duke Ellington album...one of the great jazz records imho.

This version made me realize that the original bass line in the A section is actually Db on the first beat and C on the second (in 2/2 time signature). I never heard it that way and thought that was Monk's idea.

Monk's music makes me think of giraffe-legged éléphants reaching up to heaven and melting clock dials in a desert. He is most definitely the Salvador Dali of jazz.

Juan Tizol's composition not Ellington. He also wrote 'Perdido'
'Zanzibar' and many others like, "Moonlight Fiesta", "Jubilesta",
"Conga Brava" for the Ellington orchestra. He was from Puerto Rico, also
played with Harry James on the west coast and came back to Ellington.
He was so important in the orchestra that Ellington trusted him, since
he knew how to write music, with all the transciptions in sheets of the
musical arrangements for all the instruments and brass sections of the
band. Juan Tizol - composer of Carvan.

According to Mary Lou Williams(and others who heard him in the early 40's)Monk actually played with a lot more "conventional" technique, but wanted to create something new,so he developed his original style, Of course, you can still hear shades of James P Johnson,Ellington, and even Tatum on a few rare occasions on this and other recordings throughout Monk's amazing career.
