    I’ve had a holiday in this wonderful town at least once every decade - in the early 70s as a toddler, in the 80s as a teenager and twice in the 90s with my fiancée. I love the place and it draws me like a magnet - I’ll be 50 next year and I cannot think of a way I’d rather mark my half-century than returning to my spiritual home. Can’t wait to see how much or how little it’s changed ...

      I hope you spotted yourselves. Recently I watched a documentary on local industry and there was a short section in which my Mother appeared. The documentary was made in 1964 and she died in 1993. I never knew the film existed and the emotions I felt when I realised it was her can't be put into words. I hope that you're so lucky.

      Dav Max watched it all and not on this one unfortunately , the sad thing is I wasn’t lucky enough to have a video camera and in hindsight you regret not taking as many stills as you probably could have done , still probably the best picture is when you remember , stay safe and look after those close to you

    Being born in St Ives and spending over 45 years here now I was chuffed to bits watching this little gem of times gone by. A great little piece of history of a little seaside town, I'm proud to say I love to bits. Thank you very much sharing your video :)

    Lovely video that, they knew how to use the video camera, they were expensive back then, so it's great to see it used properly, no motion sickness and swingling the camera around wildly haha seems like only yesterday I was 26 then 1990 34 years ago blimey. The great thing about St Ives is it doesn't change ❤

    I lived and worked there in 1990. We lived above the shop in the middle of the main Street, (I won't say which one!) and from about April through to November ish we worked from 10am to 10pm 7 days a week. We had 4 months off, when the shop was closed, but I really, really loved it. (,Oh and sometimes we'd get an hour off for tea, and maybe and hour off at lunch times but that was it!!!) No days off. That was our choice as my partner owned the shop. Brilliant, happy times! I live in St.Just now but it was lovely looking at the fashion! And the shops that were there then. It hasn't changed much. Nicely filmed. Thank you!

    I can barely believe that I was there not only in 1990 but was in a pram in 1950 with my Dad showing me the automaton on the harbour wall near the current life boat station which fascinated me. In 1960 it was very crowded but still much as pre war and then 1963 the hippies started arriving...yes that early! By 1966 they were well established at the far end of Portmeor and 1967 worried us. However St Ives was it’s wonderful self and I have visited hundreds of times since. In fact I should be there today but the latest “lockdown” killed that. My best memories though are of 1966...sparkling weather in the last week of June/early July...many memories and I still see it like that to this day. I wish those I knew then were with me now...I have pictures...I will go back very soon.

    • @AlisonBryen
      @AlisonBryen 3 года назад +1

      We still visit every year. My mom used to spend her summers down here with her great aunt and uncle who lived in Carbis Bay. That would have been in the 60s. She talks about the hippies moving into the area too. A lot used camp in the woods surrounding the town apparently.
      I first visited in the 1980s as a kid. I visit each and every June with my husband, my parents and my sister and her husband. We hire a beautiful house near to the Cornish Arms pub and have the most wonderful and memorable holidays.

      @HQBProductions 3 года назад

      @@AlisonBryen I hope that you get there again sometime this year...we normally go there 4/5 times a year and last time was last March in the days before the first “Lockdown”...in fact the Hotel closed the day we left on March 23rd. Normally we would be there in March but that looks unlikely...maybe a day trip might happen if allowed..400 miles there and back but worth it, enjoy whatever you can, these are difficult times...I watch the webcams every day and hope to be back on Porthleven Harbour wall again one day this year. Stay safe and keep looking forward...🙂🙂🙂🙂

My memories of this time only seem like yesterday, but looking back at this video everything does seem strangely dated...the cars, the prams, the fashions and the old people somehow look older than today's old people, if that makes sense.

    Lots of changes since then ,original.features ripped out ,pannelled doors ,windows replaced cv by pvc and botch ,massively over developed by wealthy Londoners and second home owners who care little about the character of this little town .Pvc botch and Contemporary are the order of the day now .

      That's a shame. 😔
      The original character and local material needs to be reclaimed and reinstated in the town to bring back its soul.
      Very, very important to keep the history and significance of the town alive.
      Was there about two years ago and noticed it wasn't what I imagined the area should be like.
      Would like to see everything back to its rich and original configuration.
